How I will talk myself into liking whatever Pax does.

I fully admit that I'm not much of a scout. So while I certainly read a lot of scouting reports on the players reportedly on the Bulls radar, it's hard to figure out which players are actually right for the Bulls. They're all 'right' if Pax tells me so. He's seen them work out, after all. Oh, and he's better at this than I am.

If Joakim Noah is the selection, I'll assume Pax didn't think Hawes or Yi were near ready, and size trumped the idea of taking best player available. If it's Green or Wright, I'll figure Pax doesn't think any of the big men are any good, so he decided to take the best player regardless of if they duplicate what Luol Deng does. If he takes Yi (or Brandan Wright), maybe the idea is the Bulls don't plan on picking this high for a while so take the shot at the highest upside. If he takes Spencer Hawes I'll think Pax saw Hawes school Noah in their workout and determined not only are the skills there but the body and athleticism too. If he takes Mike Conley I'll certainly be confused, but otherwise ecstatic over a possible major deal in the future. If he trades out I'll assume everybody available was unimpressive.

I don't have a strong feeling about any of these guys (trading up for Hortford notwithstanding), so whoever Pax likes I'll like. It may not fit into the "I have a sports blog and an opinion, damnit!" mantra of the web, but such is the case when not only has the GM made some shrewd picks, but tough-to-predict ones as well. Pax has a rep for making 'safe' picks from the pool of college 'winners', but I don't see much of a pattern; I've actually been quite surprised with the way he's picked over the years.  He's taken Hinrich when his roster already had a point guard, taken Ben Gordon #3 which just weeks before the draft it seemed way too high. Taken the raw Tyrus Thomas when there were more polished offensive players available. Taken Thabo Sefolosha who was out of the 'whoever was in the Final Four that year' mold of previous drafts.

There's no cut and dry mold for the players in this draft. Because some guys are labeled 'ready' and others 'projects', it's a gray area to determine how much of an impact a ready player can bring, or how much time a project needs. Tyrus Thomas was thought of as a project but he was certainly an impact player by the time the season was through. That same philosophy could be in play again, but however Pax goes I'll probably be nodding in agreement regardless.

It's too bad cause they dont have a bad team and I think they could definitely make a run for the atlantic division title...which isnt much.

Marcus Camby???
In that same article, Sam writes:

"The Bulls are said to be shopping their No. 9 pick and Denver's Marcus Camby is a possibility, with the Nuggets likely to cut payroll by making Camby available. The deal would have to include P.J. Brown in a sign-and-trade for one guaranteed season."

He's 33 years old-the same age Wallace would be at the start of the season, and while he'd bring probably more production from the season's start-to-finish than would a rookie, I'd rather keep that pick. The rookie most likely would be less injury prone, and to me, it just seems you get your money's worth by getting a player 10+ years younger. You know that you are getting 11-11 guy with Camby, but the rookie possibly could give you more down the road.

Obviously, if this goes through, Paxson is just reinforcing his "sooner rather than later" plan.

by SRQman on Jun 25, 2007 2:17 AM CDT up reply actions

I know what your saying.
But for me as a Bulls fan that was the best dunk. Better than any of Jordan's. It was like dunking on the whole city of NY. I used to hate the Knicks so much. Looking back I just wonder had Krause done a better job of drafting in his later years how many those teams could have won. The NBA finals that wasn't. Rockets vs. Bulls. Then they could have takin it in 1999. But so many factors cause so many effects. It's easy to look back and say they could have won more titles but it's just so hard to do. You always wonder had Jordan continued to play. I guess not seeing them get old like past title teams was better. I don't think they would have got past the Pacers in 1999 but who knows. Spurs vs Bulls. I think everyone was getting sick of the Bulls winning and the league was ready to move on.

SLAM rated that dunk
the greatest facial of all time (the dunking kind, pervs) a few years back. I don't think you can have a dunk like that anymore because of "the love" in today's NBA. Big names/teams never voice their hatred for each other anymore. What makes that dunk so great is the pure animosity between Pippen and Ewing, the Bulls and the Knicks and their respective fans. Only similar scenario would be if Kobe dunked on Shaq.  Who knows, maybe Oden and Durant will start to beef. How great would that be...

I'll be happy with whomever they draft. I've seen so many videos and highlights (did Hawes really look good knocking down that near-3 pt shot? Yes he did!) that I want every player around their pick.

Noah is the only individual talent I won't be excited for, but then... he'll fit into the Bulls scheme so perfectly, that's at least cool.

Noah, Jianlian, Hawes, Wright.
I'm curious to see if Pax does anything with those second round picks to move up and grab some late first/early second talent.  There will be some really strong players available in that stretch.

You know what is really interesting?
According to Chad Ford, Brandon Wright is really slipping and could slide to the Bulls

Now if this happens to be the case, Wright HAS TO BE THE PICK!

