Open Game Thread #36: Bulls at Orlando Magic

The official mail-it-in preview:

Hinrich/Gordon have to play better, Deng has to be healthy, Tyrus/Noah have to play more, Wallace has to play less, some joke about whatever the players are voting on today, blah blah blah.

Just watch.

3 games out of the 7th seed.  5.5 games out of the 4th seed.  Just win baby.

Ben Wallace putting a Magic player on his ass one time tonight buys the Body one more week with me.

I believe I had that one
Lots of comments.  Although, I didn't predict the 3rd quarter stand up/sit down routine from Joe Smith and Ben Wallace.  It was a real laugher.

Look on the bright side
maybe Dwight Howard might actually eat Ben Wallace that dude is a monster.

"Ok, now FREEZE IT!"
"....Look at how Dwight Howard's shoulders are a good 2 feet over Wallace's head. He might eat him. Ok, now "ROLL IT!"

ha
This game:  I'm not going to let myself get mad with what the Bulls are doing or not doing on the court.  I am going to sit back and enjoy a young talented player who actually gets "it".

(Note:  If BW actaully is eaten tonight, do you think Dwight is going to spit out the fro?)

funny thing
about working for ESPN is you get to watch them put those things together during commercial breaks and you can see that Stacey really has no power over them "freezing it" or "rolling it" and its set up to do that beforehand.  Makes it really awkward to watch live.

No Hinrich
That's what Wayne sez. At least a picture of Wayne indicates he said it. Gordon superstition continues...

They're starting Duhon and Thabo?
That's got to be the most punchless backcourt in the league.  Will the Bulls score 10 points in the first quarter?

by Big D on Jan 15, 2008 5:59 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

so they're going to not have
Hinrich, Gordon, or Deng in the starting lineup.

I've set this game to record, but we'll see if it gets watched.

Looks like Du is going to play most of the night (unless Thabo sees some major action). Kirk is out with his back. :-(

A win would help a lot of things with this team.

Paxson is the problem
I believe Paxson is 100% responsible for the current hardships of this franchise.

-he let the players take over and run Skiles out of town. Skiles is a good coach and deserved better than that.

-he signed Wallace to a salary cap crippling contract which Wallace did not deserve. He is a terrible player with zero basketball fundementals who got franchise player money. Unexcusable.

-he waited too long on trade pieces like Hinrich, Gordon, and Deng, and draft picks. He overvalued them and now they are untradable because the secret is out: these players just aren't very good.

-he failed to aquire a center. He failed to aquire any low post scorer.

-he resigned Hinrich and Nocioni before he resigned Gordon and Deng. Hinrich and Nocioni are not very talented and they are inconsistent. Gordon and Deng at least are above average but Hinrich and Nocioni are, to put it bluntly, crappy NBA players.

-he took Noah and then expected him to all of a sudden accepept being role player, a 12th man. Unreasonable expectations from a player like Noah. Also, there was better talent available.

-he took Tyrus Thomas for no apparent reason other than "he's athletic let's draft him." Aldridge is twice the player now that Thomas will ever be.

by Triad88 on Jan 15, 2008 6:16 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

He also traded Chandler for PJ Brown
PJ Brown is out of the league. Go figure. Chandler is a hard worker, a defensive specialist, and you can never, ever question his effort. Wallace was supposed to be an upgrade? What was this idiot thinking?

by Triad88 on Jan 15, 2008 6:20 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Meh
I still think that Thomas and Noah are not getting the playing time like Aldridge to develop in the first place.  If Aldridge was on our team he'd be our 12th man and we'd never know if he was good either.

Sam Smith has spoken (again)
http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/fullcourtpress/2008/01/the-pre-game-lo.html
It's a few hours before the Bulls game with the Magic and I'm here early.

I'd heard Ben Wallace wanted it that way or he was going to suspend me. I'm expecting that  when the Bulls return home later this week, Ben will have made it clear he's suspending fans who boo or chant for Kobe.

He's starting to remind me of the Castro-like rebel from the great Woody Allen "Bananas" movie. They are the people's army until they overthrow the dictator and the rebel chief goes power mad. He demands everyone change their underwear four times a day. To make sure they do, he demands everyone wear their underwear on the outside.

For a guy who hates blogs and bloggers, he's actually pretty good at at.

by Big D on Jan 15, 2008 6:47 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Liked this part at the end
There was no truth to reports the players decided to suspend Noah again when learning about Hinrich and wondering if the stress from the Noah reaction might have affected Hinrich. No word on whether there was a team vote.

Actually, how's THIS for an idea:

Skiles got fired because he was getting tired of playing the line ups that PAX wanted and was bitching about it.

And now Boylan IS playing who Pax wants.
But it's only a matter of time before HE starts giving Pax enough shit to get fired too.

Or maybe Isiah put a curse on the team after Big-Mac-gate last year - he's always looked a little evil, you know.

Sure, it would be a public admission that Paxson was wrong, but who cares? Things can't get worse than this.

It might be buyout time
I really doubt they can trade Wallace, at least without taking back another terrible contract (which defeats the whole purpose of trading him).  If he's this bad now, how bad will he be in a year or two?  What separates good GM's from the bad ones is that the good ones are willing to admit a mistake and cut their losses.  That's what Pax needs to do here, because it just ain't working out.

by Big D on Jan 15, 2008 8:23 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

it just ain't working out
I think that Pax and Wallace are in a stand off...

