Open Game Thread #51: Bulls vs. New Orleans Hornets

Your chance to scout Rasual Butler. Or pine for Tyson Chandler. Man, I miss that guy. Not in the sense where I'm constantly wishing that they didn't trade him away (there's plenty of reasons it happened, some made sense, and hindsight being 20/20 and all that), but when he was actually playing well (before he took the summer off, signed the huge contract, and spent the next season hurt and/or ineffective) he was my favorite Bull. Jannero Pargo wasn't near my favorite, because he signified that time ('Pargo time') when Skiles gave up and hoped Pargo would shoot the team back into the game. Sometimes he did, though, I'll give him that.

Hinrich's likely back, Lu and Gordon are out.  Duhon's also hurt but you'd have to think he'll play especially if Hinrich's out. So, it'll have to be a heck of a combination of  effort and luck to get a win. New Orleans is very good and completely healthy. I didn't mention them once when talking about Western Conference contenders, but that's only because of ignorance. Also, they do have a shoddy bench and are especially thin up front.

Enjoy the game, guys
I'll be hoping for a win, but I'm joining the Bulls on the injured list and watching from bed (list me as flu-like symptoms).
Maybe I'll take up hockey.

Should we send coach Boylan over to check up on you?

Too bad we could'nt
convince them to take Wallace

All I see is worthless wall-ass watching Paul
run by him and dunk....like he wasn't even there...

It might a long night if Wallace sees many minutes

Put Noah in now!  No spark at all.

Nocioni only one really showing effort on O.
One shot by BW and now he just stands there..... Not even setting picks

Frigggg....
he shouldn't even be PLAYING...
running downcourt with the ball and instead of passing it to someone who can run, getting it taken from him...

ANY center who pulls that shit should be BENCHED.

by Bluelou on Feb 12, 2008 8:03 PM CST up reply actions

I agree
We need to shop him harder or bench him play Noah and TT. Smith should be coming off the bench not playing 40 minutes a game

by TMD on Feb 12, 2008 8:06 PM CST up reply actions

Sometimes
I wish we'd trade Smith to a playoff team.  He has been having a great year and would be extremely effective playing 15-20 min with a good team.  All we are going to do to him is blow his knee out playing him too much.

Like most games early
it's all from the perimeter, except for the Noc drives (Wallace doesn't count). But inside/out is what they've done more recently, why revert back to early season "style"?

Hinrich
Shooting well and taking it to the lane.  I like what I see.  Perhaps he was watching some vids while laying off the ribs.  He usually has those shots if he just drives into the lane.

Not a ton
of jump shot chucking, if you discount a few Thomas line drives.  I'd rather they get as many points in the paint they can.

by cranscape on Feb 12, 2008 8:27 PM CST up reply actions

I like the results.
They are using their size and getting the fouls.

can't rebound, shoot, or now pass.  Sit him down already! The young guys have had a breather.  Bring them back in.  At least there was offense.  Gray has better offense with one shoe on than Wallace chucking up hook shots.

but granted there are things to be crabby about.  Reminds me of watching games with my dad.

Are we just not allowed to play the guys who got us a lead in the first place?  That must be it since Wallace is on the floor.

This team blows
they're just really bad.  You get the feeling that NO is in cruise control, waiting to win.  Then you look up - down 5.

I don't know how many motherf'in games
will follow the same pattern.

How many f'in times THIS SEASON have the Bulls been tied or within 2-4 with three minutes left, only to see the opponent go on a 10-2 run. It happens over and over.

Bulls cant f'in score down the stretch or get stops in close games. Game after game. Healthy or not.

Bulls can't win 2 in a row to save Boylan's ass
But they sure know how to LOSE multiple games in a row....

It's so friggin' obvious....
The Bulls had NO on the ropes several times tonight(as they have had MANY other teams this year), and then the starters come back in and kill the energy / gameflow and they let NO back in the game.
And that's just what opposing teams are waiting for with the way Boylan coaches.

Then they just step it up a notch in the 4th Q and walk away with it.

I can't decide who I despisee worse - Skiles or Boylan...

And then having to listen to the same old BS outta boylan's mouth in the post game....
JUST like Skiles sounded like....

UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGGHHHH!!!

