Open Game Thread #49: Bulls at Golden State Warriors
[Big thanks to wjb1492 for today's game preview. -Matt]
Last night, the few Bulls actually available to play came close to beating the Blazers. With Lu, BG and Kirk on the bench with injuries, and Veektor on his way to freedom, Noc, Du, and Thabo all logged 40+ minutes of PT. Senior citizens Ben Wallace and Joe Smith both played 30 minutes or more. Ty even got more than one stint of PT. And tonight's opponent, the Golden State Warriors? They were enjoying their 5th night in a row off. Maybe they'll be rusty...
The second night of back-to-backs has not been good for the Bulls this season, with a dismal record of 3 and 9. On top of that, the team will be playing short handed again, and those guys that went 40 minutes last night could be playing on fumes against the well-rested and up-tempo Warriors. And just for fun, in the event of a total blow-out, the game is on TNT (the late one, no less!)so we can get Sir Charles and crew's take on the Bulls' shortcomings. All of which means I'm going to be royally pissed when I have to get up tomorrow morning on a short night's sleep, unless the Bulls manage to pull off the win tonight. According to accuscore, which gives the Bulls only a 21% probablity of winning, we should all just go to bed. On the other hand, who'd want to skip Chris Webber's return? I'm almost as intrigued to see how he fits in with GS as I am to watch Shaq run with the Suns. Hey, it's not like the Bulls have new additions for us to wonder about.
Get well soon, Kirk, Lu and BG. I miss my delusional expectations of winning.

Wha, wha, whaaat?
PS - I'm setting the over-under on TT's minutes at 21 minutes (it is a back-to-back after all). Place yer bets.

Breakout game for Tyrus!
T2's busting out today!

Though one alarming note
by Freethefro on Feb 7, 2008 8:39 PM CST up reply actions
Seriously?
As long as Smith and Wallace are here, I'll take the under, and swear about it.
And the over takes the day!
A great game for him. I kept expecting him to be sitting out of timeouts in the 4th but was pleasantly surprised. We need more of that and more Noah after some very effective 1st quarter minutes.

With the buyout of Kyrhapa
I'm going to bed.
Boylan cost us the game the last time
His absolutely moronic fourth quarter rotation, especially in the backcourt, practically handed Golden State the victory.
I have rarely been that livid after a Bulls game.
livid after a Bulls game
But I had forgotten how pissed I was too after the last GS game....until you reminded me.
BTW - Ben Gordon has officially made the "pussy" list....
injured, my arse...

Nice use of Carmina Burana during
That was rousing.
That being said, f*** Golden State.
I like the aggressive, unforgiving Chitown
Holy shit Chris Webber is fat
Um
Maybe he ate Sweetney!
Weird

