It was trending in this direction earlier Wednesday, and then Woj dropped the bomb just before midnight: The Bulls are finalizing a deal with Nuggets GM Arturas Karnisovas to become their next executive vice president of basketball operations.
This is the first time since 2003 somebody not named John Paxson will be running basketball operations in Chicago. While Paxson is expected to remain with the organization in an advisory role, with Gar Forman possibly sticking around as well, this is at least a step in the right direction as the Bulls overhaul their front office. It’s not exactly #FireGarPax and a full housecleaning would still be more ideal, but I’ll take what we can get.
Karnisovas has an impressive resume and is highly regarded around the league. Karnisovas helped build the Nuggets into a Western Conference contender in recent years alongside Tim Connelly, and he also worked for Daryl Morey in Houston.
Karnisovas is expected to hire a new general manager and make a number of other moves to bolster the basketball operations and scouting departments. The expectation is he’ll also fire Jim Boylen and bring in his own coach. Then it’s time to get to work on the roster, which still has some promising pieces but clearly needs work.
