Open Game Thread #44: Bulls vs. Minnesota Timberwolves
[Thanks to wjb1942 for today's game preview. -Matt]
Everyone likes good news, right? Well, part of the good news for the Bulls is that tonight's game is the front half of a home-and-home against the NBA team with the worst record , the Minnesota Timberwolves. Just 8 and 35 on the season, 2 and 21 on the road, the Wolves have been struggling in the post-KG rebuilding era, as most expected. The other good news of late for the Bulls is that, in the absence of Luol Deng and Ben Gordon, Kirk Hinrich seems to have found some offense, averaging 26.7 points on 53.3% shooting over the past 3 games.
Now the bad news. For starters, the Bulls aren't very healthy right now. Lu will sit out again with the bad Achilles, and BG reportedly will be a game time decision but didn't sound too hopeful of playing tonight with that wrist sprain. Then there's C-Du's knee bruise: can't play with it, can't play without it. After giving it a go for a couple of games, Du has decided he came back too soon. Normally that wouldn't concern me much, but with the other injuries? How does A-Drain match up against the Wolves, anyway? And Joe Smith has knee issues of his own, although he is likely to play. [reportedly Joe Smith is out as well. -Matt]
Chicago is currently tied for 10th place in the East, but just a game out of the last playoff spot due to the equal mediocrity of the teams surrounding them in the standings. While the Bulls haven't exactly been lighting it up this season, they're coming off a particularly ugly four game stretch, with losses to the Grizzlies, Bobcats and Suns by an average margin of -12.7, with the lone win over the Indiana Pacers. In those four games, the Bulls shot 38.8% as a team (only 35.8% if you exclude the suddenly hot Kirk from that), while allowing their opponents to shoot 45.1%. While it's tempting to blame the offensive struggles on the injuries to Lu and BG, the Bulls have been offensively-challenged all year. In comparison, the Wolves have been hot over their last four, earning wins over Golden State, Phoenix and New Jersey, with only a 1-point loss to Boston at Boston to mar the streak.
In other words, this has got to be the worst possible time to face the Wolves. Accuscore has the Bulls with the win, based on their forecast of the Bulls shooting 45% tonight. Hey, it happened in the Indiana game, so stop your laughing. Seriously, this should be a much tougher game than the Wolves' overall record would indicate, and we're all much too aware of the Bulls' incredible ability to lose games this year. I'll be watching it and cheering the team on anyway, so here's to hoping for a big win in the last home game before a long road trip.

BG B in?
However, more so i thought if gordon was there the bulls would have won. I mean the suns arent known for thier defense, and especially in that third when hinrich was out, having someone who scores, not simply chucks (im looking at you noch) would have been nice. Ive always thought that when hinrich and gordon play good, this team cant be beat, and it has yet to happen this year. If gordon is here tonight, im hoping hinrich doesnt go into pass(ive) mode tonight and remembers his plus 30 games of late. Heres a nice article that i found online, i say this alot but...good read: http://bulls.realgm.com/articles/24/20080128/with_hinrich_back_on_track_bulls_can_do_some_damage/

If we lose to an eight win T-Wolves
Seriously.
I don't care if the entire team was playing with one leg. I don't care if our line-up consisted of Gray, Griffin, Nichols, Viktor, and Jameson. I don't care if we were coached by Tim Floyd's chubby little cankle. I don't care if Marcus Fizer came out of retirement and brought a gimpy J-Will on a mini-moped with him. There is no excuse for losing to this Minnesota club.
If, at any pont during tonight's game, we are losing by more than five, I will boo.

If Wallace were indeed benched
And I think McHale should get some slack for taking what looks like was the second best offer for KG. He turned down the best offer when he could have obtained the exact same package plus the #5 pick, missing his opportunity to pair his youngsters with a Noah. Al Jefferson is better than the Bulls impressive offer of Deng, Chandler, and Thomas, if that even was offered. I know you couldn't pry Al Jeff from Minnesota if you offered McHale that same package today. Just imagine what that team would be today had McHale not dealt Brandon Roy for Randy Foye.
Tonight is still a must-win game. A playoff appearance is not wasted if the young guys are able to develop into signficant contributors by season's end. That will be a different team than we see today and that we've been accustomed to seeing, and coupled with our existing core, or whatever assets they may bring in a trade, the Bulls could be a newly dangerous team come playoff time, if they can just get in.

