Trade deadline eve thoughts

UPDATE: Found a new rumor: Bulls are interested in the Bucks' Brian Skinner. Former Bull! (for about a day). He has a team option for '07, makes around $5m. Just a standard 'big' (note: by 'standard' I mean he's pretty useless except for being big. I don't see it as an upgrade over even Allen or Sweets)

***

Man, the past two days were not the most convenient ones to be kept away from computer access all day. Luckily there were no actual deals that would've required time-sensitive discussion. Just plenty of rumor.

Marty Burns of SI.com wrapped up today's chatter in a neat little package. I'll grift out the Bulls info:

The Pau Gasol trade talks have cooled considerably. Apparently Bulls GM John Paxson is holding firm in his stance that he doesn't want to trade either Luol Deng or Ben Gordon. One Eastern Conference GM said he wouldn't be surprised if the Bulls and Grizzlies pulled off the deal at the last minute, but he believed Memphis was content to keep the 7-foot Spaniard until the summer.

For what it's worth, the NBA also announced over All-Star Weekend that the Grizzlies would be playing an exhibition game in Spain next fall. Would David Stern & Co. have agreed to send Memphis over there without at least some indication from Jerry West that Gasol would still be around?

Meanwhile, rumors of a Zach Randolph deal for Chicago have begun to regain steam. Randolph is just the kind of low-post scorer the Bulls need, and his Michigan State background fits with coach Scott Skiles. However, his past character issues, lack of defense and big contract make it doubtful Paxson would mortgage his team's future on him. Besides, the Blazers continue to insist they aren't trading Randolph. Chicago might instead make a run at Shareef Abdur-Rahim, who has been platooning with Kenny Thomas in Sacramento.
...

While much of the focus has been on big names, it is beginning to appear as if this year's trade deadline might feature more small deals. Chicago's Chris Duhon [is] among the names that have been bandied about.

Who knows when it comes to Gasol. It's been bantered about so much in the past few weeks, I think my thoughts are pretty well known (to summarize: trade the lesser assets and/or the Knicks pick-I don't get you draftphiles sometimes- but don't deal Deng/Hinrich/Gordon). One thing that still digs at me every time it's mentioned is the idea of the 'core' consisting of four players, including Nocioni. I think that's a completely ridiculous evaluation of Nocioni in comparison to Deng/Hinrich/Gordon (the actual 'core'). So when the idea of trading two of that core is mentioned, one can hope at the very least that Nocioni is automatically one of those. I'm still hoping that the deal can be done without the three in their 'true' core. I'm going to guess (or hope) that Pax isn't budging on including Deng/Hinrich/Gordon. It seems to me what it'll come down is how bad Memphis is hurting financially, and as a result how much pressure is being put on by ownership to move Gasol. There's been indicators all over that spectrum though, making it as hard to figure as the whole trade rumor itself.

So if Gasol's out, and KG is completely off the radar. Do the Bulls have a contingency plan?

As Burns mentions, one lesser name is Shareef Abdur-Rahim. The Sacramento Bee (hattip to hoopshype) is mentioning a source regarding this as well, as does Mike McGraw's column today (although that one is only speculation). Tom at Sactown Royalty has a couple posts regarding this, although he seems to think getting that Knicks pick would be part of a deal. I sincerely doubt that. Abdur-Rahim does have 3 more years on his deal, but it's at a relatively low price. One major issue is his health, as the knee problems that had New Jersey backing out of a deal for him before last season has crept up often during this season. And while he is a post scorer, he's also undersized.

While also undersized, Zach Randolph does make sense (for even less than what I'd offer for Gasol, obviously) because he's potentially a star talent.  But I'd be happy with such a pursuit only if the Bulls know ahead of time that they can 'control' (don't like using that word, but you know what I mean) him. I'm not sure having Skiles show off his Michigan State letterman jacket really would help much, but I trust that the organization is doing their due diligence to find out if he'd fit in personality-wise. And while that statement may cause some to roll their eyes, Randolph is signed for $17.3m in 2010-11, so I'm all for being really sure he'd fit in before acquiring him. Blazers president Steve Patterson laughed the idea off, for what that's worth.

A similarly bad apple has entered the radar screen today: Bonzi Wells. He may not be a big, but he does score in the post. And even if he's spent most of the season out-of-shape and in VanGundy's doghouse in Houston, the risk is minimal: he's a free agent after the season, not only meaning no future salary obligation but perhaps a nice contract-year push. Hey, if Tim Thomas can do it for the Suns, why not Bonzi for the Bulls? The Houston Chronicle's Jonathan Feigen mentions the Rockets need for a veteran point guard. Hmm...I can think of one who I wouldn't mind seeing leave...

