Game Thread #77: Bulls at Toronto Raptors

The perfect distraction from talking to your family today.  Unless your family likes the Bulls (mine does! Or maybe they just do enough as to not talk to me, hmm...)

This is also the thread for Cleveland/Detroit. A win by the Bulls and a loss by the Cavs would really put  the Cavs in a corner.

Wallace, Tyrus, and even Noc may be back. Bargnani may return for the Raptors.

I thought Noch was back? You mean he might play?
Bargnani had an emergency appendectomy? Hmmmm I don't know about that when I had mine I couldn't stretch my arm to far above my head without some tearing. Im sure he had a the laser incision which may be different. I went old school knife. Bad idea I still have a nice scar. But the doc angled it so it looked more like I was in a knife fight rather than surgery.

Don't they go in through
the belly button area now and leave a very faint scar below it?

it ain't lasers
it's laparoscopic surgery.  and they usually can do it unless the appendix is way inflamed or in a bad position.  they put in some ports through the belly button or just below it and some on the right side that are pretty small.  either way, the recovery is quicker this way and i'm sure a pro athlete recovers more quickly than the average guy.

Come on Bulls. This is a huge game.
We need to take a one game lead on the Cavs.

And I am sick of hearing about how the Raptors are the "most dangerous young team in the East."

by 1958ChiTown on Apr 8, 2007 5:07 PM CDT reply actions

I noticed it depends on who you listen to
Some of the heads say that about Toronto, and some about the Bulls.  The funny thing was, they're all giving the same speech - young team, started the year out slow, great record since the All-Star break, playing their best ball now, great home records, building the "right" way - it's incredible how much the two teams have in common.

Flagrant Foul on Hinrich by peterson
He clothes lined Hinrich when he was going up for a lay-up

by SRQman on Apr 8, 2007 5:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Do you agree.....
with the ejection? A rough foul and he's gone? Seems like a lot though I didn't see it....

by stanchar @ Blog a Bull on Apr 8, 2007 5:55 PM CDT up reply actions

I didn't agree with the ejection
If a Bulls player had been ejected for that, people would be going nuts on here.  Maybe it deserved a flagrant, but it really wasn't THAT bad.  Peterson was going for the ball, and only got his head because he was coming from the opposite direction from Hinrich.  I'll gladly take the free points, but the ejection was really excessive.

by Big D on Apr 8, 2007 6:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Ejection
Isn't the ejection an automatic with the flagrant called?

You can't clothesline someone, but I agree that Peterson didn't really mean to do anything bad. Just happened that way.

by nas on Apr 8, 2007 6:32 PM CDT up reply actions

That's the flagrant 1 - flagrant 2 distinction
They could have called a 1, giving Bulls 2 shots and the ball back, without an ejection.

by wjb1492 on Apr 8, 2007 6:35 PM CDT up reply actions

I also just saw MP got a
flagrant (Type 2) which means immediate ejection...what did he do?

by stanchar @ Blog a Bull on Apr 8, 2007 5:54 PM CDT reply actions

Pete went to block Kirk on a break away and
completely missed the ball, smashing him in the head. He was ejected and called for a flagrant 2.

The Calderon got a technical for commenting on the intial call.

by milesgmsu on Apr 8, 2007 5:58 PM CDT reply actions

It's weird
Seems like Toronto hit some shot nearly every time the Bulls did something nice, but Raps aren't shooting well (.365) and aren't taking more shots than the Bulls.  I suppose that's largely due to that early 10-0 run the Raps pulled off and the Bulls having to battle back into it.

Good news, obviously, if you take the early part of the 2nd into consideration, Bulls seriously outplayed them in the last part of the 2nd to take the lead.  Hope they can keep it up.

by wjb1492 on Apr 8, 2007 6:17 PM CDT reply actions

BG has made
some nice shots in the 2nd quarter. Hope their shooting improves as a team in the 2nd half. Scared me when Kirk and TT hit knees but looks like both are OK.

Just casually trotting back and forth, tossing up jumpers.

