Open Game Thread #41: Bulls vs Indiana Pacers

Luol's out. Duh's still out. So it'll be a stretched-out guard/wing group. I'm also not quite sure we have a coach.

Nocioni will start at the 3, and I'd like Thabo getting some minutes sliding over to the 3 after Noc starts the game 0-5 from the field and Gordon checks in.

What I like less is Tyrus as Noc's backup, as although it's always pleasing to a depressed Bulls fan like myself to see him play, I feel Tyrus' best position is the 4. (where he can use his athleticism to an advantage, not just to be competent). If Boylan really wants to go nutty, play Tyrus and Khryapa together, with Tyrus playing the 3 on defense and the 4 on offense, keeping Veektor on the outside where he can dazzle us with his passing wizardry. There's also Nichols and (ugh) Griffin, but if it gets to that point I'd rather watch a misused (or just not ideally used) Tyrus.

Main strategic worry for this game, as pointed out by Mike McGraw, is defending the 3-point line. In case you haven't noticed, the Bulls are awful at defending the long ball (and not so hot at stopping penetration either, hmmm), and their offense sucks so it's hard to make up the quick deficits a hot-shooting Pacer team (with the freedom of not having to incorporate Jermaine O'Neal) could force.

The end of this month's schedule is favorable, but this Bulls team needs to beat its record win-streak of the season (2 games) for me to even worry about such things. And speaking of apathy: if you're not like me, who already got suckered into buying tickets (not for tonight's game though), but still a sucker enough to want to see the Bulls live, discounts can be had!

my season tickets to those games?

Yeah, um, I didn't think so.

I understand the motivation, but that irks me.

Bulls are so depressing right now
Hearing the news Deng will be out for a weeks (I'm thinking after the all-star break) makes me just want to turn to the NBA D-League (or Minnesota)if I want to watch a team develop....With that said this is great post. Reading this makes it sound like we are the second seed in the east.

BG
Ben Gordon might not play due to a wrist problem he picked up in the last game.

It's BG.
Remember he hurt his wrist the other night? He may not play tonight. When it rains it pours.

sour grapes?
It's depressing, considering people were talking about an outside chance for a Bulls finals appearance.  But such talk was before the emergence of the Celtics, so the Bulls in retrospect had no shot anyway.

BTW I remember all the skepticism on this blog about the Celts.  It just goes to show: the NBA is still a player's league, and it's still about talent; it's still a team sport--neither Allen, KG, or Pierce won anything before, but together they're great.

Anyway, I wish the Bulls would take the opportunity to make some bold moves.  1) convert BG to pg over the winter, 2) trade Hinrich while his value is still high. 3) trade Ben W to some team looking to make a finals run this year and needing to beef up their bigs (I know, salary issues).

Who is going to score with Ben and Lu out?

This is really a prelude to a trade, right? Ok, maybe not.

Right now, they are playing that "Where ... Happens" commercial on the jumbotron.

How to stop the 3 point barrage
Bulls are terrible at guarding the three, so I know what you are thinking, we should try playing a zone!

Bulls have a real  problem stopping dribble penetration from top of the key. And once we see someone drop down to help, that leaves his man wide open for a kick out three. That's what zone defense does best, forcing players to take alot of long jump shots. But this is ok, because I guarantee they would have a better change of getting a hand in someone's face if they were regulated to guarding their designated "zone" as oppose to their usual desperate lung from 8 feet away.

Side not: I fucking hate seeing that little gangster Jamaal Tinsley kill us every time, so how about we try playing some zone tonight!

The way I think
that's exactly why we should play one.

by BoxingHideout on Jan 23, 2008 7:54 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Gray would be too slow.
Matched with a center he is good, but with a small and faster opponent he'd likely get burned.  Especially if they are working the perimeter and not really posting up.  I like Gray, but I like him because we have someone to match up against big centers.  Pacers just are not playing any tonight.

Noah's gonna be good
especially when he puts on a little more muscle, and when he has another long, athletic player to get those tapped rebounds....

Very nice to see the youngsters playing well, and most importantly, being allowed to play through some mistakes.  It might have been because Duhon/Gordon were hurt, but when Thabo made some errors, Boylon stuck with him.  Very encouraging.

