NBA Draft Lottery thread

I'm going to miss actively rooting against the Knicks. Sure, I suppose most of us will always root against them, but the past two years have been extra special knowing their pick was coming to the Bulls.

Tonight's the potential payoff of all that hate, and this article from Celtics.com breaks the whole lottery process down for ya. Here's all you need to know for the Bulls chances:

Chance of top pick: 1.9%
Chance of 2nd pick: 2.2%
Chance of 3rd pick: 2.7%
Chance of any top 2 pick: 4.1%
Chance of any top 3 pick: 6.8%

Would've been better odds if not for a meaningless Knicks win on the last day of the season, but ah well. The more likely odds are as follows:

Chance of 9th pick: 78%
Chance of 10th pick: 14%
(11th and 12th picks each < 1%)

I have no special rooting interest beyond the Bulls in this lottery, and especially don't believe in any such crap about what teams 'deserve' to win. Like any lottery, who deserves it has nothing to do with the matter (unless you think it's fixed, in which case you should turn off your computer, walk outside, and eventually make your way into oncoming traffic). Any team that has a great shot at a top pick likely did it by bungling their roster, so none of them really 'deserve' it.  Except the Bulls (and the Suns) of course!

The best part is that we will soon no longer need that caveat of "unless they get a top-2 pick" when discussing the Bulls and other team's needs this offseason. After tonight, the trade scenarios and mock drafts can get real interesting.

So like Mr. Shanwald, make sure you have your lucky Krause pennies and enjoy the overblown coverage. Chances aren't great, but thanks to Pax (and, of course, Isiah) at least we all have a rooting interest in a night for losers.

is taking pictures of the office staff's kids and grandkids as his good luck charms.  He was on the Score this morning calling from the airport as he and Matt Yob were waiting for their flight to lovely New Jersey.

Think Pax is going to watch from the comfort of his north suburban home?

You don't care about
what's good for the NBA?

by Paxson Jackson on May 22, 2007 1:14 PM CDT   0 recs

NBA's always good
But if I did care...maybe hoping that both top picks go to the Eastern Conference.

But that potentially screws the Bulls, so scratch that.

I forgot, the league NEEDS the Celtics to be good ::barf::

by your friendly BullsBlogger on May 22, 2007 1:19 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

there are millions of bandwagon
fans just waiting to jump on board a Celtic-green resurgence. And don't forget Sportscenter would be awesome if Knicks and Celtics coverage replaced that dull stuff in between Patriots, Yankees, and Red Sox coverage.

by Paxson Jackson on May 22, 2007 1:25 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

age limit came too soon
If the NBA allowed high school players to come out last year, we wouldnt even be caring about this lottery.

The Bulls owned the 2nd pick and most likely Oden or Durant woulda been there at 2 last year.

IMHO, the Bulls have had no draft luck recently.
In the magnificent drafts, they get picks that are just outside the range that would give them a spectacular player (e.g. 2003).

Meanwhile, they get extremely high picks in terrible or mediocre drafts.

Unless they get extremely fortunate tonight, they will once again miss out on franchise players.

Kirk and Ty disagree
And for that matter, so does BG (#3 in 2004).
Who says it can't be done?

What time?
What time is the lotto tonight???

Tomorrow is my b-day.  Last year, Isiah got me a 2nd pick.  Let's see if he went shopping a day early for me this time...

What are the odds of wining?
Interesting bit on ESPN about the chances of the Bulls winning the lottery.  About as good as the Bills or Vikings winning a Superbowl.

False!
Anyone by the name of Skip has NEVER made a great point. A few good ones here and there. But never great. You take that back.
Yes, of course.

The Conspiracy Draft Lottery
I don't believe for one moment in any draft conspiracies, but let me temporarily adopt the position of a conspiracy theorist in order to conduct an experiment.

The consensus is that the Western Conference is vastly superior than the Eastern Conference at this point in time. Moreover, there are few superstars in the East. Presumably, the league wants to maintain balance, so the top two picks should go to Eastern conference teams. However, the analysis is complicated somewhat by the fact that the NBA may be motivated to "save" basketball in Seattle, a major west coast market.

Conspiracy factors obviously suggests that Boston will get the number one pick. They are in the Eastern Conference, they have a rich history, and they are a major east coast city.

Therefore, under the conspiracy theory, Boston gets the number one pick.

It's not as clear who the NBA would want to recieve the number two pick. (This conspiracy is hard to manage!) On the one hand, Milwaukee is in the Eastern conference. However, it's a smallish city and the NBA may not like the notion of having multiple superstars in an already stacked Central Division. Sorry Bucks.

Next up for consideration is Atlanta. They are in the Eastern conference and their attendence is sagging.  Once upon a time, they had Nique. However, the fan support is pathetic even in decent years and the management is suspect. Does the NBA want to entrust one of its young crown jewels to the guys that drafted Sheldon "Wookie" Williams in the five spot last year? Probably not. Sounds like it's another season of 3,000 person crowds at the magnificent Phillips Arena, part stadium, part teeny-bopper mall.

