It's a team game, unless you can take a pot shot at a great player

Marc Berman is taking my 'there's no formula, you're a title team if you're a title team' philosophy a bit too far in the opposite direction: you'll only go to the finals if you've been to the finals before:

The notion that the Kevin Garnett trade makes the Celtics the favorites to win the East - as many have said - is laughable. This is a squad that didn't win 25 games last season.

The three Boston stars - Garnett, Ray Allen, Paul Pierce - have a combined zero appearances in The NBA Finals.

Garnett is a great player, but he has been to the conference finals once. Pierce and Allen have been on plenty of losing teams in their careers.

Cleveland, Detroit, the Nets and Miami? They all have as good a chance as the Celtics to make The Finals.

Um, what about Chicago? I was about to say maybe it was because they're so relatively 'inexperienced'. But Ben Wallace has been to the finals. Maybe they need more of that championship experience: too bad Devean George is no longer a free agent.

To ease the pain of following that twisted logic, here's the latest Carnival of the NBA at GiveMeTheRock.

i don't think they make the finals
but at the very least they could advance in the playoffs.  If you were going to add a superstar to two notorious shooters like Allen and Pierce, KG was probably the best fit, one of the few who would be willing to put the team before himself.

personally, i think the best thing about this trade is that it kills the knicks playoff hopes.  Hey zeke, good luck getting past NJ, Toronto and/or Boston, because there is no way 4 teams from the Atlantic make the playoffs (hell going to be hard to get 3 in).

Well the Bulls did get their asses kicked in the
2nd round. So people just don't have the respect for the Bulls as they did say before the NJ loss. I mean after those two games in Detroit the Bulls looked like a lottery team. So I expect that when you don't make it out of the second round and choke when you need to win a huge game. I remember the Biggest choke job was in Game 3 in UC. They blew that lead and couldn't even hit free throws. So maybe the outsiders are right. Maybe we hold to high of standards for the Bulls. I guess time will tell. I remember being very embarrassed to be a Bulls fan. They looked like scared childern.

So Matt this seems like it could fit under the Kevin Garnett Diaries? There are already 2 of those? Are you becoming the Tribune Co. of Blogabull? Like how you Hitler shit up in here!

He destoryed
my last Dairy because it was on KG and there is already 2 others on KG or something like that. Then he makes a Dairy about KG himself. It was called ''KG to wear # 5'' and my whole intent was to get some East power rankings. Im just kidding around cause he's so picky about dairies.

re: Game 3 at UC choke job
What I saw was Skiles choking the bench minutes (in desperation?). Everyone got cold from outside, only Noc was allowed time, and they all were so tired/pressured the chill spiralled to the free throw line even. That's why their comeback was so gratifying to me. I really believe the key next year is Skiles being able to avoid a similar mistake.

by marionette on Aug 1, 2007 4:36 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

In the Celt's case,
it would seem like last year is more or less irrelevent, considering half that team is gone.
"They had me do a psychology test and I asked Coach Skiles if that affected his coaching. He laughed and said, `No way.'" (Joakim Noah)

there have been so many awful
NBA columns published in the last 48 hours it feels like the regular season is already underway.

by hscs on Aug 1, 2007 9:56 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

wow, even Mariotti protege Greg Couch
has written a Bulls column.

summary: "Boston gets KG and Paxson gets Joe Smith. Need a superstar, Paxson's too patient. Get Gasol, although Gasol isn't really a superstar, based on my superstar formula of guessing who's a superstar. Can they get Kobe? I don't know, it turns out I don't really know how the NBA works,"

I already copy and pasted
that masterpiece. I think the baseball trade deadline (Jermaine Dye is still here? The Cubs didn't get A-Rod and Pujols? It's the end of the world!!!) gave a lot of writers CBA amnesia.

by hscs on Aug 1, 2007 10:11 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Those articles are so lame
You notice in that article it doesn't even mantion how the Bulls would even aquire Gasol. It pretty much just says, "Go get him!" Those articles rarely include what the Bulls would have to give up to get a guy lke him.

That Celts team is old, inexperienced (in playoffs and together), and maybe have the worst depth in the league. All of a sudden they're Eastern Champs?

Oh and Allen and Pierce are injury prone...but forget all that. They got 3 superstars...WOO!

A little more realistic piece
here

And it gives little props to the Bulls as well . . .

"Chicago's young players are getting better every season, and so far, general manager John Paxson has resisted the temptation of trading young members from that nucleus of Luol Deng, Ben Gordon, Kirk Hinrich and Andres Nocioni. Ben Wallace is still a big defensive factor in the paint. Throw in much-improved Thabo Sefolosha, Tyrus Thomas and defensive-minded rookie Joakim Noah, and the Bulls look like a serious championship contender."

True hoop has a nice wrap of reaction
Including Matt's.

http://myespn.go.com/nba/truehoop - no one is crowning the Celtics as champs there.

And Henry still doesn't link to Matt.

haha
I know, it's an ongoing travesty. Keep writing Henry and get me back on his blogroll!

It's interesting that bloggers feel less optimistic about the new Celitcs (and more about the Bulls) than the MSM columnists so far. I think a small part of it may be bias against the Celtics because there's 68 Celtics blogs out there.

