Game Thread #75: Bulls at Detroit Pistons

[Ben Wallace is out tonight after what I will facetiously guess is a massive hangover. Ya know, I get the same sinus things after a morning session of hurling the previous night's poison out of me. Although I've never been taken to the hospital for it, I've also never gone drinking with the Pistons. On to the preview.]

Mad Respek to James (aka Kidd), but I think he's way off on the significance of tonight's game.

The Pistons have the #1 seed pretty much locked up, they can tolerate a loss tonight. Rasheed Wallace may not play due to hyperextending his finger the night before in Indiana.

The thing that gets me most about the Pistons' attitude is their sense of entitlement, like they're the next great dynasty in the NBA and have won multiple championships. It's annoying, but they have been to the conference finals for 4 straight seasons, which is pretty good.

But should they respect the Bulls more? Maybe, but they certainly don't have to. The Bulls have had a real good season, but the Pistons had a better one. The Bulls are a good team, but the Pistons are better. Are they so much better that the Bulls should be dismissed in a 7-game series? I don't think so, but there's no sense in us whining about the Bulls having entitled respect before the playoffs even begin.

There is no real rivalry yet between these teams. The Bulls are likely seen as an annoyance more than a threat. The Pistons more likely have nightmares over their collapse against Miami last season, or nearly losing a playoff war against LeBron and the Jamesons. I think the Bulls can give them a similar war, and win it...but the first shot isn't tonight, it's next month.

But what I've been referring to is the significance of this game to the Pistons. For the Bulls it's still significant because every game is important to overtake the #2 seed from the Cavs. The Shaq-sized elephant in the room has me nervous of the Bulls facing Miami, and with the Heat now in the drivers seat to take the Southeast Division, the better chance to avoid that 4-5 matchup is to get the #2 seed. (better yet, hope they pass Toronto and get the #3 seed so it doesn't really matter)

So Bulls need to just win, regardless of the opponent. If they do tonight, the Pistons will say they didn't care anyway. Whether that's true doesn't matter, the (re)start of any rivalry can begin in the Playoffs.

WHAT THE FACK!
Ben Wallace is out?

Out?

For a game against Detroit?

I have never even heard of a suddenly inflamed sinus.

This is a big game. I want to win the season series for the first time since the Jordan era.

Okay...
I know you guys have been over it, and I've been visiting this site at least 5 times a week since the season started... But PLEASE someone explain this seeding to me. I always thought it was the division winners get 1-3, the rest in descending record order, along with the highest seed in each round getting the home-court.

Obviously the first part isn't true with the Cavs at No. 2. I've also heard the home-court thing isn't true. Can someone explain this, at least once. I promise I'll never ask again.

by tyger1147 on Apr 4, 2007 6:02 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

rules change this season
now they seed #1-4 among the 3 division winners and the team with the next best record (in this case cleveland).

Then 5-8 is by record. Best record still gets home court.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Apr 4, 2007 6:05 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

A division winner is guaranteed a top 4 seed.
The other top four seed goes to the non-division winner with the best record. If the record of that non-division winner is better than one or two of the division winners, then the non-division winner gets the highest seed. If the season ended today, Detroit, Toronto, and Miami would be the division winners. However, the Cavs have a better record than Miami and Toronto, so they would be the two seed. Basically, the three division winners and the best non-division winner get the top four spots, while the precise order of those spots is determined by record.

As for home court advantage, the team with the better record gets home court advantage, not the higher seed. In the first round, the lower seed could only have the home court advantage in the four-five match-up, because of how the playoffs are structured now.

They say it well
on the ESPN page:
The three division winners and the second-place team with the best record compete for the top four seeds in a conference, based on win-loss record and tiebreakers

The thing that gets me most about the Pistons...
Is that they're a bunch of fucking bitches who spend the entire game whining and crying about the referees.  It would be one thing if was was just Rasheed Wallace, but no, it's EVERYONE on the entire team.  They spend the entire game bitching to the refs, and then they act shocked when they get technicals.  At some point, it's going to cost them a key game in the playoffs.  Hopefully it's this year against the Bulls.

