Noah out for Summer League

Trib (no KC Johnson?):

Before taking the dais with second-round draft picks Aaron Gray and JamesOn Curry at a Monday afternoon news conference at the Berto Center, Noah had his ailing right rotator cuff examined by [Team physician Brian] Cole.

The Bulls will hold their lottery pick out of summer-league action in both Orlando and Salt Lake City, taking a conservative approach with an injury over which they hold no long-term concerns.

"He'll travel to be part of the experience, but he's just going to get treatment because we're going to rest it for the next month so he has his best chance moving forward," general manager John Paxson said. "(Surgery) is a last resort. Our doctors are confident if we go this approach, he'll be fine."

The Bulls, like all teams, viewed magnetic resonance imaging tests of what is believed to be a slight tear in the shoulder before last Thursday's draft. That Noah accepted all predraft workouts while in pain pleased rather than put off Bulls management.

"A lot of guys shy away from those things," Paxson said. "I think you can tell he's about winning and competing."

(I have a feeling we won't read any Pax/Skiles quotes this summer without the word 'winner' in them. Luckily for them the team is winning, so it doesn't come off as eye-roll-inducing as it could.)

Here's Noah on the injury:

"I don't think (surgery) is the first option. They want to see how it is with rehab. I did three weeks of rehab in Los Angeles when I was working out with (noted trainer) Joe Abunassar. My shoulder actually felt a lot better. But with the draft process that's going on and flying from team to team and competing, I didn't have time to do any of the rehab. I was in pain all the time. I just wanted to show teams I was ready to compete and a little problem in my shoulder wasn't going to stop me from playing."

Kindof a bummer regarding summer league, hopefully the shoulder heals with plenty of time before training camp so they can make him shoot 2000 jump shots a day. Before being able to enter the Mike Sweetney memorial cafetorium.

There's video of Monday's press conference here (under the 'what's new' tab)

My evil side says their holding him out for a trade.
I hope for Noah but I expect Hawes.

I hope he sticks though.

this sucks
I was hoping for an undefeated summer team thanks to some twin towers action. Who doesn't want to see the Andre Barrets of tomorrow get all their shots swatted away?
Someone ask Bears' Grand Wizard Jerry Angelo why Kyle Orton is still employed.

summer league
when do we get to find out who is playing on the bulls summer league roster?

you really care?
Sefo and Tyrus thats all you have to know. Oh Gray and Curry.
I hope for Noah but I expect Hawes.

for those of you who follow summer league...
I've never followed it before so excuse my ignorance.  But for those who have, I'm curious: Do draft picks (especially the high ones) always participate? And when do they stop participating? If Thabo & Tyrus are in it, how talented (or how many seasons' experience) do you have to get before a team stops asking/expecting you to play? And how helpful is it in developing one or more of that player's skills?

Guess it offers a summer fix for the basketball junkie. How useful is it for the fan to evaluate a player? And where do you go to keep up with summer-league action?

Summer league
Draft pick usually participate.  Sometimes when a team is happy with what they see of a certain player.  They will hold them out towards the end to prevent injury.  I believe Thabo only played the first couple last year; it allowed for more shots for Tyrus.  The only words last year that could be used to describe Tyrus's play is an "athletic chucker".

I believe
Thabo sustained an injury and was brought back to Chicago for treatment during the summer games last year.
I'm excited to see what the rooks can do.

by sue369 on Jul 3, 2007 8:38 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Last year
TT and Thabo both participated. I think most of the other top players drafted played too. I watched the games on line. I enjoyed watching to see what TT and Thabo could do.

I can't remember what site had the streamline for the games. I'm too lazy to go back and look it up.

I'm excited to see what the rooks can do.

Web-site
I think the summer league games were streamed online via the hosting city's team web-site. I believe last year the Bulls participated in Orlando, and there was a link on magic.com that directed you toward the streamed games.

Second year participation
seems to depend on how much PT the player got their rookie year.  In addition to the Pepsi Pro summer league, hosted by the Orlando magic, Bulls are also doing the Rockie Mountain Revue, hosted by the Jazz.  I believe it's the week of the 16th.

The schedule is up for the Orlando league, but teams aren't posted yet.  I imagine the Bulls are still trying to round up people to fill out the team.

"They had me do a psychology test and I asked Coach Skiles if that affected his coaching. He laughed and said, `No way.'" (Joakim Noah)

Players rehabbing from an injury
will participate sometimes. I seem to remember that Shane Battier played a third year of summer ball to rehab an injury. Summer league's a joke, mostly. Some guy always cleans up and then doesn't make camp a few weeks later, but it's a decent fix for junkies like us.

little Joe
Abunussar cracks me up.  When I lived in Bloomington, he was based down there for a few years.  I remember him training some low-level talent in the IU rec-center prior to drafts.  The funny thing about Joe is that he's like 5'3'', seriously.  You'd think a basketball trainer would at least be 5'9''.

by CookDing on Jul 3, 2007 8:32 AM CDT   0 recs

I really
hope they keep Noah. I think he will be a fan favorite and I like his personality.

SportsNite had a one on one interview with him at 10 p.m. last night. I looked to see if it was on the CSN site but it's not.

I'm excited to see what the rooks can do.

by sue369 on Jul 3, 2007 8:53 AM CDT   0 recs

I recoreded it.
He's interview by Mark Sninowski shinowski Mark Schanowski.