Wallace doesn't want to be a Bull anymore, and is playing shitty on purpose in hopes that he can take a powder puff like Tim Thomas did.

But Pax is pissed, so he is MAKING him play regardless.

Problem is that EVERYONE loses.
And we fans have to watch it fester night after night.

That's be a double admission
You fire Skiles because (most notably) Wallace is dogging it, and then you turn around and fire Wallace?

LOL, maybe he'll call up Skiles and invite him back a la Billy Martin.

admission that he was wrong?  There's not much more public or wrong than that 3rd quarter.

At the end of the game, the team looked totally dejected!  So dejected that they forgot to display some class and congratulate the opposition.  They walked off the court like the Pistons did when the Bulls beat them in the playoffs. (Jordan era)The big difference being that Pistons team was good.  What a pathetic excuse for a team!

I think you missed Sue's point
The pros don't normally go out of there way to congratulate each other after a regular season game.  What happened with the Bulls/Pistons in '91 was disgusting because some of the Pistons walked off the court with about a minute left in the game.

When I first started following the Bulls,
back in Kirk's first season, I used to be more interested in his stat line for a game than whether it was a W or L for the team - and I hate that this team is playing so badly that I'm getting back to the point of watching stats more than the record.

Sad at is, when i first heard the score i was depressed, then when i heard hinrich didnt play the thing i fell back on was (laughing in my head) "without hinrich this team is worse"....its probably a point that could easily be proven wrong, but so long as i could think that, i still have some hope.....oh hope...what a horrid horrid thing.
im trying hard to become the next kirk hinrich, therefore im doing nothing more than being the next chris duhon.

Bench Wallace Now
Another gem of a performance for Big Ben!  4 points and 3 rebounds without any blocks or steals.

Duhon also lit it up tonight, shooting 33% from the floor, with 5 assists and 4 turnovers.

A winning NBA team cannot start players with these kinds of stats.  This team is not winning anything unless a big trade comes through.  Therefore, these games are completely pointless.  Play Thabo, Noah, Tyrus and Gray big minutes every game and let's see what we have.  We already know what we have in our starters (i.e., losers).

Noah played good, but ...
after finally watching him get some extended PT, I can see why he shouldn't be playing massive minutes yet. 1 second left on the shot clock, foul J.J Redick for 3 free throws! Weeeee.
I missed the first~half of the third quarter [started watching, and we were down 28], luckily. Extremely luckily.
Thabo played good, which is ... good? ... Joakim played ... Tyrus can sink the jumpshot. It looks pretty.
...
I'm sure something will happen to fix this. Eventually.

by Prevenge on Jan 15, 2008 9:15 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

bad noah play
but the shot clock expired.  The officials even had conflicting calls.  Baseline official had a violation.  The half court official had the foul.  They didn't conference as per the NBA rule and just went with the foul.

Yeah, but still,
there were a couple plays like that. One or two where he went for a dunk and got stripped/blocked, though when he converts, he converts.
It's not about what it did to the team in this game, because they were down by 20 with around 5 minutes to go. It's about what it could do if he does the same thing in another game.

Wow
http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/basketball/bulls/cs-080115chicagobullsorlandomagic,1, 4210710.story?coll=cs-home-headlines
Falling to 14-22 and hardly competitive, several Bulls players on the bench late seemed relatively indifferent to the result. It was perhaps a worse message than the events of the evening, which were discouraging as well.

Apparently it led to a dispute in the locker room as rookie Joakim Noah complained about the attitude on the bench and argued with veteran Ben Wallace. One witness said Luol Deng had to step between them to ease the tension.

What a fucked-up team.  Noah is 100% correct, though.

Seriously.
I sense that this may happen soon:
Team: "Hahaha! The other team is ahead by 30. Oh, that's rich."
Noah: "You *** **, we're supposed to actually be WINNING THE GAME! PLAY *** BASKETBALL!"
Team: "You're cursing. 3 game suspension now!"

...

Veterans: "We're old hands at the NBA, we don't care if we win or lose! As long as we get paid ..."
Let's have them vote what happens to the team for the rest of the year. We can go 14-68, get the first or second pick.

oh man, too tired for that gem
thank god Sam's on the road with this bunch.

For those interested, watched up until the first half of the 3rd quarter. Then fast forwarded until Noah came in, slowed a bit and then stopped when Tyrus came in for that one play where he took a dumb jump-shot (but eh, I would too after sitting through that garbage)

Then saw he was out to start the 4th and shut it off. I hope Veektor proved his mettle. Bulls fever!

You missed the laughing part
It was in the last two minutes of the third quarter, while the Bulls were getting absolutely hammered.  Comcast showed a glimpse of Wallace and Joe Smith yukking it up on the bench (and of course, none of the shitty Bulls announcers commented on it).

by Big D on Jan 16, 2008 12:25 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

it's not that bad in isolation. But after the taking 'ownership of the team' fiasco into consideration, makes that whole thing seem worse.

It would be one thing if it was just one game
Even good teams have a few embarrassing losses in a season (like the Pistons against the Knicks the other night), so I can understand laughing off a loss like that.  When you're getting blown out night after night like the Bulls are, though, you probably should at least pretend to be upset about it.
