Open Game Thread #74: Bulls vs Boston Celtics

I remember when I was choosing between the 11-game season ticket plan options, and seeing this game against Boston on the schedule was a major factor in picking the option it was under.

I thought Boston would be obviously far better than the previous season (as people were too busy worrying about whether Kevin Garnett was a 'winner' or not to see how good he really was) but there were some things to be worried about. Namely injuries and poor play from the supporting cast. Not exactly brilliant observations at the time, and they've proven to be even more worthless now.

I also said the Bulls would have the best record in the conference to end the season...

Point is, now that the game is finally upon us, my enthusiasm in the Bulls is startlingly far below what I expected them to be at this point. So much so that the tickets for the game I was possibly most excited over (needling Celtics fans was one of my favorite things to do on the internet) have now been sold off.

The Celtics have done a fairly good job promptly putting away inferior opponents, which is what they'll try and do tonight. While they're pretty comfortably in the first seed, it's a team that goes all-out nearly every night. A reason why I thought the 8th seed wasn't even a hope worth pursuing. Guess we don't have to worry about that!

Drew Gooden (and Aaron Gray, who knew?) are likely out for tonight's game. The Celtics like to play small their own damned selves, so I wouldn't be surprised if we still see Tyrus, while starting, getting limited minutes. When they go small it's still with Kevin Garnett, when the Bulls do the same it's with the Noc.

Something to watch for? eh, I'm stumped. Doesn't mean I'm not open to the possibility of finding something though, provide your reasons below. Sarcastic entries encouraged.

going to be pretty.

I'm in total stat watching mode by now,
and even that probably won't be pretty!

It makes me really sad to realize that my hopes for the Bulls have been reduced to not being utterly humiliated.

It takes a special coach to make Aaron Gray a guy you can see.

at least my bf isn't a fan
since he's from here (i live in boston).

i hate their announcers.. the one dude's voice is so grating it's like painful to listen to.

i swear boston is the only city where they don't try to find someone with a generic accent doing the play by play.  it seems even the southerners find people that are comprehendible.

instead you just got this asshole going on about his tommy points.

anyone else
find it strangely coincidental that Simmons and Brown got called back up in time for tonight's game?  Tank mode starts tonight.  I say Boylan goes 10-11 deep this game.

by NormVanBeer on Apr 1, 2008 7:09 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

lol
they just suggested on pre-game that since Marquette's coach was hired by Indiana, that Boylan go back to Marquette.  Says Norm - "sounds pretty good"  lol

Sounds good to Bulls fans..... Not so good if you
are from Marquette or a player on Marquette with dreams of playing in the NBA.

by BiNgO on Apr 1, 2008 7:23 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

And yet the seniors on the team could
rest comfortably in their knowledge of guaranteed playing time, and lots of it.
It takes a special coach to make Aaron Gray a guy you can see.

Crean has few seniors
the best leave school early, so he ends up playing underclassmen.

He'll live to regret leaving Marquette where he was the undisputed king of campus.  Indiana isn't going to be kind to him.

I don't know why people are upset at Tyrus
for practicing left-handed. He clearly needs to get some moves using that hand, as seen on that Garnett block. :)

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Apr 1, 2008 7:51 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

There is no reason for anyone to be upset with
Tyrus.  He is going to make mistakes and will until he is allowed consistent minutes. The minutes are what is going to help him eliminate those mistakes.

by BiNgO on Apr 1, 2008 7:59 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Kirk showing why is really is only good enough to
come off the bench.  Too many bench players at guard on this team....  Still don't understand why Thabo is not getting the minutes he deserves as the Bulls best defensive guard.  He just needs more minutes to continue to develope his offensive game.

Does it look to anyone else
like Tyrus' team mates are making a conscious effort to get him the ball in places he can do something with it?

All the talk about Tyrus' team mates not likeing him--it doesn't look at all like that's how they're playing.

...maybe Tyrus is just their proxy to stick it to Boylan.

They are playing better than I expected
But then the fact that they are actually playing fairly well and still can't run with Boston kind of takes care of that false hope.  Well, for me at least, but apparently not for everyone if they're still announcing New Jersey scores as if that somehow changes the playoff race for the Bulls.

Tyrus had a foul at the
one second mark.

And none since.  Good job Tyrus.

Boylan's quotes about him in today's paper were mostly about TT getting in foul trouble.

The guy doesn't seem uncoachable at all to me.

by alec on Apr 1, 2008 9:08 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Say what you want about Duhon ...
... but he gets Tyrus the ball. I swear 80% of TT's alley-oop dunks are from Duhon. I know part of the reason is that they usually are on the court together, but at least he does look for him.

