Are the Pistons not a team of stars, but just one?

Just how important is Chauncey Billups to this Pistons team? He was the only Piston this season with a PER over 20 (sorry Watson, Amir Johnson doesn't count) and is a premier defender at his position. Most importantly, Billups leads the team and is usually the guy with the ball when they need a score, and that score often comes from the foul line.

I'd go on, but Justin Lyons at NBA.com does a nice job going over how the switch of Hinrich on Billups may have helped derail the Pistons. Even if Chauncey doesn't get in foul trouble like he has the past couple of games, merely slowing him is a big step towards slowing his team.

Hinrich's foul trouble on Billups
I think its been clear for some time that Billups is the 'straw that stirs the drink' in Detroit, setting everybody up and using his strength to bully defenders to the basket.  Phil Jackson, in his book, said that the Lakers realized too late that they should have focused on disrupting Billups instead of Hamilton.  But I'm worried that Kirk will pick up too many fouls.  He often gambles by flopping (which is legitimate- if the only way they're gonna call a charge is if the defender falls, then I understand why a defender would fall).  Sometimes he gets the call, sometimes he doesn't.  We saw how critical Kirk can be for the Bulls offense with his penetration, and I don't want to lose him for extended periods of time.  If Hinrich can tone it down, keeping himself on the floor (but giving up an extra basket or two) I think the move becomes a good one, because he'll still force Billups to work more and be less efficient that he would be against Gordon.

yep
Billups gets more than his fair share of calls. Hinrich's value has a lot to do with his defense, and he's better at playing with fouls than Gordon.

Pretty interesting that Gordon ranks tenth
in terms of drawing personal fouls, but he isn't even in the top 20 in terms of drawing shooting fouls.

I suppose he does get fouled a lot off the dribble and on screens out at the three point line.

Thinking about it...
I'd have to agree.  Hamilton is a weapon, not a superstar.  If you're going to take the Reggie Miller Runaround means to stardom, it means you'd better make some 3's to make it to the top.  His eFG has always been held back by his inability to make threes.  That's why Chauncey has been above or near .500 pct for the last 6 years.  In addition to the free throw attempts differential, the distribution and the defense, it makes Billups a much bigger threat.

Rasheed is the most talented player...
on the Detroit roster, but he's too volatile and lazy to be the leader.  Billups and his thug strut is, if nothing else, what gives the Pistons their team attitude.

If Rasheed ever decided to put in the effort to run more than just 3-point line to 3-point line and demand the ball a little on offense, he could easily average 25 & 10.  I salivate to think of combining Tyrus' energy and athleticism with Rasheed's shooting touch (which hopefully a good summer's workout regiment will help do).

Give Billups his due, but no adequate backup
Yes, I agree that Billups is the straw that stirs the drink.  At least in my limited view, the Pistons have had a noticeable dropoff all season when he's not out there.

Which maybe shows a flaw in Dumars plan for the team, in failing to have a backup that is no more than a 15 minute a game player when playing a higher level team. Who knew that in the Darko trade that it would be Carlos Arroyo that the Pistons would miss most?  Although the Bulls also have a noticeable dropoff when Hinrich is out or playing poorly, credit Pax for Duhon, Thabo, and to a lesser extent, Gordon when he moves over to the 1 slot.

by GWKD on May 17, 2007 9:12 AM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

gah, yes
I neglected to point that out, having no backup is part of his worth to the Pistons as well. Lindsey Hunter did have a good game1 though, if I remember correctly. But that's been a long-standing problem with the Pistons bench.

It's kind of a catch-22
If you have a guy who is as good as Billups and plays 40 minutes a night, you'd have to have a pretty stacked team to bring in a backup with anywhere near the production for 10-15 minutes a night.  The pistons biggest problem is that their best play the last couple of games has been to isolate Billups and have him shoot his jab-step 3.

From Justin Lyons...
Kirk Hinrich, the Bulls best defender

One-on-one? Perimeter? Ben Wallace might think there needs to be another adjective.

Am I the only one who is extraordinarily excited
tonight's game?

I am not afraid to say it, I may weep if we lose. Ok, I won't weep, but at the very least, I will be depressed for a few hours. I still remember how sad it was when we lost Game 6 to the Heat last season at home.

I don't think we can win this series, but I just want to force a game seven. I just want to be able to say that the team took Detroit the distance in the worst circumstances imaginable.

I'm really excited, too
And feeling pretty good about the game.  It's going to be a really long afternoon to get through, though, waiting for tip-off!
Who says it can't be done?

I'm sitting in english class
"working on my essay" and consumed by the possibility of my team making history. Decked out in a Hinrich jersey, too.

Will 5 o'clock (Cali time) never come?

If there are problems in this world that jumping can solve, Tyrus Thomas will solve them. (Truehoop)

Lucky I am in History

Sigh.
You young whippersnappers.

Oh, to be 19 again. No office to go to, no work to attend to, just class, beer, women, and time.

I have noticed that this blog attracts many young fans, at least in comparison to some of the other blogs and boards I frequent.

I love
how well we're taking advantage of our education.
Now I'm in physics, still reading about basketball.

Learning about Uranium 235, or Scott Skiles' tactical adjustments?

Study or Pregame Analysis?
I'm trying to study for the next section of the CPA exam this weekend.  Just trying to squeeze in some more studying before I go home for the night.

If you can't get pumped up about a game like this, you're not a fan.  Hell, even my dog will be breaking out the Tyrus youth jersey tonight.  Thank you sales office for sending random packages of giveaways to ticker holders!

I love you Ben, you almost make me forget about...tacos.

Go Bulls!!!!!!!!
No team can stop Tyrus Thomas. They can only get out of the way, or duck 3 inches and let him fly over.

Needless to say at this point,
but I believe that switching Hinrich on Billups is the single most important adjustment Skiles has made.

No Nocioni
He's clearly hiding a pretty serious injury. Wonder if it will hurt his trade stock for this summer's trade? Yes, there will be a trade. Right now he can't run, can't jump, and can't shoot. What good is he? Griffin is the better choice, should Thomas be in foul trouble.

Detroit, tonight is your last hurrah
Lost tonight and you get swallowed by the Bulls' momentum in game 7.

Your dynasty of arrogance, playing down to the competition, Sheed's crooked yellow teeth during his post-whistle PMS attacks, that 3-inch gap between them they don't show at need4sheed.com, and a lucker title against a high-school drama plagued LA Fakers team is over.

Billups is bolting this offseason because no respectable player wants to stay in DUMP-troit and be underpaid by a stingy GM. How about them confrence finals with Flip Murray as starting PG? yea.. good luck with that. Sheed get some braces man your maw is ugleir than a great white shark... on a second thought, nah. Remain an ugly bum it compliments your city's image better.

Vlad, a positive comment!
Start storing up for the apocalypse.

I would love to agree to agree with you, and I think we will win the series. But! The NBA, in all its inane glory, has decided that Game 7 (if needed) will take place on MONDAY. I feel like much of the momentum will have dissapated.

I'm bitter about that.

why the game cna't be played on Sat. or Sun. Monday is just too far away.

Personally
I'm glad it's Monday as I had major conflicts on both Saturday and Sunday.  Plus, the hype will be really fun.

But now I shall stop talking of game 7 lest I end up needing to flog myself for extra time...