(That's right, no post goes without a shot at Duhon!)

Anyway, I'm pretty excited for tomorrow: big deals or small it's one of the more fun days of the year. I'm at the point where I'm so drained from reading all the rumors I'd be surprised if anything big (Gasol) actually happened. Using their boatload of expiring deals was the plan going into this season, but if it can't be done reasonably, so be it. It's better than making a huge mistake...and a minor deal would be a nice way to help the team and perhaps help re-energize them towards the Eastern Conference crown. As the saying goes: trust in Pax.(right?)

I do love trade rumors.

Just want them to all go away soon so we can concentrate on the actual games.

The East just got more wide open
Wade just popped his shoulder and was actually crying on the sideline.  They had to get a wheelchair to take him back to the locker room.  That's got to be pretty serious if a shoulder injury hurts too much to walk.  This could be doubly bad because Miami and the Nets are the only thing standing in the way of the Knicks going to the playoffs.

by bullshooter on Feb 21, 2007 10:17 PM CST reply actions

I'm evil.
All I could think was "looks like Wade don't get up nine."

by wjb1492 on Feb 21, 2007 10:25 PM CST up reply actions

not sure what you were thinking
but Wade is staying in Houston and going to the hospital, so I don't see him playing anytime soon.

by bullshooter on Feb 21, 2007 10:37 PM CST up reply actions

It was expected
He's too good to play so recklessly, a major injury was expected and you can only cheat the odds so many times. If you accelerate full speed and dive into the lane on offense, the odds will get you if not this game, then the next.

by vlad001 on Feb 21, 2007 10:44 PM CST up reply actions

Sorry that wasn't clear.
You know the commercial, "Fall down seven, Get up eight," playing on how rough and tumble Wade plays?  And just to clarify, I don't wish a serious and painful injury on him, nor am I happy when anyone gets hurt - just that the commercial was the first thing I thought of.

by wjb1492 on Feb 21, 2007 10:58 PM CST up reply actions

Am I an asshole for not feeling sorry for them?
Sorry, I don't.  When you treat the regular season as a joke like the Heat have the last two years, you run the risk that you might miss the playoffs altogether if one of your stars gets hurt.

by Big D on Feb 21, 2007 11:34 PM CST up reply actions

Feeling sorry?
I'd be surprised to find anyone feeling sorry for this sorry ass team. With the exception of Wade and Shaq, the team is made up of a bunch of thungs and ego-maniacs. It's a shame a superstar has to get hospitalized for an injury, but hey, can't say no one warned them. They miss the playoff this year, and they're done, because no matter how good Wade is, those fossils around him won't be able to do anything next year.

by vlad001 on Feb 21, 2007 11:56 PM CST up reply actions

Wade
Dwyane Wade went down hard tonight, in a wheelchair with tears in his eyes grimacing in pain. To me it looked like a broken collar bone or a torn shoulder. With this injury, it looks like the Heat are out of the playoffs, leaving Detroit and Cleveland as the Bulls main competition.

This is crazy the Bulls almost got Muhammed. Talks broke off.Thats all we need is an over paid guy named Muhammed who can't catch.

Wells? Im not sure I get that one. Unless they make a few trades?
Wells hits a half court shot. Trades off.

Rahim for Sweets would be a nice upgrade.

I have no idea whats going on after reading those articles in the Tribune.  This is a mess. I don't even this Paxson does.

Luol Deng, Thabo Sefolosha, the expiring contracts of P.J. Brown and Michael Sweetney and a top-three protected first-round draft pick?-NO THANKS SAM SMITH.

The Bulls continue to be linked to Sacramento's Shareef Abdur-Rahim in their search for a low-post score because Chicago's well-chronicled talks with Memphis to acquire Pau Gasol, according to one well-placed source, "aren't even on life support at this point."

Would they be dumb enough to take Duhon? It gives another $3 mil in cap space after this year and gets Duhon out of Thabo's way for next season.