He's all but gone next season, but I think that's a  mistake. There aren't many serviceable backups that are true points in the league. I don't like BG at point, I'm not comfortable with Thabo trying to be a point forward, and Larry Hughes is just fucking terrible.

Unless we can somehow draft Derrick Rose, I believe we should keep the Hinrich/Duhon depth chart at the 1.

Tyrus plays better when he isn't looking over his shoulder and he is guaranteed to have a significant role.

Look at how he plays tonight with Gooden out.

Look at how he played against Denver right after the trade of Wallace.

He isn'r perfect, but he will be a good player in this league. I doubt it will be with the Bulls, sadly.

I'll give Boylan credit
for not bringing Hughes back. I hope KC Johnson didn't turn an ankle sprinting to Hughes for quotes.

That said, Thabo and Duhon played the same amount of minutes.

It's absolutely shocking that Thomas would produce when given minutes. Completely floored. You can't predict things like that.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Apr 1, 2008 10:17 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

he wasn't given minutes
as much as he didn't get in foul trouble.  And yes, he produced in those minutes.  He produced in the previous game in limited minutes, too.  If he stays out of foul trouble, he will stay on the floor, regardless of what Boylan may say in a given press conference.

Have you forgotten that
TT was in essence our #2 pick? You're ridiculous if you don't think he should be getting tons of run every night, foul trouble or not. You claim to watch the Bulls a lot and if that's true, you'd realize he's 10x as effective when he doesn't have to look over his shoulder every second he's on the floor. Tonight is just another countless example of that.

by Illini15 on Apr 1, 2008 10:45 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

How about
learning to play the game without getting into foul trouble is an extremely important of playing the game in the first place.  What good does it do if he is always gets into foul trouble when the games actually count.  If anything tonight showed that he's figuring that out.  If TT is the future, and I think he is, it's incumbent upon him to show that it is going to be a good future.

you tend to learn from experience
and nights like these when he gets a ton of minutes are how you gain experience. and what the hell does foul trouble even mean to him when he plays less than 15 or 20 minutes no matter what? come on. the foul trouble argument is pathetic.

when did I ever disagree with that?
My knee-jerk impulse isn't to scream that TT should play all game every game, but I think if you google it, I've said more than once that TT should be getting more burn and that Boylan was keeping him out for no good reason.

foul trouble isn't an acceptable excuse
to pull someone now?  Didn't I just make the argument that it was?  And despite what Boylan said about it not being garbage time yet, TT and Noah played 35+ minutes.  So if they stay out of foul trouble like most decent NBA players do, they will play no matter how badly KG is abusing them.

Yeah, stunning development with Tyrus
If only he had played well in extended minutes previously....  But it is nice to see that Boylan has finally succeeded in developing Ty, so add him to the Kirk, Thabo and Aaron Boylan success story list.

At least Duhon was playing reasonably well tonight.  Still couldn't disagree more with Boylan's stated reasons for playing him, but it's easier to bear when he's not sucking.  And while I'd rather have Thabo than Du, I'd also rather have Du than Larry (especially on a particularly bad shooting night).

It takes a special coach to make Aaron Gray a guy you can see.

by wjb1492 on Apr 1, 2008 10:25 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, but
Larry's around next year, Duhon won't be.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Apr 1, 2008 10:29 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

So I'll have plenty of time to suffer
while watching Larry next year.  I'm feeling a bit more fondly of Du now that his time is so short - not wanting to keep him, mind you, but I certainly don't resent him getting some PT to possibly increase his value on the market.

And I reserve the right to completely change my stance should the bizarre happen and the Bulls somehow decide to keep Du.

by Illini15 on Apr 1, 2008 10:46 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

How would you rank the guards?
As far as which ones you actually want to keep?

I would go something like:

Thabo
BG
Kirk
Du
Hughes

In a dream situation, this summer Pax would somehow unload both Kirk and Larry, re-sign BG, and draft a stud PG (Rose, Mayo, Westbrook). Then go into next year with the depth chart looking like...

PG: Lottery pick PG/Duhon
SG: Thabo/BG

It's a shame that Kirk will be tough to get rid of and it will be nearly impossible to dump Larry.

Thoughts?

by Illini15 on Apr 1, 2008 10:29 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

My thoughts probably dont count
but...I wouldnt take away kirk, or rather, i dont think he should be rid of before hughes or even bg for that matter, this is how i would rank my order of "guards to keep"

Thabo-
Theres just way too much upside with him, there are some things you can develop in teh game...things like height, defense, courtvision and reflexes, etc. Thabo has the size, and the desire to play defense, and his body shows signs that it can hold more muscle and get stronger. Then theres the things you could practice and still develop, the one that really comes to mind is shooting. Thabo can get a more accurate shot if he works at it. He has decent ball handlings skills, and he may never be one to create his own shot, but i can see him playing a B. Bowen like game.

