Some quick Bulls-Grizzle notes from inside the Memphis airport
- I thought it was pretty neat how the FedEx forum was in the middle of downtown. Especially in an afternoon game, there were plenty of places to go eat/drink (special thanks to Zack of 3ShadesofBlue for the recommendations) before and after the game. I'm not sure it would work that well in Chicago, as it's colder during basketball season, and people would just bitch about the lack of parking. The arena itself is very nice, not exactly small but certainly more intimate than the cavernous UC. They had the same in-game entertainment you'll see anywhere, with a special wrinkles including an in-house band inside the arena (not the concourse), and a T-Shirt gatling gun that shot a half-dozen shirts in 4 seconds.
- Bought tickets outside from an, er, independent ticket reseller. Sat about 20 rows up diagonally from the Bulls bench. Not close enough to hear them in the huddle or anything, and the game was so boring and they were behind the whole time, so it wasn't really conducive to that much interaction. I believe Thabo had some rah-rah stuff near the end, if that adds to your opinion of him. The breakout personality of the night was Tyrus Thomas:
- He not only was practicing dunks in the layup line (at the half he went way up after being physically lifted by Aaron Gray), he even came over to the Memphis line at halftime to tip in one of their shots.
- During one of the timeouts he was excitedly chatting up the bench, none of which didn't seem to happy about it, but weren't waving him off either.
- As the team came out on the court at the end of the Boyz II Men halftime show (yes, they were the halftime show. Sweet.) Tyrus pantomimed to 'End of the Road', and when the crowd applauded the concert he acknowledged the cheers as his own.
- All of the above almost made up for his missed dunks and yet another goaltend (a recent and weird trend for him). What I did learn is that he certainly doesn't seem down on himself.
- The comments in the game thread here made it seem like the place was empty, but it was actually better attended than I expected. I'm guessing it looked bad because the season ticket holders are on the lower level, and they were a lot of no-shows in that area. But the upper decks were pretty full. Tickets were well discounted and likely given away in a lot of spots, as MLK day seems like their signature game. Had pregame and halftime acknowledgements of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Bob Lanier, as well as a video tribute to Dr. King. (And did I mention Boyz II Men?)
- As suspected, Grizzlies fans do not like Pau Gasol (who they do like: Miller, Navarro, and Gay). He sure looked like crap during the game, which didn't help. One fan next to me kept saying they'd be happy to send him to Chicago, and that he earned the nickname of 'GassHole'. In the 2nd half when Pau was isolated with the ball, the fans collectively made a sound similar to what the UC sounds like when Wallace has the ball. I told Griz fans that we'd still be happy to take him, as he seems to have all the characteristics needed to be considered a Bull.
- As far as in game observations, Deng just didn't look right, and it seems that hurt or not, he never recognizes that in the worst starting lineup in the league, he's one of the few viable scoring options. As a group (per usual) the team missed way too many gimmees. In the first half the only good performance was Hinrich's first stint, and in general he seemed happy to be actually guarded by someone much smaller than him (Conley). Nocioni was abysmal in the first half, and I used his hot shooting in the 4th as evidence to try and sell Griz fans on his awesomeness. Between him and Gordon, the team was actually hitting plenty of shots in the 2nd half, but the defense fell apart. Like the Bulls, I was watching the ball during the many lob-dunks they gave up, so I'm not sure who exactly to blame. Just another collective suckfest, but at least I saw it a new place, or something.

Interesting details
When last I saw him warm up, he was sullenly taking jumper after jumper from the elbow prior to the Detroit game.
Good to hear that he appeared to be enthusiastic.
But, yeah, the team sucked.

I don't remember Tyrus taking jumpers
I do remember Aaron Gray taking a bunch of ten-footers from the baseline. At an abysmal percentage.

Memphis
It's too bad the parts of the game yesterday I saw were a waste, the Bulls again had no energy and just went through the motions. THey tried to make a little run to start the 3rd quarter, and I was thinking, oh good at least we'll try to play the second half, but then Deng missed that wide open layup that he should have dunked and the Grizzlies grabbed the board and gave it to JCN for that 3, effectively eliminating our momentum entirely....especially when I believe Miller scored quickly thereafter after a miss.
I would love to see Mike Miller on our team, I think while he's no star, he's probably a more consistent player than BG (I'm tired of Gordon's crap play to start the year), and he's got the height we need. Plus, I was shocked at how fast he was (he was gunning it down the court yesterday and looked quicker than any Bull)....I think give him a new system and he'd be better than his already decent (16 pts, almost 8 boards).
Gasol has been playing through the motions all year, and he definately did again yesterday....he cuold be a Chandler type (a talented big who's tired of the spot he's in, albeit the inverted Chandler--due to his lackluster D). I think he'd also regain his form after a trade......but who knows, he's not looking like the player he was pre and post injury last year, which seems to me makes me think he's unhappy at all the trade crap. We'll see if he sticks around there and isn't dealt how he plays on Feb 22....
I don't understand why we Bulls play hard some nights and then play ridiculously soft others, yesterday's game was pretty much a summary of our season.
I also don't understand why a team that has so much talent accross the board (Grizzlies) can be so bad. I know the D ain't great, but come on, they can run, shoot, and seem to have great talent accross the board (Conley, JCN at PG, Miller SG/SF, Gay/Warrick SF/PF, Gasol PF/C and even Milicic PF/C has gobs of talent if little heart, even with him as their weak spot, they should be much better than their record. I think Iavonni (spelled wrong I know) should already be on a hot seat.....
Oh well, very disappointing game for the Bulls. They had finally started to look fun again (Warriors and Pistons were at least fun games to watch, something that can't be said for 75% of our games this year, we played really hard in both of them and made some stupid mistakes (Boylan's continued use of Duh on Davis especially after Davis was on fire was the biggest), but we were energized and at least showed that we can play at a high level even in a loss....
Then yesterday was one of our now standard ho-hum games.
It's so disappointing given that the thing with this team going intot his year was our heart, and now we have none of that this year.
Let's break it all up. I wish Kirk could go (and of course Big Ben too), Kirk at least is only 27 and looks done this year. Ben Wallace was a great player for many years who has hit the wall.....but both should be out.

