Open Game Thread #39: Bulls vs. Detroit Pistons

[Thanks to NittanyBull for the last-ditch game thread. I had someone scheduled but looks like it isn't up. Am I the only one just hoping that smilin' Jimmy Boylan finally sees that things are no better under his watch? I'm sick of hearing that myth. -Matt]

Game starts at 8:30 p.m.(30 minutes from this post). Since no else has posted one up, I thought I might as well.

I believe that Chicago has won all of their matchups(a whopping two games) against the Pistons, and lets hope they make it three.

What I'd like to see(what would you like to see?):

  • Noah & Thomas chiming 28 minutes combined.
  • Wallace to only have 25 minutes.
  • For the Bulls to win(man I'm just full of wit).
God I hate Detrioters.

Yeah, I worded it awkwardly.
I meant to say that, to me, Tyrus can never commit a foul.

Getting a third straight win
over Deet would seem highly unlikely, especially since Tyrus' contribution was critical in one victory, and there's no chance of something similar happening now, right?

Wondering and worrying.
These coaches always do this. They'll play a guy who missed practice/shoot around 40+, trying to get that win. Then he misses X games after...and the cycle continues.

Tyrus gets swatted
way too much for someone with that kind of athleticism.  He just doesn't understand basic basketball - head and shoulder fakes, using the rim to shield your man.  Even freaks like Amare and Shaq have to fake, fake - then explode.  Tyrus only knows "jump high dunk hard."  Either he's not being coached, or he's not listening.

by Freethefro on Jan 19, 2008 8:21 PM CST reply actions

Rather
watch that then a guy shooting airball layups like wallace.  True Tyrus would be better off if he learned how to use his body better to get those contact fouls and reduce getting blocked...but still, its better than the atlernative.

I think
a player demonstrating that he's developing actually helps his development.  This idea that poor and distracted play should get rewarded with more play stretches credulity.  He wont be getting a perfect opportunity so he can either make the best of what he gets or find another job.

Take a look
at Tyrus' game log this year and last.  Look at his production when he gets 20 minutes.  Look at his +/- ratings.  He has proven that when given minutes he can be productive.

It seems to me that when he gets consistent minutes, his play is not poor or distracted.  The poor or distracted play is a result of the inconsistent minutes.

He
has to be able TO KEEP  HIMSELF IN THE GAME.  If he can't be productive on the court for 20 minutes then thats his fault.  Not Skiles or Boylan or Pax or anybody but him.  Why can you guys  not process that??

If you're point is that he needs 20 minutes or more a night to play well then you might as  well kiss the guy good-bye.

Global warming? Bench Wallace and start Noah.

by Rusty LaRue on Jan 19, 2008 9:31 PM CST up reply actions

Why can you not process
the fact that when he gets minutes he plays well?  The whole point that everyone is trying to make to you is that he gets yanked to soon.  So he has a bad first 2 minutes... Gordon, Noc, Smith, etc. have never had a bad first 2 minutes off the bench?  The point is, they don't get yanked, they are given an opportunity to play through it.  Thomas is not... he gets to sit on the bench for 2 games.  You think its easy to play when you know if you screw up you may not get another chance in that game?

by Rusty LaRue on Jan 19, 2008 9:47 PM CST up reply actions

Wtf?
Obviously that is the dynamic of this team.  That is the problem.  What this boils down to is that for this team to be really good, Tyrus has to develop.  He is the only guy on the roster with the potential to be really special.  Maybe he won't be, but the Bulls are doing a shitty job of finding out.

Global warming? Bench Wallace and start Noah.

by Rusty LaRue on Jan 19, 2008 10:03 PM CST up reply actions

Yes
The reality that Thomas is on a much shorter leash than the veterans.  The reality that the Bulls are doing a crap job of developing their young guys.  That is the problem.

