Extended garbage time

With the Bulls all-but-officially eliminated from the playoffs, it's difficult to find a reason to watch the final 9 games of the season.

First of all, Boylan's still coaching:

Boylan doesn't think it's time to change the rotation in favor of the younger players...Even when the Bulls are officially eliminated from playoff contention, Boylan didn't sound as though he's planning to make drastic changes in playing time.

(There has been one drastic change: Chris Duhon's back in the rotation. Why? who knows!)

Whatever Boylan rambles, it at least looks like the team is starting the subtle, seductive dance of tanking. The first move being Drew Gooden being held out of Sunday's game with an abdominal strain, giving the start to Tyrus Thomas. Unlike Boylan's unintentional tanking, sitting guys with injuries makes sense. (although one guy who's been battling injuries all season, Luol Deng, is in a contract year, so I doubt he'll be sitting.)

So it's tempting to think if we see guys like Tyrus and Thabo getting more minutes (although they had 22 and 17 minutes respectively, so it's not quite free reign yet anyway) that playing out this string may actually teach us something about those two, Noah, and the team.

But sadly, this is not just a pointless stretch of games in terms of record, but also evaluation.

The Bulls will be phoning it in, not running plays on offense or giving an effort on defense, and it's likely they'll see a few opponents who will be doing the same. Heck, Curry and Chandler had a great stretch run together in a similar environment...it's a loosely-played style of basketball that's more towards the playground than professional end of the hoops spectrum.

If certain players thrive, it shouldn't be viewed with much encouragement. Not discouragement either, except perhaps at the idea that more sensible rotation decisions could've been made earlier when the games still mattered.

Why
not play the young guns? This guy is clueless. Coaches dont punch clocks they teach. This guy is a nanny, caretaker, babysiter, chaperon and thats all he ever will be. When the season is lost you play the young guys. When you get blown out you play the young guys. It makes them better to get EXP. DUHHH! Personally I'd rather see Du play than Hughes because atleast Du runs plays and makes other players around him better. I hope they're both gone this summer though. BG has got to go too! No offense to anyone who really likes him but his turn stylee defense is just disturbing.. More than likely he will take the QO and we'll right back here next year complaining of the same crap with him. Have the Bulls even been running plays since Boylan took over? The look lost out there..
Felt good to see TT get the start. Guy darn near gets a Double Double while in foul trouble most of the game.

Anyone got TT's starters stats? Average PPG, BS, AS, RB, TO, Fouls?

i seriously dont like you. You always make stupid childish remarks. You clearly hate anyone who likes TT or supports him. You obviously dont recall where we drafter him or what he means to this teams future. Ever heard of google? Your a joke please dont reply do any of my comments again you make me sick.

I have no big problems with TT
other than he is a little immature.  You don't see me posting trade comments every day involving him, do you?  I do have problems with commenters who think we give a shit about their half-assed gut feelings and are too lazy to look up simple stats, though.

I was pissed
Last Week and/or weekend (can't remember) when we didn't outtank the Bucks....for a better ping pong chance....taht was frustrating.

I haven't been following us as closely since 2 weeks ago (Since those back to back awful 4th qtr collapses and the continued benching of the young guys.....

Hopefully we can make a splash this summer via a new coach and/or trade.....I definately think Coaching is our top priority though, but I'll gladly post trade ideas on here every now and then.

Just watching Boylan try to win games cause he's so terrible, we'll probably lose them.

Tyrus starter minutes
Is at 23.6, so basically he's not even starting. Why is it so hard for us to give him and Noah 30 min plus, fouls be damned. These kids are 21, 22 years old, let them play, if they foul, they foul, they turn the ball over, then so be it

I'm so glad we traded a solid low-post guy
For someone who we can't even judge as a bust or not because the coaching staff won't even give him enough minutes.
Dickey Simpkins>Ben Wallace

by Ozzie Montana on Mar 31, 2008 6:44 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Don't remind me of that
I was referring to Aldridge.  I guess he wasn't "solid" coming out of the draft, but all the tools were there for him to succeed, whereas Tyrus was more of a crapshoot with a higher ceiling.  I was all for the trade because this team needs his freakish athleticism, but if the team doesn't play him, then what was the point of trading away the safer bet in LaMarcus?
Dickey Simpkins>Ben Wallace

by Ozzie Montana on Mar 31, 2008 8:59 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Isnt aldridge
A younger, slightly better version of Joe Smith...not really a post player, thats why oden will really help that portland team (maybe..). I think in regards of tools, thomas has them, he just doesnt have anyone to help him hone them. I am assuming by tools you mean physical capabilities by the way, and thomas has alot of that. I always thought however we could do without a post presence so long as we had a solid offense that didnt always revolve around jumpshooting.

