PLAYOFF Game Thread: Bulls vs. Heat Game 4

I may have too much confidence in a Bulls sweep today. But I figure...the Heat are washed up, old, and probably don't even want to make an extra trip to Chicago. I did enjoy hearing in some places that this team has too much 'pride' to go down easily. What pride? They coasted the whole regular season and seem perfectly content with their rings.

Hopefully half of the players take off their shoes and leave them at midcourt to signify retirement at the end of this one.

If the Bulls do sweep . .
When would the Detroit series start?

I heard on TNT yesterday
that regardless of what the Bulls do the series doesn't start until next weekend. I have no idea if that's accurate info though.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Apr 29, 2007 11:45 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Sunday
because of the stupid tv schedule, the series won't start until Sunday (I believe)

by Boney on Apr 29, 2007 11:47 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If the series starts on Sunday, do you
know what the schedule would be?

Sunday Tuesday Friday Sunday?

Or Sunday Wednesday Saturday Monday?

Or something else?

Maybe it is just impossible to know.

If the Bulls sweep today, will the league announce the schedule? Or will they wait until all first round series are complete to even announce the schedule?

by 1958ChiTown on Apr 29, 2007 11:53 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That is so lame
A week off for both teams?

Is that so ESPN can hype up the Wallace to Detroit story over and over again until it's the whole world's mind?

I think (think) that the NBA
attempts to coordinate all of the series so that no particular branch of any bracket (east or west) is substantially ahead of or behind the others.

They want all second round series to start at the same point and the conference finals to start at the same time.

by 1958ChiTown on Apr 29, 2007 11:57 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I would put money on...
Sunday, Tuesday, Friday, Sunday... only because it's the marquee matchup in the East.

the Bulls blocking five straight shots by Shaq at close range to defensively preserve the win at the last second.  Deja vu.

I saw the highlight from the 98 Finals where Jordan made the shot to win the series... clearly Bavetta allowed Jordan to push off on Bryon Russell, clearly a no-call

Skiles altered his use of TT.
Usually, TT comes in at the end of the first. This time, Malik came in.

Could be because of Ben's foul trouble.

Could be because Skiles lost faith in TT as a result of his last performance.

by Boney on Apr 29, 2007 12:40 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Drawing charges is a part of playing defense.
If you establish position and get to a spot first, you have a right to stand your ground.

It's a big part of playing defense.

It's not like these guys are flopping on light contact. They are getting hammered.

by 1958ChiTown on Apr 29, 2007 12:41 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I understand
I don't want to piss Matt or all the other Noc lovers off... but it seems like all of the foreign players tend to "flop" more than others.  I realize it's a big part of playing defense, but I have never seen so many guys hit the floor.  I would say on the Bulls, Noc and Duhon are the biggest offenders.

by Boney on Apr 29, 2007 12:43 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If the shots start dropping closer to average, Miami is toast.  I really think this is the best they can play against the Bulls at this point, and they can't pull away.

or just the ones where the guy is in his face and he's trying to draw a foul?  I don't like when Billups goes up for a shot and kicks his legs and waves his arms around like he just got hit by a bus...

you know what else I don't like though?  how Hinrich wasn't thrown out of the game when he threw his mouthpiece in the crowd the other night...  to be fair, Udonis was ejected for throwing his mouthpiece on the ground last year..

I don't think they should have made the all-star team either.  I don't think Rip brings anything more to the table than Ben Gordon does offensively...  an argument could be made for Billups tho, since he's top 3 point guard probably in the game right now.

by Boney on Apr 29, 2007 8:25 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Gotta Clarify Something
Haslem threw his mouthpiece AT THE REF last year.  It was one of the the top three dumbest moves I've ever seen in a sports game.

That said, Hinrich probably should have been ejected, but it wasn't in the same league as Haslem.

by Craig Hodges Explosion 3000 on Apr 29, 2007 3:25 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

key difference: identity of the ref
Haslem's mouthpiece throw was in the neighborhood of Joe Crawford, the ref w/ the shortest fuse in the NBA.  He throws routinely people out for much less.

I'm scurred
that Skiles has put Malik ahead of Tyrus in the rotation.

Maybe he feels there's no need to take on the 'risk' of playing Tyrus, just stay close and they'll run away in the 2nd half.

But they'll need Tyrus against the Pistons.

by 1958ChiTown on Apr 29, 2007 1:10 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Tyrus' play...
Let me first say, I think Tyrus Thomas is a beast.  With that being said, if we're talking about "barely winning", then 1 of the games you're referencing CHI BARELY beat DET (83-81), in a game which Richard Hamilton didn't even play, and I know this is a shocker, but DET had 3 Ts.

