Kobe to the Bulls? Here is what might be exchanged . . .

You know, any deal that does not involve Deng is alright with me

From Chad Ford . . .

Scenario 1
Arenas isn't Kobe, in talent or stardom. But he is from Los Angeles, he's more than three years younger, he has great magnetism and, like Bryant, he can fill the seats.

With Arenas saying he'll opt out of his contract with Washington next summer, the Wizards might want to start looking at ways to move him now before running the risk of losing him for nothing.

Here's one potential trade, with Bryant headed to Chicago and Arenas to L.A.

The Bulls would send Gordon, Tyrus Thomas and P.J. Brown (sign-and-trade) to Washington, and the No. 9 pick to L.A.

The Lakers would send Bryant to Chicago.

The Wizards would send Arenas and Etan Thomas to L.A.

Under that scenario, which couldn't be completed until mid-July, the Lakers would get a star player (Arenas) and a high draft pick (No. 9) which, I'm told, they'd use to get Yi Jianlian if he's still on the board.

The Bulls would be paying a very high price for Kobe -- two high lottery picks and this year's No. 9. But the Bulls would keep Deng, something they desperately want to do. On the other hand, they still wouldn't have a low-post scorer.

The Wizards would avoid having to break the bank for Arenas next summer, would bring in two very talented young players and would get some serious cap relief down the road.

Scenario 2
A similar trade could work if the Lakers were willing to substitute Boston and Paul Pierce. While Pierce is almost 30 years old, I'm told the Lakers like him -- and he's from L.A. too.

The Bulls would send Gordon, Tyrus Thomas and P.J. Brown (sign-and-trade) to Boston, and the No. 9 pick to L.A.

The Lakers would send Bryant to Chicago.

The Celtics would send Pierce to L.A.

That deal would make the Celtics even younger than they already are, but it would also give them plenty of assets to continue making deals.

I still don't get
how the picks and sign/traded free agents can be dealt at the same time.

Not that I think all the trade and free agency rules are followed absolutely, but this seems too underhanded to agree to a contract before you can even negotiate with a player. Maybe it's easier with your own player, as in this proposed case of PJ Brown.

Either way, that means maybe a Noc (or PJ) sign/trade CAN happen on draft night.

Even Chad Ford....
...said in that piece that it couldn't be completed until mid-July. Then, he goes on to say that the Lakers would use the No. 9 pick to get Yi. What? How? It's all sooooooo confusing.
Yes, of course.

Great, another week of all-Kobe-all-the-time
I was actually pretty excited to have the finals over, thinking we'd finally get the big switchover to heavy duty draft coverage, then here comes Kobe again.  I'm still sick of this story from last time.
[H]e could make a trade more difficult because he has a three-team wish list, the Press Enterprise reported Friday. Two of the teams are the Chicago Bulls and New York Knicks.

One report had the Lakers hoping to acquire Bulls center Ben Wallace, Ben Gordon, Luol Deng and Chicago's No. 1 draft pick (9) for Bryant.

But the sources said every team, including the Bulls, knows the Lakers will try to "gut" a team in order to get as much value as possible for Bryant.

Not that MSNBC is the best source for sports news or anything, but since it's all speculation anyway...

Moral of the story: Don't EVER tell anyone your nickname is "Boobie."

eww That is nasty
but not as nasty as the Cubs game just got.

by SRQman on Jun 16, 2007 1:14 PM CDT up reply actions

the Lakers blew it
when they traded Shaq for peanuts, and traded one of those peanuts (and a not terrible point guard) for Kwame Brown. Surely an Insta-Championship could have brought in a little more talent, even if it was a trade demand. Kupchak is probably salty after getting pantsed in public like that. A little context: Ron Artest has been traded twice for being batshit insane, and those were more or less fair deals; Rose, Peja, and not terrible throw-ins.

