That article warms my heart. What about the Bulls? Well, there are plenty of indications that every bad practice detailed about Reinsdorf's ownership of the White Sox is also in place with the Bulls.

The only difference is that Reinsdorf cares less about results with the Bulls. People sometimes mistake this as a good thing... "at least Reinsdorf doesn't care enough about the Bulls to meddle". But it's a bad thing. Reinsdorf meddles, but the desire to win in baseball tempers his desire to meddle. Since he cares less about basketball though, his desire to meddle isn't offset by a burning desire to win.

That is, every bad thing in that article applies to the Bulls even more.

I think you're right, and Matt is right about the business being "turnkey" and so lucrative in spite of what its owners do that even his son Fredo can run it. I also think he views this like he views his real estate investments: buy it with a loan and then sit on it and the laws of finance will increase the value over time while you do nothing but the barest minimum. And about every 10 years you avoid municipal fines and cover up the peeling paint with new paint, giving your tenants the hope that you might someday scrape away the black mold in their kitchens.

I called my sponsor last night but then I told him to fuck off and shot this article straight into my bloodstream. How glorious to see this mediocre family pilloried while on the verge of setting a record for futility in a league that stretches back more than 100 years.

The Bulls are not a success! They underperform like mad, and not just on the court. Sloth is their sin, not greed. It's maddening. Granville's lazy landlord is apt. Apt!

He had a completely unforseeable setback in his recovery from a not at all serious injury that gave the Bulls no concern at all when signing him to that 5 year above market value contract.

While this obviously isn't good news, it's also not surprising. A quick Google search on bone edema says recovery can take anywhere from 3 to 12 months depending on the severity, and it can sometimes have lasting effects for up to two years.

I think this shows how poor the Bulls beat is at their jobs. I don't remember anyone really diving into this when Pat got his surgery. The official Bulls statement simply said he'd be out the remainder of the season and I think everyone just took that to mean he'd be back for the start of next (this) season.

It has been just over seven months since his surgery, so he's technically still in that 3-12 month timeframe. But in typical Bulls fashion, instead of getting out ahead of it and being honest with the fans, they just put out the least possible information and now everyone is freaking out that Pat isn't healed as we're ramping up for the new season.

What sucks is that it sounds like the bone just has to heal itself. If it's not healed, I think it's just a waiting game and there's not much he can do in the form of rehab to expedite that process.

Was speaking to a friend about the reinsdorfs and I made a point similar to yfbb. Jerry cared enough about the bulls to be a cash cow for the Sox. So in some weird indirect way, Jerry needed the bulls to be successful (profitable) so that the profit can fund the Sox.

Junior has no love for the Sox, so he has less need for the bulls to churn max profit. He doesn't need the team to be a cash cow, just needs the team to be a form of passive income and then one day he or likely his kids can sell it when the passive income is no longer greater than selling price.

Right now, as bad as the bulls are, were still a loyal fan base. It doesn't take much to get us in the seats, so the reinsdorfs have no reason to sell because the passive income from the bulls exceeds any possible sale.

So I expect things to get worse with junior not better.

This. Inherited organizations consistently spend less money around the margins to get better. They provide shitty benefits, hire less people, etc. Do less with less!
