Open Game Thread #71: Bulls at Philadelphia 76ers

How sad is this: last season the Bulls were where the Sixers wanted to be, and this year the Sixers (6pm CST, WCIU) are where the Bulls want to be, and that's the shallow goal of 7th seed in the Eastern Conference. Actually, the Sixers have been winning so much that they're the 6th seed (and a half game out of 5).

I read this from Roland Laird today, a recent Q&A with Sixers management:

For starters, he [Sixers coach Mo Cheeks] said point blank, that he played Thaddeus Young because the GM told him to.
And that's a new GM, Ed Stefanski, saying it to a (relatively) established NBA coach. Paxson can't even tell his bozo interim to play someone Pax picked ten spots ahead of Young a year earlier. Blech.

The Philadelphia announcers
make it seem like the Bulls are losing by twenty. "They haven't made a legitimate shot ye.. oh okay they finally made one. SO WHAT."

On another note, I wish my name was Thaddeus. No sarcasm intended, that name is just awesome.

You can see the division during that timeout
Gordon shooting the 3 after the timeout and strolling slowly back to bench, coaches out on the floor and players on the bench... Noone is communicating.  Extremely sad.  Paxson deserves the boot.

WERE DOWN BIG IN THE FIRST!!!! This is what the bulls need, i mean seriously, if we were up by double digits right now id be sweaty of anxiety, yet they are down...RELIEF!!! At least there wont be some crazy 4th quarter meltdown by the bulls, indeed, it is the 76ers who have to bear that fear. YES!!!!!

In the 1st quarter
Boylan played 10 guys.  He played Deng and Noah 10 minutes each, and Hughes 12.  That means the other 7 guys split 28 minutes, or about 4 a piece.  I wonder if anyone will get into a rhythm.

The media
listens to Paxson, the players sometimes listen after he fines them.  Now if Paxson would only fine Boylan for being a idiot.

Boylan might then listen, but right now Boylan thinks Paxson is a chump because Skiles treated Paxson likewise.

Thaddeus Young 12pts, Tyrus Thomas 2pts (only 7 min.)

Paxson is hoping to do what Boston did
I think Pax keeping his mouth shut leaves Boylan open to losing more games meaning better draft pick.

Then Pax trades a lot of young talent for proven players.

But you need a good draft pick to do that so this is what is taking place

Yeah Bullish...
...if you look at my past posts I was the KING Deng basher around here.  My man bullshooter talked me off the ledge though.  His talkin' to me got me to explain that my only problem with Deng was that he thinks he's worth $10 mil a year and at that price he is every bit the bum you and I both described him as.  But at a more reasonable price of 6 or 7 mil a year (which I doubt he'll take because somebody will offer him more and he'll be a better player alongside a superstar) I'd think differently of him.  Call me spoiled, but I hold shooting guards and small forwards in this town to a high standard.  Not that we'll ever see two like #23 and #33 again, but I want some serious ball players on the wing in this city!!!

... I believe Sefalosha has the potential to be a pretty damn good pro.  I love what this guy brings to the table.  If I had to say we had a potential future all-star on this team, in my mind it would be Sefalosha.  With a summer of improvement on both ends and guaranteed minutes at the 2 (unless we somehow get Kobe or Wade in Chicago), there is no reason Sefalosha won't blossom.  This kid oozes upside and I hope we do the right thing and lock him up as soon as we can.

I watched the end of the Cav- NO game
Chris Paul really is something special.  Down 1 with 7.7 seconds to go in the game NO had the ball.  LeBron was guarding Paul who had the ball.  He started slowly, faked right and blew by LeBron left.  He drove into the lane and about four Cleveland players collapsed on him.  He passed to David West who hit a 18 foot wide open jumper just past the top of the key with .6 seconds left.  Paul was terrific.  Ben Wallace didn't play.  He remains a Corpse.  Ridding ourselves of the Corpse is one of the few joys of the season.

Sam Smith's last mailbag is up
http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/basketball/bulls/askthewriter/cs-080326asksamsmith,0, 2386058.story

And I got a question in!  What an honor.

