Open Game Thread # 58: Bulls vs. Washington Wizards

[Thanks to wjb1492 for tonight's game preview. -Matt]

Yet another game originally slated for a national audience but now dropped in favor one between two good teams.  There's nothing quite like being barely relevant heading into March!

Tonight the Bulls, currently in 10th place and 2 1/2 games out of the final playoff spot in the East, have an opportunity to win back-to-back games for just the fourth time this season and the first time since late December.  I knew they had yet to string three wins together, but I hadn't quite realized (the bliss of intentional ignorance?) that the team hasn't had even a 2-game winning streak over the past two months.  The opponent - the reeling Washington Wizards, who have lost 10 of their 13 games this month, and more significantly just found out that Caron Butler is out for the foreseeable future, with a more serious hip injury than originally believed.  In comparison, the Bulls are 5 and 7 during February, so it's not like it's time to break out the champagne or anything.  I seriously don't have much to say about a playoff race where the team's greatest hope is that other teams suck just as bad or worse.

The big question tonight would seem to be who gets playing time, with Boylan saying he's going to take the "game-by-game", approach.  Of course, the associated question here on blogabull is which guard will perform well and which will experience the "hater" reaction for the next few days.  Nothing like a little contention among fans, right?  I'm sure Kirk, Ben and Larry haters are all waiting their chance to jump into the fray, while the corrensponding fans are hoping for a good game.  (Du-haters, fortunately (or is that unfortunately?), seem to have been permanently silenced of late by the string of DNPs.) [No Thabo haters out there? -Matt] It all should make for a warm-and-fuzzy end to this most charming of seasons, watching the who-to-keep-and-who-to-trade debate develop.  The "new toy on Christmas morning" shine on Larry and Drew hasn't worn off yet, so I can only imagine that the debate will grow even more intense if/when all those flaws Cav's fans complained about start to appear.

Accuscore predicts a Bulls win.  I predict that Boylan will make at least 4 line-up decisions that most people hate.  Oh, and I'll go with a win for the Bulls as well.  Hawks and Sixers play as well, so with a little help from New York (not likely) and Golden State (possibly), the Bulls could end the night tied for 9th and just a game and a half out of playoff contention.  And if that doesn't get you psyched for the game, then I don't know what will!  ;)

Nets won last night
They defeated the Bucks who were creeping up from behind us in the standings, but we still need the Nets to lose after all their trades.

Just win baby!

I think the Nets are making the playoffs
I think the trade made the Nets better.  More depth, talent, 2 new starters.  There offense was already pretty much sit around and watch Carter and Jefferson score.

The Wiz however, are hanging on by a thread.  They are 6th right now, but they are going to finish 9th or 10th.  The Bulls only have to be slightly better than awful to catch them.

It will be
interesting to see how long this honeymoon phase lasts with the two newbies. Shouldn't take long.

A win at home would be nice. The game is on CSN tonight for those who get that station.

Kirk Hinrump is dead to me. :-)

Interest Level = Wins - Losses + 2*Tyrus Time + 1.5*(Thabo + Noah Time) - .4*Bricked layups + 3*Red Kerr Candies

appeared to have ended last Monday in Dallas when they stunk and lost their second in a row....
Kirk's getting tossed didn't help matters either....

I can't wait to see Larry Hughes
call his own isolations, then jack up leaners all night! It really is neat to see Eastern Conference trademarked inefficient halfcourt guard play finally in Chicago.

Washington
seems like a team that could fall out.  Remember what happened last year during their no Butler/ no Arenas stage.

If Washington bombs and we outplay the Hawks, its Bulls time.

Seem to recall Tyrus and Aaron Gray got rare opportunities to shine last time vs NBAs Ugliest Unis. Here's hoping lightning can strike twice.....          :=)

Any word yet on the starting lineup?
I am apprehensively awaiting the "Drew is gonna start instead of Tyrus" BS from Boylan, at which point I will turn my attention on a more focused basis to the I Hate Jim Boylan campaign that is getting such a groundswell of support on this site.  Don't do it you bastard!

I like Gray
For this matchup, Gooden is much better on offense posting up against a Power Forward where he isnt mismatched size-wise and I'd rather have him posting up than driving by Haywood or shooting jumpers pulling him out a bit.

