PLAYOFF Game Thread: Bulls vs. Pistons Game 4

The longer the Bulls are in the playoffs, the more we can learn about the roster, so there's that benefit to winning a few games even if they have a near-impossible shot in the series.

I think we've found out that they can't match up with the Pistons yet, but a win would at least show glimpses of being somewhat comperable. And at the very least it will give Detroit fans reason to worry about their 'close-out' ability in series, or something.

I'll be at the game today, so if it's another loss it'll be a very depressing United Center and that's no good. If the Pistons jump out to an early lead it might get extra depressing as Skiles will likely empty the bench for some garbage time, and that doesn't help us learn anything.

So it's come to this: rooting for more learning experiences!

Whatever happens today
this team is better than last years team. Next years team will be better than this years. I love this team and will support them no matter what happens.

GO BULLS!!!

Disappointed? Of course but I'm still proud of my team.

Yeah, we definitely need him to get going
Big bummer that open 3 didn't drop for him.

At least we seem to be getting aggressive Kirk and Lu today; I'm sure BG will heat up.

I was glad to see they didn't get panicy when the Pistons took the lead.

the wrecking crew comes in late(joejoe, hongy, vlad, zujic, etc) then the Detriot'ers come in with them(Boney, Boney cronies), so there's really only the people that have been here for a while, with you and Bullish now chiming in. I like it more like this to tell you the truth.

he can't help that he threw it down on the golden
boy.  Golden Boy went for the flop, so he got flushed.

Other than that, Billups, Hamilton and Sheed got the Chicago disease... they couldn't hit a shot to save their lives.

Props to the Bulls on today's game.  I was rather impressed by the way they came out and hung tight after Detroit made a little run in the 4th.

by Chalkwhite on May 13, 2007 5:31 PM CDT up reply actions

nah, not really
I'm sure some of my "co-horts" (as you guys call them) will come on here and talk about how lucky the Bulls got.

They played good today...  Sheed, Billups and Hamilton obviously couldn't hit a shot, and Webber had no points in the 2nd straight game (I didn't realize he was as important as he is, the last 2 games have been close).

Anywho, doesn't matter to me really.  Game 5 is Tuesday, so at least I can watch Detroit then instead of waiting for CLE or NJN to win the series.

Danny Crawford does not like the Pistons, as evidenced in Game 4.

by Boney @ Blog a Bull on May 13, 2007 5:45 PM CDT up reply actions

"they played well today"
but in your sig, you say that Crawford doesn't like you. Just because he had the balls to call all of the pussy shit Detroit usually gets away with?

Or, you're just talking out of your ass. Which is the most likely scenario.

It wasn't the TO I was griping about, per se,
more the complete lack of production in all areas.  No assists, no rebounds, one TO - without that basket, Du was a black hole statistically (although he did end up credited later with a block I managed to miss).  I also hadn't really noticed him till that point, so I have no idea how well his "intangibles" were making up for that.

You right! His best ...
Two good combo guards (Kirk & Ben) and one 2nd string point(duhon) < ( any one of starting point guards: tony parker, steve nash, chancey billips, deron williams, baron davis, etc) in crunch time when the game is on the line.  This series might be over in 4 or 5 games, but Paxson still has to address this situation evenually. Paxson had the benefit of playing with a all-star point-forward.  If Kirk is the future, then he needs a point-forward or a point-SG to compliment his style of play.

It's fun and sweet for Pistons fans to contemplate just how o-so great they're beloved Pistons are right now, but lets not steer from the big picture here: the team is on the decline. And this isn't a mere observation. Besides the "I just have a feeling" consensus that you usually put up here, there are clear stats that show this true. Just for the sake of trying to keep this somewhat abridged, I'll only show stats from this year and last, which is kind of a disservice to the Pistons starters right now, because they put up great numbers in the yesteryears.

Stats!