Isnt that why deng was heralded as our big star, he was a guy who could shoot that 20 footer with complete accuracy and then attack the rim and slash with teh best of them, couple that with the bulls unselfish style of play and hard nosed defense and whatever they lacked in "pureness" or skill, this team would be able to compensate with all the pieces working together.

Its not a single player thats the problem this year, its the simple fact that the players stopped working as a unit, and they stopped progressing or developing that style of play. If they can get back to that style of play then we still have all the right pieces, however developing guys like thomas who will have the athleticism to attack the basket and prevent the other team from doing so is a big part of that i think.

This is just my personal thoughts, sorry about the rant.

Why is Boylan doing this?
Does he think that he could win the job if the bulls win the last games of the season? That's the only explanation to choose Gooden and (awful) Hughes instead of TT and Thabo. What a idiot! He's going to be fire anyway, doesn't he understands that? He's finished!!!
The kids are the only thing that makes want to watch the games. Noting else. If they don't get minutes now that we are out of the playoffs, when do they will get?????

One thing I don't get
is why everybody takes everything Boylan says at face value.  Wait until the games play out.  Both Noah and TT started last game and Thabo has been and continues to get significant minutes, maybe not 30 a game, but good minutes most games.  Why would Boylan come out and say,"Well damn, it's basically over so who gives shit."

Did your dog die or something
Because your outlook has taken a real nosedive lately.  At what point are you going to get over the fact that the bulls aren't actually going to contend for the eastern conference title this year?

It's the 4th quarter of the season and you're still clinging to a lead.  I know the rest of team has their collective heads stuck somewhere (the Gerald Green diary), but are you going to follow up their egregious TO by throwing in the towel, too?  Are you going to be a leader or a quitter?  ;-)

The future is still bright for these Bulls, and while they may have taken a big step back this year, all the pieces are still there and they can take two steps forward next year.  There is absolutely no reason to be such a sour puss.  If nothing else, you should celebrating the fact that the era of small ball is in a death spiral.  A new coach with a new philosophy is right around the corner.  What's there not to be excited about?  C'mon Matt, snap out of it.

by Ozzie Montana on Mar 31, 2008 9:08 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I have the same outlook
these next 9 games have nothing to do with it either way, that's my point. We should already know Tyrus will perform when he plays. Big friggin' deal, we knew that last season and where did that get him?

I'm still angry about Paxson fucking up the whole season, even when it was clear the team wasn't winning anything substantial, they were still clinging to bullshit hollow victories with a clown show running a rampantly idiotic playing rotation. The daily quotes made things even worse.

So if you want to turn the page already and feel cheery about it, fine. I think I'll still be a while before getting over it.

Even worse is that when it was fucking happening, you were still saying it was all ok. So I couldn't complain about it then, and can't complain about it now.

My dog got an M-80 shoved up his ass around week 3.

By all means vent
I don't think I've stopped anybody from doing that.  But don't be a sour puss.  We're all bummed they sucked.  But it isn't like they started sucking two weeks ago.  Get it out and let it go.  The sooner you move on the better.  There is absolutely no reason to hang on to anything about this season.  Enjoy the rest of the games for what they are, don't dwell on  what they aren't because there is nothing you can do about it either way.

Shame on you, bullshooter.
I think you should be especially mindful about expressing any opinion that may potentially be construed as unkind or, horrors, patronizing to dear Matt.  It would be so cruel and thoughtless to even inadvertently injure his tender feelings...particularly so, since he takes such diligent care to protect ours.

And Matt, you should be happy people try to get under your skin, rather than suck up to you (which I'm pretty sure was bullshooter's implication in his "how hard you try" comment).  No leader (yes, you are the leader here) worth a damn wants a chorus of adoring sycophants.

