2008 Trade Deadline(2pm CST) thread
::crickets::
Chris Duhon's expiring salary also could attract last-minute interest.
oh.
One thing's for certain: whether or not starting last night's overtime with Duhon/Gordon/Hinrich/Smith/Wallace, and following with Duhon/Gordon/Hinrich/Nocioni/Wallace(!) was a case of 'showcasing' or not (it wasn't), that rationalization is out the window from now on.

What I hope for post-deadline
By the way, Windhorst is hinting that big things are about to go down in Cleveland. (h/t: FanHouse)
Couple things
PSS Did anyone see Pau Gasol last night or that guy Kobe Bryant. Man to think we MIGHT/COULDVE/SHOULDVE/WOULDVE have had either of those guys on our team.
Where are those mean boys
Can we revive the Nocioni for Williams talk? I know it would scramble our guard picture even more than it already is, but it's only scrambled because nobody's good enough to absolutely stand out from the crowd. Last night's game showed that even a near-rookie-but-gifted ball handler/passer can dominate the offensive game flow.

KD had a great mini-rant about Noc
by Mike C on Feb 21, 2008 10:31 AM CST up reply actions
Every game I watch I get more convinced that Noc
The dude's an undersized four. Or rather, he's an undersized four defensively, and an underskilled three offensively. I think he could be a valueable player off the bench, as long as we have a coach with the mind to utilize him effectively. The combination of Boylan and injuries have not served him well.

if we could trade Noc for Marcus Williams
by Freethefro on Feb 21, 2008 10:18 AM CST up reply actions
I'm tired of all the Noc hate
Nocioni's a solid player and one of the few who constantly tries to do something on this lackluster team. That says enough for me. Save Chapu!
If the rest of this team wasn't so inept, we would likely value Noc more....
I would be pissed if we got rid of Nocioni for another hack player who doesn't know how to play under pressure.....Noc is the only Bull who has any fire to him at all, the rest of the guys (Even Gordon) go through moments of complete ineptness.
Noc has his bad shooting nights, and the occasional dumb turnover or bad defensive set, but he more than makes up for it.
The Noc hate here is ridiculous. He's not a star, but then again he's hardly paid as a star. He's a solid 6th man and paid as such (maybe marginally too high, but not materially too high). He's still a starter on plenty of ball clubs too, but is effect in bursts off the bench.
I mean the guy avg's almost 22 pts in 40 minutes. He's been in a bit of a shooting slump, but he'll get over it, and has played better than avg more than he's had bad games.
base year bad luck
My only issue with Noc's contract is the length. I like a max of 4 years for bench player contracts. Beyond that and you're getting yourself into trouble.
by NBA Observer on Feb 21, 2008 12:41 PM CST up reply actions
I agree
Noc's contract is bad in the length and it's also bad because of our almost inconceivable struggles this year (making Noc, someone who could have been a trading chip when we were bad, into an untradable asset this year when we needed to make a big trade since he's got the BYC)....If this team performed like or close to expectations (basically if we were a shade over .500, most would be happy with Noc, that's all I'm saying....
He just stands out because he would be tradable, but isn't due to timing.
Thankfully we made a splash yesterday, I love hearing all the talk that Big Ben's going to be a difference maker and now puts Cleveland in the mix for the ECF......Gooden's been better than Ben this year, and while Hughes is a bad contract, who knows he could be good again in a different offensive set playing without a similarly styled (though far more skilled) James....
I like the trade for the Bulls.....it at least starts pointing us to the future. Having 2 more years of Ben's declining skills and even less motivation, would really have put us in the cellar.
I'd love for four players to be traded...

The most exciting read so far has been . . .
I'd take
I think Joe is a better player than Jason--because all Jason can do is shoot, but he's a lights out shooter).
I would make this trade though just because it would be interesting for the Bulls to actually have 2 real shooters on the team, 2 offensive minded wings for once in Kapono and Gordon.
Jason would come off the bench, and free up time for Tyrus.
I agree with everyone's post that that OT was hard to watch yesterday. The refs didn't help matters with their one sided ticky-tackness, but at the same time the Bulls looked worse than even their record would indicate.....
Kapono is a defensive liability
I think we can do better than Kapono.

