Open Game Thread #29: Bulls vs Orlando Magic

The feel-good Boylan era keeps going. Or gets destroyed by Dwight Howard. I guess we'll see.

1pm CST start, on WGN. That means we don't even get the brief lucidity in a broadcast where Stacy King craps on Nocioni's shot selection. That's all I have to look forward to nowadays.

Ya know...
...if he ends up averaging 25 ppg off the bench, I don't give a damn. Also, his minutes haven't dropped in the two games, so if that keeps up, does it really matter?

Why isn't Wayne Larrivee banished?
Dude left he Bears play by play booth to do Packer games.  That's treason in sports.

He should be banished from Chicago broadcasting.

Pippen doesn't sound like a guy that likes Ben Wallace's contract in the Sam Smith articles from today.

He's a starter.
Starters shoot more than bench players. Plus, he's a veteran. There's an obligation to play him so there's an obligation for him to shoot a bunch.

Good offensive quarter.
Luol is developing a legit post game. He needs to finish in the lane, though.

Smith is playing well.

That being said, the defensive execution was pretty horrendous.

I notice that:
  1. the Bulls are winning
  2. the Bulls seem to be having fun
  3. the Bulls bench is outscoring the other bench yet AGAIN today
  4. BG is playing well (HOW many games in a row now?)
So I would say that Boylan has a plan that seems to be, at least right now, working.
Whatever we may like or dislike about the line ups or the subs, I really can't remember the Bulls looking like this all season for this many games in a row.

ok, Gordon's been tricked
into being good again. So now we can start him, right? Is it worth playing Duhon so much to keep this illusion of the bench making Gordon better at basketball?

At least make a trade for a 'big guard' to play those guaranteed 12 minutes a game.

If the future holds the same
as far as the starting line up -
I would like to see TT ease into starting in place of Smith, largely due to TT's energy. I think that would better preserve Joe's health and he does seem to provide pop coming off the bench.

As far as BG and Du - even though BG is more accomplished than Du, it seems to serve the team better with Du starting and BG coming off the bench....right now anyway.

Keep it up gentlemen.

That last play
was a classic example of how valuable Wallace can be if the Bulls had someone at the 4 spot who could constantly score inside.

That was how Ben used to be so amazing in Detroit.

I knew someone would bring that up as soon as it happened. I don't get the "of all people" part. Dwight Howard is an athletic freak. He's 6'11", but he's built like a "normal" person a foot shorter. He moves the same way, too.

That's because he doesn't have confidence

Captain Kirk never hits a timely shot.  (Kirk shoots a three from the corner > CLANK!  Duh, well it's Duh, enough said.  At least Duhon scored one more point than I did this afternoon.  But I wasn't sweating, just enjoying my beverage.  Ben Wallace?  Well, why would you ever give him the ball?  The only other player on the Bulls who is willing to attempt the big shot is Noce.

Most of the world didn't really expect the Bulls to even be in contension in this one.  They played well, against a team they've had trouble with, and on the second day of a back-to-back.  (And with the Magic hitting 44% from 3!)  You can't be too down on them for coming up one bucket short.

I expected them to go to the Finals
so everything's a dissapointment, especially when the team is drifting farther and farther away from relevance while underplaying the guys that were suppsosed to make them better.

For today, they played better than expected, I guess. This better be the only loss on this schedule stint.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Dec 31, 2007 4:02 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Matt's right
Before the celtics made their trades most people pegged the bulls to be in the east finals or the nba finals. even after the celtics got garnet they should have been top 3. not losing to dwight howard and the 120 million dollar 3 point shooter rashard lewis

So we should all be miserable all season
because the Bulls aren't living up to preseason hype?  I'd rather go forward from this point - can't change the past, and all those other cliches.  I can understand people being upset that the young guys still aren't getting burn (or that the wrong guys are), but I wish that wouldn't get in the way of acknowledging when the guys who play play well.  And, in my opinion, this was a great game.