I still don't see how trading Kobe to
the Knicks is even a consideration for the Lakers. Sheridan is really reaching here. If I had to trade Kobe the last place I would look is NY. Why would Kobe aprove that anyways? Kobe, Curry, Blackman and Zeke?

Now this is REALLY interesting . . .
To quote Matt,

"This may have some legs."

Ric Bucher writes . . .

Ric Bucher of ESPN reports that Kobe Bryant wants to be traded to either the Bulls, Suns or Knicks.

The Lakers reportedly do not want Bryant to remain within their division and that the Knicks are unlikely to have enough talent to get a deal done, which makes Chicago the prohibitive favorites.

Bucher expects a trade to be completed before the draft.

What do the Bulls have...
...before the draft (and thus before free agent signings) to equal Kobe? Hinrich or Wallace would have to be included. And you know they'll want more than just one of those two (and need it for salary purposes) so that means at least 2 of the 5 starters (probably) plus something? I don't get it.
Yes, of course.

by tyger1147 on Jun 16, 2007 9:55 PM CDT up reply actions

very interesting...
How nice would Kobe, Deng, & Kirk complement eachother's game.  I wonder if the Bulls could add another piece to get the Laker's #19.  I doubt it.

Tyrus, Gordon, & # 9 is a small price to pay for the best player in the game.  I would expect more than 2 championships.

by Jesse07 on Jun 16, 2007 9:53 PM CDT reply actions

No way man...
You still need another $15 million (or thereabouts) to make it work.
Yes, of course.

by tyger1147 on Jun 16, 2007 9:56 PM CDT up reply actions

The problem with
all these Kobe trades is that for one, I don't think a PJ sign and trade is as plausible as people make it out to be, and number two, Gordon (who's the obvious candidate to be traded for someone like Kobe) doesn't make nearly enough so you'd have to include a whole bunch more when you're already giving your leading scorer. Doesn't make sense to me. I'd also worry about team chemistry which I think is undervalued when it comes to success.

by nas on Jun 16, 2007 11:07 PM CDT reply actions

Renouce PJ's Rights
and the team we make a deal with can get an 8 mil trade exception if my interpretation of the CBA rules is correct. So we could then send BG7 and Ty2 along with the trade exception for Kobe if I am not mistaken. Pax should do anything in his power to get Kobe, while keeping Deng. If James and Gibson can win the East by themselves, Kobe, Deng, and 10 undrafted rookies could.

by LD9 on Jun 16, 2007 11:26 PM CDT reply actions

Tyrus
Man, if they trade Tyrus, whom I was just warming up to, I might be pretty pissed.  Im pro kobe and all but trading tyrus after trading chandler the year before will just be upsetting.

by Sambossanova on Jun 17, 2007 1:09 AM CDT reply actions

If that's the deal . . .
Then it's a no-brainer.  The key is to avoid giving up Deng.  If the Bulls were to get Kobe, then they obviously wouldn't need Gordon.  All they'd be giving up in those deals above is Tyrus Thomas, P.J. Brown and the 9th pick.  I don't expect the Lakers to trade Kobe, and even if they did I don't think the Lakers would go for those deals, but we can dream, I guess.

by Big D on Jun 17, 2007 1:30 AM CDT reply actions

I agree
I would much rather send Kirk,BG, and PJ.
Think adding Kirk would give em enough to exchange picks with us, instead of them just taking our #9?
I'd love to somehow still come out with a pick in this draft, and at #16 we could pick up our new PG.

by Ceasaleo on Jun 17, 2007 2:06 AM CDT up reply actions

Who would play point?
Keep duhon??? I dont think Matt could live with that.
Have kobe play point??? You are never getting the ball out of his hands.
Thabo???? It will end up in kobes hands before the pass the half court line.

If you want to see tyrus do amazing dunks, and deng do his THANG, you gotta have hinrich there to make them look good.

im trying hard to become the next kirk hinrich, therefore im doing nothing more than being the next chris duhon.

by piccolomair on Jun 17, 2007 2:28 AM CDT up reply actions

I believe Kirk is still in the
poison pill stage until July 1, after the draft, so that would be complicated salary-wise.

