Open Game Thread #57: Bulls at Indiana Pacers

[Thanks to chgobr for today's game preview. -Matt]

Tonight is another opportunity to digest the trade and the solve the Bulls puzzle. Can we find a combination that dazzled us against Denver? Can we better understand what is missing? Are all the pieces already here and nothing is missing? There is a great deal to like about this group of players. Our challenge is meshing, chemistry, synergy, finding a way for the sum to be greater than its parts and avoid redundancy (like I just did).

Tonight's game is between two struggling teams. The Bulls have lost 5 of 7 and the Pacers 12 of 15. Kirk Hinrich's 38 points led the Bulls to a 108-95 home victory Jan. 23. Kirk is salivating as he looks forward to facing Travis Diener again. Indiana, 22-35, a tad worse then our 22-34, have pieces (O'Neal, Murphy, Dunleavy, Tinsley, Foster, Marquis Daniels, Granger and Kareem Rush) and like us, are trying to solve the puzzle. Speculation about O'Neal and Tinsley's knees and their return abound. If you could guarantee O'Neal's health he would be in the mix for Bulls savior. O'Neal's knees and $19.7, $21.3, and $23 through 2009-10 make him almost impossible to move. Against Toronto Monday the Pacers came from 10 down and Kareem Rush almost tied it with a three. Expect the Pacers to play with energy as they did against Toronto.

" We really competed our hearts out in the second half," Pacers coach Jim O'Brien said. "We played a good basketball team, never gave up ....."

Bulls - Pacers: opportunity to examine pieces and solve our puzzle.

Kirk better be going for 46 tonight...
Minutes that is, as opposed to the 6 or so minutes he played at dallas. Skills aside, he really has to not talk to referees. They dont like him, they dont give him calls, and they dont give him respect. So he should stop trying to play to the refs, and i say this as a fan of his. Hopefully he shows some of  20 and 10 game that i believe he can have, and shows that top 10 guard stuff everyone sort'of kind'of thinks he has.

I am glad he came out strong
because if he looked like he went out drinking with his KU buds last night, I was ready to dumptruck the guy.

I hope
Kirk has another game like the last time they played the Pacers and I hope he keeps his mouth shut and just plays ball.

Break this losing streak guys.

Kirk Hinrump is dead to me. :-)

I'm stuck with tape delay tonight
But I'll be wishing I were watching live the whole time.  Time to start a winning streak!
Maybe I'll take up hockey.

Don't know which is worse
I officially went HD yesterday and was drooling over the beauty of the Lakers game on my big 65" and excitedly anticipating tonight's game on ConCast HD -

But, NOOOOooooo...
I gotta watch it via Indiana's feed which is not HD, and the comms sucketh....

Sigh....

Tyrus
That jump shot actually looks deadly now.

People will soon respect it and then he really shines

Tyrus totally solid all around tonight
Great rebounding, great shooting, sweet pass to Deng cutting to basket.

Love the opposing (IND)
announcing crew: "Let him shoot that."  And swish goes the TT 20 footer.  Or: "He can't really handle", right before setting the table on Deng's dunk.

Last night's POR game the Laker guy sez: " How much do the fans in Chicago regret the trade of LaMarcus now?" Answer: Not at all, dipstick!

A reason to fret
What does it say to Tyrus when he's put up one of his best 5 minute stretches of his career only to be the first one yanked out?

That's why it's bullshit.

Gooden can have some minutes. I ain't mad at that.

Boylan can suck it

Ok let's all take notice
Around the 4:15 mark in the 1st, Boylan takes Tyrus out of the game.

He had 4 points, 5 boards and a nice assist to Deng.

Looks more active than anyone on the court!

HE ALSO ONLY HAS ONE FOUL.

I ask why?

by tyger1147 on Feb 27, 2008 7:04 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Boylan is the main reason this game is close
Tyrus being yanked out early was his first mistake.

