Another Pax interview is up at the Score

[From the Diaries. North is awful but a Pax interview is a Pax interview. And it's just nice to start a new thread. On a completely unrelated note, 3 results from the SBNation Readers choice voting have been posted: R.O.Y., 6thMan, M.I.P. -Matt]

A very soft-hitting but still interesting interview by Mike North this morning can be found here:

http://www.670thescore.com/pages/153118.php?contentType=34&contentId=1800

More on the Deng/Pau trade talks, plus stuff on Skiles and how he's built trust with the young guys, TT being in early today to work on his jump shots, the swap pick, Kirk, Thabo, and Ben Gordon.

i would recommend...
getting a FireFox browser and a spell-checker plug-in/add-on.

I'm sure Internet Explorer has one by now, too. It won't check grammar, but it would have given you a read underline for that definately. Oh jeeze, I just noticed how horrible that was spelled... lemme try: defentely. My fingers didn't want to do it.

Duh, Sue...
Obviously didn't get the joke, but that's cool. Whilst typing the message, I knew he misspelled definitely, but I thought it was like every other person who misspells it out--with the 'a'. Then, as one could tell from the next sentence, I looked back and noticed how horribly Miles had actually misspelled the word.

Sorry to have to explain this, but you did do a good job of trying to mock a mocker. We're all friends here.

I listened to the whole segment
This is one of the reason's I love this blog.  I do not like Mike North.

Paxson is really focused on the games in Miami.  One heartbreak game and everything can change.  This is what happened to Dallas last year in game 3.

I thought Paxson was very supportive of TT.  TT was already at the Berto Center practicing at 9AM today.

Thanks for the link to an interview I would have missed.

Interesting comment about the lottery....
When questioned about who's going to the lottery, Pax talked about how they don't have to exercise the right to swap picks with the Knicks until 2 weeks before the draft.  It sounds like he is considering holding off and making the Knicks send a representative to the lottery to possibly win a top 3 pick for the Bulls????  Wow, there must be some major heat with the Knicks to get a guy like Paxson to consider something like that.

I liked what the caller said....
about playing Miami in the first round. At first I was pissed about the whole NJ thing but now I wonder if they really didn't care if they lost to NJ because they do play welll against the Heat and Pistons and not so well against the Raptors and Nets. Looking back Im also glad we got the Heat because I think they are getting better comp. than Cleveland witch should notch up their game perhaps! Just a thought.

by joejoeEnglish94bulls4ever on Apr 26, 2007 12:44 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Speaking of Cleveland,
One of the Miami papers had this great description of the Cavs:
Chicago is a tough matchup for anybody, especially a team with an erratic perimeter defense and a superstar guard playing through injury. The Heat was looking at a first-round dance with Cleveland, a team that often looks like it's doing the NBA version of backpacking across Europe while it decides what it wants to be.

http://www.miamiherald.com/594/story/86953.html

I thought that was an excellent way of putting it, especially after watching highlights of the game last night.

Belated Heat Matchup Question
Hey, I discovered this blog mid-year, but didn't decide to start yapping until the playoffs started.

Anyway, does anyone else think that every damn move the Bulls made last offseason was with a Heat matchup in mind?

Big Ben--Shaq
PJ Brown--Shaq/Zo
Thabo--Wade
Griffin--Wade (due to his performance last year with Mavs)
T2--Zo/Posey/Haslem? (biggest question mark, but he definitely offers something in the paint)

GO BULLS!

I certainly agree with Paxson's opinion on
the importance of Tyrus developing a jump shot.

Paxson said a fifteen foot jumper would be key, though I think Tyrus could open up his game with an ever shorter 6-10 foot jumper, like Amare. It would make defenders respect his head fake and open up the  lane for him.  I've been saying that for a while.
 http://www.blogabull.com/comments/2007/4/4/185412/0068/68#68

Good to hear that Tyrus is working on that aspect of his game.

I also thought it was interesting that Paxson noted it was very hard to trust rookies in the playoffs, though Skiles trusted Thabo quite a bit in game one (perhaps out of necessity).

by 1958ChiTown on Apr 26, 2007 2:41 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

necessity
I really believe Thabo would've never gotten in if Grif was healthy or if Duhon hadn't also picked up those fouls in game 1. Especially seeing how Skiles went back to Duhon in game 2 to guard Wade in stretches.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Apr 26, 2007 2:44 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ya
I like Tyrus and think he'll be a very good player, but sometimes it seems like his only offensive move is "charge-headlong-at-the-basket-and-dunk-with-two-hands."