Lakers Blog
that guy from blue and gold really loves the bulls.  Maybe its because he wants the kobe to chicago trade to go through, who knows.  He picks luol deng as eastern conference MVP.  Although I think Deng will be a bona fide all star in terms of talent its ahrd to see him getting the nod in most basketball circles over KG, Arenas, Lebron, and Wade.  I wish people would recognize that the east is ten times stronger this year than last year.  The east suffered tons of injuries (arenas, wade, pierce) and rashard lewis, KG, and randolph have added some star power.

I wish theyd stop callin it the JV league and all that bs.  What teams in the west are going to be better next year??? Suns are going to be the same, so are the spurs, and Mavericks etc...the only team that I think has the chance to improve by a lot is the Rockets.  I could see them making a surprise run, otherwise nothing has changed much in the West.  Durant and Oden won't scare anyone too much next year.  Does anyone know what the record for East v West teams was last year?

by Sambossanova on Aug 1, 2007 12:01 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

he does like the Bulls team
Between him and the ESPN.com experts there are several mentions of Deng's leap into superstardom. I love watching Luol and think he'll get better, but I don't see him being an MVP candidate anytime soon...just seems like there isn't some missing point of his game that will vault him into that category. He's already really good at a lot of things, and isn't going to become taller or a better leaper. but who knows, all it may take is a couple post moves and some strength and he'll be pretty unstoppable.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Aug 1, 2007 12:24 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Are you forgetting
the Jazz and Warriors out West? But injuries played a huge part, you're right. And age/lethargy even before the injuries hit with DET, NJ, and MIA. It'll probably be the big factor in next year's results as well. Even with a good team, traditionally the Warriors only make the playoffs every other year, for example.

Good that the Bulls have youth and depth then.

True Hoop
yeah, that is fairly ironic, especially with Henry basically repeating over and over that Blogabull was so important to creating True Hoop. Maybe there is some ESPN corporate dictate?

expert picks
if you look at who they have winning the east and being in the finals more than half of the experts pick the bulls.  I am surprised people are finally showing the bulls some love.

Hollinger article on NYSun
This is great stuff
But many have placed the Eastern Conference tiara on Boston's head already, which I believe is seriously jumping the gun. In fact, over the past couple days I've come across an unexpected obstacle -- having to explain exactly how and why all the "nobodies" in the NBA are not created equal.

I can't even tell you how many comments I've read in the past 48 hours, whether in papers or my inbox, with the supposition that, "if Cleveland could win the East with LeBron James and a bunch of nobodies," then Garnett's arrival in Boston -- pairing him with All-Stars Paul Pierce and Ray Allen -- virtually guarantees the Celtics the conference title.

Apparently these people feel there are only two kinds of basketball players -- those with shoe commercials and those without -- and further, that the players in the latter category all form one giant huddled mass under the banner of "role players" whose impact on wins and losses is utterly negligible.

Cleveland's nobodies are actually decent players. None of them are anywhere near LeBron's stratosphere, which is what helps gives the impression that the Cavs are a one-man band. And in comparison to better-balanced teams like the Pistons and Bulls, they tend to look that way. But compare them to the Celtics, and suddenly their nobodies start looking pretty good.

A power trio does not always reap success
The best example I can think of is the 98-99 Rockets with Olajuwon, Pippen, and Barkley who were all on the back end of their careers (much like Bostons). It turned out to be a complete disaster ending with a 1st round out. It was the strike season but the playoffs weren't changed.

I'm not saying Boston shouldn't be happy of their situation but they shouldn't punch their Final tickets just yet.

Craziest thing I have seen in person at a sporting event. Carl Crawford of the Devil Rays straight up stole up last year against the Red Sox. I got on tv after it, straight up craziest thing I have ever seen.

but until they do (or jsut matt, i am not s ure how the site is managed), Ill say this:

Wow, I didnt know there was such thing as a Devil Ray fan.  And the chance of finding one on a bulls blog is like 1 in 5 million.  It must be painful to be one of the worst every year.  Hopefully youll turn it around eventually and pull off something amazing like your Florida Marlins.  As long as it is not at the expense of the yankees im all for the devil rays.

The cubs were my childhood team and I sitll follow
them. But the Devil Rays are my local team since I have season tickets. I believe within a year or two they can contend if they make the right moves. The worse part is the complete bashing from the people like ESPN and other big media, even most of the local media hates them.

east
I wouldn't dismiss Boston.  The comparison to  the 99 Rockets is bad--Olajuawon was 36, Barkley 34 or 35, and Pippen 33 or 4.  The Celts new big three avg. age is about 31 or 32--a world of difference in the NBA.  Also this is a well-balanced trio with a big, a slasher, and a jump-shooter, all of whom posted pretty good assist numbers last year.  Maybe a better comparison would be the Suns, who despite having 3 superstars, have yet to make the finals.
As for the Bulls, why would they need a lo-post scorer?  They have enough firepower with Deng, Gordon, and their excellent 3-pt. shooting.  What they really need is defense at the PF spot, preferably a shot-blocker to compensate for the lack of backcourt size.  My guess is that TT needs another year of weight-lifting before he can hold down PF in the NBA, and who knows about Noah.

flip flop it
Bulls defense good. Bulls offense bad.

by hscs on Aug 8, 2007 1:11 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

bulls offense bad
Deng & Gordon have clearly been on a sharp upward trajectory offensively.  All the Bulls offense needs is for that trend to continue this year, and at their ages that is likely to be the case.  Gordon needs to take more 3's.
