NBA Draft Lottery thread

I'm going to miss actively rooting against the Knicks. Sure, I suppose most of us will always root against them, but the past two years have been extra special knowing their pick was coming to the Bulls.

Tonight's the potential payoff of all that hate, and this article from Celtics.com breaks the whole lottery process down for ya. Here's all you need to know for the Bulls chances:

Chance of top pick: 1.9%
Chance of 2nd pick: 2.2%
Chance of 3rd pick: 2.7%
Chance of any top 2 pick: 4.1%
Chance of any top 3 pick: 6.8%

Would've been better odds if not for a meaningless Knicks win on the last day of the season, but ah well. The more likely odds are as follows:

Chance of 9th pick: 78%
Chance of 10th pick: 14%
(11th and 12th picks each < 1%)

I have no special rooting interest beyond the Bulls in this lottery, and especially don't believe in any such crap about what teams 'deserve' to win. Like any lottery, who deserves it has nothing to do with the matter (unless you think it's fixed, in which case you should turn off your computer, walk outside, and eventually make your way into oncoming traffic). Any team that has a great shot at a top pick likely did it by bungling their roster, so none of them really 'deserve' it.  Except the Bulls (and the Suns) of course!

The best part is that we will soon no longer need that caveat of "unless they get a top-2 pick" when discussing the Bulls and other team's needs this offseason. After tonight, the trade scenarios and mock drafts can get real interesting.

So like Mr. Shanwald, make sure you have your lucky Krause pennies and enjoy the overblown coverage. Chances aren't great, but thanks to Pax (and, of course, Isiah) at least we all have a rooting interest in a night for losers.

what's good for the NBA?

by Paxson Jackson on May 22, 2007 1:14 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

NBA's always good
But if I did care...maybe hoping that both top picks go to the Eastern Conference.

But that potentially screws the Bulls, so scratch that.

I forgot, the league NEEDS the Celtics to be good ::barf::

there are millions of bandwagon
fans just waiting to jump on board a Celtic-green resurgence. And don't forget Sportscenter would be awesome if Knicks and Celtics coverage replaced that dull stuff in between Patriots, Yankees, and Red Sox coverage.

age limit came too soon
If the NBA allowed high school players to come out last year, we wouldnt even be caring about this lottery.

The Bulls owned the 2nd pick and most likely Oden or Durant woulda been there at 2 last year.

IMHO, the Bulls have had no draft luck recently.
In the magnificent drafts, they get picks that are just outside the range that would give them a spectacular player (e.g. 2003).

Meanwhile, they get extremely high picks in terrible or mediocre drafts.

Unless they get extremely fortunate tonight, they will once again miss out on franchise players.

The Conspiracy Draft Lottery
I don't believe for one moment in any draft conspiracies, but let me temporarily adopt the position of a conspiracy theorist in order to conduct an experiment.

The consensus is that the Western Conference is vastly superior than the Eastern Conference at this point in time. Moreover, there are few superstars in the East. Presumably, the league wants to maintain balance, so the top two picks should go to Eastern conference teams. However, the analysis is complicated somewhat by the fact that the NBA may be motivated to "save" basketball in Seattle, a major west coast market.

Conspiracy factors obviously suggests that Boston will get the number one pick. They are in the Eastern Conference, they have a rich history, and they are a major east coast city.

Therefore, under the conspiracy theory, Boston gets the number one pick.

It's not as clear who the NBA would want to recieve the number two pick. (This conspiracy is hard to manage!) On the one hand, Milwaukee is in the Eastern conference. However, it's a smallish city and the NBA may not like the notion of having multiple superstars in an already stacked Central Division. Sorry Bucks.

Next up for consideration is Atlanta. They are in the Eastern conference and their attendence is sagging.  Once upon a time, they had Nique. However, the fan support is pathetic even in decent years and the management is suspect. Does the NBA want to entrust one of its young crown jewels to the guys that drafted Sheldon "Wookie" Williams in the five spot last year? Probably not. Sounds like it's another season of 3,000 person crowds at the magnificent Phillips Arena, part stadium, part teeny-bopper mall.

