Future Bulls coach speaks

Assistant Ron Adams was on the Score (who I don't know if he's a Skiles guy or not) this morning:

  • Staff chose to focus on defense to both shore that up as well as not dwell on the shooting struggles.
  • Joe Smith was DNP'd Monday night mostly due to lingering knee trouble.
  • Has never seen so many players 'off their game', especially mentally.
  • Need more 'juice' (Williams?) individually and collectively.
  • Cannot dwell on the losses, something Kirk does especially.
  • "Thabo is a mystery. I think he came into this season thinking he has to be more offensively assertive, and got away from what he does well"
  • Team doesn't do a good job of 'finding the hot hand', although points out they did find Nocioni alot last night.
  • On Ben Wallace: just says he's "up and down, but would obviously like to see it more game in and game out". Liked his agressiveness around the rim last night (something I completely disagree with).  Encourages him to shoot the hook and not the fadeaway, yet he fades away as to not get fouled. "When he's on his game, he energizes a team that does not have the energy that we've wanted". (all-time 'energy' quote, right there)
My overall thoughts: Tyrus Thomas was never mentioned, and neither (pretty much) was talking about strategy or rotations or matchups or whatever coaches do besides saying 'try harder, fellas'.

the Mopey Iowan strikes again
Adams was hired back when Bill Cartwright pretended to be in charge.

Some Pax gold:

He has a defensive background and the ability to communicate with players in this league, which are two attributes that I believe will help us tremendously.

well then I guess
he would be first in line for the interim tag, right?

Ron Adams
was on Mr. Bills staff

Thanks for that clarification
But, as stated above, he is a Pax hire.  Pax asked Pete Myers to go back to coaching, and hired Ron Adams and Johnny Bach as coaches because he wasn't thrilled with Bill's coaching staff.

I don't know anything about any other staff.

Jim Boylan is the "Lead Assistant Coach"
I don't know what the difference is between that and a regular old assistant coach, but wouldn't that put Boylan first in line?  Hypothetically speaking, of course.

Boylan is Skiles'
hire.  Not Pax.  Skiles names his lead assistant.  Boylan and Skiles go way back.

probably means
he's just a Skiles guy.
"Jim is a quality coach who brings a strong knowledge of the game and valuable experience that will benefit our team," said Bulls Head Coach Scott Skiles. "We are happy to have him join our organization and I look forward to working with him again."

Boylan, an 11-year NBA coaching veteran, reunites with Chicago Head Coach Scott Skiles, after serving under Skiles during the 2000-01 campaign with the Phoenix Suns. He comes to the Bulls via Atlanta having worked on Terry Stotts' staff this past season.

I'm relieved
that Joe was DNP'ed due to knee trouble (not that I want him to be injured), rather than Skiles's rather strange lineups.

About Tyrus
I didnt watch the game, but i listened to it last night on the score. AFter the game they did discuss why tyrus didnt play more, and Bill Wennington said that on at least one offensive play tyrus was out of position, and the guards were telling him to move, and he wouldnt do it, whether he didnt understand what to do, or just didnt want to do it remains a mystery. Then on the defensive end he missed his assignment a few times, which wennington said really pisses skiles off.
im trying hard to become the next kirk hinrich, therefore im doing nothing more than being the next chris duhon.

Leadership
Why is leadership a question that is asked so little of this organization?  Who leads the team on the floor?  This was always the problem during the Floyd era.  Over the recent playoff seasons, the leader has been Kirk.  He's living in a cave this season.

It took a minute, but
I was able to catch (eventually) your reference to juice. I guess you could have just as easily put Mark McGwire or Jose Canseco in parentheses, since what the Bulls really need is a magic potion injected into their hindquarters.

It seems to me that overall the Bulls' philosophy for hiring a coaching staff is very much the same as assembling the team, some hard working, nice-guy types, none of whom are super high profile. I'd be shocked if they ever tried to pull an Orlando Magic, for example, and attempt to lure a big name such as Billy Donovan or even Stan Van Gundy.

Skiles has been (before this season) every bit the strong fundamentals/point-A-to-point-B coach Pax envisioned, and he has been brash and harsh with his team when they've needed it (and at times when they have not needed it). His staff has seemed to fall into place behind those strong fundamentals, and in this way, the coaching staff has done its job.

The same cannot be said for the individual players, unfortunately. That's where there is a huge leadership void. And that is what calls into question this whole Paxson blueprint--at some point you need someone to be a leader on the floor.

"But Butch, you said we could challenge you anytime we wanted to." "That's because I thought you never would."

Why not take a european
coach. He will be used to a jump shooting team that hustles on defense.

Ettore Messina ? Dusko Ivanovic ?

The Game chose him !