Taking the whole line up out with about 3 minutes left in the 1st was his second mistake.

Keeping Gray in for so long is his 3rd mistake

Noah just watching from the bench still is his 4th mistake (Noah could have a big game against a team like Indiana)

And yanking Tyrus out again with about 10 to go in the second was his 5th mistake (all due to that infamous 2nd foul in the first half).

Boylan makes me sick

Hughes over dribbles? I mean, i get he may be trying to slash or whatever, but still, it looks wierd, i have this fear that hes looking more at his shots rather than whats the best decision on the floor. Or at least thats what i see...

You know, I'm a huge Bulls fan,
and I'll probably like this team no matter who they trot out there.  But that half, they played flat and stupid.

Nevertheless, go Bulls.

by Freethefro on Feb 27, 2008 7:19 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

that was a bad half.
And yet again (as I mentioned above), Boylan confuses 'go small' with 'go short', where he sits Noah and puts Gooden at center, even though Noah is far better suited to chase around an opposing smaller lineup.

That and the Tyrus yank was bogus. (10 minutes this half??)

But overall nobody's really playing well so hard to completely call out Boylan the boob.

for the world famous Duhon/PeeOn/Brown/Nichols/Simmons line-up

by paxson43 on Feb 27, 2008 7:31 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I couldn't disagree more.
They weren't going to pull away after putting (refs putting?) IND in the bonus w/ 8:00 left. When Travis Diener can parade to the line, it's easy to score points.

PHX vs NO locally here, but I'll be watching this one, so I'll measure my "huge fan" next to anyone's. I saw as much (or more) brilliance and liveliness as flatness and stupidity.

It's easier if you simply watch the game. Put little credence in the negatives here.

"Tyrus, you gotta stay outta foul trouble. I don't care how good you look out there! Aaron, keeping being a big body out there and taking up space and time. Drew, we're counting on you to show Joakim and Tyrus how to bring it every night and Ben . . . just keep soing whatever you wanna do out there"

Who cares if he fouls out a game!
Why are the Bulls so afraid of him fouling out? They rarely play him in the closing minutes anyways. They've been over-coddling of Tyrus since game one of the season.

Why do the Bulls
get so many fouls called on them? I know they do make some of them but this is ridiculous. And the ref at the far end of the court makes the out of bounds call at the other end of the court? I hope they come out and keep their hands to themselves so there is no doubt they didn't foul.
Kirk Hinrump is dead to me. :-)

by sue369 on Feb 27, 2008 7:26 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I don't understand it myself
they seem to get such ticky-tack calls.  Nocioni, especially, has gotten to the point where any call that's even FAINTLY ambiguous goes against him.  He's getting jobbed fairly frequently now, and though I'm not a big Noc guy, it's clear that he's getting poor treatment due to his prior and egregious floppery.  I'm not sure if this is true, but I have the feeling that we're viewed by refs as a pretty "whiny" team.  What do you all think?

by Bluelou on Feb 27, 2008 7:45 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Does that make the Pistons
a "very" whiny team then?

I don't see us as terribly whiny.  We just have twice as many things to be upset about than most teams who don't get handled by the refs as we do.  What I don't get is why are the Pacers so great that they get handled with kiddy gloves by the refs?  I'd expect the Bulls to get short handed on fouls against a good team, but the Pacers?

by cranscape on Feb 27, 2008 9:26 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I very rarely see Kirk, Noc, Noah
speak cogently and respectfully to a ref.  It's always hands up in the air, demonstrative yells, strutting away.  Other teams, I see veterans stop and have actual discussions with refs - as in, how did you see it, this is what my guy's doing that's illegal so watch for it - and I think that's just a much more effective way of communicating.  We don't get calls, you're right - Thabo gets some serious crap thrown his way! - but I have a feeling we've brought some of it on ourselves.

