Around SBN: Josh Hamilton's Unique Public Statement On His Addiction

Open Game Thread #42: Bulls vs Charlotte Bobcats - Midseason Grades Edition!!!

Luol, Duh out. Gordon likely out.

I have a bad feeling about this one. For one thing, the Bulls aren't good at playing basketball. Secondly...actually they're all just derivatives of the first thing. They won a game shorthanded, and I'm not liking the odds of winning two. But at the least knowing that it hinges on the likes of Thabo and Noah makes things interesting.

In honor of the second half of the season, I'll contribute my version of the time-honored ritual: grades.

Star-divide

(Here's John Jackson's assessment, which was the inspiration):

Kirk Hinrich - D: Just completely abysmal until recently. Being a 'shy' captain exemplifies lame demeanor of entire team.

Ben Gordon - C-minus: Extra points for not throwing a shit fit when asked to go to the bench for no reason. I know I threw one.

Luol Deng - C: I'm hoping that his injuries explain away his lack of development as a player since last season. Although he seems willing to try some wrinkles in his game this year, so far it's not working. Like making layups.

Ben Wallace - F-minus-minus-minus-minus: Is no longer a dominant defensive rebounder,  and whatever offense he once had has now completely disappeared, as 34.7% from the field, for an interior player, is a monumentally bad season. Bonus negative points for quitting on Skiles, and just quitting in most games. Even more negative points for being the pollster of the Bulls caucus.

Joe Smith - A: Joe Smith has ruled, and despite playing unreasonably heavy minutes, hasn't broken down. It'll be great if that's parlayed into a trade.

Andres Nocioni - C-plus: Probably could get a B, but watching him just pisses me off. Reading the constant glowing remarks about him makes things even worse.

Chris Duhon - F: I'll miss making fun of him when he's gone. To Greece.

Tyrus Thomas - C-plus: He's been completely misused, but that said, his per-minute numbers aren't as good as last year, either. Actually...nearly everything is except his FG%, and he's bizarrely missing dunks (jumper does look better) and committing goaltends. However, if it's a protest against his inept development structure, then A-plus.

Joakim Noah - A-plus: One of the best rookies in the league, one of the best players overall on the team. It's been known a while, but now it's getting re-told as if the veteran shenanigans actually spurred Noah on.

Thabo Sefolosha - C-minus: He's had a handful of good games, but has mostly been garbage this season, whether it was Skiles' fault or not. Negative points for being a test case against young players. (at least a case for those who group underperforming youngins with those who do perform, for no real reason)

Aaron Gray - B-minus: Good for a big, slow...did I mention big? Almost gets the same negative points Noc gets for unreasonable adoration.

Viktor Khryapa - A: No explanation needed.

Adrian Griffin - F: For every rolling hook shot Griffin takes, a baby panda gets decapitated. And he's a piece of crap for the Noah thing. And hypnotizing Pax into a 3-year guaranteed contract.

JamesOn Curry - P

Demetris Nichols - A: I think he had a foul in his minute of action. Nice work.

Bonus grades that Jackson forgot:

Skiles - F

Boylan - F-minus-minus-minus-minus-minus-minus-minus: with more negative points for every postgame interview

Pax - incomplete:  Not sure we have a GM

Matt - C-plus: outsourcing game previews, getting into fights with moron commenters, failing to update links section for quite a while. On the positive side, the righteous anger makes the words flow. And that stretch where I started booting out commenters was pretty fun and a boost to the site. (hmmmm)

With the exception
of Thabo's grade...
I think he's actually a solid player with his ball handling and passing.

The points will increase as his minutes increase.
He is smooth - and his court presence is better than just about anyone in the "core" group.

I'm sure there are debates soon to fly about this - but it's just my opinion.

It is NOT, nor do I STATE it as, the end all to what Thabo is.
...it is just my humble opinion.

The team really needs to win tonight.
They have to begin dominating the inferior opponents on their schedule if there is any hope of a playoff run.

I have an inkling that Tyrus and Noah will have good games.

Jesus H. Christ!
Jim Boylan's an idiot:
"He's rebounding the ball, playing with his energy," coach Jim Boylan said. "That's what he does. I don't think any sort of controversy is going to affect that.

"I think the controversy maybe motivated him a little bit, spurred him on. Sometimes when you go through those things, when you get through it, you get out the other side of it, you're a little bit better than when you went in."

Does he ever have anything original or meaningful to say?

