Open Game Thread #42: Bulls vs Charlotte Bobcats - Midseason Grades Edition!!!
Luol, Duh out. Gordon likely out.
I have a bad feeling about this one. For one thing, the Bulls aren't good at playing basketball. Secondly...actually they're all just derivatives of the first thing. They won a game shorthanded, and I'm not liking the odds of winning two. But at the least knowing that it hinges on the likes of Thabo and Noah makes things interesting.
In honor of the second half of the season, I'll contribute my version of the time-honored ritual: grades.
(Here's John Jackson's assessment, which was the inspiration):
Kirk Hinrich - D: Just completely abysmal until recently. Being a 'shy' captain exemplifies lame demeanor of entire team.
Ben Gordon - C-minus: Extra points for not throwing a shit fit when asked to go to the bench for no reason. I know I threw one.Luol Deng - C: I'm hoping that his injuries explain away his lack of development as a player since last season. Although he seems willing to try some wrinkles in his game this year, so far it's not working. Like making layups.
Ben Wallace - F-minus-minus-minus-minus: Is no longer a dominant defensive rebounder, and whatever offense he once had has now completely disappeared, as 34.7% from the field, for an interior player, is a monumentally bad season. Bonus negative points for quitting on Skiles, and just quitting in most games. Even more negative points for being the pollster of the Bulls caucus.
Joe Smith - A: Joe Smith has ruled, and despite playing unreasonably heavy minutes, hasn't broken down. It'll be great if that's parlayed into a trade.
Andres Nocioni - C-plus: Probably could get a B, but watching him just pisses me off. Reading the constant glowing remarks about him makes things even worse.
Chris Duhon - F: I'll miss making fun of him when he's gone. To Greece.
Tyrus Thomas - C-plus: He's been completely misused, but that said, his per-minute numbers aren't as good as last year, either. Actually...nearly everything is except his FG%, and he's bizarrely missing dunks (jumper does look better) and committing goaltends. However, if it's a protest against his inept development structure, then A-plus.
Joakim Noah - A-plus: One of the best rookies in the league, one of the best players overall on the team. It's been known a while, but now it's getting re-told as if the veteran shenanigans actually spurred Noah on.
Thabo Sefolosha - C-minus: He's had a handful of good games, but has mostly been garbage this season, whether it was Skiles' fault or not. Negative points for being a test case against young players. (at least a case for those who group underperforming youngins with those who do perform, for no real reason)
Aaron Gray - B-minus: Good for a big, slow...did I mention big? Almost gets the same negative points Noc gets for unreasonable adoration.
Viktor Khryapa - A: No explanation needed.
Adrian Griffin - F: For every rolling hook shot Griffin takes, a baby panda gets decapitated. And he's a piece of crap for the Noah thing. And hypnotizing Pax into a 3-year guaranteed contract.
JamesOn Curry - P
Demetris Nichols - A: I think he had a foul in his minute of action. Nice work.Bonus grades that Jackson forgot:
Skiles - F
Boylan - F-minus-minus-minus-minus-minus-minus-minus: with more negative points for every postgame interview
Pax - incomplete: Not sure we have a GM
Matt - C-plus: outsourcing game previews, getting into fights with moron commenters, failing to update links section for quite a while. On the positive side, the righteous anger makes the words flow. And that stretch where I started booting out commenters was pretty fun and a boost to the site. (hmmmm)

Pretty much agree
With the exception
I think he's actually a solid player with his ball handling and passing.
The points will increase as his minutes increase.
He is smooth - and his court presence is better than just about anyone in the "core" group.
I'm sure there are debates soon to fly about this - but it's just my opinion.
It is NOT, nor do I STATE it as, the end all to what Thabo is.
...it is just my humble opinion.
The team really needs to win tonight.
I have an inkling that Tyrus and Noah will have good games.
Jesus H. Christ!
"I think the controversy maybe motivated him a little bit, spurred him on. Sometimes when you go through those things, when you get through it, you get out the other side of it, you're a little bit better than when you went in."
Does he ever have anything original or meaningful to say?
I hope they
Be nice if Lt. Kirk
yeah, he spent too much time
nothing wrong with his scoring
Yeah especially
Wouldn't it be great....
I'm going to puke
Comcast using the "Star Trek" theme for background music hyping Hinbrick's shooting performance the other night.
Ohhh, ba-ru-ther....
You're probably right
Ok, not looking so good so far.
TT on the bench
And Du comes in?
Nice to see Skiles...I mean...Boylan is still up to his assinine line ups...
ugh.
Boylan heard me
One of those GAMES
spend more time lifting weights.
First I heard of that
I do remember something about
He rehabbed all
But he didn't do things the way the Bulls
And he did NOT spend a great deal of time at the Berto Center.
Which is what I was saying if you read the post.
Sue....stop it already.
You just ate crow in the other post...you hungry again already?
I think he
It was Tyrus who did not spend time at the Berto. They have no idea what Tyrus did last summer other than what he said he did.
When I read THIS post
I WAS talking about TT - and somehow I missed that Noah was mentioned....(oh, oooops!)
My bad this time Sue - sorry for the confusion. :-)
All that time I was thinking "how could they not know about TT's issues...?"
And now it's clear what happened...(sigh)
Just goes to show how posts can get twisted around...
Did I SAY anything about HERE???
You always seem to need to prove someone wrong, but there's no need to look past your own mirror.
It has nothing to do with proving
Don't even have a dog
Maybe you should find a new catch phrase?
I am really glad to hear that.

