Boylan's job interview is not going well

This was kindof buried in a Tuesday (which was Boylan day, or something) column in the Herald:

There is still plenty of time for the Bulls to make a late surge this season, which could earn Boylan the job permanently.

Yikes.

A recent diary here brought up the potential problems with a playoff run, and while I don't worry about the loss of only a few ping-pong balls, I am worried that Boylan will get his interim tag removed.

Setting aside the veteran caucus fiasco, punting Boylan is especially acceptable after a game like last night, where Tyrus played 8 first-half minutes while Joe Smith and Ben Wallace together in a 4:30 stretch in the 4th were -10 and put the Hornets up for good. The team scored 36 points in the 2nd half, and naturally it was blamed as 'lack of energy'.

It was unlikely that the Bulls were going to win, and it took a great effort from Nocioni (that's the guy I remember not hating) to keep them in the game in the first place. But between another night of over-reliance on the old-man frontcourt, a possession where Duhon was guarding Peja ("Duhon does good in these matchups", says Tom Dore before Peja was fouled and hit a turnaround jumper), and not only limiting time for Tyrus but putting him only at the SF spot. Too much Aaron Gray for my liking too, although a Duhon/Thabo/Tyrus/Noah/Gray lineup was fun, and unfairly criticized postgame (it went to hell only when Wallace joined the party), Aaron had no good lummox matchup, and finished in 12 minutes with 3TOs and 4 fouls.

Boylan's only the answer if the organization is too cheap to pay two real coaches at the same time. Unfortunately for Pax, he hasn't built an uber-talented coach-proof roster. They need a real one.

Thomas at the 3

When Peja was making shots and Chicago was trying to make him give up equal output with his poor defense, wasn't this the exact time when playing Tyrus at the 3 makes the most sense? Thomas can post him up and guard him on the perimeter.

Does Tyrus have to slash a teammates tires forcing them to be late for a game so he can get some burn?

Maybe Skiles wanted to play Tyrus and Boylan was the one manipulating Thomas into the Skiles doghouse.

you're right, against Peja isn't the worst of scenarios.

It still forces Tyrus to stand in the corner, so he's catching the ball and having to create from the 3-point line instead of closer to the basket.

I guess the worst part is that if he's only seeing backup-3 minutes, when Deng comes back he's back to completely buried. This team needs a trade bad.

Get to low block, call for ball

Every possession until Byron Scott changes defensive rotation or goes to his bench. With Joe Smith on the floor any guard can come feed Tyrus and then rotate to the opposite wing with Joe Smith coming across to set a screen for that guard. Tyrus then has Joe Smith on the wing if he wants to pass out for a jumpshot or a passing lane to the opposite wing to hit a guard for a 3 pt attempt.

All game I was watching a our 4/5 players as Wallace, Smith, Gray, and Noah. Tyrus will be lucky to get on the floor at all once Deng returns if he does return.

and then Noah and Tyrus (energy guys) sit on the bench the 2nd half. Noah came in when the game was over and too late. Speaking of late our guy Ben Wallace was late once again!

I say Adrian Griffin and Noah call a vote and suspend Wallace for the rest of the season for being late. Now, is that a simple majority or a two-thirds vote? What constitutes a quorum? I'd like to see the Bulls by-laws.

I don't understand the Boylan hate

:D OK, that was a joke. But only partially. I understand most of the complaints, but Pax made it pretty clear he was going to have a major say in how many minutes players were getting when he fired Skiles and hired Boylan.

So for that specific criticism, I don't see why Boylan always gets the heat. If he's not doing what he's asked, I'd be pretty shocked.

I'm not sure how much influence Pax has on the game-to-game rotations. I wouldn't be surprised if it was just 'get us to the playoffs, Jim' and Boylan figures that means play Ben Wallace. Also, they are trying to trade these guys still so they can't be completely benched.

