Sam Smith is once again my man

And a man of the people. Most BlogABull people, anyway:

I say it's time for change, with the Bulls, and for myself and Tyrus Thomas.

I vote for Thomas to play, play more and play regularly.

Forget experience.

Tyrus today!

...

What we seem to have forgotten is the reason we were so high on this Bulls team. Perhaps we were just high? Nah.

It's not because they had a star or a low-post presence or great overall talent. It was because they played hard all the time, they would defend and they could bring waves of young, long-limbed players into the game to defend, disrupt and frazzle opponents.

Those guys were Thomas, Thabo Sefolosha and Joakim Noah, primarily. They all were supposed to be in the rotation.

The Bulls were to be the ultimate better-than-the-sum-of-its-parts team. They still could be.

No, the Bulls don't scare the Celtics or the Pistons, but they've regained some spirit and wins. That had to be the short-term goal. But with plenty of days off this week and then a road trip, it's time to see what the kids can do.

(Side note: The latest edition of Carnival of the NBA is up at YAYSports.)

I saw this
and couldn't believe my eyes.  Wait for one bad game or a silly turnover here or there and it will change.  Tyrus has the ability to change a game without scoring points (in a good way)

The only way young players can learn,
is if they play.  The problem with our young talent is that they aren't getting enough minutes.  It takes more than a good scheme, good teaching, and good motivation for a player to be good.  They need experience.  The Bulls coaching staff needs to let Tyrus, Thabo, Aaron Gray, and Noah play before they can fully evaluate how good they are, and how much they have to offer.  I agree that Tyrus needs to be the first of these four off the bench into the game, because he does have the ability to change a game, defensively, and if given time, and proper motivation (which comes with getting minutes), he could become a threat on offense, as well.

All it's going to take is a mini winning streak to get our confidence back up to where it needs to be.  We've given away too many games late to the point where it's wearing on the team.  Our next five games are all winnable, with the only real tough game coming against Orlando.  Yes, the final four are on the road, but road wins are what can help boost a teams confidence more than anything else.  After these five games, we have six of eight at home, where we can get ourselves right back into the mix.

Those guys are probably practicing 2 hours for every hour of game.  Of course, under Boylan maybe that's not the case :|

Matchups determine minutes?
This is what I had seen last season in the Skiles rotation.  Thabo and Tyrus were different rookies than Gordon, Duhon, Deng, or Nocioni in that the latter were coming from big time colleges or the pro league in Europe playing major minutes prior to their arrival in Chicago.  Gordon, Du, Deng, and Noc played because their wasn't much else on the roster to play.

Start the 2006-07 season and it was clear that Thabo and Tyrus could contribute, but it would be dictated based on matchups, injuries to starters, and the early gameflow that may put a start in foul trouble.  Thabo and Tyrus would both enter games where it was deemed their style of play would best help the team.  This season that all seemed to disappear.  And with the arrival of Noah, another player that played lots of minutes in college for a big time program going as deep as you can go into the CBB postseason, it seemed like he would enter games in the same way that Thabo and Tyrus entered games last season.

It was clear to me, in the 2nd half of the 06-07 season the minutes for Thabo and Tyrus were crucial to victories, resting our starters, and extending the roster to prepare for a deep playoff push.  That all came together in a momentus sweep of the NBA champs despite falling in the final regular season game creating the most difficult path to the EC Finals.

Smith says Boylan is playing the vets to establish loyalty.  This seems to me a communication method with Ben Wallace to get him and Boylan on the same page and know they can trust each other to execute where we know they can execute.  Eventually the vets will need some breaks and Thabo, Tyrus, Noah, and Gray are going to be the guys that will make this happen.

I like Sam Smith...
All I can say about Mr. Smith is that he has ALWAYS taken the time to reply to my questions, and was nice enough to answer some in his column...I think that makes him a good guy...and maybe he has come around on Ty, life is short and it is a new year...he spoke of hip replacements, so maybe he is starting to feel his time is short, so make the best of it...

by SlickRick76 on Jan 8, 2008 10:12 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I have to 2nd that.
Sam's answered literally every question I've emailed him, even publishing 3 of them. The only one he ever passed on was when he published and answered a question that was almost exactly like mine.

Don't get me wrong; I love to rip on professional sports writers, and this being a blogging community, I'd guess there are a few of us who probably take pride in ripping down anything "establishment".