Finally, my apologies to both of you--it seems no matter how old one is, a middle child never escapes the "fix both ends" syndrome.  I'm sure you can work it out just fine between yourselves. :)

My biggest peeve...
...and I'm guessing sbulls9030 and some others, too, is that the Deng-Thomas-Noah frontcourt probably hasn't gotten 60 minutes together. (they might--different guard combos may have kept them off the Top 20) That's the front court of the future, or at least should be. I can't fathom, in all of Boylan's "I'm just throwing stuff out there to see what sticks" idiocy, he's already determined this couldn't work.

What's worse? Hinrich, Hughes, Deng, Gooden, Noah is already the second-most used lineup of the year.

Prepare to be disappointed then
Why would you expect anyone to give up really good players for our players?  Most of our players have had lousy seasons.  The only ones who haven't are Deng and Noah, and those are probably the last guys you'd want to trade anyways.  No one's going to give up a really good player for the privilege of paying Kirk Hinrich or Ben Gordon $10 million a year.

No more cutting Deng slack
His game is exactly the same as last year, and he doesn't deserve more than 50 million dollars.  How many games did he have where he scored 20 points through 3 quarters, then did absolutely nothing in the 4th?  Every player on this roster deserves to be intensely scrutinized over the summer, and whether they actually belong on this team or not.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Apr 1, 2008 10:25 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Should have made myself clearer
Obviously no one on the team is untouchable, but you wouldn't want to trade Deng unless you got a really good offer.  Yes, he's had a a disappointing year, but it's a matter of degree.  His disappointing year isn't the same as, say, Ben Wallace's disappoointing year.  Deng is still young, and he's still probably the Bull with the most value.  Maybe that means they can get something really good for him, but all I was saying was that given his age, you'd be more reluctant to trade him than you would somebody like Hinrich or Hughes.

by Big D on Apr 1, 2008 10:38 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Hughes is a bad example
but I wouldn't be that much more reluctant to trade Deng that BG or Hinrich.  I think you could get a lot more athletic 3 than Deng and I think that would benefit the bulls immensely.  Plus Deng now has a pretty lengthy history of injuries.  And he didn't exactly get better this year over last or help pull the team out of its rut, either.

Magette and Igoudala
would be interesting swaps for Deng.  But it would have to be for somebody better than Deng, and do you think Childress or Outlaw are or are going to be better than Deng?  Caron Butler or maybe Gerald Wallace would be upgrades too.  Those guys aren't that much older than Deng (Magettes is 28.)

I was asking you
I don't think any of those players are demonstrably better. But a bit different.

Caron Butler is better, but older and unavailable anyway. Gerald Wallace is a few years older (25) and a big injury risk.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Apr 1, 2008 1:37 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

What's G. Wallace's injury risk?
He doesn't seem to have any more than Deng.

For that matter, he's only 25, so it's not like he's incredibly old.

I'd never really though about him, but I could see an improvement for both teams.

Charlotte seems to have a hard time meshing Wallace and JRich.  Two guys that are slashers.  Deng might help since he's not that type of player.

We're in the opposite situation.  We're all shooters and no finishers.

I think on the whole I'd still prefer Deng, but another thing to consider is that Wallace's 5yrs and just under $50M remaining is the same or less than what Deng turned down.

If you wanna play doctor with Gerald Wallace
feel free.

As I said, injury prone as compared with Deng, who also has had his share of problems.

Wallace has played in 257 out of 320 games. 80%
Deng has played in 275 out of 319 games. 86%

So Deng has a slight advantage, but it's really not much of one.

More athletic like Gerald Green?
What is it with people here and their crappy labels?  Pure point.  More athletic.  Consistent.  Solid low post scorer.  There's one word to use.  Better.  Bulls need a better PG, not just a pure PG. Bulls need a better SG, not just a taller SG. Bulls need a better SF, not just a more athletic SF. Bulls need a better PF, not just a more consistent PF. Bulls need a better C, not just a solid low post scoring C.

If you pigeonhole these positions into certain types of players, you miss the quality players that exist on the team.  Not to mention, most of the labels used don't really mean anything.

Deng may not be the most athletic SF in the NBA, but he still has a good chance of developing into an All Star.  Even if he doesn't, he's already a solid starter and most likely will remain so.  He's probably never going to be the type to take over a game.  His disappearances late in games can be frustrating.  That doesn't mean he should be dismissed and discarded.
