The latest installment of "former Bulls for a reason"

  • You can tell it's the offseason (although it usually happens closer to training camp) when you read the fan pinings for Jay Williams.

  • While JamesOn 'The Promise' Curry is trying to be the next Jannero Pargo, version 1.0 may be going to Greece.

  • And this made me chuckle:

Think about the Chicago Bulls bringing in veteran Antonio Davis four years ago to help nurture that young team, and you have an idea of how the organization views the affect bringing in [Kurt] Thomas could have on this young Sonics squad.

Thankfully the Bulls are past that stage and are now looking for veterans that can play. Although I remember some sentiment of wanting Davis back because he was tall and old, two qualities that for some reason didn't similarly endear everyone to PJ Brown.

But who am I to thumb my nose at such fans? I should acknowledge that the Bulls themselves wanted Davis out of retirement, and gave another nuturing hero in Adrian Griffin a 3-year contract just last summer.

Hmmm
Somewhere in that Celtics blog posting on Jay Williams, someone suggested trading for Du instead...

And didn't Pargo opt out of the last year of his contract?  Wonder if he's kicking himself.

Uh-oh: Ron "Lord have" Mercer in trouble
The word out of Nashville is that Ron got into some trouble at a strip club:

Former NBA player Ron Mercer surrendered to Nashville police Wednesday to face a misdemeanor assault charge.

The charge stemmed from a scuffle at a Nashville strip club in April.

Mercer, a Nashville native, is accused of punching a bouncer. He was released on $1,500 bond.

Looks like OtB is all over it too.

He's innocent
He was such a soft player, there's no way he could have beaten anyone up.

No matter how this is painted.
the suns got played.  You gave up two first rounders to part ways with a contract?  It isn't like K. Thomas couldn't play.  He was one of the few interior defenders in the Suns system.  I thought he played TD decent 1 on 1 in the finals.  So next year when they meet the Spurs again in the playoffs how are they going to be any better with one less person to keep TD from destroying your squad?  Sorry Kerr PJ Brown isn't the answer.

How many draft picks have the Suns given away in the last 4 years now?  You think this might come back to haunt them when Nash is done?  The sad part of it all is its very likely that when Nash is done this team will have not passed the Western Conference Finals.

If they were going to throw draft picks away why not package them with Kurt and Marion for KG?

a new mashup of defensive metrics
actually rated Peej higher than Kurt Thomas in 06-07. I think it's pretty obvious McHale is a major fuckup, and blaming other teams for not getting a Garnett trade done is unfounded.

Thomas' defense has been long-overrated
unless you read blogs.
It's no secret that the Knicks' defense has been pitiful, but what surprised me is what position has been their worst. I would have thought opposing shooting guards would be circling the New York dates on their schedule, but it's actually been the power forward position that's given the Knicks the most trouble. Amazed as I was, 82games.com reports that PFs have a 20.8 PER against the Knicks. Checking their individual stats, it's Kurt Thomas (15.3, 22.5, -9.2) who seems to be the culprit. Just to make sure this year's results aren't a victim of small sample size, I checked last year's stats, where Kurt shows up as a below average defender (17.5 oPER) as well.

That's from November of '04.

I think his lauded defense against Duncan was merely the best of otherwise terrible options. It's not like Duncan still didn't do whatever he watned.

As far as the Suns cost-cutting, some may whine that they're the victims of their own success, but nobody told them to give fat contracts to Diaw and Banks, either.