Crazy talk!
Someone mentioned picking up both Maggette and Gasol in a thread... I figured that I'd try to make a three-team deal work for Chi/Memphis/LAC and here is what I came up with: http://games.espn.go.com/nba/features/traderesult?players=10~99~2381~2435~3028~996~558~2771~497& teams=29~29~29~29~12~4~12~29~4

Memphis gets major cap relief plus Gordon who is cheap and could help fill seats

Clips get rid of Maggette, get a good scorer (Miller) and a big guard (Sefo) in case they wind up dealing Livingston down the road (because he, uh, isn't that good)

Bulls get the big man they need (Gasol) plus a bigger scoring 2 who can replace Gordon's scoring and is no worse than BG at defending

Just passing time until the trade deadline...

somewhat older rumor
I think this was first published yesterday, but it's new to this site, anyway:
Dallas was interested in acquiring P.J. Brown from the Bulls, but Chicago was still waiting to hear whether Jerry West would lower his asking price on Pau Gasol and drop his insistence on receiving Luol Deng in return. Also, the Mavericks were looking to move only Austin Croshere in a trade for Brown, and Chicago does not want Croshere. The only possibility for that trade to happen would be if a third team was willing to take Croshere and give away what the Bulls were looking for -- an effective low-post scorer.

Obviously the Bulls don't want Croshere, but the idea of getting a third team involved is interesting, as Croshere has a big expiring contract (like Brown), and perhaps a team likes Croshere more than Brown as a player (since they have similar contracts).

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Feb 22, 2007 10:56 AM CST reply actions

Hmmmmm
I don't really see a 3rd team taking Croshere. Ha! Cubens trying to get PJ for Croshere. Austin's career is ova! Nice try Cuben.

by JoJoEnglish94bulls4ever on Feb 22, 2007 11:05 AM CST up reply actions

The CHI-MEM-LA
Three way I just posted removes $100 million of the $130 million in contracts the Grizz are currently holding.  Of course they have the option to resign new players (Thomas, Gordon) and some of their own (Gay), but it gives a ton of cap space and a good shot at #1 or #2 in the draft as well as the Bulls pick via the Knicks.

by rednomore on Feb 22, 2007 11:07 AM CST reply actions

Are you trying to create
a top power in the West?

by JoJoEnglish94bulls4ever on Feb 22, 2007 11:10 AM CST reply actions

If the three way doesn't work
We could get Maggette for Gordon and Sweets.

Doesn't solve our post problem, but that won't stop Maggette from driving to the basket and getting to the line, where he is deadly.  His contract ($21m over next 3) is much better than what Ben will hold us up for after the season.

by rednomore on Feb 22, 2007 11:12 AM CST reply actions

the Bulls would be saving money
because Maggette simply isn't as good as Gordon, especially over the next 3 years.

From Si.com
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/basketball/nba/02/22/deadline.buzz/index.html

* Gasol appears to be staying put in Memphis, although it could change with one phone call. Bulls GM John Paxson has been playing his cards close to the vest, but is not expected to change his mind about giving up Luol Deng or Ben Gordon in a trade for the Grizzlies' 7-footer. Paxson has been checking on the availability of other power forwards around the league (Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Nick Collison), according to sources, which could mean he's seeking a backup plan to help Chicago land a low-post threat. Despite reports to the contrary, the Bulls have no real interest in Zach Randolph, according to sources.

I would love to have Collison.

I am not sure who you are referring to
when you say "scrappy."

Obviously, it's clear that you don't like Duhon, but it is equally clear that he has been playing well since the Bulls started their second West Coast road trip.

You also appear to disdain Noce, which is hard to understand. The team has struggled in his absence. We miss his scoring off of the bench.

Who else qualifies as scrappy?

I think about these things in very simple terms. I grew up in Chicago. I live in Chicago. I've been rooting for the Bulls for as long as I can remember. I have season tix and, like everyone else here, I watch all the games. The trade deadline has passed. This is our Chicago Bulls team. This is it. This is the only team the Bulls will have this year. This is the team only I will follow.

It doesn't seem to make much sense to needlessly criticize the players on the team I root for.  I just hope they play hard, play intelligently, improve steadily over time, and win.

no trades - for now
If Bulls truely did not make any deals today then it could actually be very good for the team.  They are still young and not a lot of longer term contracts.  Pax can see how we do in the playoffs this year and what pick/player the Bulls get in draft.  Then in offseason he can decide what to do with Deng/Gordon/Noc.  Overall this buys Bulls more time to decide on this years rooks and to see who that can get in 07 draft.  A championship wasn't likely in 07 and Bulls should be competive in eastern playoffs so this could be best long tern stradegy - staying pat for now and waiting

It would be a calculated risk since he has been injured and innefective but if he could be had for a cheap price than he is a potential scoring big guard.  We dont know if he is still explosive but until his injury he was one of the league's rising stars that was starting to score 20-25 a night.