Wouldn't it be great....
if the bulls actually used this turn-back-the-clock version of Joe Smith and made a nice mid-season trade?  Somehow I think they will take this renaissance and treat it like a revival, holding onto Joe Smith for dear life and running him into the ground.
Why don't you crack an egg of knowledge all over me, buddy.

-24 for the night.  No matter what intangibles he's supposedly bringing, the team is getting killed when he's on the floor.  I think most of us agree on that from watching the game, and the numbers support the appearance.  Dammit.

Oh, wait.  I meant 1 & 2.

This wasn't as bad to watch as a couple of the early ones. Seeing that Noah and Thabo can play helps in that. Too bad Nichols didn't look good out there.

Ben Wallace would get 42 minutes tonight while Joe Smith gets 10 and Tyrus 18.  Okafor was lighting him up like a Christmas tree, so it couldn't have been for his savvy, off the box score defense.

Well, that's the Kirk I know.  The Bulls organization has shown an incredibly perplexing amount of loyalty to both Wallace and Hinrich and, though these are the two highest paid players on the team, this comes at a tremendous detriment to the progress of the franchise.

Jim Boylan is one dumb motherfucker
I'll be stunned if he ever sniffs an NBA head coaching job after this season.  If he's going by the interim coach playbook of relying on your veterans to get wins and get the job permanently, he forgot the premise behind that approach - the veterans have to be able to still play!  Emeka Okafor got off like he was playing against his grandmother tonight.  I guess that shouldn't be surprising though, since Ben Wallace has the leaping ability of an average grandmother (and not LJ, unfortunately).

Oh, and please send Nichols back to the D-League.

Depressing - disgusted with Boylan
Boylan does not know how to manage match-ups and using the Corpse for 42 minutes is disgusting.  We need a top level coach who is experienced who has a plan and will not rely on the Corpse.  That said we are still in the playoff hunt even if part of me would like a good lottery pick for next year.

by chgobr on Jan 26, 2008 4:55 AM CST reply actions

I have to think
that Boylan (and Pax) are trying to raise BW trade value by hoping for one of those rare, 15+ 4 block performances.  And by "have to think" I mean if I didn't think it I would be very, very depressed.

Maybe the hope is to show that BW can still play a little bit, then dump him.  If Ben gets moved to the bench then that's where he's going to stay.  For the next two years.

by Freethefro on Jan 26, 2008 7:11 AM CST up reply actions

I also thought (hoped) that was what Boylan
was doing.  The corpse was badly outplayed last night by Okafor.  That pathetic performance might have cost us a possible trade to rid ourselves of him.  The corpse is a cancer on this team.

by chgobr on Jan 26, 2008 7:15 AM CST up reply actions

Have to agree
I've been holding on to the "they're playing Wallace in order to boost his trade value" hope for a while, but if I'm honest with myself it doesn't make a hell of a lot of sense.

Any team that watches him out there has to see the same crap we're seeing.  We probably would have been better off just saying we wanted to "evaluate the kids" and putting him on the bench.

by Sports2 on Jan 26, 2008 8:07 AM CST up reply actions

I think a "high ankle sprain" would boost his trade value more than seeing him play right now.

by bullshooter on Jan 26, 2008 9:11 AM CST up reply actions

cant take it
I am a season ticket holder.  If the Bulls do not make a real move by the trade deadline I will have to sell the rest of my tickets.  Following this current Bulls team is a waste.  I cannot continue to spend my money and time on something that makes me feel so bad.  I can take a loss, but what is going on is something else.  The team does not care and the coaching is atrocious.

Every time I see Wallace getting torched on D or missing a 2 footer, every time I see Duhon's shot blocked, every time I see Griffin on the floor or Tyrus on the bench I want to start rooting for the other team.  Taking a page from NVL, going to the game for me has become 48 minutes of intense booing.

Theorizing that Boylan is playing Big Ben to showcase him for a trade is giving him too much credit.  He is a lousy coach and will be elsewhere next season.  But back to Wallace:  This loser is a coach- and team- killer with ego problems.  Just ask Skiles and Flip Saunders.  If he doesn't get enough attention, he pouts, doesn't play hard and weakens the whole team.  For reasons that escape me, the Bulls coaches actually cater to him and that's why you see him on the floor for 42 minutes when he should be out there for 20.

