Official predictions 'round the web thread

UPDATE6 (10/30): Dead Tree editions

UPDATE5 (10/26): More previews are coming in daily. Are you not entertained?

UPDATE4 (10/24): This is still updating, btw.

UPDATE4 (10/14): 3 more, with one that's especially good.

UPDATE3 (10/11): Several more, including the two from NBABlogPreviews.

UPDATE2 (10/8): Found three more.

UPDATE: Inspired by Stein. I figure these predictions don't need their own thread for each publication. So just stick 'em here where you find 'em.

http://dberri.wordpress.com/2007/09/26/the-return-of-the-bulls/

To me, Berri's work never passes the laugh test, so I never bothered to learn how Wages of Wins works. But I do know it highly values rebounders and devalues 'volume' shooters. So Lots o' Love for Tyrus Thomas and not so much for Ben Gordon (whose improvement makes him 'average').

Berri uses efficiency differential to determine that while the Bulls may have gotten only 2 more wins from last season from the first 'breakout' year of '04-'05, the Bulls were pretty lucky in '04-'05 and by efficiency metrics are now a far better team, even likely the best in the East.

And in yet another preview, the Sporting News reportedly has the Bulls making the NBA Finals.

Great Stuff
On the front court:
What might make Chicago fans excited - at least if "potential" is your thing (and I argued earlier in the week it shouldn't be, so I am not being consistent here) - is the acquisition of both Thomas and Noah.  Each player came as part of the Eddy Curry trade.  Given the poor performance of Curry in his career, having either one of these players would be a bit of a steal.  Getting both is grand larceny (or some such term meaning more than a bit of a steal).

Monopoly
Too bad those monopoly "Get Out of Jail Free" cards don't apply to real life, or this might have netted us the perenially, and inexplicably, untouchable David Lee.  Or at least 4 future unprotected first round draft picks.

Ok, is it just me
Or or our Bulls gettin' a grip of Hype lately. Everything I read here has someone saying "So and so predicts the Bulls in the Finals".

Don't get me wrong, I kinda agree but it seems as if EVERYONE has jumped on the bandwagon.

Only Marc Stein has the Celts goin the distance. Everyone else has the Bulls goin the distance with the Celts just gettin a lot better

by Option27 on Sep 27, 2007 1:15 PM CDT up reply actions

It's the inevitable...
It's the inevitable "I need to be different" urge that most people, especially writers, have. They're only judged on their content that day and if the popular sentiment is the Celtics trade makes them the favorite then a few guys will change it up. Some will say "Look at the Bulls" others will say "Miami still has Shaq and Wade" and still others will say "LeBron did it last year, he can do it again" and the cycle starts again with everyone picking a side then changing it up just to do so.

by CubFan81 on Sep 27, 2007 1:39 PM CDT up reply actions

After reading the article, he didn't even
use his dubious metric for predicting wins.  He just quoted last season's expected wins and rounded down to 54 instead of 55.

by Scotter on Sep 27, 2007 2:58 PM CDT up reply actions

I didn't go to WoW
I guess I'm better off. There's a Berri-is-full-of-crap study coming out soon, so I'll save myself from win scores until then.

by hscs on Sep 27, 2007 3:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Last year Berri predicted 64 wins for the Bulls
with his formulas.  He admitted that was unlikely, but 64 is what the formula said.  54 wins is in the ball park  this time.  The Bulls expected win total last year was 55 wins and I expect a little improvement beyond that.  I would guess that 55-58 wins are likely.  At least I have my 49.4 win prediction for last year, thanks to the power of simple addition, Dean Oliver's PW and PL, and mostly luck.  At this point all the stat systems are much better at describing the past than predicting the future.

by Scotter on Sep 27, 2007 1:10 PM CDT reply actions

A gem from Berri,
"I would let Gordon walk. There is no way he is worth what his scoring demands on the current NBA market."

It's stuff like this that gets Berri in trouble.  When he takes his theories too far, rather than recognizing their limitations.  Letting Gordon walk would be idiotic.  Even if scoring is over valued to the extent Berri says it is.  That still means that many teams over value scoring so Gordon should at least be signed for a future trade to one of those teams that over value scoring.

by Scotter on Sep 27, 2007 5:56 PM CDT reply actions

Is it really so crazy?
I saw that as well and initially balked. But, after thinking about it some, is it really so crazy? When discussing possible trades last year involving KG or Gasol, many fans recognized that one of our Big Three (Kirk, Deng, BG) might have to be included and Gordon was always the consensus pick. Pax is universally loved by Bulls fans, and I could see him cashing in some of those goodwill chips if need be and letting Gordon walk. Don't get me wrong, I'd hate to see Gordon go, but if Pax thinks the price is too high, I could see him doing it. Different situation, but the here in DC the Wiz did the same thing in letting (a way over-valued!) Larry Hughes walk and they look pretty damn smart for it.

by Old Skool Sloan on Sep 28, 2007 8:35 AM CDT up reply actions

Berri is saying lose him for nothing
which is insane. Most fans are dumber/crazier than Berri, and Larry Hughes isn't a good comparison. Hughes had two fluke seasons for the Wiz, and was a 7 year veteran with a history of injuries when he was signed by Cleveland. The value of scoring aside, Gordon blows Hughes' career scoring numbers out of the water.

by hscs on Sep 28, 2007 9:49 AM CDT up reply actions

I said the in my comment that the crazy
part is letting Gordon go for nothing.  The Bulls spent 3 years investing in Gordon as he improved from being compared to Vinnie Johnson to being compared to Ray Allen.