The interior players aren't really fighting for position either, so the chances of an offensive rebound are pretty low.

by milesgmsu on Apr 8, 2007 7:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Nothing was on the line in those games.
This is a dogsh*t Toronto team that we match up well with, not the defending world champion with Shaq. We had a chance to essentially lock up the two seed.

Easily the worst dumb sh*t performance of the year. Terrible, terrible, terrible defense this half.

by 1958ChiTown on Apr 8, 2007 7:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Toronto is not a "dogshit" team
After this game, they'll only be a game and a half behind us for the #2 seed.  If they're "dogshit," then what are we?

by Big D on Apr 8, 2007 7:18 PM CDT up reply actions

They are an emminently and utterly
beatable squad.

They sure as sh*t aren't fifteen points better than the Bulls.

We have beaten them something like 9 times out of the last 10.

They don't pose significant match-up issues.

We are a better team.

This is just an inexcusable fuckwad performance in a huge game.

by 1958ChiTown on Apr 8, 2007 7:21 PM CDT up reply actions

with the ORL
game we came off of one of the most dominant preformances in a reg season game in my memory

the miami game was an abortion all around; not to mention that we were streaking.

Furthermore, those games hold just as much importance as these games...its jsut more noticable when the playoffs are a scant two weeks away

by milesgmsu on Apr 8, 2007 7:24 PM CDT up reply actions

The Orlando game was the second game of the
season.

It's understandable to have that sort of collapse so early in the season when you are incorporating new players.

It is a lot less understandable to sleepwalk through one of the most important halves of basketball in the season when you have played together for 77 games.

Well, we had our blowout fun last week
This sucked, but it's a good reminder that the guys need to show up for every game.  Kirk had a rough game after several good ones, and they were also adding guys back into the rotation.

Time to move on.

by wjb1492 on Apr 8, 2007 7:32 PM CDT reply actions

You know why we lost this game?
Not because Toronto played some great game.

Rather, because in the third quarter, when we had a double digit lead, we (a) turned the ball over; and (b) committed assinine fouls that put Toronto on the line.

We may have just blown the two seed through our own sheer indolence.

Not to mention, should we hang onto the two seed, we have a decent chance of facing these Raptors in the second round.

Nice job, guys.

by 1958ChiTown on Apr 8, 2007 7:34 PM CDT reply actions

This loss hurt for me, basically,
because we were simply obliterated by them from the 3rd quarter onward.

I look at it like this, though... to secure the 2nd seed, we have to beat:

  • Knicks
  • Bobcats
  • Wiz
  • Nets
Hopefully we'll be able to pull it together after this loss, and go into the 1st round with a 4-game win streak

Very exhausting game to watch
I thought this Raptor team was good even last year when they were a lottery team. They always showed flashes of brilliance and this was one of them.

I think the bulls will be fine, Washington is pretty much a sure thing and the Bulls can beat the other three easily.

Miami loses!
We've gotten lucky today.

by Big D on Apr 8, 2007 8:04 PM CDT reply actions

What's Colder than Cold?
Ice Cold!  Shake it like a Polaroid picture.

Jeez.  That third quarter was not very Appalachian State.  I started screaming, "Someone make a shot!"  Bulls went 5/18, even though a lot of them were good looks.  The low-point, if you could pick one, was when Duhon bricked two free throws.  The whole team went ice cold and couldn't hit, and the defense did not pick up the slack on the other end.  Toronto played like they had more riding on this game.  I'm not sure they did, but that's sure how it looked.

But hey, Bobcats win, Cavs lose.  So it's not such a bad day.  We just need Philly to come back in the second half now.  The big question is, are we sure we want to face Toronto in the playoffs instead of Miami?

If the Bulls can win the last four, they get 50 wins, and 31-10 at home.  I think that will happen.  This team has generally played extremely well after bad losses, and we get the Knicks in town on Tuesday (after they host the Pistons tomorrow).  That sets up for a strong finish.  Win  the rest and #2 is ours.  I don't think Cleveland's gonna lose either, so the team has to shake this one off and win the rest.

I am not really sure that Miami losing was good
for the Bulls.

It's only good if we hold onto the two seed.

If we fall to fifth, Miami's loss is terrible for us.
