Open Game Thread #48: Bulls at Portland TrailBlazers

First, some late-breaking news: Veektor had the remainder of his contract bought out. He could've been used as an expiring contract for at least some help, drats. We may have to give up on finding Pax's cell phone charger and settle for some strings and cans. The good string too, the kind Sam Smith can't tap.

Then again, maybe they needed the roster spot for a blockbust...oh I couldn't even finish typing that.

As for tonight's game, I think the Bulls would actually be on that fast track to mediocrity if they could stay healthy. With Luol out, he's not only re-joined by Gordon, but now Hinrich as well after injuring his ribs in Monday's game.  That's trouble. At least Tyrus Thomas is back after a one-game absence. Maybe Pax cut Khryapa to make sure Boylan didn't play him over Tyrus.

Before starting this preview I thought Gordon would be healthy, and therefore would use this space to bitch about not starting him instead of Duhon. What a shame, almost as big of a shame as watching a Duhon/Thabo backcourt all night. I suppose A-Drain is the backup.  As a cruel joke, the Blazers are unveiling a new 3-guard starting lineup tonight of Jack/Blake/Roy/Aldridge/Przybilla. I'm sure it kills Boylan (and Skiles from afar) that he doesn't have enough guards to use himself (then again, Boylan likely will play his only 3 at the same time). Think of the spacing!

This could be a really bad night. Even before the injuries I was expecting a letdown since usually after a win, and the local media reaction that tries extrapolate some miniscule success (5 minutes against the Sonics, yeesh), the Bulls usually find a way to promptly lay a big turd in the next game. But that's not due to raised expectations or complacency (and I kid about that Wallace-Gray article, something has to be written, after all. It's just frustrating to read knowing that KC Johnson still thinks Wallace is good), it's is only because they're not a good team. Especially so with these injuries.

It's kind of fun to listen to the Portland
guys try to make it sound like Portland needs to get up for this game - with Lu, Kirk and BG on the bench.

"They're going to have to get on Duhon in the early going, he'll have the green light to shoot - don't want to let him get started..."

Uh, get started doing what?  Letting him shoot is the usual game plan!

Maybe I'll take up hockey.

I wouldn't mind the Blazers snagging up Veektor again.  He's limited of course but a good hustle glue guy.  I don't get why the Bulls bought him out with lots of season left and so many injuries...

I don't believe for one second that he couldn't play tonight because of some mysterious disappearing/reappearing wrist ailment.

He played the last two games and, noe, suddenly, after a day off, he can't go?

Other than watching the Youth develop, this game is pointless. We can't win if we can't score.

I think that applies to one of the guys,
but not the other.

They panned over Kirk, BG and Lu sitting on the bench, and the one guy pointed out that's roughly 60 points out of the game tonight for the Bulls.

Then the other guy is like "Hey, it's not like the Blazers don't have guys out" - pointing to Greg Oden.  As if having 3 starters out is the equivalent to playing without a rookie who has never played.  I don't think that second guy is feeling at all sorry or respectful for the Bulls.

They are so wildly overrated. Roy is ludicrously over-valued. Some people compare him to Jordan? Please.

If the Bulls weren't a terrible joke, they would beat this Blazer squad.

by 1958ChiTown on Feb 6, 2008 10:44 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Who compares him to Jordan?
I, as a Blazer homer, haven't heard that one from anyone ever in the universe.

The only read the Blazers get so much attention is because no team this young has ever won more than 16 games.  They might not be a playoff team in the West, but they would be in the East.  Playoffs don't matter anyways when everyone is 23 and you got Oden and Rudy Fernandez coming...

I could sense a anti-Blazer sentiment growing amongst the Inter-Web because of how much attention they get.

And Roy is no Jordan, but Roy is awesome.

by Mortimer on Feb 6, 2008 10:47 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The Bulls announcers (on the Chicago feed)
just discussed how several members of the Portland media and/or organization compare Roy to Jordan. They didn't specify names. For all I know, it was a delusional statement by Red Kerr, who probably hears voices in the crackling wrappers of the candy he eats on air.

My comment was a response to that discussion.

Blazers, big time. I hated Jordan and the Bulls!
Not to quote Joakim or anything, but they broke my heart (as did Detroit a couple of times).

When my cat had 5 kittens, I named them Clyde, Jerome, Terry, Buck and Kevin.

I proudly wore my Blazers t-shirt around campus (in Utah) while the Blazers were beating the Jazz.

And I did, in fact, go to sleep every night staring at the poster of Clyde on my ceiling.  Man, that was an awesome poster.

But you move, you find new teams, and eventually Clyde goes to Houston and gets replaced by Kirk.  ;)

LMAO.
You must be getting your PhD, or maybe your second PhD.

I visited Portland last year. Very laid back vibe. Extremely. Like almost comatose. A completely different energy than Chicago. Nice people, though.

What are you doing with it?  I worked for a corporation for a few years (regulatory authorizations) - and it sucked the soul right out of me.  Then tried two years of briefing and discovery crap for a small trial firm.  Then said screw the 3-year/$50,000 investment.  Hopefully you found something at least slightly rewarding?

I don't know if the term "rewarding"
applies, but I have been very fortunate. I just made partner at a large Chicago firm. My success is attributable primarily to good timing and serendipity.

I am a litigator. The job can be grueling and monotonous at times, thrilling when cases go to trial. Most importantly, it allows me to buy Bulls' tickets. LOL. (Had to get back on topic before Matt bans me.)

du
Chris Duhon will be playing in Europe next season.  He shot 20% in the previous 3 games and 30% tonight.  From an offense perspective, he is the weakest PG I have seen.  I understand why he got so much burn tonight, but remember that it was not that long ago that BG was benched for Duhon.  Seems like a joke, right?