Don't want to get alecy here, but seems reasonable to think that Paxson may be letting, or even encouraging, Boylan to give minutes to Wallace and Smith until they're traded or no longer can be. OK, maybe that's just more unsubstantiated hope on my part. They've still got a playoff spot to fight for.

I think Paxson may have had to promise

Boylan that he would have a free hand with rotations for awhile in order to get Boylan to take the job. When Pete Myers is your only other option, you don't have much of a bargaining position. Just speculation, but it fits with Boylan's two interviews for the job and the rotations that contradict Paxson's statements prior to hiring a new coach.

why was Thabo guarding C. Paul

Isn't Thabo's purpose to guard the "big" shooting guard. Paul was way too fast for Thabo and should of switched over to Duhon. Kirk should or been the starter and lost his job due to injury? Boylan will never get things right. He is a horrible coach and I never thought I would hate someone's rotations/plans more than Skiles.

Thabo made some really stupid plays....

I remember the exact play when Thabo drove into three Hornets on the base line and then threw it to the other side of the floor for ANOTHER turnover....Boylan was screaming at him pretty good...Thabo's next jumpers barely hit the rim...is this guy such a punk he can't be yelled at???

Remember Thabo is still kind of young, he still has a lot of learning to do. The only way he can get better is by playing more experienced players like Chris Paul (who is one of the best point guards in the NBA) to get better! Dont be so hard on the young man.

The biggest rotation problem

is leaving guys in for 24 straight minutes in the second half. Skiles always used to do it with Deng. And everybody would complain about Deng disappearing at the end. Boylan did the same thing with Noc last night and it's impossible to imagine Noc being an energy guy after 24 straight minutes.

Well i was

at the game again last night and Boylan and his miserable substitutions and lineups make me wanna PUKE. This guy has no feel for the eb/flow of the NBA game. He is way out of his league here. Sure the corpse got 17 boards or whatever but he's also the softest center in the league. CP and TC were eating his lunch all night long in the middle.

Tryus couldnt pay Boylan to play. How does he not get any burn in the 2nd half at all? He had a nice 8 min strech. The team was playing well he had 3 points a rb and a steal i think. The team increaded there lead. All while playing out of his natural position. That turn over in the corner was all BW (corpse) So frustrating.

BTW ill take KH over C-Doo any day. Leaving KH on the bench for the streches he did was unacceptable. Earn your spot back? Thats gay.. This guy should be playing big minutes if his body is able. We needed his scoring. I realise he was in a bit of foul trouble but deal with it when he fouls out and stop out coaching yourself.

I love the Yeti but he shouldnt be taking TT minutes as a big out there. I thought he was way over used last night. If Boylan gets the gig after this season im selling my seats 4ever. This guys 10 times worse than Skiles. Atleast i thought Skiles had a plan. This guy couldnt coach himself out of a paper bag...

This season ranks right up there with the post

Brand trade year as the most depressing and agenizing season Ive ever seen as a Bulls fan.

Yet I can't believe they are still in the playoff race. Honestly, I'm of the mind set play the young guys, tank the season, (even though they may play better then the old farts), and get a good draft pick. Or package the top pick with the corpse for someone decent.

I can't stand these late game match up disasters where the other team's stars simply dominate the ending 3 minutes. There's is NO REASON TO PLAY THE VETS IF THIS IS THE BEST THEY CAN DO!

Trading for Allstar players

just doesnt happen you'll still need to ship Deng or Gordan... I swear Pax just doesnt get it. He could have had Bradon Roy or Rudy Gay or even Carmello Anthony. He needs to stop drafting players that dont have all-star potential. Every year its the same thing they draft the same type of players. Three years in a row he drafted Point guards. And we still dont have a good one. And if we don't watch out we'll see Ben Gordan leave the team and get nothing for him. This guy should have been traded the year they gave big money to Kirk and Noc its no mystery that Ben gonna want to make more money than Kirk and Pax should have known that from the start. Fact is Pax doesnt know what he's doing. Drafted Duhon when you could have traded up and got Dwight Howard. (another all-star caliber player if i may add) Then the dumbest move I've yet to see was the trade of Tyson Chandler for PJ Brown and JR Smith (Thats right JR Smith) and he turns around and sends him to Denver for Adrian Griffin (nuts!). Oh and lets not forget them flat out releasing Tim Thomas after keeping him off the court the whole season and killing his trade value.

he gave Boylan the easy out last night in the post-game press conference. He asked "why no Tyrus in the 2nd half, you just wanted to look at other guys?"