Which is fun to watch, and great when it works, but a nice 12 foot jump-shot would make him a lot harder to guard.  A reliable short-medium jumper would prevent defender from camping out under the basket and waiting for him (like Zo did the other night).

More respect for the Bulls
http://msn.foxsports.com/nba/story/6738210

Main part of this article is about Shaq never reaching his potential, but there is also a segment on trying to stop the Bulls' perimeter guys from scoring.  Kind of funny - it's talking about BG, Kirk and Lu, but Fox has a photo of the Spurs posted with it.

by wjb1492 on Apr 26, 2007 3:18 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I was wondering about that too.
I take it as Randy's way of comparing the Bulls to the Spurs. Which makes me smile.
PLAYOFF TIME. LETS GO CHICAGO!

by NittanyBull on Apr 26, 2007 3:30 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That article by the scout clarified for me why
Thomas hasn't got more offensive opportunities.  The Miami guards are the ones helping on penetration, not the bigs.  So Thomas's defender is staying with him, rather than leaving him to help.  Thomas isn't freed up by the Bulls penetration.

by Scotter on Apr 26, 2007 3:54 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's right
I've long thought that Shaq never even approached his potential.  Do you realize that he's only won one MVP award???  That's insane.  People bring that up sometimes - always with a dig at the writers who vote for the award.  But isn't is Shaq's fault he's only won it once?  Shouldn't it be the "Shaquille O'Neal MVP Award?  Pundits love to claim that it's because he's so big and voters would rather give it to David than Goliath.  But that's bunk.  The year Shaq won, he gote every vote except for one (from Fred Taylor who went with Iverson because he was "more important to his team").  The reason he was nearly the first unanimous winner was because partly because his team was the strongest that season, but moreso because he worked his tail off during the offseason and dominated every statistical category.  Shaq always seems like he really wants to win MVP (like when he gripes about Nash winning), but doesn't want to do the work it takes to win it.  I'd be fine with him saying "I don't care about it" if he never complained.  Actually, never mind.  I still think he is the greatest example of wasted NBA potential since Roy Tarpley. (not that Roy would've been Shaq, but, you know...)

by corey williams corey benjamin on Apr 26, 2007 4:23 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

gotta disagreee
shaq has, and will be, the most dominant player in the nba until he retired - not the best but the most domiannt.

if he ddint reach his potnetial, iw oudl hate ot see what potential would be.....i think you can ite far bettee examples of not meeting potential (telfiar as i watch news of his dismissal from the celtics, but myriad others as well).

finally; MVP also has alot of extrenuaitng circumstances; shaq has always had a superstar next to him; wings and guards are sexier picks; and shaq is consistent

Finally, the Heat's excuse for Game 2
I thought with Shaq saying 'no excuses' and not really hearing much, maybe the Heat were giving the Bulls respect this time. Well, I was wrong. At least as far as Pat Riley is concerned. He blames the New Jersey Nets.

First 2 games were great and all...
but are the Bulls ready to play 5 vs. 8? Yes, 5 vs 8. 5 Opposing players + the 3 refs. Basically, the refs are going to be taking everything away from the Bulls while giving the Heat everything. There's a study on the Truehoop blog that proves the team the league wants to win will get a huge boost from the refs. Do you think Stern will let his champions fall this easy? I expect he already talked to the refs about indirectly screwing the Bulls in every possible way. He just doesn't want the 2 stars to be swept, as it would be a PR disaster. I expect tonight's game to be over before tipoff. No way can the Bulls play 5 on 8. Bulls 67 Heat 99. Heat in 6.

Have you even watched these games?
I doubt the Heat the could rip off 4 straight wins, and you've predicted a loss in almost every regular season comment. I think it would be very bold and irrational to say the series is pretty much over in the Bulls favor (they do have to win 2 more games), but you're just doing the same thing in the opposite direction. If the Heat do beat the odds and win the series your credibility as a prognosticator will still suck.

by Paxson Jackson on Apr 27, 2007 11:33 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

This will be a tough game to win.
We need to withstand the initial onslaught as well as some Heat run in the 2nd and/or 3rd period.  If we are close going into the 4th that is going to be scary for the Heat.