Wallace Trade
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/ian_thomsen/02/21/deadline.notes/index.html?eref=T1
I think I'd actually do this trade to get out from underneath his contract, and to get Noah/Thomas/Gray more PT. I don't know if the Magic would be willing to take the hit financially, but it seems like they're serious about making a run and want some help for Howard (Bosh did torch them for 40 last night and Van Gundy ripped Howard in the press again). I'd even take the 1st rounder out if the Magic balked.
Bulls:
Magic 2008 1st Rounder
Garrity
Foyle
Dooling
Arroyo
Augustine
Magic:
Wallace

Wonder bout what?
I think he meant in general
by Freethefro on Feb 21, 2008 11:13 AM CST up reply actions
I would do this too
Keyon Dooling also can be a flashy, Pargo-esque player without the jacking up all the shots.
I think we'd have to remove the Magic 1st rounder, we easily could have gotten that and more before this season, but we're already fetching a lot for Big Ben considering his production this year....
I don't know if I pull the trigger if I'm the Magic though.....they might want Duhon, who while I bashed above, Duhon might fit their team better as he's more consistent than Arroyo, and that's something they need with their 3 bigs (Howard, Lewis, and Turkaglu).
Anything to get rid of Wallace

Perfect Wallace trade
Knicks get Ben Wallace

I ran it on the NBA trade machine last night and it works. Heat get Eddy Curry, who they for some reason want. Bulls get 2 expiring contracts and David Lee, a promising PF. And the Knicks get Ben Wallace, who they pair with Zach Randolph as the defensive ace.

LOL at this guy.
Maybe it was Paxson calling Ford to ask what he should do.
god
i have meetings all afternoon
Screw meetings!
maybe in honor of Wallace being traded
I betcha
Wallace is too pricey, Gordon's value is too low with his talk of big bucks in the $15M/season range, teams don't want to trade a few solid youngs to get a guy they won't resign.
Hinrich's a BYC and had a horrid start.
Noc is a BYC and thus his cost this year is too high (but he might be nice trade bait in the future, although I'm a noc fan).
Deng's value peaked last summer, he's dropped to reality and might even be a little on the low side due to his injuries.
Duhon is Duhon, an expiring contract and decent enough player but we aren't going to get anything valuable enough to replace him, so why trade him, plus it's not like teams are lining the phones asking about Duh.
Paxson would be stupid to trade Noah, Sef, T2 unless we could get a Marion, etc, which ain't happening.
I like the Cleveland trades for Wallace, but I'd be surprised if Larry Hughes's albatross contract and injury pronness wouldn't be involved.
Joe Smith makes the most sense to trade because of how well he's done in his minutes, but really he's a solid value, and hardly our problem (I know all the blah blah he steals minutes for T2 and JN) but no bother, without Joltin Joe, we'd really really be tough to watch this year.....
SO yeah I expect we'll do nothing, but it might be interesting to see what everyone else does.
Hughes
Terry (Cleveland, OH): Any updates on deals concerning Cleveland?
Chad Ford: (2:03 PM ET ) I'm getting lots of phone calls now ... sorry for delays. One source says the hold up in a Chicago-Cavs deal is that Cleveland wants Chicago to take back Larry Hughes and Drew Gooden for Ben Wallace, Joe Smith and Duhon. I can't really see the Bulls doing that. Hughes has two years, $26 million left on his contract and where do the Bulls play him?
by FPax on Feb 21, 2008 1:07 PM CST up reply actions
I gotta say
more to add . .
Chad Ford: (1:50 PM ET ) Ummmm ....All I can say is that owner Dan Gilbert is a huge Pistons fan ... maybe he sees something we don't. Duhon would help them. And for the Bulls ... Gooden is OK ... and they clear some cap ... but this is essentially a lateral move as far as winning this season
Edge of my seat......
Dammit!!!
What an awesome trade that would be
that trade
It wouldn't be a downside
And nothing is happening/nothing happened
Joe Smith and Ben Wallace do some things better than others. But what they do most is get in the way of the development of Noah and Tyrus Thomas (and Aaron Gray). Duhon similarly gets in the way of Thabo developing (though he's more of a 1 and Thabo's more of a 2, the Bulls' other guards are combo guards anyway).
It's clear all 3 of these Bulls would help Cleveland tremendously.
I suppose that what to do with Hughes is a question, but acquiring him theoretically makes Deng expendable. Not that he's equal to Deng, mind you, just that theoretically, Thabo and Hughes can each play the 2 or 3, with Noc backing them up.
The Bulls can then trade Deng for other value elsewhere in their current lineup or down the line.
But like I said, seems like nothing happened, so ownership/management is just gutless if this is true.
WOW!