That brings us to Seattle. They aren't in the Eastern Conference, but the franchise is in jeopardy. Additionally, the perception around the league is that Seattle has "great" fans.  It's a close call, but Stern gives the second pick to Seattle after covert market studies indicate that a team in Oklahoma City would not appeal to the thuggish sensibilities of most NBA players and fans. As one lower level NBA exec puts it, "Fitty cent in Oklahoma just means two quarters."

The third pick goes to an Eastern Conference team as a consolation prize. The League wants Phoenix to get the fourth pick because, more than anything, it is tired of seeing the boring Spurs in the Finals. Stern still weeps when he reflects on the 6.5 Nielson rating the FInals garnered in 2003.  Atlanta is foiled again. Hence, Milwaukee gets the third pick by default.

Results of The Conspiracy Draft Lottery:

(1) Boston;
(2) Seattle;
(3) Milwaukee.

Memphis, not surprisingly, is the big loser.

Let's see if that stands up tonight.

Anyone remeber the Lew Alcindor draft???
There was a lot of speculation that the draft was fixed.  Our own Red Kerr was the coach of GS I think, and apparently the draft position decision was made by a coin flip.  Whats more strange is the fact that the teams were notified by phone call.  The involved parties were not even present to see the coin flip.  Sure, the nba is not rigged!

And Memphis
has to look at a very unhappy Gasol.  They might have been able to persuade him with the 1-2 pick...but I'm willing to bet he'll be pulling pretty hard to get out of there now.  Will their new GM decide to start from scratch?

All in all, other than not getting in top 3, this was actually a pretty good night for the Bulls.

Hopefully this will discourage teams from tanking
For all the talk about how the system needed to be changed, it actually works pretty well to discourage tanking (even the worst team only has a 25 percent chance of getting the top pick).  Some teams were obviously too dumb to realize that tanking isn't really worth it mathematically (as John Hollinger said several months ago), but hopefully now they'll get the idea.

If only the bulls had beaten the Knicks
in December.  Not only would the Knicks have tied the Trailblazers and presumably won the first pick, but the Bulls would have been the second seed and still be playing right now.  The moral is obvious: Don't Lose.  Ever.
FEAR THE ROOKIES!

Without a top 3 pick, Bulls win BIG today!
These are reasons the Bulls came out huge today
  1. Both Durant and Oden end up on Western Conference teams. Won't have to worry about going through them anytime soon to get to the Finals. But the West got a lot better, as if it needed to.
  2. Memphis drops to 4th. Gasol will most likely shipped away now due to Memphis not getting a top 2 pick. Most likely, for a cheaper price. The Bulls can perhaps pull off an offer now that doesn't include any of the core. I don't see how other teams can match an offer of something like the 9th pick, Duhon, Nocioni and Sefolosha for Gasol. I'm sure the salaries don't match but I'm just thinking out loud here.
  3. Atlanta gets the 3rd pick. If the Atlanta pick went to Phoenix, we would maybe be looking at a dynasty over there in Arizona. Something that would be in the way of Chicago getting a title maybe anytime soon. Also, Atlanta has a way of fucking up picks.
  4. The Celtics and Bucks fall to 6th and 7th. This was a Doomsday scenario for both franchises. Both teams were one player away maybe being something in the East. Both teams superstars were out for most of the season which attributed to their poor records. A combo of Pierce and Oden/Durant or Redd and Oden/Durant would certainly be something to see for both teams. Keeps the road to the title a tad bit easier for the Bulls
  5. Portland winning the whole lottery. If Oden is truly their guy, Aldrige or Randolph has to be on the block, right?
All in all, I'm very happy with today's lottery. To me, it was a best case situation for the Bulls if they didn't land in the top 3.

Let the real mock draft finally begin . . .

Don't see why they get rid of Zach
That's a pretty solid three man rotation.  Maybe next year after Oden has adjusted.  But they don't get rid of Zach right away.
Don't Lose. Ever.!