Did Joe Smith play this well when he was
I can't imagine why he wouldn't have been a force when he was young and fit. He undoubtedly has skills, at least at this stage of his career.
I think he was pretty much the same player
I understand why Duhon is standing around
Du has gone off.
who GIVES a rip
Geeez, czar....
I know I am in the minority here, but
I am watching the WGN feed. At least I can find some comic relief in Red's paroxysms.
I'm stuck with the TNT boys
Wow
Du is going for 60 baby!
so we should fire out training
We look slow tonight
Like chris webber, I'm baaaaaaaack
Also like chris webber, I cant really jump that high or run that fast, or belong in the NBA
Unlike chris webber, when my state of michigan school paid for me to come here, it was totally legal
BAM!
Du keeps playing like this,
Griffin is the curse.
FUCKING GRIFFIN
Nice turn over A drain
Clock work.
And worse yet
Why in the world did Skiles and now Boylan praise griffin's play?
How many times have we heard shit talk about his "defensive prowess"??
ugh.
Booyah! Noah!
who would u take in a foot race
holy shit noah
you put of kiss on the finish line
Is it just me?
And I'm so not being sarcastic. He seemed so freaking rad
Boylan: "Duhon can really fill it up"
Boylan says
WHAT???
He was 15 pointsin the 1st, he won't end with more than 25..
What's Duhon over/under pts, spotting 15 through 1?
That made me laugh
Although to be fair, he has had a couple of weird, zoned-in games during his career. Tonight would be a good time for one!
he had Triple Doubles
nice open court move by thabo
Boy
But with high scoring team like GS even being uo by 20 is not safe for us.
Gordon 43% career, 42.4% '07-'08.
I'm not 100% serious about getting rid of one, much less both. But those ARE the stats.
TT @ the 3
This drives me crazy.
It's not optimal.
I like him more at the 4 as well.
I guess beggars can't be choosers
Gimme some of that! BAM! :)
i like what boylan was telling noah
Carrying is called so inconsistently in
I never woulda thought
...until Boylan....
Shyte.
That was a terrible call on Tyrus.
who's our fourth guard?
I'm all for
Duhon-Thabo-TT-Noah-Wallace
this is where Tyrus should play
Oh, no...time out by Boylan
TT plays poorly in the first half
GS is going to start posting up Du
It's what they did last game.
Bulls have to figure out who they're going
Tyrus doesn't need help on that play.
Duhon is having the best game of his career.
Bulls are losing their poise.
Okay Boylan
BEFORE the lead is completely gone.
Do you get the feeling that they were all
yeah
At least Boylan recognized that GS was
He isn't making the same mistake he made in Chicago.
Not only did he recognize it,
"It's a miracle! A Festivus miracle!"
If you are going to fuckign foul someone,
Jesus.
WTF???
BW starts to melt down, and he leaves him in rather than play Noah who has played GREAT tonight.
And the lead is gone....
worst three on 2 ever
Because Boylan didn't replace anyone
Not one f-ing thing.
I meant on that last play
He's our enforcer!
Riiiight....
Frattello said it right:
F!
20 for Du
did she interview him?
Yes, I'm sure she is. She could probably whip him one-on-one even today.
Complete and utter loss of composure.
If you see somone loading up for a dunk and you want to stop easy points, you HAMMER the motherfucker in his shoulder. You don't reach out and gently tickle his taint with a feather.
Drives me nuts.
The Bulls got flustered by the crowd and made dumb TO's.
The Bulls got flustered
That's true to a certain extent.
It's just one of those idiosyncratic things that drives me insane.
you're right
Think Pax is talking to Houston
Houston
we dont have the guards to trade duh
Barkley just called Pipp
Coming from Barkley that has to hurt No Tippin Pippin
Come on, Noc.
And the Bulls melt in the 3rd
on the plus side
Bulls need to find a way to get
how is there no foul on that
oracle crowd chanting
nice job by sefolosssssssssssshhhhhhha
Du
Noc's dumbf*** four point play
and the Bulls are foolishly succumbing to the GS ghetto streetball rhythm.
This gets SOOOO F-ing old
- How does Boylan not see this coming from the last few minutes of the first half?
- How does Boylan not then make some subs to counter act it?
- How does Boylan not at least TRY what was working so well earlier with Noah and TT out there?
- HOW DOES BOYLAN JUST DO THE SAME OLD SHIT EVERY F-ING GAME?????
How does a professional basketball player

FINALLY
Hopefully they'll get it done DESPITE grifffff...
How did Du
If you don't play in a frenzy and turn the ball
Is TT still growing?
totally agree
GS's Davis and Barnes can yell at the ref, stare them down but not get a T.
Yet, our guys can get a T for reacting to a non-call.
GS has reached and fouled at least everytime we have taken it to the basket, yet nothing called.
Yet, we can bump their players and it's a foul, F'N RIDICULOUS!!!!!

Who the fuck is this guy?
by RogersPark Kris on Feb 7, 2008 11:34 PM CST reply actions
Du is playing like he is f'in possessed!
Du was right
He got POUNDED....
I love Du
The only reason this game is tied is because the
Jackson
Nice fuckign block by TT!
TT's had a couple or three blocks
good call
TT gettin' 4th q minutes
Griffin, you nightmare!
DAMMIT GRIFFFF!!!
Another block by TT!
god it was still at 17 when they claled it
TT and NOAH are relentless
Let them finish the game...
Chris duhon
I mean, no slumped shoulder and hesitant offense, and nice passing and no falling down....this is scary.
Should i be glad he is playing this??? Is this a one time game, I mean hes never gotten the chance to do this before, if he got another chance would he produce the same?
Maybe duhon stole the abilities of gordon and hinrich just for one night, nba players can do that you know.
I want to be happy, but i am very disturbed right now...so confused...
Hopefully hinrich and gordon are watching this, and are already getting ready to outplay duhon, cuz thats what this team needs, midget guards trying to constantly play better than one another at a high level.
Maybe he did just steal thier abilities...more logical i suppose...
Didnt they make a movie
Lol
shit im like a minute behind on tivo somehow
Gotta get Duhon back out there
Leave Thabo in
All the Bulls have to do to win is
wow
i'm convinced pax is having deng, ben and kirk sit out on purpose to take a look at what we got
by bullsfaninla on Feb 7, 2008 11:45 PM CST reply actions
Hey...careful.
Those TO's have to come back
Thabo can't dribble against these dudes!
The calls
Why can't they call the reaching fouls on them or the body fouls when the Bulls take it to the basket?
Jackson should have been T'd up again for his 2nd outburst!
I want to win this.
This is a game we should win.
This is a game we should win
that is some basketball there