The last game in DET was an absolute embarrassing performance by DET, but if we're talking about BARELY winning, then 1 of the 2 dominating performances was BARELY winning.

WHY IS MALIK IN THE GAME?
He can't play defense.  What did Tyrus do to draw Skiles' ire?  This is the first game all series Malik has got significant playing time, and not coincidentally, the Heat are scoring at will on the inside.

Ten points for zo and the team was outrebounded
I'm placing all the blame of this half on Malik (or Skiles, I guess).

Hopefully they stay out of foul trouble so Skiles doesn't have to make many more rotation decisions

I only bring the Detroit stuff...
because they have what you want, and right now it kills you.  I try not to say a lot about Detroit unless it's brought out of me by Mattyboy and 1958ChiTown (and sometimes NittanyBull and that guy GMSU or something).

It'll be a good eastern conference semis, whoever wins should make it to the Finals.

Whoa, hold the phone.
There's nothing that Detroit has that I would want the Bulls squad to have right now. Nothing at all.

I agree with you, though, that it's going to be a good EC semifinal, and that the winner of this matchup will make the Finals.

I do regret that the series will start so late because we'll get a whole week of both teams trying not to 'rile up their opponents' and then making up bulletin board material anyway. Remember when Hinrich said they could beat the Heat? OH MY that sure got them angry

I can see...
...why Miami has to cover the seats with white sheets in addition to everyone wearing white.  That way when everyone leaves, it's not as obvious.  What a butt-whoopin'.  Bulls played pretty badly in the first half, but I think we were all confident at halftime, knowing Shaq would get tired.

I love the karmic retribution for Riley.  He's the the man who popularized "thugging" up the game in the 90s (the Pistons invented it, but Riley popularized it).  He's got Shaq on his team - who always complained about teams applying Hack-a-Shaq.  It's a strategy that shows no respect for the game of basketball.  Riley goes out and does the same thing, and it bites him right on his wrinkled ass.  What a cowardly way to defend your title.

No reason to talk about Detroit yet.  We've got a week so bask in this for a bit, folks.

The primary effect of the NJ loss is having to
face Detroit on the road in second round, rather than the ECF.

Still, I think we can beat Detroit.

I am tempted to say Bulls in five, but I'll go with Bulls in six.

I think you should go Bulls in 5
that way when you're down 2-0 going back to CHI you'll be wrong already ;)

Do we really get a week off?
That would be very helpful considering some of those hits.

Ack
excuse the we.

What do you mean?
I got beat up pretty good this series.  I need to take the next five days off, soak in some tubs of ice, get some full body acupuncture, and try to remember to stretch.  I've been working 16 hour days and commenting only in haiku for a friggin' week.
For the remainder of this series, I will post only in haiku. Hibachi!

ahem . . .
Like the hummingbird
in autumn when the blooms fade --
this shit's getting old.

I'm shamed
I'm one of those fans who felt neglected by the Bulls after they blew the New Jersey game.  Sadly, I posted my thoughts in the darkest hours following that game.

I won't say the same negative things about Detroit, except to say that they're an excellent team and should pose a real challenge to the Bulls.

Want to bet
the Bulls still get no respect in this next series either?
My team has no "super star". It has players who have desire, determination and heart making them a "super team". GO BULLS!!!

I'm looking forward to preverbals' poetic take
This would be mine:

The Heat's center said,
"I make free throws when they count."
"0" for seven, Shaq?

"We're in trouble if we lose at home. If we lose at home, you come back and talk to me and I'll tell you: 'You know what? We're in trouble.'" Alonzon Mourning

I'm really happy
FlaBull got to see the sweep. He will probably have a few good stories to tell.

ty Sue
Just got on the highway heading home. Whew what a game.

WOW what a great way to end the series. Big Ben came through so clutch. The Bulls took over in the last part of the game and sealed the deal to make it sweet.

The bulls had a good showing and the Heat fans were terrible as expected. Real fun playing around with brooms.

You want a story I gotcha a story.

My dad and I go down to the tunnel where the Bulls players leave the court. We got pics of Gordon, TT, Thabo and others. Then we chilled for a minute or 2 more and Scottie Pippen came down and i got a pic of him and my dad got a high-5 from him. So sweeet.

I hope you aren't posting
while you're driving!

Great to see Scottie at the game.

Nah I am on the computer
while my dad drives home.

Seeing Scottie was so sweet and seeing the Bulls sweep was amazing.