I'll swallow my Jianlian pride for this pick in a second. This kid has the potential to be an amazing scoring PF for a long long time. I know a lot of people here are saying that the Bulls don't need anymore kids that "could" be good.

From what I've gleaned about B Wright, it sounds like he doesn't try hard all the time.  Highly doubtful that Pax would select a guy that has motivation issues, regardless of potential.

by Option27 on Jun 25, 2007 1:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Don't hold your breath on B Wright
Using history as a guide, Paxson has ALWAYS gone with hardworking character guys with less upside.

During the 2004 draft, there were tons of questions about Luol's athletic ability (which were spot-on) but Pax liked him because Luol was mature and would work his butt off to maximize his potential.  He opted for Luol instead of guys who have far more physical tools like Iguodala.

You can argue that Brandon Wright's upside is too good to pass up, but Paxson is going to be really concerned about his questionable motor.  The few scouting reports I've read on Wright are exciting, but almost everyone mentions how inconsistent is effort is.

by paxson43 on Jun 25, 2007 1:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Exactly - all these guys look the same
Matt, I'm with you.  They're all really young and lanky.  I've seen some footage on all of them and they all seem like projects to me.  Certainly some will pan out to be solid players, and others will not.  After checking out youtubes on all of them (check out this guy's page - he's got videos on most of the projected lottery picks), I'm feeling a bit better about Noah.  I was against him earlier, but he would fit in well with the team.  I can certainly imagine him and TT making it extremely difficult to score inside.

Everyone (including Pax) says that the team needs low-post scoring, but who in this draft has that outside of Oden?  I'm not seeing it right now, but I have faith in Pax's ability to determine who can do it.  And if none of them are going to be solid low-post scorers and he goes with Noah, then I'm OK with that.  Pax will get the best player he can.

Matt - one quibble - Jay Williams broke his body about a week before the draft.  Who was the point guard already on the team?  Are you referring to Jamal Crawford?

BTW, what a complete tool that guy is. #24 is Justin Norwood, what a complete douche for being such a "die hard" and not even knowing one of the more popular wide-outs at that area, especially the home-grown Norwood(he's from State College, PA).

I remember that game. It was my first year there, and that weekend was "Parents week," which basically means most of the students go home for the weekend. There were about 200 of us left in the East halls; the majority of us went to the commons to watch the game. When Robinson ran in for a touchdown, I started to cry( I get emotional when I've had some of the Devils' Juice), this one guy went streaking without his shorts, and this kid started banging his head on the wall. When Michigan scored to win, which was complete and utter bullcrap(a wide-out stepped out of bounds CLEARLY from a 4th and 2... and Carr adding the infamous 3 seconds back), this kid threw a Gatorade bottle to the T.V.,effectively breaking it, which thus started the horrible night that ensued.

That day sucked.

I hope he is working hard on his ball control this summer. About 2 or 3 times a game he trips over his own feet, throws a 10 foot high bullet pass into the crowd, or simply loses the ball out of bounds. He is too good of a player to be making such emberassing mistakes.

Hawes coming back for 2nd workout. per Yahoo
MORE PREDRAFT CHATTER

* The Chicago Bulls are bringing 7-footer Spencer Hawes back to Chicago on Tuesday for a second visit, two league sources said, inspiring belief that they're committed to taking him with the ninth pick. Hawes is a back-to-the-basket center with offensive skills who complements the Bulls' vast perimeter talent. Still, it will be hard to pass up Noah if he's still available at No. 9 for Chicago. "That kid was born to play for Skiles," one Eastern Conference executive said.

by Jesse07 on Jun 26, 2007 8:47 AM CDT reply actions

Great Quote
"The kid was born to play for Skiles."  Maybe the Bulls have a feeling that Noah is going to be off the board come #9.  Lately, I have been really liking the idea of Jason Smith, but not with the #9.

by Jesse07 on Jun 26, 2007 8:51 AM CDT up reply actions

Maybe it's not about a feeling...
...and more about knowing that nothing is guaranteed. It's not like they'll be drafting someone way over slot that will certainly be there. They do need to have contingency plans.

I thought, since right after the Bulls season ended, that Hawes would want some sort of guarantee from a team in the lottery to stay in the draft. My guess is that at least one or two of the lottery teams after the Bulls have told him they'll take him if he's available.

Yes, of course.

Paxson
I am not saying paxson should gut out the team, but I am starting to worry that Paxson is becoming too much about mantaining the status quo and not making trades and keeping the same sort of model of building with winners etc...  If they choose Noah over Hawes or Yi, let it be because he is more talented, not because he won two championships with U of F and he will become Skiles new favorite.  And didn't Yi win a couple of championships in China.  He's also played on national teams.  There's something to be said for that (just like Noce.