The Hughes contract was a joke and I think the Cavs even knew it.  Hughes had his 1st and only good season in his free agent year and has only played in more than 73 games once.  The Cavs were desperate to find a "Scottie Pippen" so James would resign and made a dumb decision.  Not resigning Hughes was simply an obvious decision.  Signing Antonio Daniels was the really smart decision, along with getting the Lakers to give up Butler for Brown.

Marc Stein
Has his first edition of weekly power rankings up.

Bulls are 10th, and 4th in the East behind Boston (2nd overall), Detroit (5), and Cleveland (7)

There's a lot of inconsistencies. It's all pretty bad actually.

The Bulls are on the short list of favorites to win the East, but you have to wonder -- given their inability to trade for KG or Pau -- how much they're second-guessing themselves for letting Tyson Chandler go.

huh?

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Oct 1, 2007 11:30 AM CDT reply actions

on Boston
Sobering fact: No team with three 20-point scorers has ever won it all.

Even more soberinger: It's impossible to come up with a more meaningless stat and fact combination.

by hscs on Oct 1, 2007 12:10 PM CDT up reply actions

yeesh, Stein should be ashamed
The Bucks were busier than most teams over the summer and spent a lot more than they usually do. So Sen. Kohl will inevitably demand big things from the team GM Larry Harris has assembled, starting with the Big Yi.

The Bucks were like 10 or 15 million below the minimum total payroll when 06-07 ended. They had to spend a lot more than they usually do.

However, I give Stein the minimal amount of credit for not using the term "baby Bulls."

Talk about
An irrational ranking:

"3. Miami Heat - Shaquille O'Neal and Dwyane Wade tasted the sweet smell of success two years ago and have the tools to get back to the NBA finals. With Alonzo Mourning leaving after this season, an aging Shaq gets one last real chance at another title before he's done."

So why are they going to be better than the team that swept them last year?  Addition by Kapono subtraction?  Wade playing left handed?  It's ludicrous, and I shouldn't have expected more from Mr. Between-my-legs dunk-got-me-a-job-for-two-decades.

Get that out of Tyrus' House!!!!

by cubbybear on Oct 9, 2007 11:49 AM CDT up reply actions

not really predictions
but the same, stupid ranking vein.
12. Scott Skiles, Chicago: Considering he was a coach on the floor while he played, he was always cut out to lead. His act has grown more refined over the years, but demanding will always be one of the first words used to describe him. Successful is another.

Only the top 20 too. The bottom is the best part of these things!

by hscs on Oct 8, 2007 1:50 PM CDT reply actions

more ranking
I'm not joking when I say D-Wil is going to be an NBA GM one day. There are only 30 players in D-Wil's top 50 including:
23. Luol Deng, Chicago: Deng is good, very good. He's underrated in every aspect of the game, yet he is the linchpin of the Bulls. He is much like a younger Manu Ginobili, except with a higher upside. He can shoot from anywhere on the court and has nice post moves. He rebounds well. He defends well. And he plays with fire. This season expect to see Luol bust out.
  1. Shawn Marion, Phoenix
  2. Dirk Nowitzki, Dallas: I read the posts in the comment section when I had Dirk in the top 10. Then I thought and thought and thought. And you know what? Dirk isn't that good.
  3. Antawn Jamison, Washington

Hard to argue with Nellie
He has won a title helped turn around crappy teams.  Mavs and Warriors twice.  George Karl has a fairly good track record as well (96 finals).  Mike Brown in my opinion stinks but I am sure his finals appearance this year weighed heavy into the ranking.

Karl
like Don is a one trick pony.  While he can make a team successful, he can also sow the seeds of collapse pretty quickly.  He did that with the Bucks.  Both of them are Drama Queens in the Larry Brown mold.

And Karl actually thought Tim Thomas was worth a lot of money.

by KT on Oct 9, 2007 12:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Drama queen
as in the Phil Jackson/Pat Riley mold? Most coaches are drama queens.  Karl led a successful sonics team in the mid to late 90s.  Karl has done a decent job with the Sonics.  Nellie built the current Mavs team as GM/coach. He ran TMC in the 80s/90s. He took the Bucks to the playoff from no where.  I love Skiles and I am happy that he is our coach but I seriously doubt he could have repeated Nellie's success with GS last year given their personal.

It was the early to mid 90's
with the Sonics, and he was also the coach when the 60+ win Sonics lost to the 8th seeded Nuggets.  Could you please look something up.  Anything.  Karl isn't that great of a coach.  He's just one of the North Carolina guys, and that's all.