One final point.  I don't want to see Duhon again.  Ever.  Hinrich, Gordon, and Thabo should be our guards.  Most of us have felt this way at some point, but this was one of the first times we saw our hoped-for alternative in action.  In other words, we've got concrete evidence now: Duhon's gotta go.

And thank you Marionette for letting us know it was on national TV!

Boylan reads off Griffins crappy stats
and then goes on to say "what kind of man he is, always ready to answer the bell."  I'm glad Griffin answered the bell by going 2-8 w/ 3 boards and an assist.  What would not answering the bell have been?  Refusing to go out on the court?

by Bluelou on Jan 23, 2008 10:13 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Hold on there
the BW business isn't idiocy on Boylan's part - he's blowing smoke up Ben's ass, trying to keep him from pouting, making like everything copasetic with the big guy.  As encouraging as Noah's play was, Boylan knows that we need BW if we're going to make that playoff run that he keeps talking about - a run upon which his head-coaching career might hinge.  I doubt he actually believes Wallace played well - in fact he sat him in crunch time.

I agree with you totally, however, when it comes to being down on Boylan.  This team needs a legit coach with prior post-season success and a track record of developing young talent.  Not a lame duck coach whose career depends on scraping into the playoffs by depending on aging vets and flaming out against Boston.

Irony being we might actually MAKE the playoffs if we saw more of the youngsters....

Boylan is probably praising
Khryapa and Nichols right about now.

Holy shit. Jimmy's postgame press conference
was a joke.  A giant A-Drain ass kissing.  Including  where he decides to read Griff's stat line to the reporters to show how impressive he was, only to discover that Griff's stat line was a big pile of shit.  He also wouldn't even say Tyrus's name.  He praised every player that was on the floor for the 2nd quarter run, except Tyrus.  This is ridiclous.

by Scotter on Jan 23, 2008 10:14 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

it's ridiculous
that A-Drain's "incredible hands" are so rarely groping and grabbing on the court.
Fire Boylan!

ha!
I taped and watched the game in a little over an hour. So postgame was deemed expendable.

I was thinking it would go this way, although I was assuming it'd be KC leading the conversation. Boylan with the stat line! priceless. This franchise sucks soooo hard.

Boylan kills me...
The Bulls built their lead in the second quarter with a squad featuring Noah at center, Tyrus at the four(his natural position), Noce at the three, and Thabo/Kirk in the backcourt. Despite the success of that lineup, he NEVER USED IT AGAIN! It's reminiscent of the GS game, when he never used the Thabo/Gordon backcourt in the fourth quarter even though that duo had a very high plus minus until then. Most coaches go back to what works. Not Boylan.

And on to the Tyrus travesty. Prior to the game, I explicitly stated that Boylan was in love with that stupid three guard lineup plus Noce + center. Sure enough, the Bulls played the entire second half in that moronic aligment. To make matters worse, the three guard lineup kept AG on the floor! AG over Tyrus, despite the fact that the Bulls built their lead with TT on the court. TT had four and four in very few minutes, so you can't say he played poorly. He made one mistake.

It's odd, to say the least.

Most coaches go back to what works
Skiles didn't either.
That's why Boylan seems like nothing more than a Skiles lacky.

Their coaching style (lack of) and player hatred is identical

best white guy (born in the U.S.) in the NBA ...
is Kirk Hinrich. He is the cream of the crop among all those Caucasian-Americans who have played NCAA D1 or the NBA. Kaman is having a great year and M.Miller is a great shooter, but overall Hinrich is still the best!

He just owned Diener tonight; I'm glad he scored a career high because otherwise we would be talking about his turnovers (still too many late in the game!) It shouldnt be surprising that he plays so well at the 1 with a bigger 2-guard (Thabo) who can play defense and share in bringing the ball up.

This game is auspitious for several reasons,
but especially because the myth is dead that we need Gordon to score more than 70 points in a game.  We can now trade Gordon without any trepidation.  Just ask Hinrich.

Yikes
45% of the pole on CC went to Noc as the MVP for the first half of the season...