But more importantly than that, haywood was beasting us and Gray is now BEASTING him. Which is good, Gray is doing some GREAT things for us. Keep him in there and have Noah rotate in for him, with Tyrus rotating in for Deng and Gooden with Nocioni.

This is good stuff..... plus Hughes, Gordon, Kirk and Thabo doing very well in the backcourt... The bulls are playing very good right now, and i love them after this trade.

NICE!

Thats true

But he's a rookie, he is huge, this is his first 82 game season after 30 game college years, and he hasnt played much minutes all year (especially not on a consistent basis).

BUT, although he is winded now he already made a huge impact and helped us alot. The big fella being winded should be somewhat expected.

One other thning
with Gray.

Haywood was getting our bigs into foul trouble, he was a mismatch for us and he was really kind of hurting us.

Gray has really neutralized that and its helping take advantage of our strengths in Gooden, Tyrus and Noah. Very nice, good job Gray.

This trade made us
a much more exciting team.  One thing that wasn't mentioned was how we upgraded our athleticism both in our guard corps and front line.  They're just fast, quicker, longer and more explosive than they were with Smith, BW, Duhon and Griffin.  Not great, of course - but much more exciting!

LOVING THE SMILES!!!!!!
Deng giving Gooden a high five, Gordon and Hinrich sharing a laugh, Noah with his arm up on Hughes talking.......

MAN OH MAN!!!!!

IM lOVING THE ATtITUDE FROM THE BENCH, LOOKInG LIKE HOW A WINNING TEAMS BENCH LOOKS. LIKE HOW THE CELTICS BENCH LOOKs, INTO THE GAME, ACTIVE, ROUTING ON THEIR TEAMMATES.

Very nice, our game is so much more versatile now. An option in the post, a good pick/roll option, a slasher, more inside play opening up for our great perimeter talent (and midrange talent: deng), getting to the foul line much more (HUGE), having no more size mismatches on defense.......

EVERYTHING!

Never thought I'd say it
but Boylan's done an excellent job with these substitutions.  He's using Nocioni in moderation, and taking Noah out there was smart - don't want him to pick up the third foul.  Also LOVE how the injury to Thabo hasn't brough Duhon back into the fold, which I thought was coming.  Also like that he benched Kirk - shows that top effort is expected of everyone.

Maybe he's learning on the job.  We'll see.

I think the nets are better
Like the guy said, much better now after that trade (Especially if Krstic gets to 100% health and regains form he had before the injury as their primary scoring bigman at 17 ppg)

But yeah....... I think the Bulls and Hawks are also much better after their trades making a playoff run.

Taking into account the vastly small sample size, here are the PERs for Hughes,Gooden,Wallace, and Smith before/after the trades:

        Before/After
Hughes  11.9  /22.2
Gooden  12.7  /16.3

Wallace 12.0  /12.8
Smith   22.9  /23.0

Even though all have increased their value, Hughes and Gooden have stepped it up quite a bit since coming to the Bulls.

by Freethefro on Feb 29, 2008 9:24 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

No, he is a
Power Forward. Not a Center.

And Boylan has him out there as center with a lineup of 2 pg-sized guards, a 2guard, and a swingman around him.....

And this is going against a frontline of two 7 footers at all times and a 20/10 power forward (allstar) playing the Small forward.

So yeah, I'd say boylan screwed that up BAD. Same thing with even Noah being the only big in. Screwed up bad.

There is a reason we blew the game open when Gray was in with another big and there is a reason why we got killed with that small-ball BS against a monster-sized frontline.

Gray was +15 in 8 minutes. Seriously....... at least put Noah and Gooden in there, not just one of them with 3 guards plus Deng or Noc.

The more I watch Luol Deng....
...the more this love affair us Chicagoans have with him bothers me.  Deng is no more than a decent player and I fear this is as good as it "consistently" gets for him.  When the games really truly matter he is nowhere to be found.  I can name 15 small forwards in the NBA that I'd rather have than him.  I will LOSE MY MIND if we pay this guy 12 million dollars a year.  He is decent but he is and never will be a superstar.  In short, he is pretty much overrated.  The one thing there is in the game of basketball is an excess of 6'8" athletes who can learn to play the game.  I'd sign and trade Deng this offseason and make the best deal I could make.  In the meantime, I'd put Thabo at the "3" and draft another 6'7" or 6'8" athlete and plug him in.