No one has sucked as much as Duhon and Wallace this year, but you don't see them getting yanked after 2 minutes.  But the young guys?  One mistake and you're out for the game.

by JeffD on Jan 19, 2008 10:11 PM CST up reply actions

Jesus-minny
Yes. He is on a shorter leash.  Rookies are on a shorter lease than veterans EXCEPT on teams that are clearly  rebuilding.  The Bulls aren't at that point  so of-fucking-course-the-rookies-are-going-to-have-to-prove-themselves.   You can't possibly be receiving this as new information.
Global warming? Bench Wallace and start Noah.

by Rusty LaRue on Jan 19, 2008 10:15 PM CST up reply actions

That's not true.
It's just not. Players who start get more minutes and more consistent minutes. It's a fact. When a guy starts, he's pretty much guaranteed 12 minutes a night almost no matter how bad he is doing.

See, the other thing that goes against your argument, well, the facts. How do these work?

Tyrus started and got a lot of minutes in the first five games. He had, arguably, the two best games of any Bull in the first five games. He also had a really shitty game, but still got 20 minutes (see how that works against your theory?). He had two "meh" games. About what you'd expect from a raw yet promising second-year player, no?

Then, in the sixth game, after a kickass game against Detroit, he only played 12 minutes. He wasn't playing well, but wasn't playing well. He got yanked for some reason in that game (someone should re-watch it) he got pulled. He probably didn't something really stupid. Then, he's no longer starting.

This is exactly where your argument fails. The first five games he had two of the best games of any Bulls player that early in the season. He also had bad games but still got the minutes. That's how starting works. Since then, he's played a lot less consistently and a lot less minutes. It has very little to do with his play except that he's given no slack. It's quite obvious to any discerning person, if he played more, his goods would outweigh his bads more often than not.

Let us prepare for glory! --Michael Redd

by tyger1147 on Jan 19, 2008 9:55 PM CST up reply actions

Then they went back to starting him
for another 5 games and he was "meh" again.  How does that fit in your story?
Nocioni-Khryapa in '08

by bullshooter on Jan 19, 2008 9:59 PM CST up reply actions

Meh?
A couple not so good games. One shitty game. No great games. But they weren't so 'meh'. Here's the stats in those games:

17.2 mpg
34% shoot
8/12 FT/FTA
11.16 /36
13.3 /36

Oh, and the team went 2-3. Basically, he needs to take better shots. Other than that, there's no argument he shouldn't be getting 20 minutes per game. If he were starting and getting 35 mpg, he'd be getting a double-double. So please, tell me how that's wrong. That includes his shitty game where he got yanked. I mean, that's only those five starting games. Those are his 'meh' averages.

He needs to start and get 25-30 mpg. It's a fact, Jack. Get over it.

what's your definition of "meh"
he didn't play well.  Increasing the minutes of inefficient players isn't going to help the bulls.

how do those numbers compare to Smith's and Noc's, the guys who are playing ahead of him?  If they are less efficient, then TT should ride the pine until his numbers get better.

Here is what you're missing
Thomas has not shown that he can produce at a consistent level. You guys keep  saying he played great last year in place of Deng but that is not the whole truth.   He played okay at times and like utter worthless shit at  other times.  Thats  just a fact.  So unless and until he is able to show the coaching staff that he can play through stupidity he isn't  going to  be given minutes unless  there is an injury.  Its too obvious

So you're on the record
now that tee-tee's on the same level as Deng, Noce, Smith, Gordon, and Hinrich.   You're saying that he's such a consistent guy that he gets minutes no matter what.   Right??  Even when the match-ups suck and even if we're in the penalty at the beginning of the second quarter we stick with tee-tee because he has such a long and rock solid history of consistent production that any blip in his+/- is sure  to be short lived.   So what if he spends 5 or six minutes a night with his head up his ass.  He's a proven commodity and thats just the price we pay for the awesome numbers  we can count on  night in and night out.

Okay. Got it.

actually have repeatedly giving reasons why he should play, not that he's great or anything but simply play and contribute which he has PROVEN he can do. Why not decrease some of BW minutes and Joe Smith's and play Tyrus?  What is the problem with that. Maybe he doesn't box out enough, or can't shoot as well as we'd like yet, or whatever, but he is still AT LEAST as good as the alternative and the team's future.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Jan 19, 2008 10:13 PM CST up reply actions

and
its not like they've had much success anyway.  Maybe having Joe Smith playing now will get them the 8th spot in a pretty terrible Eastern Conference in the playoffs...MAYBE...then get blown away in the first round.  By playing Tyrus and the other youngins more (not all of precious Joe Smiths minutes) at least the Bulls can A.) find out what they have in those guys and B.) allow them to learn in actual games, not just practice.  If it is at the expense of a few wins so what?