Seems like the only time Wallace dunks anymore
How did they look?
That's too bad
Bulls play as usuall
Bobcats is a shittyy team and Bulls look even worse. What a looong season...
Yep
from perfection. Is he going to be just Dunking/Bloking guy???
I wish
a streak longer than two games
Definitely not a
Nice to see TT get a great dunk. I'm sure we'll see more of him in the second half.
Thabo had a good stretch
Make it even in third and kill them in fourth!
Thabo is playing better with each passing game
The rumor I saw
That was just awful,bad...
Hmmm
Sorry - that's what happens when you spend the day with kids I guess.
I think it's more like
I just wish Boylan would sit Wallace
yeah...seems like as of late
Bulls won last game depsite Boylan, and one can only hope that they can do it again.
Argh.
Wallace be singin' suprano tonight
Kerry Sayers said nothing is wrong with Smith
WTF???
For a "calming influence"
score about 78-79 tonight
...all around...
Yeah...
great D
Okafor just blew by BW and schooled him
Why does he do this?
That's funny
What happened to the play...
does he have
Ben Wallace
FFFFF!!!!
Boylan call time-out?
Red even just said
He doesn't score points, and the Bulls are down by 12.
So if WE see it...and RED sees it...
How does Boylan NOT see it?
the bulls still can't get a call
Yeah - now that the game is pretty much over
Boylan is SOOO F - ING clueless.
What makes absolutely NO SENSE whatsoever
So Why did Pax fire Skiles?
Same shit, different coach.
Maybe Pax wasn't just afraid for his job - maybe he was afraid he was gonna get pummeled by an angry mob of fans...
This is such BULL.
SHIT.
this team really

Sigh
1 - I can't believe this team sucks more than (fill in name of opponent)
2 - I can't believe I just spent 2 hours watching this when I could/should have been (fill in activity)
I'll just alternate between 1 and 2 for the rest of the season.
Smith and Thabo
Bulls have been within 10 and still able to catch up, but instead Boylan plays Wallace and....umm...NICHOLS??
Scroll up
He's been sitting on the bench
But if the Bulls say he's fine, I guess we have to believe them
if the Bulls say he's fine
But with Boylan - it would NOT surprise me to see him sit Smith....just because Boylan is Boylan.
Ya know?
For someone who
Wallace -21 tonight
Updated now
Oh, wait. I meant 1 & 2.
Skiles didn't
We need a REAL coach who can say to BW:"If you are not playing like you use to play,I'm gonna sit your fat ass."That's it.
Scottie Pippen was Very clear that he wants this job.I guess he sees what we all see here. It's so
obvious-play young guys!

And Nichols turns the ball over
in the word of savard
That is funny
If I braved the weather in Chicago tonight
I'd be pretty pissed.
What a debacle.
And the worst part is that the Bulls could TOTALLY have won this game, and SHOULD have.
Ugh.
you're absolutely right about that
Why didn't we hear any boos tonight?
by Azabullsfan on Jan 25, 2008 10:05 PM CST up reply actions
I heard some boos at the end
by bullshooter on Jan 25, 2008 10:11 PM CST up reply actions
I hope Pax did too...
by Azabullsfan on Jan 25, 2008 10:16 PM CST up reply actions
that blew chunks
A-Drain
Not to be an apologist
This wasn't as bad to watch as a couple of the early ones. Seeing that Noah and Thabo can play helps in that. Too bad Nichols didn't look good out there.
I want to hear what's behind
Was it due to injury or was it a rotation shift?
You were right
As far as TT goes....
Boylan is sure building up his resume,
Boylan can't even bring himself
I would give REAL MONEY to hear some media people ask him the REAL questions that we wanna hear, like:
Why did you leave Wallace in tonight?
Why are you so inconsistant with your line ups?
Why do you sit TT in the second half?
Why don't you just quit - the players have a stronger vote than you anyway?
I think he was trying not to cry
by bullshooter on Jan 25, 2008 10:09 PM CST up reply actions
I don't understand why
Well, that's the Kirk I know. The Bulls organization has shown an incredibly perplexing amount of loyalty to both Wallace and Hinrich and, though these are the two highest paid players on the team, this comes at a tremendous detriment to the progress of the franchise.
by messwiththebull on Jan 25, 2008 10:09 PM CST reply actions
Hinrich?
by bullshooter on Jan 25, 2008 10:10 PM CST up reply actions
tremendous detriment to the progress of the team
Probably would have
Yeah, but Lt. Kirk is gonna get demoted to Private
And I GOT your wink RIGHT HERE Sue.
You...you...you...KIRK lover you....
Tell it to your boy...
Wallace too...
Like someone said earlier - Hinbrick and Wall-ass are the highest paid players on the team, and the worst.
Sorry Sue hehehe :-)
I'll try to ease up a bit....
maybe... :-)
He had his best game