Kirk-
I know half of bulls fans dont like him, but its usually because its a tear between him or gordon, i guess its always been a question if gordon and hinrich can coexist on a team just due to the nature of size. Hinrich i believe is a Great guard, though his biggest problem may be that he is smack dab in the middle of being a true Pg and a true sg.
He has the abilities to score from beyond the arc and inside it, yet lacks the killer instinct drive to do so especially under pressure. He has great basketball iq and court vision, but lacks the ball handling skills, reaction, and reflexes to rack up assists. I think the way people who dont like him see it is that he can never be a great shooting guard and he can never be a great point guard so he sucks, yet i see it in the light of, put a great pg next to him, and he will excel as a sg, put a great sg next to him, and he will excell as a pg.
His defense is also highly criticized (much like everything he does), in 2006 he probably shouldve made the defensive team, but because the bulls were still unknowns he didnt, he finally got it last year although he wasnt as great on defense last year as opposed to the year of 06, this year everyone sucked at everything, but more importantly hinrich didnt excell at defense. Besides all that, i still think if in any concept, hinrich is a top 10 in defensive guard categories.
uhh, but i regress, i am a hinrich fan so my opinions about him probably dont matter.

BG7-
No doubt he is our best scorer, he is an assasin from all areas of the court, leaving him open is the biggest mistake any team could ever make. He is short, but it doesnt matter, he is on teh bench but i like him as a starter (until thabo or kirk step up offensively).
He can start from the bench and still be hot, once hot its hard to cool off. He is serious on the court and has a desire to be better then he is today, and that makes me like him.
He is undersized though, and lacks defense, his ball handling skills are fancy at times, and attrocious  at others, he likes to look for his shot (as he should) and find others  later. He may not be able to answer in teh last five seconds of the game or a quarter, but if you give him the chance, he can create a lead high enough in three minutes that the last five seconds wont matter.
If he ever went to the suns or the spurs or any western conference team, he would be an all star without a doubt. However on this team, the way it is constructed he would be a liability, although he works well with hinrich, its just on defense the two of them wont be able to contain the kobes, carters, and jeffersons of the league. Thabo nor hughes are either good enough pgs, or have the right chemistry to work with bg7 right, and so he is probably having a hard time this season.

Du-
What???? Hey he is a solid backup, he shouldnt start, he shouldnt get more minutes then thabo kirk or bg, but he wants to play, he doesnt mind coming off the bench, and at times he can be servicable on all areas. he is a solid bench player, solid backup guard, solid person to blame things on when games go sour. Id take him over hughes.

Hughes-
He shoots alot, he can score of course, and has a strong build. He has decent court vision and passing ability, and is a good ball handler. thats all the good i have for him, cuz all he is theory.

The truth is he has no desire to work hard, the only time he really did was for a contract, and i imagine he will hard only in contract years. He doesnt slash, and so that promise he already broke, he looks for his shot too much and really wants to be a star, so better guards will never get a chance to be better (thabo, bg). He takes horrid shots (because he thinks he is kobe or lebron) he doesnt push himself all out on d (or else he would be a force) he looks for his shot more then bg does... he CAN bring alot to the table, but simply chooses not to, for this reason alone he should go away because he, more than any player on this team, chooses to be a team cancer, its not so much what the coaching staff makes him do, but what he simply does himself. Well at least hes better then wallace, i think...

Those are my thoughts at least on the guards, like i said because i am a hinrich fan nothing i say about him probably is going to be recieved as possible truths (except to other hinrich fans) and my whole argument becomes moot and biased, but i truly do try to rationalize and logically think things through...i try at least. so for the long rant.... SORRY

Kirk Hinrich. The FORMER Best White American Point Guard in the NBA, Will Soon be Traded :(

Hughes
pisses me off, because like you said, he just flat-out doesn't care. he has the physical tools and the basketball skills to be a very effective guard, but he takes too many boneheaded shots for no reason at all. and it's clear he really doesn't put in much effort on the defensive side either. such a shame.

Yea personality
Seems what he lacks, and im not talking about the media personality which he might have too much of. If he were mentally like ben gordon, i think he would be an allstar.

