Game thread #LAST: Bulls at New Jersey Nets

Matt:

I've said this before: watching the Bulls play in New Jersey just plain sucks.

The 10 game losing streak in that building doesn't help. The Nets team is boring, the stadium is usually half-empty and depressing-looking. The fact that it's a road game makes it non-HD picture (not to mention the sound quality) which always makes the viewing experience crap.

But wait, tonight's game is on ESPN? For some reason that makes me feel less nervous. The place should be somewhat energized, the Nets need this game nearly as much as the Bulls to guarantee them a more favorable matchup.

Cavs beat reporter Brian Windhorst relays the idea that this is the most important game of the post-dynasty Bulls. He acknowledges that game 5 in Miami (who are rooting for the Bulls, btw) last season may be a bit more important, but this is definitely a biggie.

Just win.

More on the seeing implications below, from Chalkwhite.

Star-divide

Chalkwhite:

I don't know if I need special permission to make a game thread, but I figure it's about time to have one for the most important game of the regular season.

We all know what's at stake: Win and we get a ride to the ECF without facing Miami, Detroit or Cleveland. Lose and we (might) end up facing Miami first, followed by Detroit. They really need to fix the seeding in this stupid league.

But the Nets are playing for keeps too. They could, with a loss, drop all the way to the 8 seed and get swept by Detroit. And,as I was reminded of recently by some columnist, Jason Kidd DESPISES Skiles from their Phoenix days, and will be doing whatever he can (which is quite a bit) to spoil the Bulls day.

So everybody get out their lucky socks, Hinrich jerseys, and assorted superstitious items.

We HAVE to win this game.

My humble
apolgies, PaxJax. I'm new here, and I've seen previews written as diaries before.

by Chalkwhite on Apr 18, 2007 1:47 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't mind
and in fact I'm encouraged after some games a month ago where I asked for a preview and got nothing.

Truth be told, early starts like tonight make it harder for me to get up a quality preview in time anyway.

Or what I can do is just put my thoughts on top.

Either way it's probably better for a huge game like this that the thread is up early so the comments can flow.

Why is no one afraid of the Raptors?
Am I crazy or are the Raptors underrated?  Okay, yes, I am crazy.  But the question stands, do the Bulls have anything to fear from the Raps?

I'm sure Raps fans are pissed about all this
clear path to the finals talk.  As for me, I'm just not looking at the second round yet really.  It's hard to know how Toronto is going to respond when most of the players have little to no playoff experience.

2 reasons
  1. They're all pretty new to the playoffs
  2. Bulls have won I think 12 outta their last 14 meetings. I know those older teams were not the same team but it kinda make ya feel safe against them.

by Option27 on Apr 18, 2007 3:46 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

that doesn't mean much
Because I think the Raps have beat the Bulls in their last two meetings.   (And yes, you can argue x, y, z about those losses, bad calls in the first one and wallace was out in the second)

Also, the Raps had a pretty slow start to the season, just like the Bulls----and for similar reasons too, they were integrating a lot of new players.

GWKD

by GWKD on Apr 18, 2007 4:07 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's relative
I think most think that Raps would be easier relative to Heat/Pistons/Cavs, but they'd be a fiesty challenge to the Bulls.  Since they lack experience and a superstar (Bosh is borderline) I have confidence that the Bulls would beat them in a seven game series.

for the record
I don't actually believe it.  (The only referee that I'm truly suspicious of is Bennet Salvatore. ; ) )

Stern is just as likely to want a name brand first round matchup anyway---it would be a good kickoff to the playoffs if Wade is actually healthy.

I also believe
this is the biggest game of the core's careers.

Earlier in ESPN's chat this morning, I presented the question to David Thorpe.

Chris (LA): One would argue that tonight's Bulls game is the biggest game of the core's career. Agree?

SportsNation David Thorpe: Game 5 in Miami was huge.

Although I do agree that the Miami game was insanely important, I just see this game as the most defining moment in the core's best season together.

This is it. The big one. The epicenter.
Hard to believe its here already. Game one of a one game playoff series, call it the 0th round if you will.

First round exit or seventh Finals. Kidd's triple double or two fouls in two minutes. Carter scores sixty or sixteen. Gordon takes the lead to thrity or Gordon misses at the buzzer. Hinrich in foul trouble or Hinrich with 12 assists. Thomas posterizes Nets or Carter posterizes Bulls. Everything is up in the air and in dissaray. Biggest Bulls game in ten years.

The only question is, will they show up?

This is basically a playoff game
and everything is different in the playoffs. And what about all we have to play for? We have the #2 record in the east, the Nets do not. We are the better team and there is alot on the line. We finally have a team of, i dont care if they are young, veterans with playoff experience. There is no reason we cant win this game.

The Nets strategy has become patently apparent.
Run off all Bulls misses.

In the half court, give it to Hamilton and Carter in the post and let them lower their shoulder against the smaller Bulls guards. Hope to draw fouls if you can't get to the rim.

You have to wonder if Thabo could defend better in the post.

everything wrong with the Bulls can be summed up:
Duhon on Vince Carter.

not to get all freedarko on everybody...but it's a microcosm of their maligned 'effort over talent' philosophy. I think it's a lot of bullshit, but then again we do see Duhon guarding the likes of Carter fairly often.