Is it spring training yet?

by Bluelou on Feb 12, 2008 9:58 PM CST reply actions

I say Boylan
is more worthy of your bile.  Skiles, for all his flaws, turned this team around - then ego, money, rumor and injuries brought him down.  Boylan was handed a talented team that could play, and has played, a lot better than his Bulls.  His goals are at odds with the long term development of our players, the future of the organization, and the watchability of the product.  He's awful.  He brings nothing.

by Freethefro on Feb 12, 2008 10:30 PM CST up reply actions

Felt bad for Kirk,
having to guard Paul one on one with those ribs. Stacy said it: "You gotta trap him", but it was already 8 pts w/1:30 to go....too late Stacy. Thabo w/ good 4th, good plays down the stretch. Noc doing what he do....You can tell if he'll have a game by his start. Kirk not so good at end, but he's hurt....and he got them started finally in the 1st. I'll have to check the stat line, but between Smith and Noah, they did well with West it seemed.

They needed two Thabos at the end, one for Peja and one for Paul. But Paul is too good, really. You have to get some offensive execution, and it seems tougher to do with Wallace in there.

by marionette on Feb 12, 2008 10:04 PM CST reply actions

I could've sworn Stacy
wanted Gray to trap. That's like the Yeti chasing a squirrel.

Speaking of the crew, I'm sick of Red's Ron Santo shit whenever Tyrus does anything. Wallace threw him a crappy pass that he had to lunge out of bounds and save, and Red thought it was Tyrus just randomly throwing a pass fifteen feet in the air behind his back.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Feb 12, 2008 11:53 PM CST up reply actions

I thought
New Orleans was only in this game in the first half with offensive rebounding and 2nd chance points.  We led by 6 at halftime, but if we had kept them off the offensive glass we would have led by easy double digits.

The squad plays well without Deng, Hinrich, and Gordon so long as they are not asked to come from behind.

by NBA Observer on Feb 13, 2008 7:50 AM CST up reply actions

Where was Tryus in the 2nd?
He was active, grabbing rebounds and starting the break in the 1st half and once again he doesn't play in the 2nd?  I'm pissed.  Doesn't "our coach" know that if Tyrus didn't get back in in the 2nd half against Golden State they wouldn't have won that game?  So why doesn't he get him in this game again in the 2nd half?

by GoldenThreePeat on Feb 12, 2008 10:05 PM CST reply actions

I got to go to the game.
Sefolosha should be getting steady rotation minutes, while he can't shoot, he can definitely score some inside and he is a legitimate rebounder.  Ben Wallace had one of those nights where he showed a bit of energy and played pretty well; though he was still prone to stupid passes and stupid shots.  Noc also had one of those nights where he actually finishes when he drives to the basket; his game would be much more tolerable if he stopped shooting threes and made his shot selection similar to the first three quarters of this game.

There was a period in there when Tyrus and Noah were on the floor and the team looked pretty fluid; it would have been nice to have put Gordon on the floor so they could have knocked down a few more open jumpers, but they still had a lot of life.  There was another period where Gray/Duhon/Hinrich/Noah/Noc were on the floor, and there was considerably less fluidity.

Boylan seemed to be obsessing over match-ups and kept putting in the strangest guys at the strangest times.

During a couple timeouts, Noah sat away from the huddle looking pretty upset.

Overall, you just can't do anything about a guy like Paul, who really reminds me of Isaiah Thomas.  He is such a good dribbler and he creates space on every shot.  He switches hands with ease in midair and has eyes in the back of his head.

by Kemp @ Blog a Bull on Feb 12, 2008 11:20 PM CST reply actions

I've been shocked at how good
Thabo and Noah are defensively right now. Really impressive for guys with few NBA minutes so far.

by marionette on Feb 13, 2008 1:52 AM CST up reply actions

That said
they did get burned by West and Paul/Peja respectively.  Noah still has some distance to go before I would have complete confidence in him.  But he is a rookie, so it will come in time.

by Kemp @ Blog a Bull on Feb 13, 2008 2:09 AM CST up reply actions

Hmmmmm....
So Supposedly Wallace showed up late to the pre-game shoot around today. The team fined him an undisclosed amount of money.

I also heard Noah tied his shoes wrong and Wallace wants him suspended for 25 games.

My new fav player to grab 16 boards against us
Did anyone else find Tyson Chandler's comments about his former team oddly reassuring? Like all the negatives from this disastrous season can someday be resolved? I'm not sure why, but hearing him talk about going through the Floyd/Cartwright/Skiles eras as well as stating sources for this year's problems (players not reacting to Skiles, contract fiascos) sounded sympathetic and put me in an alright place.

And to me, that's even more amazing considering I should be freaking out that he's not averaging a double-double with the Bulls.
