Open Thread: Nets at Cavs

TNT tonight. A New Jersey win is doubleplusgood for the Bulls, as the Cavs would fall 1 game back of the Bulls for the #2 seed, and the Nets closer to the #6 seed (pushing Washington to #7 and into the Bulls welcoming arms).

Motivation
I would love to see the Nets win but looking at the standings

http://chicagosports.sportsdirectinc.com/basketball/nba-standings.aspx?page=/data/nba/standings/2006 -2007/league/standings.html

I don't see the Nets having the same motivation as Cleveland.  I just hope that the Nets give a good effort against the Knicks in the two upcoming games on the 13th and 16th.

by Incognito on Apr 12, 2007 6:43 PM CDT reply actions

If the Nets lose
do you think they are more or less likely to beat the Knicks tomorrow?

by chgobr on Apr 12, 2007 7:53 PM CDT up reply actions

depends on how the game goes
if it's close and hard fought, I think the Nets have a harder time tomorrow.  If it's a blowout, the Nets come out more focused tomorrow.  Was that the obvious answer?

by bullshooter on Apr 12, 2007 8:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Good answer
The latter occurred so I hope they come out strong tonight against the Knicks.

Open Thread, too bad
Before the game starts, I'd like to point out this as the most retarded assessment (read the comments too!) of the Bulls... ever. Jay Mariotti and Greg Couch are jealous ('cept they can actually write).

I'll shit on others from my blog again one day, but I haven't had the motivation.

Open question: is there really such a groundswell of high projections for the Bulls that such a reactionary (YEah! If thur soo smart why did they TRAde JR. SMYTH?!?) sentiment? From what I've seen most people are in a 'wait and see' approach for the Bulls this postseason, and rightfully so.

by Paxson Jackson @ Blog a Bull on Apr 13, 2007 9:05 AM CDT up reply actions

I liked the message Cavs sent tonight.
There was the "Look, we beat NJ by 18 and you only beat them by 31!  Oh, wait a minute..." message.

Then there was the "Fear us, we scored  9 more points than the Knicks in the first half" message.

I liked the magic number, as well, having never seen a magic number for a team that's behind - not to mention the logical difficulties of a "magic number" of 4 with only 3 games left...

by wjb1492 on Apr 12, 2007 10:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Magic number logistics...
If you're trailing, the magic number to catch a team, or in this case pass, is the combined number wins by you and losses by the team ahead of you.

If the Cavs win 3, the Bulls only have to lose one.
If Cavs win 2, Bulls have to lose 2 to be caught.

With the Bulls magic number of three, if the Cavs lose three, so could the Bulls, but they'll end up tied, with the tie-breaker for Chicago.

Maybe it's the "complexity" that makes these numbers "magic."

Seriously

by cubbybear on Apr 13, 2007 1:35 AM CDT up reply actions

I get how number to clinch works
Maybe it's just the standings I choose to look at, but I just meant that the standings I look at give the number of wins by team and/or losses by team behind to clinch the top spot.

I guess a better way to say it is that I'm accustomed to only seeing a "magic number" for a team that controls its own fate, not for a team that needs the team ahead of it to lose.  So to me it is idiotic for Cleveland to be talking about its "magic number" when it can't possibly do enough on its own to get there (hence my comment on 4 wins with 3 games left).

Nice explanation of the half game W/L thing - I've tried to explain that to people before and had no success.  That and the idea of being so many games over .500 seem to be confusing to my friends, but since most aren't sports fans I suppose they couldn't care less how many games over .500 the Bulls are!

by wjb1492 on Apr 13, 2007 11:53 AM CDT up reply actions

okey dokey dominokey
I guess a better way to say it is that I'm accustomed to only seeing a "magic number" for a team that controls its own fate, not for a team that needs the team ahead of it to lose.

Definitely understand what you're saying. But, by definition, a magic number includes two teams.

If the Bulls are ahead of a team by one game with both teams having 10 left, sure you can say, "If they just win the last ten, they'll win the division." But they obviously don't need to do that if the other team loses one game, or two, or so on. It's much more prescient to watch for the combined number of Bulls wins and Team Trailing losses, as that's more likely to happen.

Man, I love making mountains of molehills. I didn't know "molehills" is a real word. But my spellchecker, which apparently not a real word, says it is.

As long as we're still open-threading
Even for those surprised that Hinrich could, indeed, become a star at Kansas, the NBA seemed out of reach. Again, though, Kirk proved them wrong, becoming a starter early in his rookie season. He has almost never been out of the lineup ever since.

Still, he hasn't allowed a lucrative contract to change his approach to basketball or his life away from the game, generally speaking. Nor does he hang back on the bench, milking that final pre-game introduction for a little more crowd noise.

The consummate team player, he is already halfway to the huddle on the court before the public address announcer has completed an emphatic, "Kirk HINE-RICK!"

It's all about the team and making sure his contributions help the team progress.

This will indeed make my end of the season list and diary in the gloopiest article category.

Thanks Pax!
It's not my hometown paper but still a nice article. wjb and KT will enjoy it too.

Actually I never followed Kirk or Nick in college because they did leave the state to play. When Kirk became a Bull I had to start cheering for him.

Watching Zach Johnson beat Tiger Woods was a thing of beauty.

LOL - I did enjoy it!
Also have to agree it was pretty gloopy in places - nothing Kirk said, but some of the descriptive stuff around the quotes.  If it were about anyone else I would have been cringing at some of that stuff, so guess that's where the homerism comes in.

But I have to say, I have noticed that he's always already on the floor before they finish the introductions!

Sue, I guess we round things out, because I didn't know he existed till he signed with KU.  :)