I'm inclined to agree
Having Aldridge as the backup 4/5 is a pretty nice luxury, and Oden allows Randolph to stay on the floor despite his defensive suckitude.

But they know more about Randolph than we do, and may want him out of town at the first possible opportunity just for addition-by-subtraction.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on May 22, 2007 8:54 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

one less Jailblazer,
and there's the whole Conley at #9 thing (which I admit is a little bit of a stretch, but possible). Portland has Joel Przybilla too, and I assume him or Randolph get traded to make room for Oden. JP makes sense as a backup big for the Bulls.

by Paxson Jackson on May 22, 2007 9:15 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

they still have Miles, right?
the only way I seem them giving up Randolph is if someone agrees to take Miles, which is the guy they probably want to get rid of now.  Who knows, maybe Randolph comes to Chicago and decides he likes to camp out in the post.  The games I saw he was mostly jacking up 18 footers.  And the Bulls don't need more jumpshooters.  But if anybody has been paying attention, you don't run out 2 underage big men and count on them to take you to the next level...
Don't Lose. Ever.!

by bullshooter on May 22, 2007 9:31 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

there's no 'next level' pressure
on that team next season, and maybe even the next few. They're not in the midst of early to middle playoff exits like the Bulls.

Miles and Randolph are a 20 million dollar plus (next season) combination of injuries and off court issues. No team is going to take both of them. Randolph does shoot too many jumpers, his eFG% leaves something to be desired, and he turns it over. He is still a very good post scorer, rebounder, his fouling is down, and his passing is improving. He went to the line at a 7.9 FTA/40 clip last season too. If he was on the Bulls, he probably could be more efficient. He wouldn't have to be the main scorer every night, and the Bulls can probably get the ball to him in the post a lot better than Portland did.

I like the positive posts!
I'll keep it going....a lot of posters have mentioned Eddy Curry costing the Bulls by beating the Bobcats at the buzzer the last game of the season.  If Curry would've been doing that more in the first 81 games, then maybe the Bulls would be picking 16 or 17, instead of 9!

Also, if David Lee, Quentin Richardson, Stephon Marbury and Jamal Crawford not all gone down with injuries the last month or two of the season, we wouldn't be having this discussion.  The Knicks were  going against 10-12 teams TRYING to lose, and still worked their way down the standings.  There should still be 2-3 quality big men left for Pax to choose from at #9.

by MMP on May 22, 2007 9:00 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Aldridge
If the Blazers are smart they keep Aldridge and pick Oden, maybe keep Randolph.  Having at least 2 good young big guys is a position every team in the NBA would die for.  Just because they presumably will have Oden doesn't mean they should unload their other bigs.

jomot3  (5/22/2007 at 8:36 PM)

The eastern conference is starving for more superstars yet the two best rookies to be will play in pacific northwest....ABC/ESPN enjoy those 0.2 ratings cuz no one will watch. Having one fo those two in Boston the NBA ratings would have gone up remember when Celts Lakers were the draw. I agree the Lottery needs to go away it is fixed always has been and you can't prove to me it isn't. The NFL system couldnt work because tanking would still occur. how about a 14 team non playoff tournament. the final 2 teams left standing play for the #1 pick....so you how about this: you earn the right to draft 1st!!! NBA goodbye you are corrupt enjoy that Spurs detroit final and that 0.9 rating.

by Big D on May 22, 2007 8:44 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

So the teams that can't get their act together
to make the playoffs are suppose to suddenly find the ability to compete in the NBA version of the NIT?  And that would have improved the Celt's chances over pure luck how?
Who says it can't be done?

What a truly moronic idea.
LMAO.

How would teams who acquire picks by trade participate? How, for example, could the Bulls play in ft the playoffs and the draft tourney? Or would the Knicks play and tank the game because they have no incentive to win?

The Celtics fans have lost it.

by 1958ChiTown on May 22, 2007 8:56 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Clearly the NBA fixed the lottery . . .
To ensure that Oden and Durant would end up in the Pacific Northwest, where many of their games will be played after half the country has already gone to bed.  If anything, this should be proof that the lottery isn't fixed.

