by Sambossanova on Jun 28, 2007 10:40 PM CDT reply actions

Aaron Gray - From ESPN
Positives: Gray is a legit 7-footer, and he has the girth (he weighs in at 271) to handle the middle full time. He's a good rebounder, especially on the offensive boards. Excellent hands. Good lower body strength helps him hold position in the paint. Nice baby hook. Good perimeter shooter.

Negatives: He's not a very good athlete, and weight has been an issue in the past. With the NBA moving toward an up-tempo style, Gray's type of game is less valued than it's been in the past. Not much of a shot blocker. Poor free throw shooter.

Summary: For a second straight season, Gray continues to prove that he's a legit NBA center prospect, despite scouts' misgivings. He's moved from the first-round bubble to a pretty firm first-round pick.

Screamin A. Richardson is a better scorer than anyone on the Bobcats plus he got the rights to Davidson who if not for pulling out of school because of his brother's passing would have been atleast a mid 1st rounder.

I'm from Pittsburgh
I've seen Gray play about 50 games the last two year.  He's terrible.  Can't shoot, no lateral movement, can't jump.  He's going to get destroyed at the NBA level, if he ever gets on the court.

JamesOn Curry - From ESPN
Similarities: Quincy Douby

Notes: Declared for the 2007 NBA Draft and has decided to stay in the draft. Had his college scholarship pulled by North Carolina after being arrested for marijuana possession.

Positives: Big-time scorer. Excellent slasher to the basket. Good shooter with legit NBA 3-point range. Good at penetrating and dishing to open teammates. Flies up and down the floor. Long arms allow him to play bigger than he is.

Negatives: Undersized 2 guard. Thin, frail body. Turnover prone, can play out of control. Poor shot selection at times. Doesn't give a great effort on the defensive end. Very inconsistent.

Summary: He came into the NCAA as a highly touted prospect, but struggled his first two years at Oklahoma State. Had a much better junior year, putting him back on the NBA radar screen.

Sad Sad Sad Sad Sad

by LD9 on Jun 28, 2007 10:57 PM CDT reply actions

Doubt it
These are just second round picks.  Half these guys will never even play in the league.

by Big D on Jun 28, 2007 11:03 PM CDT up reply actions

2nd round big
If the bulls were going to get some big man in the second round they should have draft one with at least some offensive potential who could score in the post aka Herbert Hill.  Frustration at an all time high.  If you combine gray, wallace, thomas, adrian griffin, and duhon we could have the lowest scoring team ever.

by Sambossanova on Jun 28, 2007 10:58 PM CDT reply actions

Fortunately that lineup will never be on the court
Together.  Two of those guys may not even be on the team next year.

by Big D on Jun 28, 2007 11:02 PM CDT up reply actions

My guess
They didn't want to take a friend of Noah's unless they know they won't cut him.  And they don't know that.

So, Aaron Gray and a guy whom I will call "Not Eddie."  I don't really have a gut feeling either way.

Anyway, I can't wait to see what center they pick up this offseason!  I was really hoping for Randolph-oh well.  Collison?  Milicic?  Hawes?  Some other (white) dude?

by Craig Hodges Explosion 3000 on Jun 28, 2007 10:59 PM CDT reply actions

Not exactly inspiring,
but I think the Bulls will be better with the addition and the internal improvement we've come to expect.  Why are people saying this move indicates the Bulls may go after Milicic?  What's the reasoning?

by Freethefro on Jun 28, 2007 11:04 PM CDT reply actions

Good Job
Paxson grabbed high value at his picks.  I am happy we grabbed two seven footers who can grab rebounds a scoring two guard off the bench.  Good job.  Gray might not be a starter but at a 49th pick he is a very servicable big off the bench.

He probably isn't done because Duhon & Noce can still be moved.

by Jesse07 on Jun 28, 2007 11:08 PM CDT reply actions

gray
can take up sweetney's minutes except he has half the offensive skill sweets does.

by Sambossanova on Jun 28, 2007 11:16 PM CDT up reply actions

You give Sweets the ball on the low block,
he'll score 6 out of 10 times.

Gray will score 2 out of 10 times, if he gets lucky.  And if he gets fouled, he can't shoot free throws.

Basically, Gray is the worst 7 footer in the NBA the last 20 years.  I'd rather have Mark Eaton or Greg Ostertag.

by PGHcager on Jun 28, 2007 11:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Gray's a good pick-up
Yeah, he's not the most athletic guy, but he's taken alot of heat throughout college, so the tendency is to underrate him now.  He's still a 7' widebody.  Not a bad 4th big to pick up more than halfway through the 2nd round (keep in mind he was probably a first-round pick in '06).

Premature?

by Freethefro on Jun 28, 2007 11:11 PM CDT reply actions

Off-base
Look, the Bulls knew they needed post production, that's why they worked out Hawes not once but twice.

The Bulls made a very educated decision to pass on him.  They're a better judge, right now, of whether they made the right pick in Noah as an NBA player, than any pundit or fan.

So yes, extremely premature.

by Todd Lerner @ Blog a Bull on Jun 29, 2007 12:06 AM CDT up reply actions

Overall Grade
B-

Noah might be fine, needed two big men.  Curry could be a good pickup, and a reason to ship Duhon away, which we all would like.  No low post threat available, and Gray should be able to contribute right away.  Was a top20 pick about two months ago, and Gasol would be a project.  Layups will be difficult against Noah, Wallace, Thomas frontline.  All are fantastic help defenders.  Noah's FT shooting will be a boost, and energy might just make the whole team explode into fits of rage.  Shot can be worked on, Hakeem could help teach them(Thomas and Noah).  Overall, fit needs as well as possible, would have liked to sneak up to get McRoberts in addition.  SF depth could have helped with the possible departure of Noce.  Deng/Thabo?/Griffin isn't too strong.  I don't consider Thomas a SF, but I guess Deng will get generous minutes next year.  Overall, team looks like so(Without Duhon, Khyrapa, Allen, PJ and Noce):

Hinrich/Gordon/Curry
Gordon/Thabo/Curry
Deng/Thabo/Griffin
Thomas/Noah
Wallace/Noah/Gray

Not a bad team, decent depth and that's only with 10 players.

Let's finish Zeke off with a diamond in the rough!

by cubbybear on Jun 28, 2007 11:29 PM CDT reply actions

Noc
Maybe Chapu stays with the Bulls.  He would probably be content being the backup for Luol and whoever is the PF.  I would like to see him come back personally...even as much as he enrages at times.  He's probably a better option than most of what is out there, including so called big men.  Duhon should go of course, but I say keep Noc.

The East
Once again the East will be wide open.  I agree with you joejoe that Boston will be better with two legit stars and Jefferson.  Pistons will drop a bit in my opinion although not a whole lot.  Cavs will be the same, but won't get slaughtered in the Finals again because they won't get out of the second round.  The Bucks are the team in the Central that will be tough.  They are a playoff team and if Yi is at least a fair player this year they could be a problem.