Tragic turn of events
on that loose ball. Then BG missed his three and failed to foul the rebounder who was right in front of him. It's a small point, and probably wouldn't make a diff, but it struck me as dumb nonetheless, because it cost 7 secs they couldn't spare.

Too much Larry Hughes and Gooden?
Seriously, i like the trade, i like the guys we got...but CMON!!!! Gooden was messing up alot, maybe he was having a bad day, maybe tyrus shouldve gotten some more burn, hell the energy couldve helped the team. And Hughes, WHERE THE HELL IS THAT SLASHING GAME YOU LIKE PLAYING!!! In the third when the game was going down the stinkhole it was hinrich for gordon, gordon for hinrich, yet hughes remained no matter what. Uh what a joke, so much potential just sitting on the bench, and boylan decides to go with his master plan. Damn!

I think
Alot of it had to do with him playing Center against a lineup of two 7footers while we had no big out there to help him.

Hence the foul trouble, and hence why the only great stretch he had in the game was when he was out there with Noah and then Gray.

Those of who think too much Hughes and Gooden....
... are completely delusional.  Look around the league.  Everybody has athletes that play basketball except us.  Hughes and Gooden are quite possibly now the two or the three best athletes and basketball players on our team (the exception being Tyrus Thomas in the athleticism department and arguably Gordon or Deng in the basketball player department...I would argue Gordon).  We need a real point guard.  We also need more horses so that we can have guys finishing at the rim, not pulling up for jump shots on the break.  Nothing bothers me more than having to watch Deng shoot that pull up jumper and then turning to Atlanta game and watching Josh Smith finish with such aggression.  I would be willing to bet that Deng is LAST in the league for starting small forwards in Free Throw Attemps/Game.  At that position, we need this guy to give us more.  I know he had 18 and 11 tonight but it was the quietest, most useless 18 and 11 EVER.  Where was he down the stretch when we needed big plays?  Hell, where is he most of the time when we need big plays?  Why do you think Gordon is always left to take the last shot and dribbles around like a chicken with his head cut off?  Deng is not even an option down the stretch and you don't pay 12 million to a guy like that.  He simply is not tough enough and he is a reflection of our team!!!  We simply are not tough enough!!!

Shots in the paint tonight
Deng: 6/7
Hughes: 3/7
Gordon: 0/0

Shots from outside:
Deng: 3/7
Hughes: 2/9
Gordon: 2/9

Who's finishing more inside?  Who is coming off a leg injury that would presumably take away explosiveness?

WE ARE DEFINITELY NOT TOuGH ENOUGH.

Deng could help TREMENDOUSLY with that problem if he would step up as our leader Brandon Roy style, like many of us thought he would after he was the best player on our young 50 win team last season.

wHAT THE HELl HAPPENED TO MY BULLS?!??

STEP UP AND BE A LEADER LUOL!!! And if Deng doesnt, someone else has to......... also, Gooden wouldve had about 7 or 8 easy baskets inside if any of our guards knew how to feed a big man for an open layup off of pick/roll or just in general.

It's not the toughness,
it's the small ball.

As for the leadership, maybe it's overrated, unless you're challenging at the level of a Dallas. BG, Kirk, Deng and Noc have all shown they can come up big on court. But Noah, Thabo and Tyrus have all shown more to me in terms of potential leadership-type personality. Rarely are any one of them on the court at the end.

by marionette on Feb 29, 2008 11:20 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

this start of the second half thing
is really annoying.  I think guys are looking over their shoulders now in a bad way.  If you're going to bench Kirk fine, but don't bring him back and pull out BG after four minutes because now you are messing with BG's head, too (even more than he already did by making him the sixth man...)  Hughes and Deng had just as many TO's in the third as anybody else, why not pull them too.  And Deng played 44 minutes for some reason.  He didn't play badly, but was he dominating in any way that would force Boylan to keep him out there that long?  And TT for 8 minutes?  WTF is Boylan really thinking?
Baby Bulls II?

WTF is Boylan really thinking?
The million dollar question.

I wish someone would ask him one of these days.  I'm dying to know the answer.

"Jim, just WTF was it that you were thinking there in the second half.  You went with a shitty three guard line-up featuring Duhon at one point.   Shouldn't you be over that by now?"

"Jim, your team played a great first half, yet you chose to finish the half with a line-up featuring Nocioni at center.  WTF is it exactly that you were thinking?"