And beyond that, I think the Bulls lose too much trading Kirk, but then I'm also against trading for Kobe.  I see it totally killing team chemistry - jmho.

I don't think anyone
is going to tear up like Steve Francis did over losing Mobley, but Kobe will put plenty of players into spectator mode while he shoots, shoots, and shoots some more.

by Paxson Jackson @ Blog a Bull on Jun 17, 2007 1:35 PM CDT up reply actions

I suppose I should more accurately say
he would kill the team style of playing, which is part of what I love about the Bulls.

I'd hate to see the guys devolve into the Bryants - there's enough of that watching LeBron and the Jamesons when the Cavs are on.

Yep
Buckle your seatbelts kids. It's going to be a bumpy couple of weeks.

by sue369 on Jun 17, 2007 2:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed.
I like winning more than anything, and I don't mind "selfish" players on bad teams. But I like watching how this team plays. That said, they're still a below-average offense, and Kobe over Gordon is an improvement on offense and defense.

It's impossible, but a straight Kobe for Gordon swap would make this team the best in the East, and a "top team" in the NBA. (I know that's a big "duh", but still.)

Yes, of course.

And to man the other team's superstar guard. Kirk is the best guard perimeter in the league.

by Ronald on Jun 17, 2007 6:36 AM CDT up reply actions

you know
it just seems like Kobe said, "jump," and Kupchak responded by doing absolutely nothing in the past three weeks. The Lakers have a decent trade asset in Bynum, and Brown's expiring contract is a hefty 9 million. I don't think it's a stretch to say they could get Andre Miller, Maggette, Sheed, or work a 3 team deal and get Steve Francis. There is veteran talent out there. I'm not even concerned about how any of those players would play with Kobe. I'm assuming they would play well no matter what. Grant Hill would be a nice MLE pickup for them too.

No
because of Kobe acting like a malcontent until he gets traded part. I dont think the Lakers would trade their gate attraction unless he didnt want to perform.

by LD9 on Jun 17, 2007 12:14 PM CDT up reply actions

a 'stir'
is pretty much what's going on now. Kobe has been a malcontent for several years.

by Paxson Jackson @ Blog a Bull on Jun 17, 2007 12:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Arenas
Yes, Kobe is awesome.  But maybe we should go after Arenas instead since he is available.  Maybe we don't have to get rid of Tyrus in such a deal.  At 6'4 we add a little size.  Which guard to get rid of?  Arenas CAN play the 2 guard or the 1.  Arenas and Hinrich in the same backcourt or Arenas and Gordon...  either one is better.  (i prefer the latter)  Arenas is definitely one of the best players in the league and probably a lot cheaper than Kobe.

Then we should get a big man...

Look
Arenas is definitely not available.  Just because you plan on opting out doesn't mean you want to leave.

Chad's definitely reaching here.  I can't see any reason why the Wizards would do this deal.  The only way they'd ever agree is if they got the 9 pick instead of LA.

He's also not cheaper than Kobe if he signs a max deal as expected.

Because
they would rather have tyrus than nocioni...unfortunately.  Thomas is more desirable to the Lakers and they would be giving up Kobe after all.  Yeah, I don't want to get rid of Thomas either.

More Kobe Craziness...
"LOS ANGELES -- Kobe Bryant posted a message on his Web page Sunday strongly suggesting the superstar wanted to be traded from the Lakers.

'When you love something as much as I love the Lakers its [sic] hard to even imagine thinking about being elsewhere," he wrote on his Web site, kb24.com. "But, the ONE THING I will never sacrifice when it comes to basketball is WINNING.'

The two-time scoring champion also wrote: 'The more I thought about the future, the more I became convinced that the Lakers and me just have two different visions for the future.'"
