Open Game Thread # 38: Bulls vs. Golden State Warriors

[Thanks to wjb1492 for today's game preview. If you want more, I was the 'A' in 'Q&A' over at GSoM. -Matt]

Honestly, I have no idea what to say about tonight.  I'm still feeling pretty mellow following the Bulls' humiliation of the Heat on Wednesday, which makes me want to say wonderful things about the team and its prospects for the rest of the season.  Yet, at the same time I find that I just can't let go of the early season misery, and I'm bracing myself for an eventual return to frustrated sarcasm.  That was the Heat, after all, while tonight is instead the high-octane Golden State Warriors, who average 108.5 points/game on offense.  Considering the Bulls can be decidedly offense-challenged (for recent evidence, just think back to that killer 10 point 3rd quarter against the Magic), our guys are likely going to need one of their sharper shooting nights to get the W.

Meanwhile, the off-court adventures continue, with JamesOn joining Joakim in the news.  I can't wait to see what Aaron Gray has up his sleeve, since it would appear to be his turn to make headlines.  Boylan's comparison of Joakim to a puppy reminded me of some conversation on Blogabull long ago about what breed of dog each of the players would be, but sadly (?) I couldn't find the thread.  Joakim definitely reminds me of my parents' lab, though.  (By the way, you'll all be pleased to know that our friends, the Pistons, have "good" rookies who know their place.  But I suppose that's a story for tomorrow night's game.)

Looks like Kirk is out again, so Thabo will hopefully have a third great game and make it impossible for Boylan to stick him back on the bench if Kirk ever gets healthy.  Deng and Noc are expected to play in spite of their respective boo-boos.  Hopefully the kids will get some run, since BW (aka Has-Ben, the Corpse, Ben Worthless) doesn't run at all lately and that lack of running could pose some issues with the Warriors.  (It was good to see he can still dunk, though.  It's always nice to know whether poor play is lack of interest or lack of ability.)

So, enjoy the game, all, and here's to hoping for a 2-game winning streak.

I heard earlier
that Kirk was a no go tonight.:-(  Man I hope his back heals soon. Hopefully Thabo's good play continues.

I liked Boylan's comparison of Joakim to a puppy.

I have no idea what to expect of this team for this game.

Yes, the game is on in Iowa.

hoping for a 2-game winning streak
Well, I for one would never have thunk before this season started that a 2-game win streak would be an honest hope (but one wish on a mile-long wish list)...

I second the notion though.   :-)

Posting live from
the UC. Noah was out an hour before the game working on post moves and shooting. The guy looks very hyped up to play. I hope he gets some good minutes tonight. The Warriors striped orange jumpsuit warmups are heinous. One of the Warriors (maybe Barnes - hard to tell from my angle) is doing a very complex jumprope routine to warm-up. That's all I got. Key info, I know. LOL.

Global warming? Bench Wallace and start Noah.

by Rusty LaRue on Jan 18, 2008 8:54 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I used to think the same way.
A couple weeks ago, Van Gundy kept repeating through a game that with the players the Bulls have, they need to run as much as possible.  If he could find a good offensive minded assistant, I'm sure JVG could devise a defense to get the Bulls running and back to the top in defensive efficiency.  To be fair, Van Gundy's teams have had an old Patrick Ewing, Yao Ming, and Tracy McGrady.  As much as I hate how slowly they played, there was no impetus for his teams to play at a faster pace.  When Ewing went down with an injury in the 2000 playoffs, he let Houston, Sprewell, and Camby run to the Finals.  The name mentioned most here that scares me is Carlisle.  He had players in Tinsley and Jermaine O'Neal who can play in the open court, but he still bogged them down.

I would take JVG over Boylan ANYDAY
At least he's a PROVEN coach, and I think he would actually be a breath of fresh air to the team.

by Bluelou on Jan 18, 2008 9:12 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Effective guard play
Kirk is out so there's less dribbling and more passes keeping everyone alert.

Maybe someone? Thabo? can run the offensive more, and the guards can interchange PG/SG duties throughout the games.

Also Gordon needs to focus on less dribbling and more on catch and shoot.  Gordon needs to develop a inside slash using high floaters & extended early release underhanded kiss shots off the backboard.