I fucking hate this team.
I think it's safe to say that they are getting close to the "hurting the youth" area. Taking out Tyrus when he's kicking ass? Fuck that fucking ass bull shit. Paxson needs to take his head out of his before he shoots himself in the foot (how bout them cliches?). I'm done with this team until Thomas and Noah are getting 30 mpg. And that won't happen the rest of this year. See ya guys at the draft!

"Proof" Boylan is dumb.
You pull guys with fouls because they're your best players and you want to save them. Boylan, however, clearly does not think that about Thomas and Noah. So why save them?

Of course, his logic might be, "Well, if they're fouling, then they obviously aren't playing that well." Because, of course, that's the best indicator of playing prowess.

Thats the one downside
To the Hughes/Gordon backcourt (Which I really happen to like for the most part). They miss alot of  passes that would be easy scores.

If we had a true PG in there instead of either one of them then our guys would get alot more easy open baskets, especially Deng, Gooden, Tyrus, Noah, and Nocioni, and our pick/roll would be much more effective as well.

I don't mind the Gooden/Noah frontcourt.  I don't like the idea of Tyrus moving to the bench/regressing, but that frontcourt is far better - and more exciting - than the Wallace/Smith wreckage we trotted out for a year.

by Freethefro on Feb 27, 2008 8:48 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

It is much, much better
but, to me, the fact remains that Tyrus is still far and away the biggest talent we have in the frontcourt.

With that in mind, I don't mind Gooden getting his minutes, but not at the detriment of Tyrus' minutes.

I also think the Gooden/Tyrus lineup is a good one, but it seems like Boylan is trying to phase that out and make it an either/or situation.

Alright im Complaining
Gordon played awesome, and hughes played great (gah one game means nothing, and theres a city of people and stats galore that say hes not a great shooter at all) but end of the game, and still no hinrich?!?! Seriously what the hell did he do wrong, cuz he obviously did something wrong to not play the entire game after his start in the second half. I mean did he mouth off to boylan or something or what happened?

All this ben gordon trade talk, in this game it seemed like hinrichs the one who getting ready to be traded.

Also, ben gordon DID play point pretty well tonight, i dont know if it will work every night, but yes tonight he did a great job. Hughes, well i already addressed him above. Tyrus was great tonight, and though gooden did play well, i thought thomas truly earned minutes of play...I mean we were fouling anyway, might as well put gooden and thomas together and see what comes of it, they both were playing decent.

Joakim noah couldve had 15 boards if he had played as much as gooden. I also miss skiles, sure he pulled people for stupid things, but there was  a sort of logic behind it that after awhile you knew why he did what he did. Uh, someone find out what hinrich did to not play ANY minutes....

at Hinrich.  He said he didn't like the first few possessions of the third quarter and made him sit "next to me".  He was pissed when he said that.  That was interesting.

Good for Boylan!
I've got nothing against Kirk, but we seem oddly married to this unathletic, streaky-shooting combo guard with limited court vision and creativity.  Where does it say Hinrich must start?  Is the Skiles-Kirk bloodpact still in effect?

Didn't
he throw a couple lobs to Tyrus tonight as well as make some threes in the short time he was out there?   Looked to me like he was doing fine on our offense.  He was being burned defensively and that was likely why he got sat down.

I missed those positions
Were they truly that bad? Worse then ben gordon dribbling the shot clock away? Worse then Hughes over dribbling and running into guys (commiting fouls at the same time)? Worse than thabo traveling as soon as he gets the ball? What possibly could he have done that was so bad?
im trying hard to become the next kirk hinrich, therefore im doing nothing more than being the next chris duhon.

Whatever is going on he clearly
is angry at Kirk.  He made it clear that if you play lousy you will be pulled and sit next to me.  I have a feeling there is more to this than we know.

This is what beat writers are for
And yet i have a feeling no one will actually get to the bottom of this. I get tired of hearing "experts" spit out the same theories i have heard from fans, shouldnt they get to the bottom of whats going on, i seriously want to know what the hell kirk did...and it better have been really bad...