Griffen?
Duhon
Hughes
Wally
Newble
Shannon Brown
???
???
???
Adrian Griffen?? please let one of the blanks be griffen and the rest be the other teams players, if your gonna get rid of wallace make sure you send his lackey with him...
So this is what it's like...
I'm gonna smoke at my desk now.

They just
I've been glued to the TV all day.
It's pretty much done pending league approval
Porr Du out in Seattle, Oklahoma
Big Ben
Hopefully Hughes can stay healthy and play....
I'm glad to see Wallace go if this is true, but it's a shame, I really hope he doesn't start playing hard, and really is washed up, because if he can still play then I'd really have to hate him.
Right now I believe he can play but doesn't want to with our team....but I've secretly thought perhaps he is as old as he looks.
If he suddenly becomes the player of last year even, then I'll be really pissed.....unless Hughes becomes the player of 2004-2005 (except without an injury of course).
Unlike most
3 out of 4 ain't bad.
Smith and Wallace gone, though? Can BOylan fuck this up?
Playing Gooden too much, for one
Tough to do, since the Bulls got rid of two of their post guys, but you never know...
I actually think he'll do something worthwhile
Getting rid of Wallace should trump whatever may happen with the Cavs getting better. So be it.

The Bulls must really want to get rid of Wallace
Kill two birds with one stone
Joy.
Bulls ended up with Hughes and Gooden out of this?
Wow.

Aldridge Blog confirms it
As the Akron Beacon-Journal first hinted at this a.m., and that the Four-Letter advanced, the Cavs, Bulls and Sonics have pulled the trigger on that big ol' three-way:
Larry Hughes and Drew Gooden to Chicago,
Ben Wallace and Joe Smith to Cleveland.
The Cavs' Ira Newble, Donyell Marshall and Adrian Griffin to Seattle for Wally Szczerbiak and Delonte West.
It's the very last name that makes me like this deal a little more for Cleveland. West can be a terrific guard for them playing off of LeBron and can knock down the open jumper. He also gives them size in the backcourt. Wally World is going to shoot 53, 54 percent from the floor until he dies, and certainly will spread the floor and give LBJ more driving room.
Ben is Ben. He's still a good rebounder. But he's not the man-on-man defender that he used to be, and he's a liability on offense. Maybe the Cavs go small at the ends of games. At the least, LBJ is surrounded by more veteran guys who've gone deep into the playoffs.
Chicago blows up a team that wasn't working, and gives Joakim Noah all the minutes he wants in the middle. Hughes can score, allowing Ben Gordon to come off the bench. Seattle continues to amass expiring contracts.

Wait, no Du in that trade!
Awesome Deal
I guess they can negotiate past 3pm as long as they were on the fone at 2:59
by Zac23 on Feb 21, 2008 2:36 PM CST reply actions
If this trade goes through, will it make the Bulls
I assume Noah gets the start at the 5, Gooden at the 4 (even though I would prefer Tyrus), Deng at the 3.
The backcourt picture is muddled. Hinrich will start, obviously, but then what? Does Thabo retain his starting position, or is it taken by Hughes? And how does Boylan manage Hughes and Gordon and Thabo, who all primarily play the 2? Duhon was at least a PG, which made the rotation somewhat easier to structure.

