Open Game Thread #53: Bulls at New Jersey Nets

Man, it's been a long time since I was able to make the assuredly regrettable decision to set-aside time for Bulls basketball. (let alone the time to create a game thread...)

Are the Nets still the Bulls arch-nemesis now that Kidd and Skiles are gone?

The crown jewel of the Nets' haul from Dallas, Devin Harris, won't be back tonight or for a couple weeks after that. If the other guys play, the net result is Kidd, Allen, and Wright going out and Diop, Hassell, Mo Ager coming in. Also it means lots of minutes for Marcus Williams, which usually works out for the opponent.

The crown jewel of "discussion topics most likely to get BaB commenters calling eachother names", Ben Gordon, is reportedly back tonight as well. Deng is a maybe.

Between Gordon's return, Thabo's 'emergence', Boylan wanting guys to 'earn jobs back', Gordon's anointment as 'bench player earned and forever', I foresee 30 minutes for Chris Duhon. Lots of 3-guard lineups (at least with Thabo this time), meaning Tyrus Thomas gets his few ill-fitting minutes at the 3 pinched. Then Boylan will yarble some crap postgame about 'seeing other guys'.

Despite fearing all these things, I'm happy Ben Gordon's back.

Let's get it started. Go Bulls!
I retain a bit more optimism than Matt for the second half of the season.  Let's do this!

"it means lots of minutes for Marcus Williams, which usually works out for the opponent..." that is, unless the opponent is a laptop computer.  Haha

Boylan said

we do have problems
starting with the fact that in your first game after the all-star break, with everybody finally healthy, you come out totally flat.

come on bulls.  a little life please.

Very funny comment by the Nets commentator
in reference to Boylan's substitution pattern:

"That's the trouble with jumping out to a lead against the Bulls.  Then they put in Ben Gordon and Luol Deng."

And in case you think that's some dweeb who doesn't know basketball, it was Marc Jackson who said it.

There's only rotation mins for three at the guard pos. C'mon Boylan!!!!!!!! He ain't gonna stop VC neither!!!!!!!

Great to see Tyrus with such confidence
He's getting to the line, blocking shots and creating havoc. 4 points, 2 blks in 5 minutes! Boylan better sit him down for the rest of the half. Ben Wallace needs to come back in.

NJ vs CHI starters
All 5 of New Jersey's starters are now in the game, attempting to close things out. By contrast, only 2 of our starters are in during crunch time. I'm not sure exactly what that says, but somewhere (either at the beginning or end) we're not playing our most effective players.
My guess is its a little of both with Duhon playing now and Wallace starting (but Hinrich hasn't played so well).
Scratch that, Hinrich in and Thomas out. Shoot me.

by Old Skool Sloan on Feb 20, 2008 8:50 PM CST reply actions

Bull starters are not their most effective players
They seem stagnant with Wallace in this whole season.  Tonite, when Noah has been in they sizzle.  With Wallace in they fizzle.  Thabo's size presents mismatch situations offensively and defensively that the Bull's need to exploit. Especially when it is clear that Gordon is not 100%.

Stormin' Norman
just let DuDu have it for having his back turned on Jefferson's OT layup.  Also blasted the team for the bad turnovers down the stretch.

Blamed the loss on the execution not the Refs (although that was brutally one-sided officiating at the end).

When I tuned in at 96 all,
the play where Jefferson waltzes in untouched made me glad I didn't watch the whole game. Still, incredibly frustrating.

It wasn't only Du, either--a player I shall refer to as "Ben Wallace" (for Sue and hscs, who don't like negative nicknames), our $60 million defender, rotated late, jumping for the blocked shot on the near side of the lane while Jefferson finished his reverse layup on the other side.

If you're Boylan, what do you do--run the guys hard next practice? I suppose if he's using Skiles' small-ball, no-offense playbook, he may as well start running them hard in practice, too. Honestly, what's a coaching staff to do when the Bulls routinely lose close games because of mental mistakes...

"Duhon, don't make that garbage-time jumper... Save it for the next game!"

by bullhockey on Feb 21, 2008 5:09 AM CST up reply actions

Du singled out - but yeah, a team error.
I think Du was singled out because he was right under the basket and never looked for the ball.  That's something that happens in my "middle-aged flabby white guys" game at lunch, but you don't expect it to happen to an NBA player.

Truly, that play is complete team defensive breakdown.  I fault the other 4 guys more than Thabo.  He was severely overplaying to Jefferson's right, so he thought he had interior help.  Either that, or he didn't think Jefferson could dribble with his left hand.

by exult463 on Feb 20, 2008 9:48 PM CST reply actions

He had a poor shooting game
but still played well overall.  Rebounds, assists, blocks, getting fouled and converting free throws.  When you can have an off shooting night but still contribute, that's the sign of a good player.

by Jaina on Feb 20, 2008 9:50 PM CST reply actions

Tiny Ball = No Thabo
Jefferson got by Thabo for that layup and it seemed like he didn't have meaningful time after that.  The worst part is that the rest of the team was just as cuplable on that play, but Thabo gets the hook.

Thabo wasn't perfect
but where was Deng?  did he reinjure himself?  he played only 19 minutes - could have used him for a few more, i feel, without harm.

but midget lineup is inexcusable against Carter and Jefferson.  it's bad enough when the midget lineup is used against a team whose shooting guard ISNT as big (and playing as well) as Carter, but that's just pathetic.  cause now we have a shrimp guarding a big shooter AND a small forward.  the only thing worse was when Skiles used it vs Houston and McGrady.

by Jaina on Feb 20, 2008 10:18 PM CST up reply actions

he didn't
get "the hook" because of Jefferson blowing past him...Boylan was doing offensive/defensive substitutions at that time...when play stopped, they were getting ready to go back on offense, hence the switch

I'm not sure who was more pathetic...
Noc, who wildly jumped into the air with the ball in contravention of basic basketball principles taught to fourth graders the world over, or Gordon, who manages to fall down and get blocked at a rate befitting a one-legged pygmy with a chronic inner ear problem.

I have been watching Bulls basketball
obsessively for 20 years and I can't recall a season more frustrating than this one.

Boylan
Should be fired before the season is over.  He has no business coaching in the NBA.  The 3 guard lineup with Wallace and Duhon on the floor at the same time is a joke.  In the post-game conference, he said that he needs to get the rotation in order.  Here's an idea: cross the 3 on 5 offensive lineup off of the rotation card.

Yes, there were some big missed calls, but the reality is that this team is lousy, out-coached and cannot execute in key situations.

I have read a lot of posts by Paxson apologists on other sites.  Let's face it: he sucks.  He "stockpiled assets" and failed to pull the trigger on any trades, he signed Wallace to a cap-killing contract and he now allows Boylan to waste time and talent by overplaying Wallace and Smith to the exclusion of Noah and Tyrus.

Let me just remind everyone that the Bulls raised ticket prices this year.  Thanks, Bulls!

Du
Did anyone else see that 35 footer Du took at the end of the game, after making a 3 from the corner?  I took a shot like that in 7th grade...I'm 60 now and they STILL haven't put me back in the game.  What do we have to do to put his ass on the bench?

I've seen him do that before
when he makes a shot or two and then he decides it is a good idea to launch a way longer 3 early on the shotclock instead of setting up the offense.

No one whines
more on this team than BG. Jesus I'm sick of him and his crunched up whiney little face.
