Kirk Hinrich Update

Almost casually, Del Negro let slip that guard Kirk Hinrich could be back in "two to three weeks." That would be far ahead of the Bulls' original prognosis for Hinrich to return in mid-February, though Hinrich privately has been optimistic about returning sooner.

Derrick Rose Will Not Be In The Slam Dunk Contest

Magic center Dwight Howard, Grizzlies forward Rudy Gay, and Knicks guard Nate Robinson will compete in the slam-dunk competition Feb. 14 during the NBA All-Star weekend festivities in Phoenix.

Howard is the defending champion, beating Gerald Green last year in New Orleans in a competition that featured Howard wearing a Superman cape. Gay also was a participant in last year's contest, and Robinson was the 2006 champion.

Fans will pick the fourth competitor in an online vote, and will select one of three rookies: Bucks forward Joe Alexander, Trail Blazers forward Rudy Fernandez or Thunder guard Russell Westbrook.

The last time a player successfully defended his slam-dunk title was in 2003, when Jason Richardson of the Golden State Warriors repeated as champion.

Derrick Rose is a couple of inches shorter than Heat star Dwyane Wade, but with both possessing explosiveness and a willingness to get to the rim the comparisons between the two are natural.

But according the Daily Herald, Wade not only sees a lot of himself in the Bulls' rookie, but he believes that Rose is more athletic than himself.

"Derrick Rose, he's taken the league by storm with his athletic ability," Wade said. "I mean, he's one of the best penetrators, finishers, that the league has already. A game that's on ESPN, because of him and (Michael) Beasley, first and second pick - I'm sure he wants to live up to the hype. It's going to be a great challenge."

"I think he's a little more athletic than me," Wade said. "He's kind of like me when I came into the league. He's an attacker. He's a strong penetrator. He throws his body in there. He's a great finisher, as well. I think he's a little more athletic than I was in my rookie year, just how quick he gets off his feet and how high he jumps."

My Bulls Christmas Wish List

12 HOPEFUL WISHES THAT MY TRUE LOVE GIVES TO ME

1) The Obvious. A trade bringing the Bulls a solid big man like Miller without giving up on some promising talent.

2) Derrick Rose to gain an All Star berth and win ROY honors in one of the deepest rookie classes in years.  To some, an All Star appearance may seem meaningless but call me dumb.  I think a first year pg to get into the All Star game automatically makes him the star that gets benefits, like frequent foul calls.

3) For all trade proposals on Blogabull.com to have their own thread.  Might as well call them "Tradeposts"

4) Luol Deng to turn into Luol Deng again.  The system has to work for a slashing forward, doesn't it?

5) Larry Hughes to hurt that damn shoulder again.  But this time, not heal as fast.

6) To see Thomas and Noah start side by side for a minimum of 20 games straight.  And not get Aaron Gray starting minutes.  Just to see what you might have in a season that really is going nowhere.

7) For a Blazers fan to never post on Blogabull.com again during game threads.  Seriously, that was just really pathetic.

8) For the Bulls to somehow figure out a way to keep Ben Gordon without killing any hopes of a possible 2010 surprise.

9) A new coach.  One that realizes that the future of our team depends on guys that were recently drafted and not the hefty paid ones.

10) A playoff berth.  Yes, please no more lottery picks.  Get Rose a taste of the action

11) Aaron Gray to somehow mysteriously vanish into thin air.  Not in the rotation.  Literally.  I wanna see him on a milk carton or something.

12) And last . . .

For the Bulls to stop pretending they're a small market team.  Use some of that insane amount of money they're making on the team and stop using the luxury tax as an excuse.

Brad Miller Rumors

NEW ORLEANS - The trade chatter surrounding Brad Miller continues, as well it should.

He's atop the list of most likely Kings next to go, and league sources continue to indicate that the Kings are officially engaged and somewhat motivated on the trade front.

The latest Miller report to pop up comes from ESPN's Marc Stein, who says Charlotte is offering former King Gerald Wallace in return for Miller. While Wallace is available for the right player in return, I'm told from a source close to the Bobcats that Miller does not fit that bill if it's up to Larry Brown.