Classy departing words
Gah
I'd like to keep Joe Smith unless he's asking to be dealt to a contender.
uh, why?
by your friendly BullsBlogger on Feb 21, 2008 2:42 PM CST up reply actions
I like Joe as mentor Joe
It's over though. Smith is out.
by NBA Observer on Feb 21, 2008 2:59 PM CST up reply actions
So Du isn't being traded?
Gooden
A couple of bad things, but overall happy
Overall, I think the Cavs downgraded to an extent, at least in the front court. I don't see what they expect from Wallace that a healthy Varejao could do just as well. And the Cavs can have Wally. I admit I don't know the contract parameters of the non-Bulls players acquired by Cleveland, but right now, it looks like the same old Danny Ferry.
by messwiththebull on Feb 21, 2008 2:41 PM CST reply actions
So, basically, the only really good thing
What else are we getting?
Gooden will take Smith's minutes and the rest of the front court rotation will stay the same.
where's sue
by ScottieCartwright on Feb 21, 2008 2:41 PM CST reply actions
or she would say
Sorry. I never
Griffin may be involved
The three-way trade also would send Adrian Griffin to Seattle and send the Sonics' Wally Szczerbiak to Cleveland.
What do you think?
Please let that be true.
I really would have preferred that Duhon be traded
This deal is looking more and more like one set of old, useless veterans replacing another set of old, useless veterans.
Unless Boylan does something crazy and sits Gooden in favor of Tyrus.
Which is doubtful.
The primary beneficiary is Noah.
Oh, yeah, right.

I heard Bucher
It does help both teams...but not in so much of a drastic way that either will contend for a title. Expect some more things to happen in the off-season.

Every 10 minutes
exactly how
What is the long term strategy here?
Are the Bulls positioning themselves to trade Gordon? Or perhaps trade Hughes?
Considering the Bulls don't wanna pay
Now that we have another SG at least it wouldn't be so awful, not that I'm a huge Hughes fan.
or both
I think the strategy is to
- Turn two old guys up front into one younger guy up front (Wallace and Smith -> Gooden).
- A backup plan if/when Gordon moves on/is moved
*cues Bill Walton mode*
wallace:
"It's one of those things you come in and play hard and try to give what you give and not worry about what you can't control," Wallace said. "We had some guys that were banged up and beat up a bit. It was tough for us to get everybody on the floor and try to play basketball."
"They just have to go out and play," Wallace said. "They still have a good team. It's not like these guys don't know the game and know how to play. They just have to play together."
"It is a relief," Wallace said. "I just have to play basketball."

Dear Ben Wallace,

by Stacey Kings Emmy on Feb 21, 2008 2:57 PM CST up reply actions
I'm going to give Hughes a chance
So where does Hughes fit into the backcourt
Whose minutes does he take?
Does Thabo still start? Does Hughes take Gordon's minutes?
Will we see a lot of the three guard lineup with Hughes as the large guard?
What if Wallace
There is no doubt that Wallace will play better
Is this gonna be like
I just think that Wallace tends to be much
Maybe he'll ask Boylan . . .
Wasn't Tyrus close to both Smith and
Anyone else
Hold on
on ESPN radio and...
In a three-way trade with Chicago and Seattle that has been submitted for league approval, NBA front-office sources say that Cleveland will come away with four new teammates for James, headlined by Ben Wallace from the Bulls and sharpshooter Wally Szczerbiak from the Sonics.
The league office was notified of the deal before Thursday's 3 p.m. ET trading deadline, sources said, and is currently reviewing the trade details as required for formal approval.
After Cleveland watched two longstanding trade targets land elsewhere -- Mike Bibby in Atlanta and Jason Kidd in Dallas -- sources say that the deal calls for the Cavaliers to receive Wallace, Szczerbiak, Seattle point guard Delonte West, Chicago's Joe Smith and a future second-round pick from the Bulls.
Now on ESPN.com...
The Bulls, apparently abandoning their gamble on Wallace less than two seasons into the lucrative four-year deal they used to sign him away from Detroit, would get Cavaliers forward Drew Gooden and swingman Larry Hughes along with Cavs reserves Cedric Simmons and Shannon Brown.
The Sonics, shedding Szczerbiak in the name of additional payroll flexibility, come away with the expiring contracts of Cleveland's Ira Newble and Chicago's Adrian Griffin as well as Cavs veteran Donyell Marshall.