If you are, you'll come out in the second half and take this game.

You know what's at stake.

Come out and win it. Enough of this.

AND HINRICH DICKS OUT TO THE GROUND. I AM NOW DREADING NETS, ORLANDO, HEAT, PISTONS, CAVS IN ANY ROUND. WOW....WHAT AN EGG THEY JUST LAID. I HOPE THEY ARE HAPPY WITH THEIR 3RD FIRST ROUND EXIT. I AM SO PISSED I KNOW ITS NOT RE-BUILDING TIME BUT I AM MAD AT EVERYBODY ON THE TEAM FOR ALLOWING THE NETS TO WANT IT THIS MUCH MORE. CARTER LOOKS LIKE THE BEST PLAYER IN THE LEAGUE, SO DOES MIKKI MOORE, WHO IS THE REASON THE BULLS ARE BAD AGAINST THE NETS. WHAT A WASTE OF A SEASON IF THEY CANT PULL OUT A MIRACLE. WHAT GLORIOUS RECENT LOSSES TO CLEVELAND, TORONTO, AND DICKING MEMPHIS.

Matt,
you don't think they look a little afraid? They do to me. Moreso lost though. Like they have no idea what they're doing there and that they're supposedly a really good team.

I don't understand why they kept dumping the ball into the post and not driving/kicking or passing around the perimeter. It's like they lost the things they are good at.

Also, Boki was leaning in and turned. If he stood up straight and taken it in the chest the call is made.

For once I agreed with Walton, that play was an example of lame flop-based defense. A crime against humanity! (his words, of course).

box score perusing...
I don't know how Wallace had 7 rebounds. he seemed invisible.

Only 15 minutes though. Deng with only 4. They need huge 2nd halfs, this deficit is on them. (Hinrich's 3TOs don't help)

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Apr 18, 2007 7:53 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Deficit
The deficit is really on the lack of ball movement, I think. Few people are moving without the ball, and it seems like the person who touches it shoots it.

balls...so much momentum was gained when mikki moore hit the first shot. if it was carter or kidd or kristic or ANYBODY....but the nets wanted mikki to hit it, taking all of the weeks momentum from the bulls by letting their kryptonite take it

true story: around the start of halftime a huge millipede (or something) crawled into my room. I spent all of halftime (between typing of course) tracking it down. How do you fuck this game, THIS HUGE GAME, up?

We're running out of time.

agree: this one is over.
In my memory, I haven't remembered this bull team has won any critical game. Plus, they always play sucking ball against Nets. always be raped by some ugly net.

Ah, December
oh wait, it's not December? why is Tyrus sitting the whole 2nd half?

well it was a heck of a season....
sucks that shaq's preference will probably end it. this would be less painful if the cubs werent useless...actually it wouldnt. i love the bulls, and the two seed is gone to star power and the king. now we get to play a team that has the luckiest/most frustraiting player ever playing center for them. right now pax has to be thinking oden or bust.

stupid bulls. I always say this.
1st round exit is in hand.

by zjuic on Apr 18, 2007 8:58 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

This has to be close
To one of the most annoying bulls days i can remeber:

Knicks win
Cavs win
Min lose

And we have most likely set ourselves up for a much tougher playoff position.

CRAP

you get homecourt
who cares if you're playing the Heat in the first round?

If/when you beat them, you have to play Detroit possibly.  You more than likely have to go through Detroit or Miami anyway

i call for firings and trades
3 first round exits are enough

by hongydraw on Apr 18, 2007 9:01 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

yeesh
not quite ready to concede that third first round exit yet.

by Freethefro on Apr 18, 2007 9:03 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

yes. Trade is pending.
clean the trash and mediocrity. Kirk reaches his peak, no upside potential. Ben Gordon should be considered when a low posted is available. The big Ben is also a bait for big trade. Wallace is going downhill. completely useless in a game like this one.

wow
luckily I can see from your comment history that you're just a big turd.

coming from a cub fan....
there's always next year. stick a fork in the season, and give shaq his un deserving trophy. murphy's law pisses on chicago teams again.

I am going to throw my TV on the floor.
This is a franchise changing, terrible, inexcusable loss.

Some good news!
Mark Buehrle has a no-hitter through 8 innings tonight.

that's good news?
nope, that's piling on to an already horrendous sports night

is sox above .500 now?
They are no better than the bulls this season, at best, a 0.500 team.

by milesgmsu on Apr 18, 2007 9:03 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Frustrating
Kirk is dribbling too much again. I'm going to puke if I see Gordon fall down 1 more time. Their last bunch of shots have been butt.

somebody do something!!!
why is boone a factor in this game??

by Hiryu on Apr 18, 2007 9:05 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I'm not as worried about the loss
what I am worried about is Skiles going to his old substitution patterns, not the ones that had this amazing finish to the season.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Apr 18, 2007 9:05 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

OK, disappointing effort so far, absolutely,
but what the bloody hell is with all you people writing off the season?  The game is not over, and Miami is not a death sentence if they do lose.  Get a grip and lose the melodrama.