What IS this BB world coming to?

if you read the question
and I assume you are talking about the poll on ChicagoSports.com, it was "Who has been the best bull?"  Nothing about MVP.

45% of the pole on CC
Once again - the self rightous idiot steps on his own fingers.

How about if YOU read the statement, and tell me how CC would stand for Chicago Sports?

CC stands for ComCast, and yes - it WAS an MVP question.

Are you 12, or what?

just ignore bullshooter, i think he means well...but he just likes to hear himself talk...er I mean, see himself type.  At the end of the day, he really doesn't know what he's saying.

just ignore bullshooter
If he (she?) wasn't so hypocritical and self rightous, I wouldn't have a problem with that.

But anyone who slams other people for what THEY do or say, while acting like their own shit doesn't stink - that is uncalled for and deserves every bit of flak that gets thrown at them in return.

Actually the poll question
on Comcast never said MVP either. The question was who has been the best player on the Bulls so far this season and Noch won it hands down.
Yes, the game is on in Iowa.

by sue369 on Jan 25, 2008 10:36 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

have to disagree
the poll question DID say something about MVP.  It has since been changed, so it's unfortunate that we can't go back...but I just looked at it 2-3 days ago and it said first half of the season MVP.

by ScottieCartwright on Jan 25, 2008 11:32 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Then there must have
been two different questions. I took the poll right after the game while the post game show was on and no where were the words MVP. The one I took asked who had been the best player so far this season.
Yes, the game is on in Iowa.

Comcast never said MVP either
irst off Sue - I wasn't talking to you.
So if you're gonna jump into the middle of this - you should probably know what you're talking about, don't ya think?

FWIW - I have it RECORDED on Tivo - and it says: Who is the Bulls MVP for the first half of the season?

I really doubt there were two separate broadcasts.

I'm just going
to share this with you. Comcast and Chicagosports.com always have the same polls because they are owned by the same company.

Here's today's Chicagosports.com

http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/basketball/bulls/

Here is Comcast

http://chicago.comcastsportsnet.com/team-bulls.asp

They both had the same poll the other night too. The one on Chicagosports.com did not use the letters MVP.

Yes, the game is on in Iowa.

And no matter WHAT's on the website, what part of RECORDED don't you understand?

They do have the same
question on the website that is on the broadcast. That's how you vote is on the website. I do owe you an apology. I had it recorded and it did say MVP. So I'm sorry.
Yes, the game is on in Iowa.

Typical -
You come up with some lame-ass excuse for YOU totally missing what was said, by pushing the blame off to someone else.

There's nothing wrong with my typing.

He was more consistent
besides that three or four games where he wasn't playing well.  He is meeting expectations more or less.  Not the best player, but at least playing to where you'd expect him to be.

Not a lot of the other guys are meeting expectations which is why the poll went that way.  I think Smith got second on the poll.  He is playing above expectations IMO.  I don't think many people thought he'd do much more than Brown did for us but he's exceeded that by far.

Until Deng Comes Back
Hinrich
Thabo
Noce
Tyrus
Noah

Bench:
Gordon(minor injury, I think)
-------
-----
Smith/Wallace
Gray

It's really not that hard.  I agreed with someone who said mini-ball doesn't work, and the best lineup was, surprise surprise, the one including the two players drafted to share the starting backcourt(Gordon was always a wild card, off the bench and in the rotation).

Originally posted this in the wrong thread.. but
The thing about TT is maybe he will start earning more minutes from here.  His last good game was against Sac (14 pts, 9 reb, 3 blocks in 23 min).  After that his minutes decreased and now they are starting to increase again (though down to 11 from 18 in Mem).  In Memphis he got 2nd half minutes but was pulled in favor of Noah who was playing no better - and then got garbage time.

I was disappointed he didn't reenter the game, but I'd rather see him get a solid stint in the 2nd quarter each game than having erratic minutes.  And then when his play warrants it, to get another stint in the 2nd half.  I'm not saying he didn't deserve it today, especially since we were so shorthanded and our usually consistent Joe Smith was not playing well and he should have been playing instead of Griffin.

But yeah.  I hope to see more of him, but I'll be pleased at least for a little while just to see him get out there for a good chunk at a time without being immediately pulled.