The Bobcats' coach always has had major influence on personnel from his coaching seat, and he took that job in part because he knew he would have the ear of Charlotte exec Michael Jordan. But the question is whether Jordan's virtual status of "absentee GM," as he was referred to in this Chicago Sun-Times piece, means Brown's voice isn't being heard quite as much by the actual general manager, Rod Higgins. If it's up to Brown, though, he wants a more traditional big who can bang and do damage in the post. On the other side, the Kings aren't looking to take on the $38 million remaining over the next four seasons on Wallace's contract when wing players are far from a problem on their roster.

I'd be more inclined to keep an eye on the Chicago situation in which Miller could go there and the Kings likely would have their eyes on Drew Gooden, Joakim Noah, and perhaps Tyrus Thomas. The Bulls would have to send a few players the Kings' way, as Gooden's expiring deal is worth $7.1 million and Miller is making just shy of $11.4 million this season and $12.2 million in the final year of his deal next season.

A few tidbits to remember ...

* Gooden has been on the Kings' radar since he was hanging with the Maloofs two summers ago. He was the player offered in the Mike Bibby talks with Cleveland, a clear sign that Kings basketball president Geoff Petrie and vice president Wayne Cooper saw him as a decent fit in Sacramento. Gooden wasn't the hangup in those talks.

* Petrie badly wanted Joakim Noah in the 2007 draft, and the second-year player's struggles likely have done nothing to deter the exec who isn't quick to change his opinion of players just because things don't look so good from the outside looking in. Noah would give the Kings another young big to develop and hope he helps with their futile frontcourt.

* While Miller isn't as motivated this season as he was last, he still is a Petrie guy. And when you're a Petrie guy, that means he will try to make a move that is mutually beneficial for his team and the player. Chicago qualifies. While Miller has said he would prefer to retire in his home state of Indiana with the Pacers, he spent two seasons with the Bulls and Chi-town is only a three-hour drive from his home in Kendallville, Ind.

* Lest you forget, the Kings added a player to their front-office team last week, when former Kevin Martin agent and attorney Jason Levien officially began as assistant general manager/team counsel. As a quick side note, I'm told he was given the former office of fired coach Reggie Theus.

It would seem safe to say that the potential for communication between the two clubs has never been better, since just last summer Levien was successfully negotiating Luol Deng's six-year, $71 million deal with the Bulls in which he dealt directly with Chicago owner Jerry Reinsdorf. - Sam Amick

Drew Gooden Update

The Bulls are estimating Gooden could miss seven to 10 days with the sprained right ankle he suffered Friday night in Boston. Given that it's the same ankle that cost Gooden two games earlier this season, expect a conservative approach.

Mayweather to evaluate fight possibilities

Six months after announcing his retirement from boxing and walking away from his perch as pound-for-pound king and welterweight world champion, Floyd Mayweather Jr. has given the first indication that he is considering a comeback.

"Floyd has given Team Mayweather the green light to go out there and evaluate the biggest fights for him, to come back to him and present it to him. Then he will consider it," Leonard Ellerbe, Mayweather's best friend and adviser, told ESPN.com on Saturday

"If what we present him is something he's interested in doing, he will do it."

Tyrus Thomas Update

The Bulls are expected to release something official on Tyrus Thomas' condition later Thursday, but a person who has spoken with Thomas Thursday said he's resting comfortably and is eyeing a return for Saturday's home game against Utah after leaving Wednesday's overtime victory with a concussion.

Thomas got hit in the head in consecutive games---last Satuday at home against the Nets and Tuesday in Charlotte---then complained about dizziness and blackouts during Wednesday's game. He played just five minutes.

Vinny Del Negro said late Wednesday a CT scan came up negative and that more tests could be performed.

Chicago Bulls (11-12)

After seeing their playing time cut in recent games, Tyrus Thomas (16 points) and Joakim Noah (seven points, eight boards) combined to spark the Bulls past the Nets on Saturday. Maybe it's time for Vinny Del Negro to just go with those kids in the frontcourt and let them learn on the job.
