Noah's Scouting Report

http://sports.espn.go.com/broadband/video/videopage?videoId=3221659&categoryId=2459788

This was on ESPN on the scouting report for Noah.  They indicate like we all know that he's a smart player, but also say that his offensive game (while currently limited) has gobs of potential because of his skills.

They also mention his continued work on every play, his ability to pass the ball, and tap balls against the glass to make them rebounds (with video examples).....

I'm liking Noah even more after watching this....perhaps he can develop into something we didn't know we had offensively, especially if he remembers that he was fairly effective using the left hand last year when he tore his right rotator cuff.

Just thought I'd share this with you (the link above), it's brief, but was pretty informative from a scout's perspective.

Yeah I know
I was surprised by that, he does handle the ball well for a 7 footer, and passes very well too....I would think it has to be true.

It was very encouraging.

He's our future leader on this team.

Now if we can crack the Tyrus code we have a leader (which is our biggest hole now) and a future superstar (which Tyrus has all the athleticism to be and seems to in stretches have the skills to be, but doesn't have the ethic and maturity at least in the blips we've seen)....

I said at the start and I'll say it again, I think we got the steal of the draft, especially for a #9 pick....

Tyrus
Superstar potential indeed: When i was at the suns game, tyrus hit a couple of jumpers in such a way that he seemed like tall guard rather than an easily excitable power forward. Couple that with some images of Thomas bringing up the ball, he really does have the skill set to be a great player. He is no where near there, but if he actually focuses himself, man in a year or two he can be scary. IF he focuses himself...right now it seems like a big IF
im trying hard to become the next kirk hinrich, therefore im doing nothing more than being the next chris duhon.

TT needs more playing time so he can do this more

Poor Corey Brewer looks like he's afraid that TT is going to bring the basket down on him.  Haha.

whole hearted agreement
Was very surprised that there were so many negative reactions when he was picked.  Gotta remember, he was projected as possibly the top pick after his junior year.  There are no sure things, but I liked him so much I even had to like Florida against my beloved UCLA last year.  Now to get into TT's head.  If TT, Noah and Deng reach their potentials, the Bulls can outhop and outrun almost any team in the league.  Put in the 7 second offense w Thabo, Kirk and BG, and look out.
However, Boylan's plan w Wallace, Smith, Noc, Grif and Duhon is probably better.

Yeah
I'm surprised we're not starting a backcourt combo of Duhon and Griffin.....

I do like Joe Smith and Noc a lot, both are solid players, but I agree with our season going nowhere, why play them as much and hinder the development of the only guy on our team who has the athleticism and bits of talent that make him resemble future superstar potential (Tyrus).

At least a potential future all star (Noah) is getting some much needed and much deserved burn.

To the Point
I remember a story when he was drafted about playing point for his high school team.

I read
that he went through a growth spurt relatively late, and that - like Thomas - he began as more of a guard.

Nice Post
For all our frustrations about this season Noah is one of the few positives.  If we rewind to the draft who is really playing much better than Noah?  Ji is doing OK but you can argue that Noah may become the better player.  Horford seems solid and appears will be a star.  Durant is playing a ton of minutes and has shown flashes. Corey Brewer, Spencer Hawes, Jeff Green, Mike Conley Jr., all do not measure up to Noah so far.  Good pick Pax!

The biggest argument against drafting him
was that he did all of the things Wallace did.  I don't think anybody foresaw the huge drop off this year for Wallace.  So in retrospect, it's an even bigger bonus.  It's still early yet, too.  Some of those guys may develop.

i remember
the trib, especially rick morrisey, ripping this pick.  he said if noah turned out to be a good draft pick and good nba player,  he would take that article in the paper, cover it with salsa, and eat it.  no joke. hopefully, someone at the trib will make him follow through on it.  Goes to show you how little sports columnists' opinions really matter.  most of them are just a bunch of alarmists.  i hope noah continues to prove all the haters and doubters wrong and makes the first team all rookie

I think
that if Tyrus did the following things he would get more PT and become what we all know he can be.
  1. Always run the floor hard in transition.
  2. Keep working on that jumper. (it takes time, hes young, in a year he's gonna be knocking it down with reularity)
  3. Stay with your man more on D. Lock down your guy then help. He sags to much on D (cause he wants to stuff everyone) and his own guy ends up draining a jumper.
  4. Stay away from the 3 point line.
  5. Set numerous picks per possesion.
  6. Work on your endurance. looks sluggish to much after a few min of burn.
  7. Stay away from FOUL trouble.
  8. Limit your turnovers.
  9. Instead of always going 100 mph try and be more deceving with your speed and hops.
  10. Use a dam pump fake on that 15 footer and slash to the hoop.
  11. Stop trying to dunk on everyone. Id say he's about 50/50 right now with dunking on people and getting stuffed.
  12. Remind the coaches about back picks and alley oops.
Sorry for hijacking your Noah thread but Tryus has so much potential its almost scary but its sad to see this staff wasting it away.