YEa
many times ive noticed your opinions have matched mine (although i do remember some arguments weve had or rather disagreed with), ive wondered if somehow, at least basketball wise, i am the male version of you, or at least in this blog...although i am not a fan of college basketball.

some disagreements
I agree with a lot but disagree with your assessment on Kirk and Duhon.  Kirk is just bad at making plays in the paint.  Guys like Thomas or Noah are ignored way too much in the paint when Kirk is running point.  Either Kirk doesn't see them even if they're pretty much wide open or Kirk has such a low opinion of their offensive game that he doesn't want to pass to them anyway.  Because of this, I can't agree with someone saying he has good court vision.  Duhon is the only point guard on the team...that's where his value is at. Kirk is the closest to a point guard that isn't a point guard on the team currently. If Duhon is hitting his shots and making plays for others...he is the best option at the point.  However, when he doesn't make his shots and is just walking the ball up the floor and passing it around the perimeter...then there are better options to put out there. I always love to see Duhon on the floor with Noah or Thomas because usually these two guys don't get as many touches as they deserve.  Kirk likes passing the ball to perimeter players much more.  He'll ignore a Thomas or Noah in the post to pass to a Nocioni, Deng, Gordon out on the perimeter.  Another reason people keep regarding us as a jump shooting team.  The only post players that Kirk doesn't ignore much when posting up are guys like Gray and Gooden.

do you watch the game?
kirk hits those guys all the time.  they usually get fouled going up for the layup, so it never makes the highlights.  Duhon and TT are usually in together against second teams which is they make the highlight plays.  Noah and TT had at least three of those with Hinrich last night.
Don't tell anybody, but here's hoping TT puts it all together.

um, yes?
Kirk ignores them all the time.  I guess the few times where he does pass to them makes up for all the times he doesn't?

Is it possible
THat your observation is biased a bit on your dislike for hinrich? IM sure there is a stat out there that would better represent who kirk and duhon pass it to, although i wouldnt know which one it would be. Also i dont believe kirk has jason kidd, steve nash, or chris paul court vision. Ive never heard hinrich be associated with the phrase "he has eyes in the back of his head". In the half court i do believe hinrich struggles in play making.

I dont think he ignores players, but tries to make smart moves, and although hitting the guy in the paint might lead to an effective play, its not easy to hit a guy in the paint. Post players are different, they tend to start sort outside of the paint and work there way in, so its easy to give them an entry pass. Tyrus and noah usually move in and out of the paint, and its a much harder pass, which i think u would agree hinrich is probably not good enough to hit.

In other words, i dont think its lack of vision that causes him not to feed the guy for that spectacular dunk in the paint, but his lack of assertiveness or wanting to take such a risk with a pass.

THats how i see it though...ive already stated my opinions on hinrich may be biased, but i suppose its possible people who dont like hinrich may end up being biased against him. Im not saying its a factual case with u, but i am asking you to question yourself if that could be the case with yourself.

I don't hate Hinrich
In fact my main motivation to view games right now is to watch our young players develop.  When Noah and Tyrus are on the court I pay attention to where they move and their attempts to get open to receive the ball.  Many times, I felt they could have gotten the ball but were ignored.  Hinrich isn't the only one that does this...guys like Deng as well.  In fact I've seen both of those guys motion for Noah to get out of the way when Noah was posting up so they have room to maneuver themselves.  Recently I posted a sequence where Hinrich could have fed Noah 3 times but didn't.  The third time was Noah standing wide open underneath the basket...you have to make that pass.  Hinrich passed it around the perimeter to Gooden instead and Gooden saw Noah but had a worse angle to pass to him and forced a bad one.  Those were passes Duhon could have made so I'm not saying we needed a Paul/Nash/Kidd to get it to him.

Soka
I understand then, it is foul play on hinrich if he doesnt commit to the smarter more effective play. Id like to make an excuse (an im sure i can come up with reasons) but sadly im not hinrich nor someone affiliated with him who would know the reasons for such happenings.

However considering my original post, and ures, i dont know if this is more evidence of hinrich having poor court vision, or just making bad decisions...i also think this sort of problem can be worked out so it probably doesnt automatically mean he can never be a decent pg or player even.

Hinrich has flaws, of course he probably isnt an all star level guard, but i think he is serviceable to the extent that though he may not be a pure sg or pure pg, putting him next to another all star guard would set his role better and allow him to play alot better. I think he and gordon are really tied in value towards the team. And that in terms of which guard has to go, he may not be dead last but should be a close second.

I wont repeat myself (not that i havent already) so if anyone wants to reread my post above you can see what i feel about the guards. Also Parrotman apologiez if my posts annoy you or anything, i just thought i should give you an answer to your posts...although i dont mean to go into an impossible argument.

I've never seen that
and the fact that you had to go back two games for an example is telling, at least to me.  But I'll watch for it.  You might be right, but just because Noah has his guy posted doesn't make him the best option.
Don't tell anybody, but here's hoping TT puts it all together.

Yeah, I give Boylan props on that as well
Hughes can only blame himself. 0-6 and got abused on D in 21 minutes. It's his fault.
