Game Thread #66: Bulls vs. Boston Celtics

For yous who like to come up with a causal relationship between the Bulls success and what color jersey they wear, the Bulls are wearing green tonight for St. Patrick's day, who, as we know, is the patron saint of selling more jerseys. (In a related note, a section of the Chicago river today seemed like it was dyed shit-brown, and I have no idea what holiday parade that's supposed to celebrate.)

And in a delicious bit of irony, they're playing the Celtics. I think if the Bulls played the Celtics 100 times the Bulls would win 106 times (based on point differential, of course). At least in their current states, the Bulls are just an especially bad matchup for the Celtics. As we saw in the game Sunday, Ben Wallace can single-handedly shut down Al Jefferson, and you can say the same with Luol Deng and (the fat) Paul Pierce. And it's not just injuries, even when healthy the Celtics are no good defensively, and the Bulls can really pick bad defensive teams apart, especially at home.

Of course, any given Tuesday a team playing to lose can beat a team playing to win. But I'm with Luol Deng, who's words today are surely to get an unnecessarily reactionary blog post any minute now:

"We have 17 games left, we really think we can win all of them. The schedule is in our favor right now."

Yeah Luol! Of course that's some dreaded potential bulletin board material to the Pistons, but only if the Pistons are whiny idiots. And that of course is likely. (There are few examples of sports nonsense I hate more than 'bulletin board material')

This is an open game thread, where you shouldn't be scared of any team. At least, er, in the Eastern Conference. (and playing at home helps).

short for yous guys
I thought about putting a (sic) in there but does anyone do that for their own writing?

Either way, I'm in a giddy mood this afternoon (one reason being I'm going to the game) which is why you get so many mean-spirited jokes in this preview.

The Matt Watson post at
the dial-up monopoly (that used to be a good thing) was almost worth blogging about, but I don't have that option anymore. Even more so when I read the Deng quote this morning. The Fanhouse might be the leader in quota driven blogging right now. That's not to say I've never regretted clicking "publish."

I wish I had an Etch A Sketch to draw a parallel or two for other sports, because I've read and heard plenty from athletes and coaches about how they don't make big speeches, even more so before a 'big game'. I like the it's-a-job-we're-professionals lines from the Bulls, it's certainly closer to reality (mine at least) than the ridiculous salad bowl of honor Riley has in the Heat locker room.

damn
I didn't see Matt's quota comment on the Fanhouse post.

Hopefully returning home
will bring back Deng's jumpshot.  It'd also be nice if Skiles let Thabo off the bench as well.  After 24 min in his solid game against the Warriors, he hasn't played more than 7 min and only played 1 against Boston.  Having Duhon and Griff both playing  more than 20 min/game is bad for my health.

.500+10
A win tonight gets the Bulls to 10 games over .500. Mentioned also over at Sweet Home Sports.

I asked when the Bulls would get to this point way back in January! It's taken way longer than expected (the Bulls were 6 games over when I posted).

Assuming a win tonight, let's hope the Bulls continue their recent trend of strong late season pushes(of course avoiding the whole "out in the first round" thing they've been doing as well...).

Go Bulls!

It's nice that he's finally learning
what he should and shouldn't do (for the most part) in the NBA. If we can get him to stop taking 16-20 footers this season, I'll be pleased.

Enough trading baskets
I'm only listening to the game so don't have a great read on this, but are the Bulls trying on defense or are they coasting?

Would be great to seal this off with good defense the second half of this quarter to build a double digit lead. I don't think anyone wants to fool around with the Celtics if Pierce is going to hit his shots tonight.

by paxson43 on Mar 13, 2007 8:16 PM CDT reply actions

Paul Pierce is hitting buckets
that's about the extent of it. Thabo played him tough, but Pierce just was making them.

by james@lifeinthecell on Mar 13, 2007 8:20 PM CDT up reply actions

It was on the radio feed
Sounded like he was eager to tip in someone's shot and the refs felt he was too eager. He'll learn.

Other than
his fouls TT is playing pretty well. That reverse dunk was astounding.

We need to come out strong in the second half.

The Celtics announcers
Noted that, upon being subbed out, Tyrus stopped and asked Skiles a question. They were impressed that he was playing such a great game and still was eager to learn. Hopefully this, and his improved play, are signs he's maturing or some other cliche.

Tyrus Thomas potential
I am one of those who is often negative about thomas but I am starting to see that the guy is a finisher and he will get his points down low in the right situations.  If he starts shooting 15 foot jump shots consistently (as well as free throws), he can become a true offensive threat.

Instead of kicking and driving it will be more like driving and lobbing it to thomas. that would be wonderful.

Some thoughts from Row A
I'm definitely not bragging.  I paid face value (plus Ticketmaster charges) at the start of the season for section 117, Row A, seats 5&6.  It was neat to be right behind press row and Ben Wallace's family.  You could see Matt's Man Sam, up close (he's skinnier than I realized and also looking older than ever, which of course makse sense since he is older than he's ever previously been).  However, those seats also happen to be directly behind the basket.  Which means you pretty much can't see a damn thing.  You have to spend the entire game switching from craning your neck to see the jumbotron to going back to the court when they get to a visible section of court.  For that much cash, these seats aren't worth it.  They should be noted as obstructed view.  Maybe I should have known better, but when it just says "Row A" and some numbers it's hard to tell.

Anyway, it was a fun game to attend.  Tyrus was all over the place - tons of energy, even if he failed to get a ball or missed a putback or something.  Ben Wallace is amazing to watch up close.  You really can't pick up his impact on TV (maybe he had a good game compared to others, but it's still different live).  Brian Scalabrene is downright hilarious to watch in person, as is Doc Rivers.

The Bulls announcer continues to screw up names, calling Delonte West "Dante" West at one point.

"Lola - your favorite circus dog" is the second-worst timeout performance I've ever seen at the UC.

Ben Gordon shot like crap, particularly from the line.  Near the end of the game, he kept grabbing his forearm or elbow and doing that "in pain" wince he often gives.  The Celtics clearly devised the bulk of their defensive gameplan around keeping the ball out of his hands, and the Bulls did the right thing in setting up the other players for points.  I sure hope he's OK, because if not, we're dead.

Kind of a sloppy game, but with Gordon being a non-factor and Nocioni still out, I'll take this win.

Matt - Best game preview ever.  You had me cracking up.  (Sooo wanted to use "yous" there, but it didn't make sense.)

You had Row A seats? Lucky.
I went to the Phoenix/Dallas playoff game last season. Being my first pro basketball game in a while, I remember thinking "Damn, Dirk doesn't really look as tall as they put him out to be. How can they play in such a small court?" Nothing wrong with Nowitzki or US Airways, it was that my seats were that bad.

Good recap though.

Krikey, I just saw the Tyrus highlights on ESPN.
That one handed dunk over Jefferson (I think that's who it was, anyway) was sick, sick, sick.

So was the alley oop reverse.

Wow.

I think my
new name for Tyrus will be "The human highlight reel". He was just spectacular last night. I hope that is something he can bring every night. I thought he was going to be good I just wasn't expecting it so quickly. Nice to see he and big Ben step up and make plays since our guards were well covered.

Hope things go as well for the Bulls tonight.

My favorite thing...
...was seeing very little of Chris Duhon and more of Thabo & Griff.

Du's stats don't really look that horrible, but it just seemed like he was really awful in his limited time last night.  The offense bogged down during his run (I think it was the tail end of the 1st Q when they gave up the lead).

Oh yeah, and my son was pissed that all those missed free throws (16!) cost him his free Big Mac.

Wrecked 'em? Damn near killed 'em!