Ifoster0130  (5/22/2007 at 9:09 PM)

if the celtics do not get durant, oden, or kevin garnett i will throw an absolute ** fit. I live in Boston and I only watch the celtics a little, but this is getting ridiculous and the entire city is being disrespected, abused and im sick of it. the media will have a field day with this b*** but i dont care about that crap. the duncan draft was more acceptable than this. if they dont get rid of the lottery after this i may just seriously injure david stern personally. he will bleed..... a lot.

Maybe someone ought to contact law enforcement on this guy.

by Big D on May 22, 2007 9:20 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nothing against the Celtics
but Danny Ainge has raised whining to an art form, and he was, after all, the man who said (after one game two years ago when Tony Allen blocked Ben Gordon's shot) that "he wouldn't trade Allen for Gordon straight up."

by Freethefro on May 22, 2007 10:15 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No joy for the Bulls.
Another special draft where the Bulls will be on the outside looking in.

Don't worry, though, we'll get someone who tries real hard during the regular season.

Yippee.

(OK, I'm stilled pissed about last Thursday. I admit it. I understand some of the incidental benefits outlined above, but those pale in comparison to the prospect of getting a star player to build on.)

So much for the conspiracy theories. Both of the burgeoning young stars are headed out west.

The only good thing that could come of this lottery is Bill Simmons' suicide.

by 1958ChiTown on May 22, 2007 8:53 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

They will pick
a talented player who will contribute immediately. The draft is deep enough where the 9th pick will be very good, probably better than any top 5 pick from the last 2 years. There are plenty of low-post scorers like Hibbert and all arond talents like Green to chose from. Yi falling to 9th will be a complete steal, so we will see what happens. Dealing the pick for a legit talent is a possibility.

by vlad001 on May 22, 2007 9:13 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

HA!
Celtics fans are talking about the Bulls giving them the 9th and Gordon for Pierce.  No way...Pierce is fat and old and Gordon doesn't deserve to be shipped to the Celtics.

by goldengod on May 22, 2007 9:00 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Who will be available at 9?

Ignoring the first 2 obvious picks, who do you think will be available to us?

by bullsfaninbigapple on May 22, 2007 9:22 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

fellow Bulls fan in the big apple-
Hawes and, hopefully, Hibbert as centers.  There are also a boatload of excellent small forwards that may fall - I think Jeff Green (who I got to see a few times) will be a superb pro.  He's also the kind of unselfish, defensive minded player Pax and Co seem to like...so if we do end up trading Deng (say it ain't so) for somebody big (literally and figuratively) he would be an admirable replacement.  Though of course none of the small forwards who just might be available (Green or J. Wright) have Luol's mid-range game or sterling personality.

As for B. Wright, Horford, Brewer, and Yi...I have the feeling they'll be long gone...

There's no reason to be sad
When the Bulls made that Eddy Curry trade back in 2005, how many people thought they'd be getting the 2nd pick in last year's draft, and the 9th pick in this year's draft?  Hell, most people on here (including myself) were more excited about getting Michael Sweetney, because his per-minute numbers were so good in New York.  Obviously no one realized that he resembled the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man, but no one imagined that the Knicks would be so bad either.  It would have been nice to get Oden or Durant, but there was such a slim chance of getting one of the top two picks that it's silly to be upset about it.  Pax has got as good a track record in the draft as any GM in the league, and this is one of the deepest drafts in years, so there's no reason to beleive he won't come up with someone who can help the Bulls.

Chad Ford's mock draft is up . . .
http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/draft2007/insider/columns/story?columnist=ford_chad&page=MockDraf t-070522

I know it's an Insider article, so I'll just post the most pertinent tidbits.  He has the Bulls taking Spencer Hawes at #9, but says "The Bulls really want Yi, so don't be surprised if they try to move up a few spots in the draft to get him."

by Big D on May 22, 2007 9:48 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Indeed
always fetishizing the Other, that Chad Ford.