If this is close with five minutes to go I will be a wreck.  Forget about sleeping tonight.  My favorite game 3 was the Bulls-Seattle final.  I forget the year - maybe 1996.  The Bulls walk into Seattle up 2 - 0 and blow them away.  The game was over by half-time.  Unfortunately these are different teams.

Go Bulls!

by chgobr on Apr 27, 2007 11:48 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

If the Bulls lose this game by more than 30, I
will attend game five in nothing but a speedo.

What are you talking about, man?

I am sure the Heat will get some favorable calls from the refs, because refs tend to respect superstars and because the Heat are at home. However, I don't really buy this conspiracy talk.  The Bulls are from Chicago, not Memphis.  Chicago is the third largest city in the country. It's a huge media market. Moreover, because of the Jordan years, the Bulls also have a nationwide (and international) following. Not to mention, think about the drama inherent in a second round series versus Detroit. Ben Wallace returning to face his old team. That would generate ratings.

I hope your post was a joke.

They're going to win tonight, either on a last second shot or by 15. I just that's enough to get Kidney Failure to shut the hell up. And lower Shaq's self-righteous ego a bit (is that even possible?)

Heat Tactics
My guess is that Wade drives to the basket every time he touches the ball, and the home-court officiating gets our big guys in foul trouble.  The D of Hinrich, Duhon*, and Thabo will be the key to the game.

Even if the NBA doesn't have a reason to hate the Bulls, they can't be rooting for a $weep.

*Could they be playing Duh right now because they want to push his stock as high as possible for a trade this offseason?

by Craig Hodges Explosion 3000 on Apr 27, 2007 12:56 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree that Wade will
be exponentially more aggressive tonight.  He'll attack the rim at every opportunity.

by 1958ChiTown on Apr 27, 2007 12:59 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe...
*Could they be playing Duh right now because they want to push his stock as high as possible for a trade this offseason?

But exposing him on repeated, nationally-televised basis (bases??? anyone?) is not the way to get it up?

Perhaps benching him, and then whenever the Bulls get knocked out, saying, "Wow, I really wish we would have played Duhon more. He could have stopped __ at the point of attack."

by tyger1147 on Apr 27, 2007 1:00 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think Du played on Tuesday because
Miami went small for that stretch in the third and fourth. The Bulls countered with the three guard lineup.

Skiles alluded to this yesterday, I believe.

Now, why he inserted Duhon and not Thabo, I don't know.

by 1958ChiTown on Apr 27, 2007 1:07 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Duhhhh
Cuz Thabo is long... He's not small

by tyger1147 on Apr 27, 2007 1:09 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Here's why playing Duhon doesn't make sense to me.
Thabo is playing about 15 minutes a game in the series thus far. Duhon about 17. They are playiugn almost equivalent minutes.

Thabo is averaging 9 PPG on about 65% shooting and 3.5 RPG.

Duhon is averaging 1.5 PPG on 0% FG shooting (hasn't hit a shot) and 2.5 RPG.

Now, Duhon has averaged more assists than Thabo (3 APG to 1 APG) and fewer TO's (O TOPG to 1 TOPG), so maybe that is the rationale, but if so, it's pretty flimsy.

by 1958ChiTown on Apr 27, 2007 1:18 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

By the way, I believe we'll see more of that
"small" Heat lineup tonight.

Riley's goal is probably to make us go small in response and spread us out so that Wade can get into the lane and to the rim without facing help defense from shotblockers. If we collapse, Wade kicks it out for three to a jump shooter.

by 1958ChiTown on Apr 27, 2007 1:11 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh, and...
For the record, I like Duhon.  When he's used correctly, that is.

by Craig Hodges Explosion 3000 on Apr 27, 2007 1:22 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

On Cold Pizza this morning
they were talking about people around the league actually enjoying the Heat struggles, sort of karmic payback for acting like the regular season doesn't matter and arrogantly thinking they can turn it up at will.

I thought this made kind of an interesting counterargument to the Stern conspiracy theorists - I think you can make a good argument that it's better for the NBA overall for a hardworking team that takes things seriously to win.  It sets sort of a bad precedent if the Heat goof around all season then are successful postseason again.  And the NBA is pretty decent at marketing things - a "cinderella" type storyline might play really well for them.

Anyway, just hadn't heard that line of argument before, so thought I'd share.