Deja vu all over again
Coming into tonight, the T-wolves have just TWO road wins this year.
Last time I heard that stat from a team playing the Bulls in the UC, it was the Knicks....and we all know how well THAT turned out.
So that, coupled with the Wolves winning 3 of their last 4 -
Not to mention the Bulls being without almost their entire "core"...

noah...
finally, a bulls game i'd like to go out of my way to see... unfortunately i'm in atlanta this week so i'm relegated to watching the hawks/suns game... yippee.
i hope noah comes thru with 18/10, and thomas gets some solid minutes for a double double.
kirk's recent production is interesting in that it shows that he can be a scoring guard when needed, which brings into question gordon's importance to this team next year as a cap gobbling undersized defensive and dribbling liability at shooting guard (CGUDADLASG for short). in an ideal world, we could unload ben and ben for a player like kidd this year. kidd's making about $20m for 1.5 more years, but his production and leadership could get this team kickstarted again. this is not saying the nets would even want ben and ben... they already have a rebounding center who can't shoot free throws, and a shooting guard who doesn't give a damn.
go bulls.

The ref blew the call because he wasn't watching AG clear his feet.
In my notes I wrote if it would be good for players to talk to the refs about clearing their feet. Sometimes the clears are so quick it is very easy for the refs to miss it.

noc vs. deng - 3pt shot
noc:
2004 - 1.2/ 29%
2005 - 2.9/ 39%
2006 - 3.9/ 38%
2007 - 4.9/ 35%
deng:
2004 - 1.9/ 26%
2005 - 1.0/ 26%
2006 - 0.0/ 14%
2007 - 0.3/ 40%
deng is always commended for his good fg%, but he's a small forward that rarely steps outside the 3pt line. in the past 3 years, you would think that he would have expanded his range to make himself more valuable by being able to spread the defenses. it's actually the opposite in that it seems he has regressed. he is an above average slasher and jump shooter, but until he can step out beyong the 3pt line, his true value as a small forward (or even a slow shooting guard matt) will never be realized on a teamwide level.
am i saying that noc is better than deng? no, they are 2 different players that offer different skill sets at the 3. but i hardly think noc is deserving of the perpetual thrashing he tends to receive here. and if the deng supporters feel that noc is expendable, how about hearing an analysis on why deng can't shoot a three?
i would still like to see deng put on 25 lbs and become a back to the basket/ slashing power forward....

Boylan is a certifiable genius
One forward out? No worries. The sorcerer of suppression will play the three guard lineup with Noce at the four.
Two forwards out? No problem, the magic man delivers. He starts Noah and plays Wallace at the power forward slot fourteen minutes a quarter. If that fails, he reaches deep, so deep he goes all the way to eastern Europe to pull a Viktor out of his hat.
No Tyrus will play significant under this man's watchful eye.
If only he were equally creative in the other aspects of his coaching.

Kirk wasn't even guarding the 3pt attempt from Telfair in the final 18 minutes. I wonder if the coaches said something to Kirk or if knew to limit Jefferson and give Telfair brick attempts.
by NBA Observer on Jan 30, 2008 8:40 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
You gotta believe that in tonight's rematch
We've seen first-hand how hard it is for kids to come directly out of high school. It's got to be exponentially harder fora point guard. No matter how talented Telfair might be, he maynever be able to fill in that gap.
Plus, with Foye getting healthy, I'd think he'd become their primary ball handler. He was really an outstanding talent at 'Nova.
by alec on Jan 30, 2008 8:48 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Correct
Jefferson should touch the ball on 90% of their possessions. He has to score because he's worse than Elton Brand on defense.
A healthy Foye should help the Wolves, but Telfair is so bad you can't have him part of the 10 man rotation. He should be the 11th or 12th man off the bench. If you can trade him, do it.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Jan 30, 2008 9:57 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
We've already showered
The biggest thing I noticed about Tyrus last night was that he truly looked involved in the game, like he was playing with intention. He wasn't just wandering around the fringes with a glazed, what-do-I-do-now look on his face.
I think the addition of Mike Brown already has been huge for Thomas. Tyrus's biggest shortcoming (that he often seems clueless on the court) can be traced directly to the coaching staff--they don't seem to have had a clear idea what they want him to do. That being the case, how can we expect Tyrus to have a clear idea of what he should be doing?
I think Mike Brown will give Thomas specifics, upon which Tyrus will be able to focus, and about which he can then hold Tyrus accountable.
by alec on Jan 30, 2008 10:48 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
at least he didn't play the 3 last night
He started the game last night bricking 2 jumpers, but after that he was taking more shots near the basket. Even showed the spin move towards the basket.