Then Boylan quickly responds with a quiet "I just wanted to look at other guys".

He should've just asked "why no Tyrus in the 2nd half?" and left it at that. You dummy, you gave him the answer. Jim's no Skiles when it comes to addressing the media...I would've loved to see him squirm for a few seconds trying to conjure up something.

Embarrassment

BW never gets one difficult rebound in traffic and couldn't keep anyone off the boards. TT had a couple very nice drives to the hoop. Even if he didn't score, he drew a couple fouls and forced the defense to collapse on him in the paint, making it easier for Noah to get offensive rebounds.

BTW, does anyone notice what a grandstander Wallace is on defense. When opposing centers play him on offense, they sag way off him, making it impossible for him to get an entry feed anywhere. When Wallace plays a center with the ball outside of 20 feet, he crowds them, creating opportunities for them to go back door and get better position. Maybe a younger Wallace forces turnovers, but he hasn't done that at all this season. I don't know what makes me more mad, Wallace not showing hard on screen rolls or Wallace playing too aggressively on his on ball defense. Either way, he is terrible.

Boylan needs to go this season

he's hurting the development of our young players, and the organization's future, because his career tragectory depends on scraping into the playoffs. A real coach, with a longer contract, could play our youngsters more, let them learn, and head to their potential. Better to start that movement NOW, and generate some momentum and confidence for the next, than to bring in someone cold. They should be playing for the future. Because this present is grim.

I plan on repeating this over and over as long as he's coaching this team. The Bulls have got to be the only team in the league that would play Aaron Gray over Tyrus Thomas in the 4th quarter of a close game. Gray had no business being out there last night against a team as athletic as the Hornets. He looked like he needed an oxygen tank at times in the 4th quarter.

Help me cure my obsession.

Based solely on my observations, I am convinced that the Bulls miss more layups, dunks, and chip shots than any other team in the NBA. It drives me mad. I'm fixated on it. Last night, when the Bulls were leading 40-34 (I think), there was a stretch where the team missed seven or eight shots right under the basket. Gray missed three in a row. Wallace missed a couple. One of the guards missed a layup. Etc.

(Digression: The primary problem with Ben Wallace is that he is offfensively useless, even directly under the basket. He either misses a layup, clangs a dunk off the back of the rim, gets blocked, or gets fouled and misses the free throws. So even when he rebounds the basketball or gets a great feed from a penetrating guard, he typically can't finish. It costs the team points during every game. Most other centers, even those without a great deal of skill, could achieve better results in the paint.)

I can't stand it. These are professional athletes. It's inexplicable and disgusting.

I wonder if the statistics confirm my anecdotal, eye-witness observations. Maybe my perception of our ineptitude is exaggerated because it causes such emotional aggravation. Is there a statistic which tracks a team's shooting percentage within two or three feet of the basket? If so, how do the Bulls compare to other NBA squads in that regard?

It would probably take a lot of time to measure this, but do you think the Bulls as a team have more turnovers when Ben Wallace is on the court versus when Ben Wallace is on the bench?

Maybe this is something that is tracked already.

Last year the Bulls were the worst shooting

team in the league at 53.1% within about 3 feet of the basket. This year, they are only shooting 49.9% so it's safe to assume they're last this year as well.

I'm not in favor of any trades that are going to place Tyrus Thomas even lower on the playing time chart unless the incoming big is a proven low post scorer.