I sure hope he is, because there's no other rational explanation why Sweetney is out there instead of him.

by Big D on Apr 4, 2007 7:04 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Um, is Tyrus in foul trouble?
I just started watching the game, but I am wondering why he isn't on Webber. It would be a perfect match-up for Ty.

by 1958ChiTown on Apr 4, 2007 7:04 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Thomas is in now
If he's was active, why put Sweetney in there at all?  When Chris Webber is blowing by you and dunking on you, you shouldn't be out there.

by Big D on Apr 4, 2007 7:10 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Suck it up Tyrus.
You have to learn to play sick in this league.

Why, why, why
does Michael Sweetney ever get any playing time? He will be the DEATH of me.

He absolutely looked like crap
Give him credit, though, he was awesome when he was on the court.  They may have to limit him to several short 3-4 stretches before getting some rest tonight.

by Big D on Apr 4, 2007 7:20 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nothing but props.
He scored five points and got a few rebounds in a three minute span.

The playoff seeding has become critical, which
makes this game big.

Previously, Toronto was in the four spot, which was a great match-up for the Bulls. Now Miami is there.

Miami in the first round is tough, especially if Wade gets back.

Without
Ben and TT (who needs a formalized nickname, btw), we really lack energy, esp on defense. Fortunately, the guards are knocking down shots.

Still, I want my energy players. And I never want to see Michael Sweetney again in my life.

by Chalkwhite on Apr 4, 2007 7:22 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Sweetney's got to be pushing 300 lbs at this point
I don't care how many people we have out, there's no way he should be out there in a game that means anything.  At least, not in an NBA game that means anything; I wouldn't be surprised if Sweetney becomes an NBADL All-Star in a year or two.

by Big D on Apr 4, 2007 7:31 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He's listed at
270 lbs. I can't imagine that that's within 20 lbs. of his actual weight.

Wow
If he's going to be out for a while, then whoever plays Washington in the 1st round might as well get  a bye.  It would be a shame though; I was really hoping Washington would win that division so we could avoid Miami in the 1st round.

It's unbelievable that they're only down by 1
Wallace is out, Thomas has only played a few minutes, Gordon has been terrible . . . they really should be down by 20 at this point.  This would be a hell of a win.

by Big D on Apr 4, 2007 7:39 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Thabo has some potential.
I just don't see how he is going to develop, though, behind Gordon, Hinrich, and Duhon.

by 1958ChiTown on Apr 4, 2007 7:42 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I think he'll have to go (or one of the other
guards will) if Thabo is going to develop.

We used a Top 15 pick on him. Paxson must have some plans to actually use him down the road.

I don't know. It just seems like a waste to have him sitting on the bench, languishing. He won't get better that way.

by 1958ChiTown on Apr 4, 2007 7:49 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Interesting game
so far. T-Time played well considering he looks like death warmed over. I just love what he brings to the game. Thabo has done ok too. Good thing Kirk is playing well. What's up with Gordon? He's been inconsistant lately.
Note to Ben Gordon: Please stop committing stupid offensive fouls.

by sue369 on Apr 4, 2007 7:46 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

nice run to end the half
I was worried when they started so hot from the field and didn't build a big lead, since the bench predictably came and sucked.

Second straight time against Detroit that Gordon was in foul trouble. Maybe they know to attack him with either Billups or Hamilton. Or it's just Ben being dumb?

Can't they give Tyrus a magical B12 shot?

BS Refs
Thomas and Hamilton got into it a little (not fighting but close) and they both got ejected which is bullcrap because Hamilton was following Thomas around making the talk go on longer. Thomas shouldn't have been ejected imo he was trying to end it by walking away.

Hamilton

But you've got to like Deng's leadership, trying to settle Thomas down. Good sign for the future.

We've got this game wrapped up, we don't need the Pistons baiting him into punching somebody and getting a long suspension right before the playoffs.  The call was terrible, but at least Tyrus was able to keep his cool.