:shameful headshake:

by Freethefro on May 22, 2007 9:51 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I was going in the direction
of Chad Ford's quest to have international bigs on every team, and starting at all 5 positions. He's probably holding back with Yi (translates to Brad Sellers or Pat Garrity; my Mandarin sucks) mock drafted at 9.

by Paxson Jackson on May 22, 2007 10:10 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He just wants him on a mainstage...
...so he can talk about him more.

And Yi is no Garrity.

Yes, of course.

by tyger1147 on May 22, 2007 10:11 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Why the hell would the Bulls want Yi?
He may be seven feet tall, but he has absolutely no post game whatsoever. He isn't a post scorer. He is another jump shooter, for the most part.

Wow, I can't wait to see Hawes in a Bulls uniform. He's an amazing athletic specimen. Will he be as dominating as Will Purdue?

None of the players available at nine excite me, frankly.

by 1958ChiTown on May 22, 2007 9:53 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hawes
is a wuss.  Unathletic, obviously doesn't lift weights, can shoot but we have shooters.  If Bulls go big they should draft Hibbert if both are there.  If only Hawes I still say no.

by goldengod on May 22, 2007 9:54 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hawes is only 19
And had some nasty infection where he dropped a bunch of weight during the year.  He's still developing and could be a good player for the Bulls, but I'd rather have someone more ready at this point.
I love you Ben, you almost make me forget about...tacos.

by eddiew23 on May 22, 2007 10:00 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

True but,
I like Hibbert because he is at least big enough to get inside position in the NBA, and has shown that he can score when getting there.  More importantly, unlike when we had Curry he knows when and where to pass out of the double team.  I think Gordon, Hinrich and Deng would like that at this point.

by goldengod on May 22, 2007 10:05 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with your assessment of Hawes.
But I sincerely doubt that anyone would need to double up Hibbert in the post.

by 1958ChiTown on May 22, 2007 10:16 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Who
then at the Bulls pick if they were to not trade?  I think of the likely players left at 9 Hibbert would be best for them, but obviously who knows.  Still, fun because the team is already pretty good and getting better anyway.  Are there any others other than Hibbert or Hawes who would be better for the Bulls at 9?

by goldengod on May 22, 2007 10:27 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't necessarily disagree with your
opinion concerning who the Bulls should pick at 9.

If Hibbert is there, I imagine they will take him.

I am just saying that I doubt the nine pick will add much to the Bulls.

We better hope for some dramatic internal development, especially from Tyrus.

by 1958ChiTown on May 22, 2007 10:30 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yup
Who they have now is what really matters for next season.  This is just a nice bonus check from the Knicks.

The good news is
we may have a shot at a Noah/Wallace front court.  They may not be able to hit a shot, but imagine the sheer exuberance of the follicles!

by Freethefro on May 22, 2007 10:21 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

God no
We already have a much more athletic version of him named Tyrus Thomas.

by Big D on May 22, 2007 10:26 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

All I'm saying
is that the sheer amount of hair would be incredible.  We would have the most hirsute frontcourt in NBA history.  And when we pair up Tyrus, Noah and Nocioni the spaz factor would be off the charts.

Granted I do not want to see Noah a Bull.  Ever.

chad ford on the knicks
The skinny: Williams was ranked as a late-lottery prospect by many NBA scouts before he was dismissed from Boston College at midseason. Everyone knows he has had off-court issues, but this late in the draft someone is going to pull the trigger on the best shot-blocker in the draft.

Knicks president Isiah Thomas seems like the perfect candidate.

HAHAHAH!

Yeah....
....because the Bulls didn't wait the six years on Curry to develop into whatever he is, but we shouldn't wait at all on Tyrus or whatever happens with this pick to see what happens.

Can't be
a win for the Knicks if all they do is lose.  They haven't won with Curry yet and I don't see them doing so in the near future.  Bulls just haven't won AS MUCH as they potentially could have is all.  Bulls beat the Knicks again.