R. Wallace '05-'06 FT  FTA  ORB  DRB  TRB  AST STL
                            1.7 2.3  1.1  5.7  6.8  2.3 1.0

BLK  TO  PF  PTS    PER
1.6  1.1 2.9 15.1   17.6

R. Wallace '06-'07 FT  FTA  ORB  DRB  TRB  AST STL
                            1.4 1.8  1.2  6.0  7.2  1.7 1.0

BLK  TO  PF  PTS   PER
1.6  1.3 3.0 12.3  15.7

C. Billups '05-'06 FT  FTA  ORB  DRB  TRB  AST STL
                            5.7 6.4  0.5  2.6  3.1  8.6 0.1

BLK  TO  PF  PTS    PER
0.1  2.1 2.0 18.5   23.4

C. Billups '06-'07 FT  FTA  ORB  DRB  TRB  AST STL
                            5.5 6.2  0.3  3.1  3.4  7.2 1.2

BLK  TO  PF  PTS    PER
0.2  2.0 2.3 17.0   21.3

R. Hamilton '05-'06 FT FTA  ORB  DRB  TRB  AST STL
                             3.2  3.8  1.1  2.2  3.2  3.4  0.7

BLK  TO  PF  PTS    PER
0.2  2.2 2.6 19.8   18.2

R. Hamilton '06-'07 FT FTA  ORB  DRB  TRB  AST STL
                             4.6  5.4  1.0  2.8  3.8  0.8

BLK  TO  PF  PTS    PER
0.2  2.1 3.1 19.8   18.1

Tayshaun Prince actually improved this year. But, well, he improved to a whopping 15.9 PER, which Deng almost equated in his second year. And Jason Maxiell? Really? Tyrus Thomas only needed one year, with only a year at LSU mind you, at age 20 to be up-to-par with what Maxiell has done in two years in the NBA at age 23.

Now, for some self-calculated stats, and I won't even use MatLab to see more trends. Hooray for no more school!

Projected '07-'08 Numbers

R. Wallace MP    PTS   FG%
                31.4  11.5  41

C. Billups MP    PTS   FG%
                37.54 16.8  41

R. Hamilton MP   PTS  FG%
                37.83 19.9  46

Disclaimers: I took stats from Wallace from 2000-2001 while I only took stats from both Hamilton and Billups when they started playing for the Pistons. I figured out the percent increase/decrease from every subsequent year, and come up with these numbers. It's not that far of a reach either, especially for Wallace: the last time he had averaged points as low as 12.3 was in 1998-1999, and goes double for his MP, not averagine something that low since '98-'99. Topping that, the three of these guys are either already in their 30s, or are pivoting towards it(Hamilton's 29 next season).

While you guys are rocking this year, and probably will for a good two more years, it's inevitable that the Pistons team is going to be surpassed. The Bulls, on the other hand, have invested their future on Hinrich, Gordon, Deng, Thomas and Sefolosha, all of whom are under 27( Oh, and lest not remind us of the draft pick in 9 days). Every team goes through highs and lows in their history, and the Bulls are in the process of going through the highs. The Pistons, in this golden-age they've been in, has only 1 Championship to show for. Nice.

So, this is why Detroit sucks, and why you suck.

We'll, at least we salvaged some pride.
Very odd atmosphere at the UC today.

It was a mixture of resignation and defiance. In some ways, it was like watching a condemned man eat his final feast just before midnight. We got loud during the fourth quarter as a show of civic solidarity. The team also got a rousing ovation as they left the court. I think many fans know that this may be the last time we can express our appreciation for their efforts this season.

There were a ton of Pistons' fans in the place, not surprisingly. At least we sent them home unsatisfied.

Still depressed at the course of the series, but a win is good.

all sarcasm aside 1958...
1958ChiTown,

I know it's hard to take this seriously but as the main Piston follower on this board, Detroit was clearly outplayed today on both ends.

Ben Wallace showed up and dominated the boards, Detroit did not hustle they thought it would come to them, and Chicago took this series back.

Yeah, they're still down 3-1 and noone has ever come back from 3-0, but at least today was a solid note they can carry into Game 5.  Do I want to see the Bulls win Game 5?  No, because I think if they win Game 5, then the series goes to 7 and that means the Bulls are on a run.

Like I said earlier, games 2 and 5 are pivotal.  If they can beat them once, just once, in Detroit, Big Mo's all Bulls'!

by California Al on May 13, 2007 6:51 PM CDT reply actions

Thomas was the difference today
The Bulls tried their hardest to blow yet another lead, and they probably would have if it wasn't for Thomas.  How shocking that putting your best leaper out there makes you a better rebounding team.  Now if only they can get him to stop shooting jumpers . . .

Deng and Wallace were awesome today, and they've easily been the best two Bulls in this series.  I realize that's not saying much, since nobody's really played well, but I think it's fair to say that they've played less poorly than everyone else has in this series so far.  Wallace is going to get most of the blame from the media once this series is over simply because of his big contract (OK, showing up late on Thursday and acting like a dickhead about it afterwards didn't help matters), but he hasn't been the problem for the Bulls.  The problem has been that Billups and Hamilton have absolutely annihilated Hinrich and Gordon, but thankfully Hinrich decided to show up today.

by Big D on May 13, 2007 6:56 PM CDT reply actions

coaching adjustments
Skiles finally found some things that worked. It'll be interesting to see what adjustments Saunders makes, because the Bulls offense finally played decent against the Det zone, and the Bull's D did a much better job on Rip, who for once wasn't able to just run around screens and shot whenever he felt like it.