They are contemplating surgery?
As I understand it, rotator cuff surgery is relatively major and can sideline a player for months?

The injury sounds more serious than I had anticipated.  It's rather disheartening that he will miss summer league play. While the league itself is meaningless, it is great experience for rookies and tends to accelerate their development. In Noah's case, though, missing summer league is probably less damaging because he spent an extra year in college.

Still, I don't like the specter of an injury hovering over Noah. The Bulls must have done their due diligence, though.

by 1958ChiTown on Jul 3, 2007 10:35 AM CDT   0 recs

I think it depends
on whether you have open or arthroscopic surgery.

Also, the extent of the injury of course.

good call
yep...not to turn into House or anything but...
Because arthroscopic surgery requires only limited surgical access, the incision is much smaller than is necessary for open surgery, resulting in fewer risks. The patient's recovery time is also shorter.

However, because repairing a torn rotator cuff can be a complicated procedure, it is often performed as an open procedure. However, arthroscopic repairs are becoming more common, especially for small size tears.

Rotator cuff tears usually heal
by themselves.  I'm sure none of you remember my concern over Nocioni's plantar fasciitis.  This is not a big concern and should heal on it's own.  That being said you are always concerned about the wear and tear of a full NBA season on a rookie.

by chgobr on Jul 3, 2007 11:43 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

mine did.
I hope for Noah but I expect Hawes.

by joejoeEnglish94bulls4ever on Jul 3, 2007 11:55 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

seriousness
i think they are more serious for throwing atheletes-ie-QB's and Pitchers, where they can be potentially devestating and, in most cases, are season ending.  It's a bit easier, in my understanding, to get away with this sort of injury in Basketball.

by CookDing on Jul 3, 2007 3:52 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

How can you not like Noah?
After watching the video, he definitely says all the right things:

(paraphrasing)

Reporter: You were very animated and a team leader at Florida. When you're coming into a new situation like this that already has established leaders, are you going to do the same thing?

Noah: Well, I'd like to be myself. But to me, winning is the most important thing. If coach thinks I'm hurting the team by being myself, I'll change. I'll calm down. Winning is important to me.

He's not the answer the Bulls were looking for, but I firmly believe he was the best they could have got outside of Oden/Durant/Horford.

Yes, of course.

by tyger1147 on Jul 3, 2007 11:41 AM CDT   0 recs

yyger1147 - I love Noah'srsponse to that question.
Everything I read about him is that we landed a winner.  The extent of his basketball contribution remains to be seen.  It does seem that we have a good, goofy, fun guy on our team.  The emphasis is on good.

I think
Aaron Gray will have a better career than Hawes

by eross226 on Jul 3, 2007 12:35 PM CDT   0 recs

Anyone watching the summer league . .
Notice one main thing.

Tyrus actually makes his jumpers in these games.

I remember watching last year and he would frequently hit them.

I saw a said of him that I never knew was there. Of course, during the regular season and playoffs, I saw what I expected the whole time.

Sad Sad Sad Sad Sad

by Option27 on Jul 3, 2007 1:25 PM CDT   0 recs

I remember most of the them were pull up jumpers
on the break.  I think it's easier for him to have consistent form taking the shot off the dribble.  I want to see what a year in the NBA did for Tyrus.

by Scotter on Jul 3, 2007 5:00 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Anyone notice the height difference between
Noah and Aaron Gray? They are suppose to both be 7 footers but Gray looks like he was 2 to 3 inches taller.

by boerwinkle on Jul 3, 2007 2:14 PM CDT   0 recs

More So
Look at paxson standing next to Noah, he looks like he is only 3-4 inches shorter, isnt paxson like 6'3 or 6'4?
im trying hard to become the next kirk hinrich, therefore im doing nothing more than being the next chris duhon.

by piccolomair on Jul 3, 2007 2:29 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I noticed
that too.

Measurements

Noah: 6'10.5"

Noah: 7'0"

I also noticed. He looks more than
1" taller than Noah.  If Gray can help us this would be an incredible plus.  That is a big if, but I'm hoping.

when did inches make you better?

NBA.com has
released their Rookie Rankings Noah is at 8.

That press conference finally convinced
me that I could overcome the personaility and the cliches, and be happy Noah's on the team.

Who
would you guys rather see in a trade for Gasol. Noah or TT

by eross226 on Jul 4, 2007 12:09 PM CDT   0 recs

Noah
Gordon, Nocioni, Duhon, Khryapa for Gasol is a really bad idea.

by Colossus on Jul 4, 2007 12:10 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Definitely Noah
To me Noah has the potential to be Tyson Chandler while TT could be Shawn Kemp.  Plus, I haven't had enough time to warm to Noah yet.

by paxson43 on Jul 4, 2007 12:13 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Just send them Hinrich instead,
his salary alone comes within the 125% + $100k trade rule.
Gordon, Nocioni, Duhon, Khryapa for Gasol is a really bad idea.

I would love for them to dump
Hinrich and his big contract away.
Gordon, Nocioni, Duhon, Khryapa for Gasol is my only offer.

Then we could have
Du at the PG full-time!!!!!!!!!

I
would rather have JamesOn Curry play the point then duhon full time.

by eross226 on Jul 4, 2007 7:39 PM CDT   0 recs

I was joking
when I suggested Du being the #1 PG.

I'd rather let it be Thabo than Du.

Gordon, Nocioni, Duhon, Khryapa for Gasol is a really bad idea.