Is this guy worse than Tim Floyd?   I am really starting to wonder.   While the Floyd era depressed me as a fan to no end, I never was enraged by him.   Boylan's horrible rotations and game management actually anger me.

Fuck this guy, and if he's still around next year, then fuck me if I keep following this team.

Just terrible Boylan
RIDICULOUS.

Gooden is Power Forward.

If it were just a case of letting Boylan screw up,
and the team not making the playoffs thus guaranteeing a new coach next year, I'd suck it up and deal with the losing.  I just really don't want him to screw up the guys and their chemistry any more than it already is, or screw any more with the confidence/desire/whatever of the kids.  Yes, Thabo's out with the injury, but how many minutes would he have actually gotten anyway?  And 9 for Ty?  Meanwhile, as has been noted, the guys just coming back from injury plays 44 minutes.

I'm not sure all of that is worth it even for a win, much as I love the Ws - but all of that and another loss really sucks.  And watching Boylan sit there and rub his temples like he has no clue what to do gives me a headache of my own.

Still, I agree with you that the thought of no Boylan next year is the silver lining to this truly hideous loss.

He really is
putting the players in a horrible spot by playing them out of their natural positions, random benching, over playing, under playing, mind games, Duhon...all you have to do is watch the game to see what is working and what isn't and he constantly goes to what is clearly not working or like tonight completely ignoring what was actually working in that first half.  It is maddening.

I think the players can recover with a new coach.  We got the talent.  The talent isn't being used well.  Every now and then you get a win in spite of that, but in the long run is gets you down.  If they got a guy they can trust who doesn't follow the church of the crazy substitutions things can get better.  And it will be a lot more fun to watch as well.  We won't have to resort to hating players just because Boylan insists that a PF can be the tallest guy out there against two legit 7ft centers.  It isn't the player's fault, it is Boylan's. You can make that case for most of the other positions tonight as well.  You have to have some finesse as a coach and Boylan seems to have sausage fingers.

At the end of the day
Its only one loss to a playoff team.

But god damn if you watched that game you know its ALOT more than that. The 1st half had me so excited. For real, we played so great. So enthusiastic, beating them down like we should when theyre without thier 2 best players and we have all this talent on a very well-rounded team.

Everything was looking good. For real.

The wheels fell off in the 3rd quarter, and Boylan contributed with his stupid small-ball lineups more than anything.......

Damn.

IM PRAYING TO GOD THAT we gET IT TOGETHER AND BEAT CLEVELAND ON SuNDAY. AND THEN GO ON A WARRIOR-LIKE TEAR (Golden State was 25-36 last season before going on a tear to finish 42-40, the tear started about 10 games after trading for Al Harrington and Stephen Jackson).......

Please god let it happen. Atlanta and New Jersey i have a feeling arent going to be easy to pass to get a playoff spot, both made trades of their own and are alot better after making them.

I just want a coach that isn't afraid to lose
with young players. I hate seeing these un-athletic "cagey" veterans who suck get all the playing time simply because they are veterans.

Does every team throw out a "small lineup" whenever their team is struggling to score? So basically, when you are struggling to make jumpshoots, you bring in a lineup that has trouble defending bigger players and grabbing rebounds (especially offensive rebounds) and start jump chucking. Yeah, that's working great.

I don't care how old Hubie Brown is, he is waaay better then Boylan or any other coach currently available. Pax needs to get this guy on the phone.

I'd just hang out around the basket and pretend every shot is an alley-oop from the rest of the Bulls ... just remember though, you have a total of 9 freakin minutes of playing time cuz you know Boylan won't draw a single play for you ... sigh.

by T2fan on Mar 1, 2008 4:34 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Surprised.
It would normally sound like, "So you have a pick and its real high in the draft and you wonder, who should I take, I need a big man to do some damage, so is it Aldridge or Tyrus.  Now you see, Aldridge can give you the 16 points and the 8 rebounds a game, while Tyrus, you see is a bit rough on his edges.  Now personally, I would have jumped right onto LaMarcus, but now the Bulls have Thomas and wonder 'do I have my future star,' which they definitely do not, if I am right.

by Kemp on Mar 1, 2008 1:27 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I hope Boylan is doing this on purpose
Maybe he's just trying to make Skiles look good.  He probably knows he won't be back with the Bulls next year, so his best chance to get an NBA job is if Skiles gets a head coaching job and hires Boylan as an assistant.  I hope that's the case, because it's hard to imagine someone could actually be this stupid.  Someone mentioned Tim Floyd above, but his teams had so little talent that it's hard to blame him for losing.  This team has talent - and they definitely have more talent than a team playing Darius Songaila, Roger Mason, and some guy named Dominic McGuire.

by Big D on Feb 29, 2008 10:51 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Well, it sure would be nice if Boylan didn't
ape the small ball failures of Skiles. And trusted the youth a bit, considering they're actually our best players.