NO hijacking
Any discussion of our awesome rookie, should include our other two guys from last year (Tyrus and Thabo).  Tyrus still plays like a rookie because he really hasn't had the PT of a second year guy and because he's only 21/22? maybe.

Thabo seems to finally be coming out of his shell and again looking like the good pick he looked to be last year.  Had he really had the offensive game we were lead to believe, I doubt that he would have fallen to us so late in the draft or that Philly would have been willing to trade him to us.....but still I'd take him over the offensively flashier Carney--best thing about carney is he share's my last name.

did you
just described "the Mike Sweetney" development plan up to point 10? Bulls gave up on Sweetney and didn't think he could accomplish this 12-point plan.  Interesting Sweetney is Tyrus plus 80 lbs. Both are 6'8" small PF.  Now imagine Tyrus reporting to training camp 08-09 weighting in at 250 lbs, reporting new muscle, with a new 4 inch vertical.  Never say Never!  Although, I think he is a very smart businessman, and you can bet that he'll play like an lean mean muscle machine all-star during his next contract year.  ;)

Slam Dunk anyone for 10K?

I couldn't resist offering my daily dose of ribbing of Tyrus.

by exult463 on Jan 31, 2008 3:43 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Sweetney was so disappointing
There was a guy who had all the inside skills we needed and a big frame to boot.  I know he was short, but he played inside like a much bigger guy.  He could score inside, and get some boards, and had natural skills.

But of course he could only play for 2-4 minute intervals because he was so freaking out of shape.

Tyrus is a far far far better athlete than Sweetney ever was (Even if Sweentey was thin, he wouldn't have Tyrus's athleticism), Tyrus also seems to be a better passer and defender--his jumping skills allow him to play bigger than he really is.

The differences (beside Sweetney's weight--I think Sweets was pushing the 280+ barrier all last season) is that Sweetney had more of an offensive game and Tyrus has a natural defensive oriented game.

Had Sweetney stayed in shape, he'd likely be in the league making at least $6-8M/yr because he had the skills to play in this league--now I guess had he gotten into shape only last yr, he might be closer to the $5M range because of the past.....but anyway.  A fit Sweetney would have come in and taken our Joe Smith role, and while overall Joe is a better player than the old Sweetney, who knows what might have been had MSweet been in condition.....Sweetney had the inside offensive game that we really lack (Joe Smith for all his skill is still more of a finesse big, who scores via the 15-20 ft jump shot, which makes him yet another jump shooter--although really our most consistent one this year).

I don't fully understand your Tyrus "ribbing" above, so I decided to complain on how disappointing Michael Sweetney was.....without the weight issues, Sweetney might have been a nice pickup for an 8th overall pick (Isiah would have yet again picked up a nice draftee, but it never happened and it is what it is).

by majoyenrac on Feb 1, 2008 6:03 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Tyrus receives
my ribbing for no special reason on his part, other than their is so much Tyrus love on Blogabulls.  Paxs Blew it!  Still I have yet to see any reason why Paxson's work with Portland to pick him 4th, and then traded the 2nd pick.

I believe Portland was set to pick Roy at number 4 (McMillian was crazy-in-love with Roy before the draft and was trying to hid this. He was successful. He knew Roy was the gem of the 2006 class.) anyway and got a bonus when Pax called crazy-in-love with Tyrus.  Portland then knew Roy would fall to their next pick because the Hawks GM was also crazy-in-love with Shelden? Shelden?.  Grand Slam Portland!

I believe Tyrus would have fallen like a lighting rod if the Bulls didn't make a move and would have been on the board at the time they picked (14-16) Carney (your namesake).

Still I really wish Tyrus well and hope he's successful.  Your're correct about Sweets, I could not understand what was going on in this guys head during his pre-contract and contract year?  Again I say Tyrus will be a monster when his extension is nearly up, he's also nothing like Sweets in this area.

by exult463 on Feb 1, 2008 1:28 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Oh I don't think
Tyrus would have fallen to the 14th or 16th slot, the guy was a monster in the NCAA tournament, and is still the most athletic of the bunch of his draft class....plus he had a very decent rookie season where all the analysts thought he'd be maybe the best of the bunch this year.

Managment has let us down by not investing the time and giving PT to Tyrus.

I never thought I'd say this, but I'm so fed up right now, I want the Lakers to win it all for at least this year and have 2 guys we had all the makings to get add up for another Laker dynasty.

I'm so fed up with Pax now, I want him fired.  I've been a strong supporter of him for how he turned us around, but there comes a point where everyone had seen we weren't title contenders (we may have been East contenders, but we wouldn't have stood a chance out West), and Pax knew our holes (leadership and inside scoring) and he's done nothing.