Hamilton should get suspended.
He elbowed Tyrus not once, but TWICE. The second was after the whistle.

And then he stalked Tyrus.

by 1958ChiTown on Apr 4, 2007 8:42 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

'stalked'
that's what I saw too. Tyrus was walking away and Rip wouldn't shut up. Tyrus may have been still jawing too but it sure seemed like Rip was the aggressor.

The T's hurt Rip more anyway since he has like 15 this year.

And nice job by Detroit fans by throwing something at Tyrus in the Tunnel. That's why they live in Detroit.

It's good to know
we can win without Gordon contributing.

We can't, of course, win if he's missing all his shots, but I think Hinrich is probably a better barometer of the team than Gordon.

I also got the distinct feeling that the Pistons didn't give a shit about this game.

I usually don't buy the "statement game"
stuff, at least not for regular season games, but if anything is a statement game, this one is.  To go into Detroit without Ben Wallace, with Ben Gordon hardly even on the court, and beat the crap out of the Pistons is just unbelievable.  Maybe it's true that Pistons don't care, but still, this is a huge win.

Excitement...
Good to see all the excitement on here from a regular season game.

I don't know what a "typical Detroit intimidation" attempt is, but we'll have to take your word on it 1958ChiTown.  And I'm sure there aren't parts of ChiTown that aren't shithole parts either...  That comment was totally unnecessary.

It's a basketball game dude, relax...  it's a REGULAR season basketball game.  Your boys still will have a worse record than the Pistons after tonight's game.  You may win the season series and even though #1 seed is still within grasp, I don't think the Pistons will give up the #1 seed in the east.

Yeah, dude. Detroit is a cosmopolitan metropolis.
It's just like Chicago.

In fact, like Chicago, Detroit is the running for the Olympics. The White Trash Olympics.

It features events like "Airbrushing the Camaro" and "Wifebeater Accessorization" and "White Flight 200 Meters"

The Bulls just humiliated the Pistons in their building. You were one Weber push off from being swept.

And Hamilton is a pussy.

by 1958ChiTown on Apr 4, 2007 9:14 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's sad
that the Detroit fans couldn't wait to blow off steam until the end of the game, and instead they had to throw something at Tyrus.  If they had only waited, they could have stolen rims off of parked cars and started out-of-control trash fires as usual.

Not bitching at you
Just saying that everyone on here was pretty much excited about the game except for the idiot making references to the basketball team being a "walking stanky labia"... it's a regular season game, I can understand the playoffs or something.

On another note, I know your boys are short handed and such... but do you think 42 minutes from Hinrich is a little bit of overkill considering that your boys were up 20+ points in the 4th quarter?  You don't think resting PJ Brown, Luol Deng and Hinrich is key to the ultimate success of this team? 38,39, and 42 minutes respectively.

I'm sorry if that last line of questioning didn't contain more curse words and remarks about how "shitty" I think Chicago....

by Boney on Apr 4, 2007 9:08 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Just saying
that I'm sure Detroit's message boards aren't completely kosher.

But I am not of the opinion that the city itself in either a hell pit or a walking genital.

And I don't mind Hinrich's minutes. He was the only one of our best three (Gordon and Deng) who was having any kind of a night.

skiles does have a problem
playing guys too long.  But it was only a blowout for about 10 minutes.  You'd figure a team with as much machismo and false bravado as the Pistons would make a run, not try to get themselves thrown out of the game...

by bullshooter on Apr 5, 2007 10:17 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, don't you think that it's a little overkill
for Hamilton to insinuate a quarrel with a 20 year-old rook when a) The game has ended and B) In summary of your own words, "just a regular season game"?

But the fact that you're on a Chicago Bulls blog instead of your own respective team makes me wonder how comfortable you are with the Pistons.