Note to Boylan:  BEN WALLACE IS KILLING THIS TEAM.

by Stay Chisel on Jan 26, 2008 10:40 AM CST reply actions

Detroit seems
to have done pretty well w/out Wallace as well.  So much for weakening an Eastern Conference rival with that signing.

by No bull on Jan 26, 2008 12:18 PM CST up reply actions

I expect one or two significant deals to be made.
With the advent of the new core, at least with Thabo and Noah, there now seems to a surplus of assets on this team.  Would a Pau/McGrady combo, hopefully via moving Ben Wallace, make the team a contender in the East?  The obvious contracts to move are Wallace, Hinrich, and Noce.  If Pax can package a BG and/or Deng to move one of those, which is unlikely at this point, I hope he'd do it.  If Pax can net two superstars while still retaining Noah, Tyrus, and Thabo, I will consider it a resounding success.

by messwiththebull on Jan 26, 2008 11:05 AM CST reply actions

Why do I get the feeling
that the only Bull with any significant trade value right now is Joakim Noah?

by RogersPark Kris on Jan 26, 2008 11:19 AM CST up reply actions

no tmac
Why would the Bulls want T-Mac and Gasol?  If T-Mac and Yao didn't work, why would this combo?  You can only pencil McGrady in for 40 games a season.  Anything else is a bonus.  Plus, he is a playoff loser and makes a ton of money.  I'd rather take my chances with Kirk and Pau in the short term and then try to get some different help (maybe even through the draft) at one of the guard spots.

Not to fan old flames here, but I am not convinced that Kobe stays a Laker for life.  So, if we are going for the "big kill" at guard, maybe we wait that one out in the offseason.

If you hate Ben Wallace now for being ineffective and making a bunch of money, you will also be mad at McGrady.  No way do I want him on the team.

by tyrus4prez on Jan 26, 2008 12:11 PM CST up reply actions

It has no chance of happening, I realize that.
But T-Mac and Gasol in the East is different than T-Mac and Yao in the West.  I'd prefer not to have damaged goods like McGrady but would rather deal with him and his contract than Wallace's (assuming they're for the same remaining years).  I assume it would take something like a Deng and Wallace to get T-Mac, and that probably has no shot itself.  Then you to move some combo of BG, Kirk, and Noce, maybe via a three-team, to get a post-scoring PF like Gasol.  If you're going to be paying those dollars and those years anyway by keeping those non-All-Stars, and overpaying the other two to stay, I'd rather cast my lot with 28-year old quasi-superstars and the new core intact, with this year's draft pick hopefully used on a playmaking PG.  Just a pipe dream that probably can't mechanically be done.

by messwiththebull on Jan 27, 2008 1:47 AM CST up reply actions

This team won't even win 30 GAMES
They are done and have a tough road trip coming up. I expect them to lose to the Wolves two times in a row. THE BULLS STINK AND ARE PATHETIC, WHY DO WE EVEN ROOT FOR THEM? EVEN IF THEY MAKE THE PLAYOFFS THEY'LL BE BOUNCED BY BOSTON OR DETROIT IN THE FIRST ROUND. THE CORPSE was a bad signing, just like I thought at the time.

Odom's not quite the damaged goods we'd be able to obtain....It's been mentioned here previously, but if the Bulls believe Noah and Thomas could play 30 min each in the frontcourt, why not wallace for Larry Hughes straight up?

true,
but that's precisely why we could get him for Wallace, Hughes may or may not help, but ridding the team of Wallace would be a moumental addidtion by subtraction.....more minutes for Noah and hopefully Thomas; maybe I'm being naive, but I'd bet that Hughes would be much less cancerous than Wallace has proven to be.

jamal crawford (give away)

tyson (give away)

ben wallace ..

and if we accept your proposed trade
hughes (another buy out)

Paxson motto "it's better to give than to receive"
Give lots of money and bad contracts, give decent players away for crappy players, etc.  I imagine now Paxson is now working on a deal to give Noah away for some old veteran like Kurt Thomas?

Therefore he now has a team that might win 32 games this year you can't build a championship team with this many mistakes?  More less keep a GM position very long in the NBA with this resume?

the game is blacked out on FSAZ where I am in Iowa. I guess I'll have to listen from the Bulls site. Damn.
Yes, the game is on in Iowa.

Yeah I know
This really sucks.

I woke up early for this game too.

For nothing, just to listen to it on the radio as if I'm living in the 1940's

I started a
game thread for today in the diary section. It's nothing fancey but beats going through all of these posts each time.