Why is everyone assuming that the addition of Larry Hughes means that Ben Gordon will be traded in the offseason? I've been disappointed in Gordon this year, but he's younger than Hughes, better than Hughes, and will be making less money than Hughes. I know Gordon wants a big contract, but nobody's going to give him $13 million a year, which is what Hughes is making. --Dan, Chicago

Well, the Cavs have spent almost two seasons trying to trade him. They made the investment to help persuade LeBron to reup, though he did for only three years. It's why they had to overpay. Hughes came thinking he'd be a tandem with James, but there is no such thing. As a result, I think it's going to be virtually impossible to deal Hughes, and if you have to pay Gordon and then I'd assume Deng, that's your team, and I think Bulls management has seen enough of this group together. The Bulls didn't necessarily want Hughes, but it was the cost of getting rid of Ben Wallace and I do think given his age as Hughes gets closer to the end of his contract he will have more trade appeal than Wallace, perhaps by next trading deadline in February 2009.

C. better start to give a shit about winning you rich selfish prick, or i'm going to find some way to void your idiotic, colossal waste of a contract you overpaid piece of shit.

then larry hughes needs to get benched, or get cut. he is useless if he isn't using his size to play real defense or his quickness to attack the basket.

It's his last one
I emailed him today and asked him about the Deng situation, and the whole coaches not working with players thing.

He said Deng will be a Bull (he'll get over whatever is upsetting him), and that the coaches do work with the players, so he doesn't know where the whoe coaches won't work with them comes from.

He's only gone if he wants big money.
If he's satisfied in the $8-10 mil range, he can porbably work out a deal with the bulls.  Signing for one more year at 6.5 mil and playing no D and tripping over himself while occasionally going for 30 isn't going get him any bigger deals anywhere else.

If I were him I'd sign a two year deal for whatever the bulls would go up to and then bust my ass being a more rounded player and set myself up as a consolation prize for all those teams with cap room who miss out on LBJ/Wade/Melo.  He'll be 27 then and could easily get a 4 year deal for bigger money.  But he isn't getting that this year.

Second night in a row I've had to miss the game
But I have a feeling this one won't take long to get through.  Maybe I'll watch to be reminded what a feisty young team looks like.  From the boxscore, it looks like Noc had a better night at least, and Thabo and Kirk shot well.

I guess Drew (Dwight!) used up all his "hotness" last night?  That would be shooting hotness - I'm more into scruffy than mountain man ;)

Maybe I'll take up hockey.

he's now undoubtedly earned
the patented bullshooter 'inconsistent' tag. Thabo didn't have a good game last night, either, so label him as well. ;-p

I think tonight was a lack of focus
it was his first bad game in at least two weeks.  If his output starts yo-yo'ing then he'll earn the dreaded inconsistent tag.  It takes more than one game to get there.  :-p

Tyrus goes negative
TT was a -2 tonight and comitted his 2nd turnover in the last 8 games, the bum.  Some of you have noticed I've tracked the Bulls (+-) over this period where his shooting has been around 27%.  Maybe he should never get on the court again, but then again maybe he should play more.  Once again here are the overall (+-) numbers for that stretch:

Player          Minutes         (+-)
Hughes         241:16           -28

Deng            289:21           -33

Noah            197:27            -31

Gooden         285:58           -20

Gordon         232:11           -54

Nocioni          111:59           -17

Nichols             7:47            +5

Gray              51:23            +8

Thabo          168:11              0

Kirk             230:10              0

THOMAS       115:24            +26

Duhon             3:25             +3

So the way I see it, if we stick with the guard tandem of Kirk and Thabo we may luck out and wind up in a tie.

TT did a good job tonight
of going to the front of the rim.

i used to watch
all the way through losses, especially when we were down early (and shut it off early if i felt like it was over)... but now i don't even do that... i just ff'ed through most of it.

we don't even look like we care... thabo and maybe joakim are the only ones who look like they are paying any attention.

how can you tell that
if you only ff'd through most of it?  which play did you see that convinced you that Gray didn't care?  I think most of them care, but can't find a way to collectively show and instead try to hard individually.  And Larry Hughes throwing up bricks doesn't help.

i lied
i actually watched almost the entire 1st half on normal speed.

maybe gray does care too, but i have never seen a group so uninterested as the team i was watching play tonight.  they were throwing it away everywhere and seemed like they couldn't hang onto the ball.
