Lauri Markkanen out 4-6 weeks with pelvis injury

Bulls injury update coming out of nowhere today:

Lauri Markkanen underwent an MRI of his right hip which revealed an early stress reaction of his right pelvis. Following a period of rest, Markkanen will resume basketball related activities with a full return anticipated in 4-6 weeks.

Lauri has had a banged up season (and career), first with a barely-acknowledged oblique strain, then an ankle sprain, and now this. He has played in every game this season.

Obvious initial questions include how long this particular injury has been going on, how it may have affected his mostly ineffectual play all season, and if Lauri is simply injury-prone.

Immediately on the court it should have some impact, especially with a couple other frontcourt players out. Thaddeus Young will undoubtedly start at power forward and get heavy minutes (trade showcase?), and that may actually benefit the short-term prospects of the team given how poor Lauri was shooting and what a bad defender he is. But then when you slide up the backup as Chandler Hutchison, and needing Cristiano Felicio more at backup center, that’s where it’ll really hurt on the court. The Bulls potentially could add someone to the roster if they apply for a hardship exception.

(fortunately, Jim Boylen only worries about winning the first quarter, so he has a chance at succeeding)

Long term for ‘da rebuild’, this is bad. Not only does it mean Lauri won’t develop or progress, but now we have a variable thrown in. For a lot of teams it would mean further evidence that Lauri just isn’t that great of a ‘core piece’, but for GarPax it’ll mean this is another season where they simply don’t know and that’s not an excuse but it is reality.