But from his columns and my limited interactions with him over email, Sam seems like a genuinely nice guy. He also seems to have that old-time charm. Not like Paul Newman. Like Peter Falk.

I have a question...
Why is it that everyone from Iowa, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, etc....all move to Chicago and act like where they are from was the greatest place ever??? If Columbus or Des Moines are so f***in' great, why don't you stay there!? Instead, they flock to Lincoln Park and crowd up my blue line...how is that for a shot at all of the Big Ten:)? The once proud Bulls franchise....
Has been laid to ruin. Ten years of incompetence from the GM position. Ten years of a non-stop coaching carousel. Ten years of dumb trades, ridiculous contracts, and mind-numbing draft picks. The greatest achievement was winning one playoff series. This franchise is indeed in the worst of times.

Folks, the Bulls are the anti-Spurs. Ben Wallace for $60 million? He makes almost as much as Duncan! They draft the undisciplined Thomas over the rock-solid Aldridge? Re-sign the sub-mediocre Hinrich but let Gordon and Deng walk (they inevitably will). And the Wallace singing. Everything starts and ends with the Wallace singing. Paying this pouting chemistry-killer that much for 4 points, 8 rebounds, and 1 block... undescribable.

Look at Jason Maxiel, look at Glen Davis, these undersized power forwards outproduce Wallace on defense yet also make impact contributions on offense, all for 1/10th the salary.

Simply incredible... nothing the Bulls have done over the last 10 years is defensible. It all defies common sense. The franchise must rebuild. Get rid of these "character" guys who can't play a lick of ball and start over. There is no other way. Paxson, not Skiles is the master of this disaster. Until he is canned the Bulls are stuck in the mud feeding the egos of these "character" scrubs.

While I agree that the Ben Wallace deal
was a mistake, I have to disagree with your overall assessment of John Paxson as GM.

In 02', the Bulls roster included Jalen Rose ( the only player to have over 40 mpg), Donyell Marshall, Jamal Crawford, Marcus Fizer, Jay Williams, the twin toddlers (Eddie Curry, Tyson Chandler), and let's not forget Dalibor Bagoric (even though, try as might to').

Since becoming GM, Pax' has drafted the entire starting roster (outside of Ben Wallace and Joe Smith) and win Executive of the Year.

Not to mention the win total increase...

2006-07  49  33 .598
2005-06  41  41 .500
2004-05  47  35 .573
2003-04  23  59 .280
2002-03  30  52 .366

If the core three (Deng, Gordon, Hinirch)did not have such a poor start, this team would have at least been above 500.

I think Pax' has done a great job in a relatively short timespan.

Maybe Sam Smith can only antagonize
one Bull or former Bull at a time.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I got a huge laugh out of his ass-making out of Scottie Pippen, who is otherwise a time-tested Sam Smith favorite.

Because, apparently, Pippen doesn't do a good enough job of making an ass out of himself.

http://myespn.go.com/blogs/truehoop/0-29-17/Monday-Bullets.html

It starts by Sam publishing the earnest column, where he presents the Scottie quote of "Why couldn't I?" regarding coaching the Bulls.

http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/basketball/bulls/cs-071230smithonbullsscottiepippen,1 ,293563.column?coll=cs-home-headlines

Answer:  for starters, because you insult everyone in the organization. Sam quotes Scottie denigrating the hand-picked choices of the GM and former teammate who gave him a cushy transition into retirement, calling Tyrus a brainless bimbo of an NBA player, calling Hinrich and Gordon midgets, calling Nocioni as distracting as Rasheed Wallace, and pronouncing Ben Wallace someone who doesn't know the game.

http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/basketball/bulls/cs-071230smithbox,1,2317046.story

Next comes a follow-up call to Sam, apparently laced with some choice language, in which Pip tells Sam that Krause couldn't have made him look worse. So says Sam in (yes, you guessed it) a follow-up column.

http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/basketball/bulls/cs-080106samsmithscottiepippen,1,197 9103.story?coll=cs-bulls-headlines

I still think the reason the record got so bad
was that Skiles was forced to give young players minutes.  That caused resentment from the older players and probably made Skiles uneasy watching his record go into the tank.

Remember, everyone thought this team was going to be GOOD--not developmental.  We wouldn't even trade our core wonders for Kobe Freakin' Bryant because they were so good.