And.....

Where in the hell were you when Curry  and Chandler got handed minutes despite performance??   How well did that work out??  Please explain how that approach made those two more valuable to the team.  Are you honestly trying to make  the point that there isn't greater long-term value in tee-tee having to EARN the minutes he gets??

Sucking chest wound? Bench Wallace and start Noah

by Rusty LaRue on Jan 20, 2008 12:12 PM CST up reply actions

How are you not getting this
Joe Smith is old.  He has bad knees.  If he plays extended minutes, he gets worn out.  If he plays extended minutes over a long period of time, he gets worn out for a long period of time.  If he is worn out at the end of the year, he does us no good in the playoffs.

Do you not understand the concept of age?  Do you really not understand the concept of limiting the minutes of a veteran, even if he still plays well in those minutes?

by JeffD on Jan 20, 2008 12:17 PM CST up reply actions

Here's what you can do
you  can go back over the last two or three seasons that Smith has played and look at his mpg.  and compare it with his production.   Get back to me on that one.
Sucking chest wound? Bench Wallace and start Noah

by Rusty LaRue on Jan 20, 2008 12:39 PM CST up reply actions

by JeffD on Jan 20, 2008 1:23 PM CST up reply actions

He
is averaging 22 minutes a game this season which is well in his range and when you go back and look at game logs, even in years he was injured, there is no drop off in production late in the year.

If the Bulls either drop out of the playoff hunt or look like they're going to be a solid middle seed then you'll probably see his minutes decline a bit which is fine with me but there is no justification for limiting the minutes of one of your best players while the team is in the midst of trying to make a run to save the season.  There is no issue here at all.  You guys are making this one up

He's
not as good as Smith, I was arguing that he should get some of he and Wallace's minutes, not all of them.  Sorry I didn't convey that the way I wanted to. What I meant by "alternative" is that it's better to use a young and usefull player like Thomas rather than to just let him rot on the bench; and he IS a better player than Wallace.

by goldengod on Jan 19, 2008 10:11 PM CST up reply actions

Tyrus
also took advantage of an opportunity last year when Noc was out and when BW was out for a bit.  He started this year, but because Skiles wanted to shake up the lineup because of a lack of offense he sat him in favor of Noc who can at times shoot.  However, it really should have been BW who was benched but the Bulls have 60 million reasons not to bench him.  Tyrus' fate was sealed with that little quest for offense by Skiles.

by goldengod on Jan 19, 2008 9:31 PM CST up reply actions

TT is showing signs of rust
Given the amount of minutes he's been playing lately, that is understandable.

I like our energy
2 straight nights in 2 back to backs, I know yesterday was a tough loss, but we came out blazing and played hard, so that's all you can ask....

I wish we played Detroit and Miami every other night, we always get big efforts from this team against these 2 teams.

Why did the Thabo yr 2 have to wait this long, he's looking great of late, a little offensively challenged still, but just solid.  He's our starting SG/PG for the rest of the season if I was the coach, he can defend among the best, dribble, board, pass and occasionally shoot.....Maybe with Duh out we'll get our wish, although I hate seeing that injury.

WHY NO TYRUS????  I love seeing more Thabo and Noah, but Tyrus is a fun player to watch.

Nocioni's our team MVP, BTW all you Blogabull Noc haters....

Also, Noah's D of Rasheed a second ago was one of the only time Rasheed did his unstoppable fade shots that was stopped because of hte D.

I hope regardless of our record this year we continue to play hard like we have the last 3 games (I almost forgot about Miami because that looked like a video game matchup).

This team is fun again when they play hard, even if we're not championship contenders, this kind of energy proves we can be dangerous in any game.....