If he's trying  things to learn, I hope he learned that playing Larry Hughes big minutes at the 3 (because Thabo's unavailable?), and Gooden at the 5, is retarded.

I think he also had Noc at center to end the half for a minute. That's when the game turned, in retrospect: they got the 24 sec violation and the buzzer went off, but the clock didn't stop even though Deng did, with Boylan yelling, "Go. Go!" no less. Then the half time energy/effort transfer....

I don't know where to begin here
http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/basketball/bulls/cs-080229-chicago-bulls-washington-w izards,1,7129642.story
The timeout needed no grease board to scribble strategy, no X-and-O instruction whatsoever.

Given that he strode to halfcourt to call it, Jim Boylan could have used smoke signals to communicate his displeasure, such was the amount of steam exiting his ears.

Trying to staunch a disastrous third-quarter performance, Boylan first upbraided each Bull as he strode to the bench. He then entered the timeout huddle briefly to challenge his players' effort before storming away and standing with his arms folded.

His players finished the timeout in silence, and later a description-defying 97-91 loss to a team without the injured Gilbert Arenas and Caron Butler and an ejected DeShawn Stevenson for the second half.

So he called a timeout, yelled at his team to play harder, and then stormed off?  No wonder the Bulls looked so confused on the court - Boylan didn't bother to draw up a play for them!  Seriously, though, how obvious is it that he's lost this team?

"We absolutely got what we deserved," an emotional and irate Boylan said. "We played one half and thought that was enough. A couple of weeks ago, we were out in Golden State with a team that was depleted and beat them. I guess we didn't learn a lesson from that.

"You have to play 48 minutes every night. We embarrassed the organization and the city of Chicago. I apologize for that."

Now if only he would apologize for playing Tyrus Thomas 9 freakin' minutes, maybe we'd be getting somewhere.  You got what you deserved too, Jimmy.

And here's my favorite part . . .

In the fourth, the Bulls were assessed a technical foul for their second delay of game when Chris Duhon didn't have his shirt tucked in as he entered for his first action in four games.

I was wondering what that delay of game call was for.  In fairness, Duhon probably started drinking an hour before the game, so it's hard to blame him.  I have no idea why you not play a guy for three straight games, and then put him on the court in the 4th quarter of a close game.  That's probably only about the 20th dumbest thing Boylan did tonight , though, so I won't complain that much about it.

Yeah, I somehow doubt Du thought he'd see
the court tonight, given the recent string of DNPs.  I know I was surprised to see him out there.

And this is a big change in Boylan - starting with benching Kirk and the way he spoke about it afterwards.  No more Mr. Nice Guy, apparently - Pax got rid of the trouble maker for him, and he's still got a losing team.

And man I wish/hope that someone pointed out to him who was on the floor for that GS win!

I was at the game tonight. In the 4th quarter, Nocioni was playing his heart out and making great plays, and we came back to tie with 3 minutes left. So what did Boylan do? HE PULLED NOC!

I don't care what you think of Noc, when any one player is providing such a spark at the end of a tight game, you have to keep him in! He goes to the bench, and next thing you know we're down six.

Can't take it
Duhon's insta-technical capsulized the game:  a player who should not be playing going out to join a clownish lineup who instantly hurts the team.  That was the play of the game as far as I'm concerned.

Boylan is definitely Skiles' son as each plays the worst lineups known to man.  His benching of Tyrus boggles my mind.  Along those lines, the Chicago beat writers should each be punched in the face for not asking Boylan why he sat him down.

On a positive note, I was concerned that I was going to have to stop updating http://www.BenchDuhon.com so I thank Boylan for giving me new life.

Agree - last night was a heart-breaking loss
It really hit home to me how poor a basketball team we are, despite have good players.  Washington took their second and third string players and made us look like chumps in the second half.  We had no ability to make stops or have the desire to regroup and win that game despite the Washington run.  It speaks volumes about the coaching staff and the character/mental strength of this team.