Boylan probably agreed to coach if he could play to win.

by hhi on Jan 8, 2008 3:23 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I don't think Skiles was forced to do anything.
I think he just screwed up.  He knew the status quo wouldn't take him where he wanted to go, so he chose to play the young guys, looking for a combination that might catch fire and lift the team up to the next level.  The problem was that all his screwing around brought the whole thing down.  It was a calculated risk that he miscalculated.

by alec on Jan 8, 2008 3:29 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Sam Smith rumbled
In a column last week that Skiles told him in the preseason that the team had regressed, the young players were not further along in development, and that nothing would be ready to start the season due to the inability to get the starters on the floor together in the preseason due to various injuries.

I didn't think Skiles was playing the kids early in the season because he had to or wanted to.  I think he was playing them because the starters/vets were playing so poorly.

Tyrus Thomas's 2nd Year improvement
Fellas, after doing a little research on ESPN.com, i've noticed a few noticeable statistics about TT's 2nd season.
  1.  Improvements:  Ty is averaging 1 point more per game and 1 more rebound per game, getting about 3 more minutes of playing time.  This shows that he's making plays when he's on the court. His assists have nearly doubled (.6 to 1.1) this season, which shows his offensive court awareness HAS improved. His turnovers have gone down, and assist to turnover ratio jumped from 0.4 to 1.1.  His FT% has improved 4%.
  2. Regressions:  Ty is shooting nearly 5% worse from the field and getting the line at a less frequent rate.  I think this has to do with his "settling" for mid range jumpers rather than taking it to the whole and getting fouled.  Ty rarely shot that 17 footer when he's a rookie.  Ty's blocks have also gone down, albeit minimally. (1.1 - 0.9).
  3.  General notes:  Its clear that Thomas is starting to see the whole court as evidenced by his improvement in assists.  He has put himself in better position to rebound the ball, and has cut back (minimally) on his fouls.  His turnovers have decreased with increased playing time, which is a solid sign.  His decrease in blocks and fg% is slightly alarming.  The fg% i think shows that he is trying to do too much when he is out there instead of taking what comes to him.  The block reduction seems to show his timing is slightly off right now.
  4.  Comparison to "THE BODY"  If given 33 minutes of P.T. TT would average around 12 points, 10 rebounds 1.8 blocks, 2.2 assists, and 1.5 steals.  He's only 21 and those numbers will improve.  THE BODY, already averaging 33 mpg, currently averages 4.5 points, 8.9 rebounds, 1.8 blocks, 2 assists, and 1.5 steals.  He is old, and those numbers will decrease.
Statistics are not everything, especially when you're only playing 16 minutes per game.  But can Boylan really defend that Thomas isn't, and won't continue to be a better all-around player than Wallace this season?

by davebino on Jan 8, 2008 4:10 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

What CAN Tyrus do?
Can Tyrus Thomas guard Emeka Okafor?
Can he guard Dwight Howard?
Can he guard Kevin Garnett?

Of these three, he's probably most suited for guarding Garnett.  Okafor and Howard are bruisers that bang away at your chest until you flinch.  Unless Tyrus adopted the "Andy Varejao school of falling over", there is no way he can guard Okafor or Howard.

There are few occasions when Tyrus will block shots from the player he is guarding.  Most of his blocks come off the help defense and swift defensive rotation.

Watch him tonight.  Pay close attention to his offense.  Watch him changing ends.  Because if there is one team in the NBA where a so called lazy Tyrus Thomas can look like the Road Runner it's against the Knicks.

by NBA Observer on Jan 8, 2008 4:21 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

who cares if he can guard Okafor?
and nobody can really guard Howard.

One day he'll handle LeBron James and take him out of a playoff series. um...that's my plan anyway.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Jan 8, 2008 4:28 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

It's true, Tyrus Thomas is not a true center..
I can't argue that Ty Thomas should be playing center when he clearly seems to be a SF/PF.  I also have a tough time watching Big Ben play center also.  Big Ben has been OWNED by dwight howard in the past, and who in the league can stop him anyways?  Thomas is more suited to guard the athletic 4's and 3's in the NBA, not the big strong centers.  That doesn't mean that he shouldn't be playing more minutes than Wallace.  Joe Smith, Noah, and Wallace can all guard and are more physically capable of guarding the center position.

by davebino on Jan 8, 2008 4:30 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Ben Wallace has limited Howard
Wallace did limit Howard in our first meeting.  Wallace has stopped Okafor three times this season.