I've said it all along by the way...
If there's any team that Detroit should fear in the playoffs from here on out is Chicago.  Chicago is a great basketball team when their shooting is on, when it's not though, it's a disaster.  Chicago has (I believe) the best mix of youth and talent in the league.  Instead of me saying they should have the best mix of youth in the league because of all the high draft picks they've had recently, I'll just say I'm impressed that Coach Skiles has been able to keep the youth of this team under control..

I'm glad Detroit picked up Sheed in '04, they never would have won the title.  However I don't like how they picked up Webber this year, even though he's helped them, just because it seems like they're trying to be like the late 90's Lakers by picking up names and getting older.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Bulls went on a run during the playoffs, it always seems like 1 team from the east does and they usually are the team that makes the finals.

Don't shit on Detroit though, they're 2 wins from their 6th consecutive 50+ win season.  They've had a great run, and if Billups doesn't leave this off-season I see them having another 50 win season next year (so long as the nucleus stays... ok maybe get rid of Hamilton).

RE: Isiah Thomas commends my sportsmanship
I didn't say it was overkill to leave Hinrich, Brown or Deng in... I could care less...

I was simply saying from a common sense or a "rest" standpoint.  You're up by 20, why continue to run Hinrich out there for 40+ minutes?  I don't care that they did, I'm trying to interject some real basketball questions in here rather than coming up with reasons why Hamilton "stalked" Tyrus Thomas.

Richard Hamilton is the weakest player on the Pistons team.  He may be their leading scorer, but he's the easiest of the starting 5 to replace.  He gets hit in the face on a screen or something and he feels it was a cheapshot so the on the insuing(ensuing?) possessions he feels the need to get up in the guy's face and start shit...  everyone knows it, he sucks and I wish DET would get rid of him.

I'm not here ridiculing the Bulls, just simply adding to the quality of the board, that's all.

I'm not on a Pistons' site commenting about them because I can't stand blind homers...

I will keep telling myself it's a regular season game.  I've given props to the Bulls all season (including tonight) yet some of you donkeys seem to think I'm attacking you.

I'm not from Detroit, I wasn't taking shots at the town of Chicago... all I asked was why someone would get so pumped up over a regular season game as to make fun of Detroit even though we all know the Pistons don't actually play in Detroit, but in a suburb of Detroit.  that's all...

Despise the Pistons...
I like them, but I don't like them when they feel like the league owes them something.  This whole "you know, we play our best basketball with our backs against the wall" bullshit in the playoffs caught up to them last year against Miami.  It's bullshit, but I've been a fan since '86 so I can't go back on them now...

Besides, what fun would it be making fun of the bulls on a pistons' site? (I'm kidding 1958ChiTown, don't refer to me as women's genitalia)

To no one in particular...
I don't what it was about Thabo (the age, the commitment to defense or what) but I remember when Tyrus was on an ESPN chat two days before the draft, asking him what he would think if the Bulls drafted him and Thabo Sefolosha. He said (obviously), "I would love to be drafted by Chicago. Anyone who could come in and help would also be great." Or something like that. (I'm trying to impress my knowledge of how I knew who Thabo was before he was drafted. Being as I know nothing about basketball.)

by tyger1147 on Apr 4, 2007 9:29 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

The Pistons don't play in the anus of the Midwest itself, they just hang out on the perineum, like human dingleberries.

you need to either watch the game or record it. If you watch Sports Center highlights it was Kirk Hinrich hits from here, and from here, from here too and from here. He had an awesome game and to see Deng start hitting in the second quarter was great too. Thabo and T-Time both played well and the little tiff between Hamilton and TT is a must. TT got screwed by the ref big time.

I was just looking at ESPN's daily leaders thing
Kirk, Lu and PJ were the top 3 players in the game, and all well above season average.  Ty more than doubled his season average even in just the short minutes.  BG, Andre Barrett and Sweets were the only Bulls below average - although I'm not sure how you go with an average for AB and Sweets when they so rarely play.

Rasheed Wallace was the top guy for Detroit, but still a little below his season average.  Flip Murray, Carlos Delfino and Lindsey Hunter were the only Detroit guys who played better than their average, and even that wasn't by much.
