What about Hansbrough?

We need a smart, low-post scorer who is not a liability on defense.  I know Hansbrough is only 6'9" 230 which makes you question his ability to go to the next level, but Draft Express has me interested.  He also may be available out-of-the-lottery if the Knicks make the playoffs.  The following is from DraftExpress.

Star-divide

Hansbrough is still a force to be reckoned with in the paint, possessing an incredibly polished skill set, excellent wherewithal, and a pension for drawing contact and not being phased by it. His go-to move is his mini jump hook, which he is nearly automatic with out to five feet, and still comfortable with out to 10. With his improved confidence in his jump shot, Hansbrough also is using his face-up and turnaround jumpers more often within the paint, making his repertoire that much more dangerous. When he's not in the mood for finesse, Hansbrough will opt for using a fake or combination of fakes to get his man off balance so he can power to the hole and finish with authority, contact or not. Hansbrough is frequently double and triple-teamed, but with his man-child status, he occasionally can go through them all to draw the foul or even put the ball in the basket. At the next level, Hansbrough will not have the ease he does now scoring in the paint, and he will certainly need to work on looking to pass out of double teams more often, as overpowering the opposition won't work too well when most players possess close to, if not just as much power as you do.

Because his post game won't be as effective at the next level, Hansbrough did himself a great service by putting more work into his mid-range game, and while he showed flashes of a spot-up jumper from out to 15 feet last season, it's now become a more consistent staple of his game, and he's even starting to show range out to 18 feet now. He's definitely most comfortable between 10 and 15 feet, and his shot possesses a quick release and a decently high release point, as he's seemed to cut down on the forward motion in his shot a bit, altering it to a more upward shooting motion. This is a skill that will definitely translate to the next level, and having his shot blocked by bigger, longer, more athletic opponents will be less of a concern on the perimeter than in the paint.

Defensively, Hansbrough has always been a good post defender, but he's really improved his perimeter defense this season, which was a very wise move considering he projects to be a power forward at the next level, where most power forwards are of the face-up, perimeter variety. Lateral quickness will always be somewhat of a concern for Hansbrough, but his committal in both fundamentals and effort this season should be enough to make him at least an average perimeter defender at the next level, relative to other frontcourt players. Hansbrough is tenacious at getting up on his man, lowering his center of gravity, keeping his hands out, and shifting his feet laterally to follow his man's every step. I wouldn't bet on him to shut down Chris Bosh or Jermaine O'Neal, but Hansbrough should be able to hold his own at the next level with his recent development. Hansbrough is also a very fundamentally sound defender in the post, fighting hard for position, staying in front of his man, and using his intelligence to draw offensive fouls and force opponents into traveling violations. Due to his height and lack of vertical lift, Hansbrough has problems contesting shots over his head, and many big men in the NBA will be threats to shoot over him in the painted area.

Life is good
when you can pronounce V K correctly.  I think Hansbrough has commanded double teams inside.  If, and that is a big if, he could do this as a pro it would take pressure off our guards.

I've watched some UNC this year,
and TH isn't very strong or fast. Tyrus Thomas is bigger, quicker, and more athletic. I feel much better about him getting easy inside shots next season.

McRoberts is a better prospect than Hansbrough, and projects to be effective in the pick and roll. The passing is nice too. I still wouldn't want the Bulls to take him.

yeah
I like Hansbrough in college but I'm worried he might turn out to only be bench guy in NBA.  Unfortunately he is built kind of like Fizer, a name I know most Bulls fans hate to hear.

I'm hoping
Pax is able to buy a late first round pick to get Nick Fazekas.

I like both Hansbrough and McRoberts, but am still not 100% sold on either.  With that said, I wouldn't be mad if Pax drafted either of them assuming there wasn't anyone better to take.

Hansbrough
Has some serious post up skills.  But he is too short and not athletic enough for them to be effective in the NBA.  If we are talking about getting any Pf or Center who can do some pickin and rollin then might as well pick up a more rounded big man who can play better defense, pass and do other things. As much as I dislike McRoberts, he is a better prospect than Hansbrough.

McRoberts did not look good at the
end of the VCU game.  He appears to be a substitute NBA center at best from what I've seen.

Currently
With the Knicks out of the playoffs, ESPN is projecting the Bulls will pick Yi Jianlian with the 14th pick.  Appears to be a finesse player but based on this at least we know he can dunk on nonathletic stiffs... in a commercial.  I hope he does the crossed-arms thing after every dunk he makes in the NBA.  That would be awesome.

And here's one of Yi and Gasol dunking on each other.

The problem is easy to solve
Get the draft rights of Luis Scola from the Spurs. He is a polished low post treat, with very good quickness, size and smartness. He is just what the Bulls need.

He's 6'9"
and scrappy. Maybe gritty. Big heart. High potential for hustle. Hope no one's thinking, "You had me at six foot nine."

A possible use for our 2nd round pick
Mirza Begic, 7'3".  From DraftExpress -

"Mirza is definitely emerging as a serious candidate for the second round considering his enormous size and soft hands. Begic towers over opponents and collects rebounds with ease, often he is able to snatch the ball even when he doesn't establish proper position. He also shows good reactivity and touch, putting the ball in the basket immediately after receiving a pass or catching an offensive rebound. This is sometimes a problem with the players of his size -reactivity and reflexes- but Begic is fine as far as that area is concerned. Overall he is a decent athlete, runs the court pretty well, has solid footspeed and is well coordinated. His upside lies in his work ethic, intelligence and feel for the game. Begic has soft hands for a big man, and he's a decent shooter from the mid-range area, even if his mechanics are not the fastest, he doesn't have much problems releasing his shot considering his size."

About Scola
He isnt just a gritty player that can make a basket or two. He is the kind of dominant force down low that demands a double team. He's a good rebounder and hustles all the time on the court. His attitude is the oposite of Gasol (at least NBA's Gasol, because the Spain's Gasol is a totally different guy).
What is important about Scola is that he can run the floor pretty well for his size and he is only 26, entering his "prime". No development time, he can contribute instantly.
Scola is a free agent next season, and the Spurs are willing to trade his rights because he can't play alongside Duncan. He is like a little undersized argentinian version of Duncan.

by Chilai on Mar 18, 2007 4:39 AM CDT reply actions

What would the Spurs want for Scola's rights?
Tagging on to Matt's most recent post, would the Spurs value the Bulls' Knicks pick? There was talk a few weeks ago that they needed a bit more energy and youth. Don't know a whole lot about the draft but it sounds like a bunch of good athletic wings will be available at the tail end of the lottery. Perhaps a Stephen Jackson type for the Spurs run next year?