After Detroit's whoopfest, we moved from 21 to 18 in one night. After Memphis's suckfest, we moved from 18 to 21 in one night.
Memphis is 20, fyi.

ONLY KEEP NOAH, TYRUS, NOC, GORDON, THABO
The Core; Noah; Good young player who CARES unlike the corpse. Tyrus; Give him consistant minutes and he will produce, is still young and can defend well. Noc; Great team player very good shooter, winner. ;Gordon give him 70 million and 7 years, he will get 22 a game and can be converted to point guard. Thabo; good overall talent, great defender, team floor leader capable of being 1st team nba defense.
Get them out of here;
Ben Wallace; the corpse just doesn't care and play hard like he did with Detroit now that he has all of his $. His athletic skills are eroding and his Arms look nocticably smaller.
Hinrich; He is 27 years old not young any more. He isn't improving he is regressing. He pounds the air out of the dam ball, and doesn't make people around him better. I think this kid is not a winner in the NBA, he is just an average player, lets face the facts. Even Conley is sadly looking beter already.
Deng; HE IS A NICE TALENT BUT by no means a franchise type player. HE PLAYS WAY TOO SOFT FOR MY LIKING AND SHOOTS TOO MANY MID-RANGE JUMPSHOTS HE SHOULD DRIVE MORE. I feel that a player like him is easy to get in the draft, and he has reasonable trade value now. Trade him now, for A post threat, possibly GASOL.
PAXSON; YOU CREATED A DISASTER AND BLEW THE 04 AND 06 DRAFTS. YOU ALSO GAVE TYSON CHANDLER AWAY FOR NOTHING AND GAVE AN UNDERSIZED AGING HEADCASE 60 MILLION DOLLARS. PAX YOU'RE A DISGRACE, I THINK YOU'RE NOT HALF THE GM KRAUS WAS AND I HOPE YOU GET THE AX FROM JERRY REINSDORF.

Paxson seems to insight strong emotions in regards to his management of the team from some Bulls fans. How will his legacy eventually be told?
I also wonder if Boston fans felt this way appropriately 1 year ago today towards GM Danny A.? What is Boston's fans opinion now towards the Celtics? or the Red Sox, or the NE Patriots?
Remember the sappy Bulls cliche campaign a few years back "Anything can change in the blink of a eye" Well I think its time to bring back that campaign for the Bulls, Bears, Sox's and the Cubs.
Chicago sport teams suck at the present time! Less I forget ... "Happy 100th anniversary to the Chicago Cubs"

RE: Hinrich
I don't have a link or anything, but one thing I've learned around here is that it's generally accepted that PGs peak fairly late. Some one with more statistical accumen than I (a large group) could probably demonstrate this quantitatively.
I just think it may be a tad early to give up on Hinrich. Besides, with his contract he's eating a Snickers. (not going anywhere for a while?)

Just wondering,
4.6 points/game on 34.9% fg & 44.9% ft. 8.8 rbs in 32:17 min
34.9% for a center?
Even if he were still the Defensive Player of the Year I think we would have trouble winning with those mind-numbing statistics.

by tyrus4prez on Jan 22, 2008 3:28 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't look at it as Kirk
He's not an elite talent. And to exacerbate the problem, he's not really an ideal fit at any position.
Truthfully, hw's probably the definition of the perfect back-up. He can play more than one position pretty damnn well, and fhe does it with intensity.
by alec on Jan 22, 2008 5:20 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
See if you were to make that assesment last year
Maybe this back spasm thing is more serious then originally thought. Doubt its the fact he got married.
Something has to be up. Of all the players having down years, Hinrich is having the worst.

by Option27 on Jan 22, 2008 3:58 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I agree
PG's tend to look better when a team is winning and shooting well - hard to get assists when nobody can make a shot.
Kirk may not be top scoring PG or top PG altogether but he has had some good games after rough start and always put in effort on D with noted sucess, you can't shot down top scorers in NBA that often.
basically he's no all-star and needs to shoot better but he's not #1 problem for bulls

Fire PAX
- Trading Eddy Curry, great move (pretty much all downhill from here, so far)
- Getting Aldridge, giving him up for Ty2 and peanuts, could have bartered for more, Jarrett Jack or Outlaw, but we got Khryapa?
- Getting "The Corpse" albeit it is a good playoff strategy, IF YOU MAKE THE PLAYOFFS.....
- Getting rid of Ty1 (Who could help get to the playoffs, but would probably fumble the inbounds pass with two secs to go in double OT losing game seven of the first round)
- Tyson and LaMarcus starting is a better combination than Wallace and Tyrus
- Firing Skiles for being honest, this team is not built to win, he probably said this to Pax "You screwed this team up. look at what you did with all that you had! Be accountable for this mess! Go do some suicides!"
- Now if Pax trades Noah, or Ty2 for Gasol...he'd be admitting he screwed up. Then when either develops and Gasol fades away like Wallace, what are we gonna say then... FIRE PAX