by tyger1147 on Jan 30, 2008 10:59 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Mike Brown's first "Thomas Edict"
I think the Bulls should paint on a "Ten Foot Circle" in some sort of special paint that only shows up on their in-home game tapes. Then, when they go over the tapes with the team, they can fine Thomas for any shot he attempts outside the special TT Zone.

heh
If he developed some kind of lil 5-8 ft hook shot he'd be gold.
Ultimately, like you said, he will need to expand his game, but right now just work on the inside.
by ScottieCartwright on Jan 30, 2008 11:10 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
The sad truth
You're absolutely right. If Tyrus had any kind of back to the basket game (which I'm assuming he'd need in order to get off the li'l 5-8 foot hook you mention) all the Bulls low-post scoring problems would instantly evaporate.

Maybe this is just me,
Think about that. In an arena of world-class physical specimens, Tyrus stands above them all. To this humble observer, this would seem like a good starting point around which to construct his game.
If, as you say, Matt, he already has the rudiments of a back-to-the-basket game, I say hone it, because that's his meal ticket. I don't care if he has a 15 foot jumper. That's for old guys like Joe Smith and sub-par athletes like Luol Deng. Thomas needs to construct a dominating game around the basket. Anything that takes away from this is just diffusing his potential impact.
Someone in this organization has got to see that every second Tyrus stands around the three-point line with a bewildered look on his face is a wasted second.
by alec on Jan 30, 2008 12:37 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
More game notes
In the 2nd half, Tyrus had one offensive set where he rotates from the opposite baseline(here it was the right wing) to follow the passing basketball that is going to the left wing. On the baseline is where Tyrus is a great weapon. Tyrus moves down the baseline and when he sees the interior passing lane from beyond the 3pt arc(I think Thabo, maybe Kirk made the pass) Tyrus stopped, bent his knees, and flashed his hands calling for the ball. The pass was made and Tyrus took a two footed leap to dunk the ball and drew the foul.
I really don't think a defending 3 is going to snooze on Tyrus. Maybe Gerald Wallace because he likes to make highlight blocks. But most 3s are going to protect Tyrus when he roams that baseline. It's when Tyrus plays the 4 or 5(if opponent is small) that his talents will shine. In these cases, all you need is one guard to get dribble penetration off a perimeter screen set by Wallace/Gray/Smith that will draw the shot blocking big out of the paint forcing them to then guard the slashing guard. That should draw Tyrus' man over to cut off the paint creating the ideal vertical passing lane for an lob pass. Tyrus takes care of the rest.
Is this run in practice? It may already be on the scouting report, but if teams are scouting new stuff for the Bulls with the coaching shift then the scouts haven't seen plays run like this that are really set ups for Tyrus. If Tyrus' defender doesn't cheat over to challenge the slashing guard they can just finish at the rim.

Maybe it's that he looks so sad out
He plays a differnt style of bad defense than Noc. Where Noc is always caught wandering too far from his man then has to rush back, to late, to guard him efffectively, Viktor at least tries to stay near his man; he's just too slow to do it. Net effect, same result.
And on offense, where Noc is all bull in a china shop, Viktor seems a little crafty. I think Viktor, given even a few consistant minutes, would be at least as interesting as Noc to watch.
