Open Game Thread #63: Bulls at Detroit Pistons
[ed. note: Thanks to chgobr for today's game preview. -Matt]
Angles to today's Detroit game.
1- You cannot ignore the shocking possibility of the Bull's sweeping the 2007-08 Detroit series with a win tonight. The Bulls have won 5 straight regular season games against a Detroit team that is 23-5 at home.
2- Motivational bounce-back from the ESPN tongue-lashing. During the Boston game the ESPN announcers repetitively pointed out how we are a pathetic, defensively weak, lifeless, non-hustling, jump-shooting, shitty team. Despite some of us agreeing it seemed a bit harsh.
3- Our Boylan frustration is highlighted by his cliché coaching after the Boston game.
4- TT and Thabo should return today.
5- Watch Deng and Gordon play. Are they playing poorly or just not as good as we thought? Today's game contributes to the summer salary negotiations melodrama which heats up in July.
6- Will Noah continue his stellar play? He may be the steal of the 2007 draft. Who now would take Ji, Hawes or Corey Brewer over Noah?
7- The half-full entry - Despite Boylan's ineptitude I am happier today after moving the Corpse for Hughes and Gooden.
8- We are ½-game behind NJ and 1 behind Atlanta for the 8th spot
There isn't much we don't know about this Detroit team. Rasheed Wallace sat out the last game with a sore ankle. I think they just wanted to rest him against the pathetic Knicks and I expect him to play tonight. I do not know of any Detroit injuries that would keep them from playing tonight. The only thing in the Detoit papers a bit interesting is McDyess's recent poor play
As usual - I hope our Bulls play well and we can enjoy a rare surprise win.

Poor Thabo
If they lose tonight you can blame me as I'm wearing my Bulls shirt today.
I wouldn't mind a lazy Detroit today
We're better off, right?
I'm not sure what to expect. I'm actually slightly worried.

Full confession:
Anyway, I think the behind the backboard rule is stupid, so that doesn't bother me much, but when the bench is yelling at the UCLA players to foul and the Cal guy is getting mugged on the rebound before that last possession, I find it ridiculous they didn't call the foul.
But I'll quit with the NCAA talk before Matt Joe-Joe's me to blog Siberia.

It was a bad pass, but he didn't dribble the
Noce hadn't passed midcourt, got doubled, and dropped it off to Tyrus. He had to get it over the time line.
Then he should have dropped it to Kirk.
Exactly...
Not to beat a dead horse but that's the kind of thing you learn from practice, and the kind of mistake a rookie makes.
Same old Tyrus.
If Gooden had done that this board would have jumped all over him.

Gooden has been in the league five years.
He isn't going to improve by playing.
TT will.
And so far, this game, Gooden has thrown up a couple of airballs and played shit defense. Last game, he got thrown out. Useless bearded clam.
Are you talking about Tyrus?
On another play, he got the ball from Luol as he was cutting down the lane, went up and got hammered. No call. But not a bad play by Tyrus.
On another play, Tyrus threw a nice pass over the top of two defenders to Luol, who cut in, got blocked, then had Noah clean up the miss.
Those are the only other offensive plays that Tyrus had, so far as I can recall.

I look at Deng and I see his game could be like past players like Adrian Dantley, Bernard King and Mark Aguirre. Neither of those guys were great athletes and were overmatched in that category nearly every night, but they all had a back to the basket game that allowed them to dominate.
I attached a little stat comparison chart for fun. Shows Dantley and King in year one of their careers (Aguirre in year two because he was hurt in year one and Deng in year three because that has been his best season).

Three airballs by the Beard!
About Deng not being very physical......
But you can look at LeBron when he was a rookie and look at him now and easily tell that he has gotten stronger. There are other examples but LeBron is the most obvious example. Deng looks heavier, but not necessarily stronger. It appears he doesn't have much upper body strength and no explosion in his legs. What do you guys think?
Another example.

Jim Boylan is a double agent.
Looking at Box Score
The only reason hughes should be allowed to play is if we need points (CUZ HE COULD GET TO THE LINE< BUT HE DOESNT!!!!) or if a guard needs a break. I dont understand why hinrich doesnt get playing time if he really isnt making any mistakes in the game. Why must they keep pushing a ben gordon and larry hughes backcourt?? Why not go to what works, Kirk and Ben, the Ying Yang guards.
Also looking at some of the highlights of the game, Billups is everything kirk is, but a better leader. The two play the game in the same fashion. Both are not great scorers or PURE pgs, yet they manage to get the job done. The big difference is Billups is willing to and does make the big shots, while hinrich backs away. Also on that team, billups is the clear cut leader, those men follow him no matter what. Kirk should take notes and take his game up a notch.
Why leave out that Kirk
And what better way to assess someones impact on the team than how the team does when someone is playing as opposed to not?? It's an excellent barometer, actually. Much better than what most of the people on here seem to do. I.e. only looking at offensive output. Which is why mostly everybody is (wrongly) head over heels in love with Ben Goron on this site. Blech!
by Bass on Mar 10, 2008 5:14 AM CDT up reply actions
It's another case of double-speak
Benching as punishment
a small guard line-up
gordon & hughes is a far superior matched set at this level of competition.
coming out of uconn ... ben gordon needed to play the PG, exclusively, in his first few years in the NBA, to learn 'how' the game works in this league. if he had, by this point, he'd already be one of the top PG's in the NBA, as he would have learned to limit his TO's, limit his overall shot attempts, run a team effectively, and use his supreme ability to get his own shot off & score with ease ... when he's matched up vs the other PG's in this league, rather than the lock-down guys who patrol the floor vs the big-time wing scorers in the NBA.
shame on the Bulls brain-trust for not acknowledging this reality sooner.
there is considerable reason for optimism in Chicago ... IF their GM is able to see clearly the path ahead.
- Get rid of boylan, fast.
- Make gordon the starting PG.
- Use hughes, deng, sefolosha & noc as the key wings.
- Make thomas & noah permanent fixtures in the front-court, supported by gray coming off the bench for an entirely different 'look'.
- Use duhon as the defensive, pass-first, shoot-last, inexpensive, veteran back-up PG every good team needs.
- Trade hinrich & gooden for the next piece to the puzzle Chicago needs to continue its climb up the Eastern Conference standings for the next 3 to 4 years ... as this core of players evolves to the point of contending for the championship.
just for you sue ...
have a great day.
I'm gonna put this here
And Noah yelled back at him.
Boylan is a douche let's yell at arguably our best defensive player cuz someone's guy scored and he didn't help out.
Maybe if Gordon didn't suck at defense Noah wouldn't have to guard the lane all th time.
How about Boylan yells at someone who can't play defense? Gordon, Deng, Hughes, Gooden...
by Ed on Mar 10, 2008 5:28 AM CDT reply actions
Skiles...
I think the prime difference between Skiles and Boylan is that when Skiles yelled at you he was probably at least communicating (poorly) some useful information.
Boylan seems to like the sound of his angry voice.
My issue with that was that Joakim
For someone who started out spouting these ideas about the guys needing to feel free to make mistakes and not tense from looking over their shoulders all the time, he's sure got a short leash and a sticky bench.