That brings us to Seattle. They aren't in the Eastern Conference, but the franchise is in jeopardy. Additionally, the perception around the league is that Seattle has "great" fans.  It's a close call, but Stern gives the second pick to Seattle after covert market studies indicate that a team in Oklahoma City would not appeal to the thuggish sensibilities of most NBA players and fans. As one lower level NBA exec puts it, "Fitty cent in Oklahoma just means two quarters."

The third pick goes to an Eastern Conference team as a consolation prize. The League wants Phoenix to get the fourth pick because, more than anything, it is tired of seeing the boring Spurs in the Finals. Stern still weeps when he reflects on the 6.5 Nielson rating the FInals garnered in 2003.  Atlanta is foiled again. Hence, Milwaukee gets the third pick by default.

Results of The Conspiracy Draft Lottery:

(1) Boston;
(2) Seattle;
(3) Milwaukee.

Memphis, not surprisingly, is the big loser.

Let's see if that stands up tonight.

by 1958ChiTown on May 22, 2007 2:46 PM CDT   0 recs

Is this correct - - - if we are not called after
the 9th pick by the ping-pong balls we are guaranteed a top 3 pick?

by chgobr on May 22, 2007 3:00 PM CDT   0 recs

They'll count down the picks from
14 to 1.

If number nine comes and goes without the Bulls name being called, it means they are in the top three.

by 1958ChiTown on May 22, 2007 3:02 PM CDT   0 recs

If Bulls can't get Oden then plese let him end up
in the West.  I'd enjoy Oden playing Duncan and Yao 4 times each much better than Oden playing the Bulls 4 times.

by Scotter on May 22, 2007 3:07 PM CDT   0 recs

Bah
some of the Greatest Bulls' Victories were over Ewing.  Do you think Oden will be better than Ewing?  Doesn't matter anyway, Bulls are moving up tonight.

Anyone remeber the Lew Alcindor draft???
There was a lot of speculation that the draft was fixed.  Our own Red Kerr was the coach of GS I think, and apparently the draft position decision was made by a coin flip.  Whats more strange is the fact that the teams were notified by phone call.  The involved parties were not even present to see the coin flip.  Sure, the nba is not rigged!

Bulls to aquire Amare Stoudemire from PHX?
Bulls may be involved in a 3 way deal which would send KG to Phx and Amare here.

by DannyRange on May 22, 2007 4:57 PM CDT   0 recs

yea
i just watched espn PTI where i heard the rumor.  All crazy rumors for now.  A deal like that wouldnt happen for a while and the suns probably would rather get rid of marion not amare. It be awesome and would probably work best if bulls land top three pick.

by Sambossanova on May 22, 2007 5:02 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

more than crazy
It's tough to swallow trade nonsense like that before the balls are even bouncing.

by Paxson Jackson on May 22, 2007 5:04 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

and who would we give up?
(I just don't think it's possible to get Amare, but hey, why the heck not?)

lottery time frame
is this lottery thing gonna take an hour for no reason or is  it just a half hour like it should be?

by Sambossanova on May 22, 2007 5:03 PM CDT   0 recs

I recall the last drawing or whatever
was pretty much to the point. I remember hoping the Bulls would get #2 so they could take Thomas (obligatory I was right about Tyrus comment, feel free to ignore it).

Draft position is pre determined
I hear before they go on air, they have the draft backstage, then have the show for the fans.  You can almost read into the gm's mannerisms to see their draft position.

by DannyRange on May 22, 2007 5:13 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

You mean the lottery?
That's done backstage in a room beforehand. But the GM's don't know.
Yes, of course.

If the Bulls get Oden Isah Thomas will be fired on the spot?

I think I'm pulling for the Blazers right now.

by wjb1492 on May 22, 2007 7:52 PM CDT   0 recs

well since the Bulls are out of the running
I have to say I'm somewhat pleased that it's hawks/blazers/sonics. Dunno....just seems right that all that tank talk got nothing for the grizzle, the bucks, and the Gerald Green team.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on May 22, 2007 7:52 PM CDT   0 recs

damn it
that last game where eddy curry beat the bobcats. I think we would have ended up where the sonics are right now.

by Sambossanova on May 22, 2007 7:52 PM CDT   0 recs

Atlanta already has the Pacers pick
so they get two in the top eleven. Conley and Oden, perhaps? (or two 6'9" forwards)

by your friendly BullsBlogger on May 22, 2007 7:52 PM CDT   0 recs

it's sick
but I hope they get Durant.

by Paxson Jackson on May 22, 2007 7:53 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

9th pick.
Solid. Solid. Solid. How about Memphis and Boston? They got SHAFTED by the Karma Police for all their tanking. Serves 'em right.

by vlad001 on May 22, 2007 7:52 PM CDT   0 recs

It would only be right for Atlanta to get the 2
and add to their core of identical players.

by ChrisRobin on May 22, 2007 10:35 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I think Joel is more likely.
He'll come a lot cheaper (money and traded value), be a legit 7-footer with some game. That's what I'm looking for from Portland; not randolph.
Yes, of course.

by Big D on May 22, 2007 7:54 PM CDT   0 recs

portlands gonna be sooo good
but maybe they're looking to unload randolph....and seattle has to be happy about durant.....all those 7 footers as it is