lets not get too excited
you just cursed 'em
Boylan & Paxson should learn from this...
I think they've actually been
Don't fool yourself
none what-so-ever....
Come on, Bulls, make this ghettotastic
Just don't turn the ball over. Get off shots in your offensive sets. Get back on D. Make them beat you in the half court. Throttle the playground frenzy.
Bill - put a push-pin in China...
Nice jump hook TT!
And TT rolls his eyes at Boylan
what was that between boylan and TT?
yeah
by your friendly BullsBlogger on Feb 8, 2008 12:38 AM CST up reply actions
I could imagine what Boylan's
Tyrus is at the 4/5 right now.
TT needs to recorgnize he is a much better player at the 4, as does the coaching staff.
What TT is doing RIGHT NOW
So he should just keep doing it.
Screw all the other shit.
WINNING is all that matters.
TT's stroke at the FT line.
TTjumper!
tyrus
TT taking over the game
Rebounds, blocks, and made FGs...

and by that i mean
TERRIBLE CALL.
HORRIBLE CALL!!!
Yeah right.
The notion that GS has awesome crowds is a myth. Their crowds were horrific for years before last year's playoff win.

Kobe....
What a great win
First win in GS
Best Bulls win in a long long time!
And we won a game on the west coast against a legitimate opponent!!!
And Tyrus kicked ass in the fourth quarter and essentially won the game!!!!
And Duhon was MVP!
WOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Hahaha Warriors Fans
Exciting, but disappointing.

Ben was uncharacteristically productive SHOOTING last night. 0-7 from the line is still garbage.
woohoo!
by Freethefro on Feb 8, 2008 12:24 AM CST reply actions
Tyrus has far more of an impact at the 4.
And his post game!
Coaching:
Seems like Boylan has come around on Thabo and Noah, maybe Tyrus is next. Hard to imagine Thabo and Noah getting benched, playing this solidly. Even if we barely sniff the playoffs, the future still looks pretty bright for these Bulls.
It's all about consistency, IMO.
With Boylan forced to give them longer stretches
unfortunately
by your friendly BullsBlogger on Feb 8, 2008 12:43 AM CST up reply actions
Well, since we no longer have Khryapa to
Joe Smith has got to be roughly 15 minutes from his legs falling off after the past two nights!
Come on Thabo's going to the bench
heh
by your friendly BullsBlogger on Feb 8, 2008 12:40 AM CST up reply actions
In hindsight...
Very interesting comments from Joe Smith
Joe has been tutoring Tyrus all season. He says Tyrus has a tendency to overuse his spin move. He often tells Tyrus to take what the defense gives him. If the defense doesn't cut Tyrus off, Tyrus should use the jump hook. He was very proud of TT's play tonight.
damn
by your friendly BullsBlogger on Feb 8, 2008 12:35 AM CST up reply actions
That was just awesome
And now we get to listen to Charles dissect a win for once.
You think they'd throw in Gooden?
I don't want to trade the Core, but I will admit
When they get healthy, it sure would be nice to see that Noah, Tyrus, Deng, Kirk, Thabo lineup with Ben as sixth man.
my pants would be wet if this happened
by bullsfaninla on Feb 8, 2008 12:34 AM CST up reply actions
The Subs
yeah, well I already gave them max contracts
Getting those guys back means less Duhon (great game today aside), Nocioni (who I'm so fucking sick of), and Griffin.
by your friendly BullsBlogger on Feb 8, 2008 12:37 AM CST up reply actions
If nothing else
there's no more 'flashes' of Duhon
Plus against the Warriors it's easier for everyone to attack.

the best part of tonight's game
Two key plays
I think the same thing as Kerr, but this is only because we just don't see enough of Tyrus to know how much better his shot is this season.

I don't see how Tyrus
because
by ScottieCartwright on Feb 8, 2008 8:21 AM CST up reply actions
Tyrus was great (of course?), but Thabo
I was amazed to see TT get the opportunity to shine late, when his first half was mediocre. THIS IS THE VERY ISSUE WE WHO HAVE BACKED HIM ARE DRIVEN NUTS ABOUT. You just gotta play him. Play him until the good stuff happens.
And congrats to Du on his career best game!
After all our Du-bashing
The one not so bright spot
Golden State is very tough with
Even though the Warriors only defense is the TO, and they had 5 days off w/ Weber to introduce, I can't shake the feeling that the Bulls wouldn't have won this WITH Kirk and BG available.
Credit the Warriors
We only had 67 FG attempts. GSW had 95. Both teams had about the same number of rebounds. We just went to the line 48 times.