Gordon needs to reduce his use of excessive dribbing to find a rythmn putting up difficult outside shots and/or drives to the basket where he just elevates like a midget with two hands and places the ball into the hands of the taller post defended for a easy block and a no call.

Both Kirk and Ben layup timing is a bit off, both need to extend earlier(burst of speed), and release earlier before the defender can time the block.  If there was a combined statistic for guards on a team being blocked on drives, Kirk and Ben probably would win.

This really has little to do with their height? Rarely do you see other short guys like Nash or Chris Paul shots blocked as often.  But also, Nash can shoot with either hand, he's fearless  inside among shot blockers, and is crafty using either hand with a subtle delayed (2 speed) timing which throws off the shot blocker.

Actually Kirk inside drive was better in previous years and he had an effective floater which now seems to be non-existent?

Gordon and Kirk have not progressed in this part of their game as one would have expected?  These ("timid") guys don't appear to like the physical part of playing in the NBA.  In regards to driving to the basket, Duhon and Thabo have them both beat.

Gordon and Kirk have not progressed
I'll say again -

Duhon
Is getting abused like an old donkey.

Ellis is blowing by him and shooting over him. Then when he picks up jackson in transition, they go right down to the post. Duhon getting beat so badly is also causing defense to rotate to compensate leaving lanes for other cutters.

tonight
he was able to illustrate the boxing out thing very nicely in only three minutes.  Does BG need three minutes to show how good a shooter he is?  Does Noc need three minutes to show he is a bull in a china shop?  (Ok, Ben Wallace takes three minutes to get a rebound, but isn't everybody clamoring for him to play less?)

I don't think
there was 1 rebound that he would have gotten by boxing out.  They were all long rebounds.

Ben Gordon has never gone 3 minutes without showing how good a shooter he is?  (and 1 rebound every 3 minutes would be an improvement for Wallace)

I'm from Chicago. I live in West Lafayette, Indiana and go to Purdue. My roommates pay for basic basic cable, which is completely worthless (because I hate TV), but they're such fucking hillbillies I still have to chip in for the utilities because they like to watch Will and Grace, or whatever. So I don't get WGN-Local but I do get the inferior nat'l WGN which has fewer NBA games. And It doesn't have ESPN. And I have leaguepass but, guess what, the last couple games (e.g Bulls/Heat have been ESPN despite the bulls sucking it up.) Last year, I had ESPN but not WGN. I can't catch a break.

I do that.
I can get ESPN in crystal clear BW without sound on a station that shouldn't be coming in. I either turn the mute on and read the subtitles or turn the radio on.  Works fine for me.  I was doing that for a while tonight before I noticed that it was on CSN which I do get.  I thought it was only on ESPN tonight. At least I realized it sooner rather than later.

The Bulls radio feed doesn't work, So I'd have to listen to the Golden State feed... with a Delay in the video (so, I know whether a shot is going to fall before I see it). Which is frustrating, also. An all-around frustrating viewer experience.

observations
Duhon needs to sit tonight. I obviously don't have the plus minus in front of me at the uc, but I would almost bet my left nut that the plus minus for the thabo gordon backcourt is far better than the plus minus for the gordon duhon backcourt. Duhon is a defensive liability tonight and an offensive nullity.thabo should on the court. He is doing a great job.

Gordon still pounds it way too much and makes crap passes.

I guess I like the zone switchup, but the bulls did get fortunate because the wars missed a lot of open threes.

Period when both tyrus and noah were getting pinched under the baskets, allowing too many war rebounds.

More thabo, less duhon.

But I'm also pissed at Lu, Noah, and BW each missing 4 free throws.  Otherwise the shooting was good.

I think that no matter WHO the Bulls get for players - unless they replace Boylan too - it will still result in heartbreak losses like this one.

Coulda won...Shoulda won...
Deserved to win? I think so. I'm haunted by a late BG drive that (typically) parted GSW defense. I think it was lefty; I know it was on the left side....BDavis had just scored and the game was in the balance, but Ben missed the gimme.

I don't know if it would have been this close with Kirk healthy (sorry Sue). I'd sure like to see the rematch with Kirk for Du. NO DU PT!!!! It's not that he's bad; it's that he was physically overmatched against an Western Conference All-Star caliber PG. All VERY predictable.