Chicago reporters really are weak
I cannot believe Kirk did something so bad during the game to trigger such an intense reaction by Boylan.  This is the first time I've seen him really upset.  This has got to be building up over time.

So I guess he's past that phase where he was
wanting the guys to play loose and not worry so much about mistakes?  He's certainly got enough guards to do that now.

Maybe this is still related to Monday's game.

Maybe I'll take up hockey.

Convenient
that the rule starts right after Wallace leaves.

the thing about it
Kirk was only in for two defensive possessions, and it wasn't like Diener was suddenly shut down, either.  I wonder if going out on the town in Dallas has something to do with it.  The should have played at least this well against Dallas.

they all go out
where do you think 'flu-like symptoms' comes from?

I don't think that's the problem. Although, Kirk isn't quite good enough to do it excessively. Yet another teflon duhon phenomenon :)

Boylan said he
told the players to bring their "A" game or they would be sitting on the bench next to him and Kirk didn't bring his "A" game and he got benched. Hope he learned from this.
Kirk Hinrump is dead to me. :-)

Impressive
I honestly have no idea where Gooden's 8 offensive boards came from.  I don't think anything external motivates him.

And I'm a Larry Hughes fan, so good for him, but remember: all roads lead to 40%.

See you Sunday.

Far to much Boylan Hate
going on! Ease up!  Boylan might be a very special coach one day in the NBA...

Hes not that bad of a coach but hes
inconsistent with his rotations.(which i guess kinda  makes him a bad coach)

just maybe
If tonight's game is an indication that this group of Bulls might just be a solid set of complimentary players ...

http://www.nba.com/games/20080227/CHIIND/boxscore.html

then, maybe Chicago will, indeed, be able to accomplish the goals I see them reaching during the Eastern Conference Playoffs this spring.

There is now an abundance of young athletic basketball talent on this team, looking forward from this point.

Gooden and Hughes
Lookin pretty good, quite the upgrade. They both did a great job tonight, GREAT trade for us for the future and VERy good trade for us for this year. Both did a great job!

A guy that can create his own shots and make plays for teammates with his passing, gets to the foul line, good slasher, big guard, very good defender, good scorer

And a guy that can score inside, has to be guarded, you can post him up (First real post option we have had in 5 years), very good rebounder on both ends, and a very good option to run pick and roll with, athletic true power forward, solid passer from inside and he can get to the line himself..... unlike Big Ben, you have to guard him inside and he's a true post-up and pick/roll option that can score in all those ways. That opens up alot for our other talent, especially when compared to Big Ben.

Those were two big needs for us. That's a helluva acquisition both in their 20's in return for our two oldest players that had no longterm plans with us, we got much better for the future with that move and alot better for the rest of this year as well. VERY NICE TO SEE!

I LOVED TONIGHTS ROTATION! TY nOAH AND THABO GOT THEIR MINUTES TO DEvELOP AND WE STIll PLAYED ALL our BEST PLAYERS LotS OF MINuteS AND HAD THEM OuT THERE TO CLOSE Out THE GAME! THAT IS EXACTLY HOW IT SHOUld BE THIS YEAR (PLUS KIRK)! ALWAYS! GREAT JOB BOYLAN!

Also, my boy Deng
Deng looked very good tonight too, he did a great job. Lookin like my boy from last season, the bulls been looking very good in the last 3 games. Cant wait to see it continue, we have a hell of a 9 man rotation with Hinrich, Deng, Gordon, Tyrus, Gooden, Thabo, Nocioni, Hughes and Noah. Good stuff, very deep, everyone should have a role, great bench, everyone ican score and can defend...... VERY NICE!!! Now lets beat out NJ, Atlanta, and Philly and get this 7 seed..... or better yet lets get the 6 seed if Caron Butler and Gilbert Arenas dont get back for Washington soon!!!! AWESOME STUFF! GO BULLS, IM VERY OPTIMISTIC!!!!!