His coup to turn the franchise around was to make some trades with the league's worst GM (Isiah) now that that's over with he's done nothing.  THe PJ Brown expiring deal was his first MAJOR strike to use that for absolutely nothing.  Strike 2 was the Kobe trade stuff, making that all public and then when it didn't happen saying nothing was close (I'm sure it was a lot closer than we thought, but Pax didn't want to include Luol---of course the Lakers now will say it wasn't close to a deal, but that's a BS screen to get Laker fans reinvested in the organization and reinterested in their orgs Leader, Kobe).

The last strike was him not landing Gasol. Trade PJ Brown (whom several teams are still talking about and who I've learned was more than willing to sign and help the Bulls to be part of a trade--why not an easy paycheck, include Deng, or Gordon and Tyrus (who we don't play and who we're burying anyway) and that's easily a far better trade than what they got.  They'll have the cap space to resign Deng and/or Gordon....

That's a 3rd strike.

I'm not even mentioning the JR Smith for nothing (which does piss me off, I agree letting him go but why so quick and why for Eisley) or the Big Ben signing (Which did look good at the time and was also pushed by Reinsdorf apparently).

Sorry
I couldnt help myself. Thinking about Noah and Tyrus together playing 48 gets me all giddy. I wish the staff had the same vision i do..

And yes Thabo can ball and is balling as we speak.

again sorry for jacking up your diary!

It's interesting though
but a lot of us at BaB do lump them together - start thinking about 1 talented youngster, and the other's never behind.  However I'm not sure that, as a 4-5 combo, they're that terrific.  Neither is a primary post scorer, and they're both rather light.  I like them both, but what's the consensus - do you guys feel an interior of Noah/Thomas is feasible?

by Freethefro on Jan 30, 2008 6:17 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I think it's more feasible than a
Small Nocioni and even smaller for his position Ben Wallace (especially modern Fro).

So yes I think it's much more feasible than our current rotation.  Joe Smith would be a nice guy off the bench--and he can get us some solid points pretty consistently too, Noc needs to stay as a SF, and play partial minutes at the PF spot (not majority minutes).

Tyrus might only be 6'9" but he leaps higher than many 7 footers can jump and is very athletic and active (he seems to have potential to be an AK clone defensively in a few years).

Noah's jsut a smart player, and like we had when we had Tyson, Noah's a fast Center who can run the court, except Noah's a better ball handler, has better offensive tendencies, can pass, a smarter defender (blocks to Bulls players vs. out of bounds), but maybe not the rebounder that Tyson is (We'll have to see, and hardly right now the player Tyson is---but that's to be expected of a rookie).

by majoyenrac on Jan 31, 2008 7:51 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

The biggest
issue  Noah will face if he hopes to be a better scorer is his strength, both upper and lower body.  Its not for nothing that he didn't play Jefferson at all and one particularly telling possession against Doleac illustrates the point.

Noah got the ball on the left block and came across the lane to attempt that little jump hook Thorpe talked about.  He wasn't able to get any  position at all on Doleac who actually forced him further out from the rim.   Noah put up the shot and missed.  He isn't nearly strong enough to score consistently in the NBA right now and its debatable that he ever will be.   You'll also notice how ridiculously high his dribble is despite his PG pedigree.   Right now teams aren't contesting the lane on him but if is able to develop that shot further you'll see teams pinch down on that move across which is going to require  a further adjustment or he'll be a TO machine.

Noah is playing much more sharply than he was earlier in the year when he obviously wasn't sure where he was supposed  to stand on the floor.   He's moving directly to his  spots and not just sort of slide/skipping around.  Spacing on screens still isn't great.  He's getting too close on the screen often making it too easy  to get around him but that's correctable.

Im not sold on this offensive potential at all.   He'll score some but he isn't going to be the guy you throw it down to consistently.

Sucking chest wound? Bench Wallace and start Noah

Considering Noah
had a bad shoulder all summer and could do very little upper body strengthening I think he is doing dine. He will be able to do much more weight training this summer and get his upper body built up. He will be fine.

Its a lot more than
his shoulder problems this summer.  He needs to vastly increase his lower body and core strength, thats the first thing he'll need to be an effective post scorer.  He's no better off now in that respect than he was in college so the  questions will linger  I think until he's able to demonstrate otherwise.

He's 21 yrs. old,
and filthy rich. Of course he'll be fine.  Whether he will ever be able to develop into a reliable post scorer is a matter of some debate.

Like
isn't an issue.  Its simply  a matter of what he can be observed doing and what he cannot be observed doing.  If we're suggesting things that ought to be dealt with maybe you could put  that on your list.

Thanks
I will.  But chanting "he'll be fine" over and over doesn't change anything  either.  If  you'd like to add some actual observations
you've made that lead you to believe he can be a productive post scorer then please do.

Let's see.
It's his first year in the NBA so I'm willing to give him a couple of years to grow in the league before I say he can't be a productive post scorer. To say he will never be makes no sense.

By the way I don't chant.