But they say there are no moral victories. Did anyone else notice Noah w/his head buried in anguish? Then ESPN cut to Wallace with a towel on his head, looking quite carefree.

And yeah, Tyrus played poorly

In any case, it's pretty clear his confidence is gone. He is a shell of the player he was last year. He's been disheartened and ruined.

This season is basically over. Playing the veterans so we can have a .500 record in the remainder of our games is a boring, futile way to pass the time.

The thing is
as much as I don't like Duhon, it's not his fault necessarily if Boylan's the one throwing him in there for 34 minutes.  It's not that he's not trying.  He's just not good enough to warrant those minutes especially in last night's game where the matchup didn't favor him (not that many do).  Even though it's tough to argue with his 8:1 ast/to ratio... that's about all he does well.

by Jaina on Jan 19, 2008 11:33 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

As I said
that's the only stat that favors him. I was only defending him in the way that he was out there that long by Boylan's choice, not his own. I'm not a huge fan of the guy so I'd rather see him on the bench as I see him a detriment most of the time.

Oh yeah,
Any coach with a set would have immediately benched Ben Wallace after he shot that 3 in the 2nd quarter.  What the fuck was that?  That was worse than anything Tyrus Thomas has ever done in a game.  Was he trying to show everyone watching on national TV that he can do anything he wants as a Bull?

by Big D on Jan 19, 2008 2:14 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

What more needs to be seen?
Thabo is probably the best point guard on this team.  Start the guy, and then you can afford to start Gordon at the 2.  Whether it's from a lack of confidence or just a deferential nature, Thabo clearly has the "pass-first" mentality as the main ballhandler.  He can guard 2's on defense better than Kirk can.  At some point, if the Bulls actually intend to keep Gordon long-term, you have to start him with a big guard.  We already know what Kirk Hinrich is.  He's the Shane Battier of combo guards.

by messwiththebull on Jan 19, 2008 8:13 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Negative.
BG is not now and may never be a starting guard, simply because he is too clumsy, his hands are too small and he's too short.

He is playing his best role right now and his points confirm it - and it has been proven TWICE now since he did the same thing LAST time he came off the bench.

We have NOT seen what Kirk and Thabo will be like starting together, and I believe it would be a good fit.
And after all, isn't that why they got Thabo in the first place...to add some height and strength to the 2G position along with Kirk?

Just Frustrating
It's very frustrating watching this team not be able to put teams away, we have always lacked that killer instinct!!

Going all the way back to Game 6 of the '05 Playoffs when we built the double digit lead over Washington only to watch it and the season disappear.

Let's see some of the leads we have blown.

@Mil led by 12 in 2nd, lost by 6
LAC  led by 4 with mins to go, lost by 5 I believe
@Ind led by 16 in the 2nd, gave it away by halftime
Orl  led by double digits early, led by 4 with a min to go, lost in OT
Por  led by 14 in the 3rd, gone by the start of the 4th, lost in double OT
NY   led by 14 early in the 4th, led by 7 with 5 mins to go, once again lost the lead & the game
GS   led by 14 at one point, once again, rinse, repeat

If this team falls into the lottery, seeming more likely after each game, I hope out of the draft this year, we can find a closer, someone who will drive the dagger into the heart!!!

I believe Skiles is still on the payroll
and just coaching the team via the telephone...

NOTHING has changed...do him and Boylan sleep together or something?

Is it spring training yet?

At the game last night
The team stats were broken on the big board.  You couldn't see anything other than individual stats of the active players.  Oh well.  Not like that shows you +- anyway.

But from watching the game live, it was very evident how much better the Bulls rebounded with Noah on the floor.  He f'n boxes out.  How simple does it have to get?  He doesn't just claim a space and hope the ball falls into it.  He claims a space IN FRONT of an opponent, protects it, and then he goes and gets the basketball.

Thabo was highly effective.  The GSW offense appeared much weaker with Thabo's defense and limiting penetration than without Thabo.  We could have used Kirk out there tonight for defense.  The GSW guards play the entire game.  Baron Davis and Monta Ellis would check out for maybe 90 second breathers.

The officiating was terrible late.  It seemed fine in the first 3 quarters with some good and bad calls, but nullifying each other out as one would go our way and then one the GSW way.  But late it was terrible.  Everything seemed to go GSW's way.  The Joe Smith block was the worst one.  It was all ball and I could see that from a football field away.