Stackhouse would be a nice exchange for Gordon. He is 33 and their numbers closely peg to each other. Stack's 6'7" too.

clarification

I don't think a deal of Gordon for Stackhouse is good. I'm merely reflecting on the exact makeup of that trade in terms of what is good and what is bad.

I do think Gordon's career will pretty much match Stackhouse though. However, Gordon won't approach Stack's free throw attempts per game averages.

Wallace won't play on tomorrow

Apparently someone is his family has died. Not that I wish death upon anyone but at least this gives the Bulls another chance to see how well they play without his lethargic ass.

And i am? You must have never read one of my please let Tyrus play diaries. Truth is Dampier or Erica as Shaq likes to refer to him as is just gonna keep the bench warm and collect a pay check. While doing so he wont be a distraction or demand playing time or suspend our young players.

I cant wait for tomorrows game now that BW (corpse) isnt going to be playing. Bet the Bulls win big.

And C-Doo deserves to start over Kirk why? Ow because he go 5 and 5. what a stud that guy is. Not like Kirk scored 15 after his first game back in over a week. Guess that doesnt warrant earning your spot back. Maybe he needs to drop 30 off the bench to get it back? I wish he would explain what it takes to get your spot back.

I'm not making any comment about your opinion on where Tyrus should be on the depth chart.

This team is a fucking mess

Not having one solid starter now.

Not knowing who's going to coach next year.

No one even wants any of our players anymore.

Guys that should be playing 30+ minutes barely getting any time.

I'm sure there's many more things to whine about but I just had to get those 4 off my chest for now.

Boylan has got to go ASAP. Anyone think we can get a FIRE BOYLAN chant going at the UC? His reliance on Joe Smith and Ben Wallace is infuriating. If the team was batting .600 I'd keep my mouth shut but he is sticking with a plan that clearly does not work game after losing game. Go to the kids, idiot.

Starting Duhon until Kirk earns his spot back is equally maddening. Duhon is a nice Euroleague player but has no biz in the NBA. He cannot shoot to save his life. My blog http://www.benchduhon.com is devoted to covering how bad of a shooter he is. I had never before been compelled to blog but Duhon playing significant minutes for the Bulls is too much for me. Kirk is no world beater but to suggest that he needs to play hard to take Du's spot is an insult to my intelligence.

I pay $230 a game for tickets to see lame players coached by a complete clown. I understand that the fans have no right to order the team to make changes, but this season is so unbelievable that I think the fans are the only ones making any sense.

One night during a Bulls loss that saw Duhon shooting 10% I flew off the handle and joked to my friends that I was going to blog about it. After a couple of posts people I didn't know started sending me photos. I have a bunch that are all great.

Starting Du over Hinrich Should Get Boylan Fired

Today. Not at the end of the season, today. Anyone who has watched this team play over the last 3 years knows that Du can't hold Hinrich's jock. One 34 point game against a bad team and Boylan is ready to make Du the centerpiece of the team.

I'm not a big fan of Hinrich, but he was playing much better with Thabo, not having to defend 2 guards. Boylan is an idiot. This team just refuses to puts its best players on the court, and I don't get it.

maybe Griffin & Wallace voted for this type of treatment for all players, so Boylan is going to finally bench Wallace and won't let him win back his starting spot.

Anyone else like

Tyrus' running left-handed Hook? He shot it twice. First was close and he made the second. Not smooth looking at all, but I've been praying for a Bulls' big to get a low post move and other than Gray's hook and Joe's assortment it's all they've got. The announcers credited it to working with Mike Brown, but I think that's speculation.

That would about end me for the Bulls this year. Honestly...if Noah doesn't start for Wallace...that may be time for me to go into a college basketball shell. Because I swear to god, Duke has better shooters than we do, and Memphis has better athletes.

One other thing

according to Boylan, Wallace is not guarunteed a starting spot when he returns. And god knows - if he has to earn it, we've seen the last of "Big Ben."