Max minutes that Thabo got in four games before injury was 13.

He got that two times. Two other times he got like 6 and 4.

Averaging like 8. After injury, averaging over 20.

There was no upward trend. You are full of shit. Look it up.

Noah plays, he produces.
and crazily, he was producing when he was getting limited minutes, and it kept up with more time!

I dunno, maybe in March the staff will find out that Tyrus can do the same. Then it'll look like it was 'earned', not given, and they get credit for easing him in. Or some bullshit.

Dear 1958
I did see that.   He played  decently.   Did you seem him execute that sweet turn around drop step??  Did you notice how he was able to hold the post against much bigger guys??   Did you see all the offensive sets they ran for him??

No you didn't.  Because those  are things he cannot do.  Upsets you terribly I know.   In some situations he can compete and contribute the window isn't nearly as wide as you  guys  wanna kid yourself into believing it is.  He is a veryyyy limited player.

We kicked the Pistons ass in the regular season last year  too and two years  before  that as well.  How many  playoff series have we taken from them lately??

by Bluelou on Jan 19, 2008 10:17 PM CST reply actions

Bullshooter...
I looked this up a couple of days ago.

Under Skiles, for the season, Thabo played just under 10 MPG. Under Boylan, he was playing less than that (like 6.5 MPG) before the Hinrich injury.

Now, I will be the first to admit that Thabo's Skiles MPG was inflated by garbage time and I haven't gone back to disaggregate meaningful minutes.

In any case, you are one of the most basketball savvy posters here, so you may very well have a point, but I don't see it in the minutes. JMO.

To me, Boylan was playing it conservative with the vets and got lucky when Hinrich went down. But again, I respect your opinion and maybe he would have played anyway.

1958Chitown you are absolutely right
Thabo is still on the bench if Hinrich doesn't get injured.  I'm really happy we won tonight but this highlights how screwed-up the coaching staff has been this season by not playing Thabo, Noah and TT.

by chgobr on Jan 19, 2008 10:25 PM CST up reply actions

I think the plan is to bring the young guys along
slowly.  I am glad that Thabo is getting the opportunity and more importantly taking advantage of the opportunity by playing at a high level consistently.  Noah is getting important minutes and will continue to get more I think.  TT has already gotten two chances.  I am pretty sure he will get another couple of chances unless he is a complete dickhead.  He just needs to take advantage when they call his number.  He didn't play particular well tonight, but he didn't do anything dumb either and they left him in for 6 minutes, which is a decent stint.  He'll get more because he earns it, which is the way it should be.  The bulls have more consistent guys ahead of him and earning the minutes will make TT better in the long run, and the bulls too.

Someone has got to acknowledge Nocioni.  He is getting Deng's numbers and he filling in for him.  Great job!

by BiNgO on Jan 19, 2008 10:18 PM CST reply actions

He crashes the boards almost every time
down the floor.  If we outrebound whoever we play, we can still jumpshoot more than the opponent and win due to second chance points. That and the fact he doesn't take a lot of shots, but he does get easy points in the paint or free throws could be really big for us.
Why don't you crack an egg of knowledge all over me, buddy.

Is hinrich playing injured, anyone know really? I read that he was sucking it up, but i wonder if its slumping again, or still injured. Anyway with duhon out that means we will get kirk and thabo on monday right? Hopefully kirk is not injured, yet if he is, do we get bg and thabo??? That would also be nice (with kirk coming off the bench instead). Man i am glad thabo is back on track, last year he was my favorite rookie on the bulls, and i was really hoping to see him make strides, i had lost hope with his prior poor play. I guess if something does go wrong with kirk, i can consider thabo my fav player on the bulls, huh, does this make me like the male version of sue? Intresting...sorry.

I thought he looked a little stiff at times
especially when he first came in - not as low on defense as normal, and I saw him wince going through screens a couple of times.

The big thing with a back, obviously, is how it's doing today after playing.  Hopefully he's really back, because I'd hate to see it turn into something like Deng's achilles where he can't go every so often.  (Mostly that's for the team, but I also happen to have both of them on my fantasy team so it doubly sucks!)