Someone tell Noc he needs to shoot more
by RogersPark Kris on Jan 25, 2008 10:11 PM CST reply actions
42 minutes, 9 rebounds
It's not even worth complaining about BW anymore. The Bulls know very well he's useless, but seem liek they are forced to playing him heavy minutes.
by RogersPark Kris on Jan 25, 2008 10:15 PM CST reply actions
perhaps there's a ...
Bulls sucks
I would imagine if Bulls get second Wallace from Detroit. They would vote every gameday who's gonna play on which position left consider each of W play 42 minutes.
Maybe
Blow this team up now Paxson
Jim Boylan is one dumb motherfucker
Oh, and please send Nichols back to the D-League.
NOAH SHOULD BE STARTING AND PLAYING 40 MINUTES
DO YOU THINK PAX IS TRYING TO DUMP THE CORPSE?
I am so angry I am not even going
Nothing to do but gear up for Sunday's game. Another futile, painful trip to the UC.
P.S.
by 1958ChiTown on Jan 25, 2008 11:38 PM CST up reply actions
Depressing - disgusted with Boylan
I have to think
Maybe the hope is to show that BW can still play a little bit, then dump him. If Ben gets moved to the bench then that's where he's going to stay. For the next two years.
by Freethefro on Jan 26, 2008 7:11 AM CST up reply actions
I also thought (hoped) that was what Boylan
Have to agree
Any team that watches him out there has to see the same crap we're seeing. We probably would have been better off just saying we wanted to "evaluate the kids" and putting him on the bench.
me too
cant take it
Every time I see Wallace getting torched on D or missing a 2 footer, every time I see Duhon's shot blocked, every time I see Griffin on the floor or Tyrus on the bench I want to start rooting for the other team. Taking a page from NVL, going to the game for me has become 48 minutes of intense booing.
Theorizing that Boylan is playing Big Ben to showcase him for a trade is giving him too much credit. He is a lousy coach and will be elsewhere next season. But back to Wallace: This loser is a coach- and team- killer with ego problems. Just ask Skiles and Flip Saunders. If he doesn't get enough attention, he pouts, doesn't play hard and weakens the whole team. For reasons that escape me, the Bulls coaches actually cater to him and that's why you see him on the floor for 42 minutes when he should be out there for 20.
Note to Boylan: BEN WALLACE IS KILLING THIS TEAM.
Detroit seems
I expect one or two significant deals to be made.

Why do I get the feeling
by RogersPark Kris on Jan 26, 2008 11:19 AM CST up reply actions
no tmac
Not to fan old flames here, but I am not convinced that Kobe stays a Laker for life. So, if we are going for the "big kill" at guard, maybe we wait that one out in the offseason.
If you hate Ben Wallace now for being ineffective and making a bunch of money, you will also be mad at McGrady. No way do I want him on the team.
by Stay Chisel on Jan 26, 2008 12:01 PM CST up reply actions
It has no chance of happening, I realize that.
by messwiththebull on Jan 27, 2008 1:47 AM CST up reply actions
This team won't even win 30 GAMES
I cannot think of a Bulls team coached worse than
Worst offense ever?
by El Toro de Goro on Jan 26, 2008 1:24 PM CST reply actions
that was particularly awful
So far my impression is: this team sure falls down a lot.

Take Noah out
Duhon
Griffin
Thabo
Thomas
Wallace

What if we do a
starting lineup
kirk
maggette
deng
odom
noah
Bench
Joe smith
TT
rad
thabo

addition by subtraction?
e-rob (buy out)
jamal crawford (give away)
e-curry (nobody significant..oh I forgot tyrus)
tyson (give away)
Next in line..
ben wallace ..
and if we accept your proposed trade
hughes (another buy out)
Paxson motto "it's better to give than to receive"
Give lots of money and bad contracts, give decent players away for crappy players, etc. I imagine now Paxson is now working on a deal to give Noah away for some old veteran like Kurt Thomas?
Therefore he now has a team that might win 32 games this year you can't build a championship team with this many mistakes? More less keep a GM position very long in the NBA with this resume?
Clevland
Varejao. Unless they need backup im not sure because i havent been following the cavs this year.
gooden too
Wallace verses Noah
I wonder if the Corpse has any idea of how he is
but he still pulls down
by fireskiles on Jan 26, 2008 7:31 PM CST up reply actions
Tyrus and others
Noah on the other hand, has been a joy to watch, and is not near as annoying as he was with Florida.
Noc' just amuses me... this guy might be the most selfish player in the league, when you consider his "defense" (flops and diving for steals which become opp layups) and shot-selection. Thank God he's white and therefore lovable.

A few wrinkles
Duhon and Smith may be back tomorrow but BG probably won't. He still can't use his shooting hand.
And this really sucks, the game was suppose to be on ABC but was changed to the Celtics/Magic game so there is no tv for the game. Not even NBALP, I checked and it doesn't show it. Now watch they will beat the Suns and we won't see it....ok maybe not.
My DirecTV
You know you're bad . . .