The difference maker was the free throw line.  GSW made theirs.  We missed ours.  Noah and Wallace had to be 3 of 10 or 12 from the line.  Make our free throws and we're sitting on a 20 point lead instead of 14.  Make the free throws and we're not looking at a tie score with 3 minutes to go.

GSW looked slow, weak, and ripe for the killing in the 2nd quarter.  They couldn't wait for the half-time break.  It was here that Chicago should have gone to the kids and turned on the heat.  Increase defensive pressure and push the break.  RUN RUN RUN.  You beat these scoring teams by making them expend all their energy trying to slow the pace.  GSW just wants to hang around, keep it close, and then shift into high gear in the 4th quarter and pray they make their threes.  They did. And they won because of it.

NBA Observer help me!!
The almost 400 posts above, your post and my perception is that we play better when we get our young players involved.  Noah seems to have a high basketball IQ and Thabo had the best defense against Baron Davis.  What the hell is the Bulls brain-trust thinking?   I am in despair agreeing with the vast majority on this blog - why is Du playing almost 35 minutes including key crunch time minutes?  Surely Paxson/Boylan must see the same thing we see.  Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Those guys play at the end
because the end game is about execution.  You don't run somebody out of the gym in the final 2 minutes.  Duhon is good at running the offense.  Duhon played 35 minutes because Hinrich was out.

Duhon
Is he really that good at running the offense?  They lose with him in there (and without him).  The point is to give someone else a shot (Thabo) because Pax brought him in here to replace Duhon in the first place.  Being in the game and making mistakes and eventually learning from then is the only way guys like Thabo, Noah, and Tyrus are going to get better.    Playing it safe by playing Duhon used to work but now it's time to move on.  Either you play Thabo, Noah and Tyrus and they might suck or be great or even just OK and you know what you got, or you sit them down when the game matters and they will be guaranteed busts.  The latter seems to have been the trend with those 3, and in my eyes it's unacceptable at this point.

I think...
...there's an overemphasis on "knowing the plays" and "running the offense". The offense sucks, even with the guys who know what's going on.

Yeah but
I'd've rather seen Thabo get the extra minutes than Du.  Thabo played 28 min and Du 34 - if you switch those minutes you get Thabo in the game in the 3rd quarter when we needed his defense.

The key argument to play Duhon
Is when he is tasked with guarding a player that he can guard.  If that game situation is present, play Duhon.  He's more experienced and can set up the offense.

The key argument against playing him is when the matchup is beyond his potential.  Here, we need Thabo to come in for stops.  He can take away a weakness we give away with Duhon.  It won't happen every night, but it will vary depending on the opponent and therefore dictate who finishes at the PG.

He's also in there to be BG's valet
BG is in there for the offense, Du for ballhandling and defense.  And it'll change when Hinrich gets back.

What do you think?
Doesn't the Hinrich, Thabo, Gordon rotation look so much better than the Hinrich, Duhon, Gordon rotation?

Duhon should see fewer minutes when Kirk returns.  Hopefully Boylan isn't oblivious to the rate of return on playing time investment.

of course it does
and the idea that Du cost the bulls this game is wrong, too.  The gameflow tells the story.  In the third, the bulls extended the lead with Du in there and it wasn't until BG came in for Thabo that GS made their run.  Noc for BW also contributed as did Noah for Smith, but the bulls made a run when Thabo came back in.  When Du came back in midway through the 4th, the played + a few until Noc made those two bad plays.  The DuHate around here is way overblown and it usually way more important how aggressively BG plays than anything because he is the difference maker, both positively and negatively.

Give Thabo a chance to execute
at the end of games.  If he screws up you/he learn something.  If he surprises wonderful!  It is better than losing with Du.

"good" rookies who know their place
Well this might apply to the Bulls if the starters played and acted like starters.  Maybe if the veterans were actually role models for the rookies, this would apply.  Ben Worthless is hardly a role model.  The last thing I want is BW teaching Noah his bad playing habits.  If you look at last night's performance, it appears Noah is now learning how to miss FTs from Wallace.  Wallace is horrible and needs to go.  His afro is what keeps the velcro closed on the wallet of the Bulls.