I'm a little confused about the "Ben Wallace doesn't like to play center" line of thinking.  How is he not a center?  I guess that "I'm not a center" comes from Wallace, but maybe I don't know enough about the bigs and their defensive style to know who is the center out there.

Basically, when you argue that Thomas should get more minutes(which I agree) if they're going to come from Ben Wallace then someone will have to move over and guard the opponent that Wallace is guarding.  In many matchups around the NBA, I don't think Tyrus can perform this task.

by NBA Observer on Jan 8, 2008 4:35 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

again, I don't think stopping Okafor
is any great shakes.

I agree that Wallace does have a rare skill on this team, and that's being able to guard most centers one-on-one. But he also does a lot of 'roaming' as a defender, and Tyrus can do the same (hopefully keep his fouls at a Wallace-like rate).

But yes, as a defender on his man, Wallace is better than Thomas. Thomas is better at everything else, and to me it outweighs it in most matchups. I'm not really worried about the upcoming Bulls-Bobcats 7-game series.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Jan 8, 2008 4:43 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Dwight Howard?
Yes.  Okafor is a regular season nuisance and the Bobcats are a poor team anyway.

Dwight Howard is here to stay.  He's getting better.  But his primary weakness is his hands, around the basketball, trying to get close to the basket for a dunk.  He doesn't have Shaq's, in his prime, footwork and as such he bruises right into to get the space or get to the rim.  This opens him up to turnovers which a player like Wallace can force by himself or from the help defense getting finger tips on the ball.

Magic fans performed the analysis.  The longer Howard has the basketball the greater the tendency for him to turn it over.  The Magic are great when they run and Howard's touches are short, sweet, and followed by dunks.  In all other cases the Magic are an average team.

Matt: Do you think you would care about all the other reasons not to play Ben Wallace if he was scheduled to make 9, 8.5 and 8 mil over the next three seasons?

by NBA Observer on Jan 8, 2008 4:53 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think it's that important to argue it
since Wallace is a 5 and Tyrus is a 4.

And if the big concern is getting guys to match up with Dwight Howard, the Bulls can get in line.

last season Howard averaged 22 and 14 against the Big Ben and the Bulls, while averaging 17.5 and 12 against the rest of the league.  This season he "only" had 17 points and 22 rebounds against the bulls compared to his 22 and 15 avg against the rest of the league.  We have 2 other guys in Smith and Noah that CAN guard the center position with Tyrus playing PF.

The majority of blocks in general
come from help defense.  That's the nature of basketball.  Individual post defense is about positioning, not blocking shots.  So it doesn't make for much of a criticism.  And if you weren't trying to make it a criticism then what's the point of stating the obvious?

False
A good shot blocker knows how to establish proper defensive position to create the best chance to deny a shot from the player they are guarding.

When Mark Eaton was blocking shots, when Hakeen Olajuwon was blocking shots, when Bill Russell was blocking shots, these men were predominantly blocking the shots of the players they were guarding.

Most, if not close to all, of Tyrus' blocks will come during the scrap that follows a missed shot with Bulls opponents in the paint corralling the basketball.

Good grief
This is a good reminder why I usually avoid responding to your nonsense.  Your last two statments are simply a load of shit.

I think you mentioned 3 of the best shotblockers
by reputation in NBA history.  If Tyrus can't live to those standards, should we just write him off as a potentially great defensive player?  I would think you agree not.  Looking to the long term, I think Tyrus and Noah will both be able to bulk up and develop enough defensive awareness to make up for any differences in bulk to the players they are guarding.  Even in the short term, contributions from both would far outweigh whatever would be lost from giving up Wallace in a trade, which is what started this conversation I believe.

block reduction
1.1 down to .9, are you serious??  Hardly "alarming"

if you read what i said...
i said slightly alarming...it's not good to see a defensive player's blocks go down with increased playing time.  Coming out of college, I had never seen an athlete with the exceptional timing of shot blocks as TT.  That being said, it seems his timing this year is slightly off, which may be because of his inconsistent minutes or (hopefully not) his inability to understand the team's defense.

my bad
i saw that and immediately went to reply.  But i still dont think we have to worry about Tyrus's blocks.  1.1 down to .9 isn't even worth mentioning.  Alot of his blocks come in bunches which will come with the upcoming playing time.  my sincere apologies