I am probably the only one around here who thinks that Gasol trade should have happened (perhaps even with deng, who also happens to be my fav player).  The bulls will probably become eastern conference finals contenders next year and probably for the coming following years, but can we expect someone to come along like Rasheed did for detroit to put us over the hump and actually compete for a championship???? And if so,  how long. I hope this comment isnt outdated and is jsut repeated from the past, but his last few comments from articles like this:

http://www.dailyherald.com/sports/bulls.asp?id=326307

make me worry sometimes about the bulls back opffice.

GMs screw up by thinking this "one guy" is going to put us over the top.  Which leads to bad trades and free agent signings.  And when it goes bad, teams are usually trapped by the salary cap.  As good as I think Gasol is.  He's certainly not that "one guy."  Paxson has exactly one major trade to make with this roster.  Once it happens this team will be trapped by the salary cap.  I don't see how Paxson has denied the Bulls a championship by not making any of previous trades.  I'd rather Paxson be careful and make sure that one trade is the right one.

Hawes
Isn't the most likely scenario for Hawes is being Chris Kaman like?  Is a Chris Kaman like player the answer this team needs?

by Wade.Jones on Jun 26, 2007 1:26 PM CDT reply actions

you don't have to make it complicated
The Bulls need a post scorer, and if Hawes projects to do that effectively in the NBA they should take him. Unless a better player is available, but that's just my opinion. Kaman is a beefy rebounder and shot blocker who isn't terrible at scoring the ball. Hawes has more of a finesse game (for a 7 footer). They are white and tall, but that's where it ends unless Hawes is into Christianity in a big way and owns a crossbow.

Kamen
"Christianity in a big way and owns a crossbow."

Good insight.  My uncle goes to church with him.

I assume Hawes is into Christianity given
his politics, but I doubt it comes with a crossbow.

by Scotter on Jun 26, 2007 2:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Why Chris Kaman?
Because he's tall and white?  Hawes has never been compared to Kaman for any other reason.  Kaman's a big body with a good hook shot, but very limited.  He's a turnover waiting to happen and a blackhole.

What makes Hawes different than Kaman or Mihm or whoever are two things.  A jumpshot and passing ability.  Hawes still has to be guarded 20 feet away from the basket.  Those other guys don't have to be guarded outside of ten feet.  If you want a comparison.  Vlade Divac is the ESPN comparison.  I'll take that.  I think Brad Daugherty is a valid comparison.  I'll take that. There's some similarities with Andrew Bogut.  I'd probably settle for that.

Just a thought
what if the bulls draft jeff green then trade Deng for Gasol.

by eross226 on Jun 26, 2007 2:48 PM CDT reply actions

Thta's been my hope all along.
Draft Green, extend Deng. Once his extension kicks in next year, trade him and one small piece for Gasol.

Deng and his agents might be too smart and, though, and not sign the extension once a SF is drafted. There are a lot of small forwards in the 7-20 range that I think are being overlooked because of all the big men.

I don't think it will happen, but that's what I'd be in favor of.

Yes, of course.

Corey Brewer
NBADRAFT.NET now has the Bull's selecting Brewer.  Can't the draft just be tonight.

John Hollinger
Made a chart on espn that rates the players based on one of his Formulas he has created its pretty intersting.

Some intersting notes...
Hawes is the 30th best player.
McRoberts is the 8
Stuckey is 9
Thaddeus Young is 4

ugh
Acie Law and Spencer Hawes are best to be avoided. Both are viewed as late-lottery picks, but they look like solid second-rounders from here. Hawes has an unimpressive rebound rate, which is a huge red flag considering he was bigger than everyone he played against. And for all the talk of his great post skills, he had a run-of-the-mill 55.0 true shooting percentage and didn't even have the best PER on his mediocre team (that belonged to Jon Brockman). A lot of folks think he can become a quality pro post player; based on his numbers, I just don't see it.

As for Law, his athleticism is a major question mark. He had 39 steals and one block, a pittance for a 6-3 guard. His 5.3 rebound rate is another poor indicator, while his age (22) only adds to the list of negatives. Additionally, Law's pure point ratio was only average, and he doesn't seem to be nearly dangerous enough a scorer to make up for it.

Trade the pick.

more possible Bulls picks pooh-poohed
Jeff Green and Julian Wright don't rate as lottery picks. Though players with a score in the 500 range are usually first-round quality and sometimes become very good, there are far better options to be had in this draft. Wright is a very poor shooter for his size, while Green's athletic markers were surprisingly average.

Matt
You should have a Blogabull hall of fame. I know I would be in that but there are alot of people who have disapeared on here. Its sad.

This whole 9th pick thing has really become lame. I really don't see anyone at 9 that fits in. Maybe packaging the pick is the best idea. If not I might just take a risk and like the Bulls taking Sean Willams. He's got no inside game but maybe he could fill Big Bens spot in a few years. Tyrus and Sean Williams could be scary. Then maybe try to find an inside guy when the time comes. I really don't see much help for the Bulls in terms of inside scoring so why not take a nice shot blocker who can come off the bench. Just a thought don't hit me.