I have to vent about four horrendous plays:
(1) Second to last play in regulation. Howard jumps out to hedge Gordon, which is the standard way that teams handle Gordon, and Gordon has the ball stolen by Howard! WTF! A fucking guard should never have the ball stolen by a seven foot center. Why does Gordon have trouble with that hedge so often? If there was no turnover there, the Bulls likely would have won;

(2) Last possession in regulation. Gordon has the ball again. He gets Lewis on a switch. He dribbles at the three point line and forces up a three pointer against a much taller player. Predictably, the ball ricochets off the backboard. (BTW, I singled out Gordon because he was the ballhandler on the two fateful plays, but obviously he was excellent the remainder of the game.) The Bulls have to revamp their end of game sets;

(3) Jameer Nelson is a mascara wearing, midget fucking scrub. Allowing him to score twenty plus is a humiliating joke. And you want to know the worst part? He did the same thing to the Bulls LAST year. Unreal. Duhon's defense on the second to last Magic field goal in OT was disgusting. Terrible;

(4) The defense on Turk on the game winning shot was also abominable. I believe the Magic ran the exact same play they ran at the end of regulation. And yet he gets a wide open shot. Who the fuck was supposed to guard him there?

Um... Du Sux
DuDu single handedly lost this game for the Bulls.  His ill advised 3 point shot on a fast break in ot and his defense on J. Nelson on the Magic's 3nd to last possession(?) are the reasons the Bulls lost this game.

He was open for the 3... but he is Duhon, making the shot ill advised.  (wallace stole the ball at half ct, then dished it to Deng who passed it to an open DUDU in the corner)

by Zac23 on Dec 31, 2007 4:35 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

what's more important, BlogABullians?
(I'm asking, seriously)

Gordon 'finding himself' as a bench player? Or keeping Duhon out of the starting lineup?

If you believe in both, then a trade is the best option, I suppose.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Dec 31, 2007 4:44 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I figure BG will be back starting very soon
It's happened every other year - the coach wants to "do something" so BG goes to the bench, but it doesn't take long for Du's problematic offense to shine through.  (0-6, 2 missed free throws, anyone?)  I'm just glad that starting doesn't mean Du's seeing tons of time, other than today with Kirk in foul trouble.  The "finding himself" talk is mildly irritating, but if he can deal with it then so can I.

Gordon coming off the bench isn't the issue
At least it isn't if he continues to play the same minutes he did when he was starting.  I'll give Boylan credit for that; at least he hasn't cut Gordon's minutes like Skiles did whenever he benched Gordon.  The problem is that they have no one who can replace him in the starting lineup without creating a huge dropoff.  Duhon shouldn't be playing more than 10-15 minutes a game.  All the people who were pointing out Gordon's deficiencies last week were really missing the point.  Yeah, Gordon's got plenty of flaws, but the Bulls don't have another guard on their bench who's even close to him.  Maybe Thabo was supposed to be that guy, but he's nowhere close right now.

Went to the game
Concise reflections:
  • Thomas and Thabo should play more.
  • Duhon should play less.
  • Wallace was worth a lack of scoring, but needs to practice layups.
  • Nocioni should be banned to shoot within 5 feet.
  • Gordon is back to rookie form(is that a good thing?).
  • Game was lost on Jameer Nelson's layup, lack of communication.
  • Bulls collapsed on drivers more than was warranted.  We'll never know whether they would make all of the drives.
  • Bulls playing much better since Boylan took over.

Utah scored more points
that'll do it for the single game raw plus-minus. Aldridge isn't shooting 70% on the season.

Plus-minus rating is the 82games on court/off court Roland Rating. Aldridge can score, but it's pretty clear he isn't very good at other things, and that's why he's not helping his team.

by JSlakov on Jan 1, 2008 1:57 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not making this up
Aldridge doesn't rebound or defend well, and it's pretty important to have a pf/c who can rebound and defend well. The points are nice, but thanks to plus-minus, we know Aldridge isn't as effective as Thomas.

It's because +/- measures team performance
when a player is on versus off court.  It's not a reflection of the individual players' stats.  That's why BG can end up with a -4 for yesterday's game in spite of his 39 points, while Ben Wallace was a +3.

Happy New Year fellow blogabullers!!!
I was at the game.  Tremendous amount of energy in the crowd.

1- This was a well played game for both teams.
2- Kirk stays in the game we win.  He is playing well.  His defense was excellent.  He had 10 assists and one turnover.  Let's hope we continue to see the upside of his game.  The team had 12 turnovers the whole game.
3- Du was awful.  He had a chance to ice the game with a wide open three and missed.
4- Ben Gordon was great except for the late turnover.  I don't understand it but he is a different player coming off the bench.  That last three he was unconscious.  Orlando was all over him.  He is fearless when taking the big shot.  The rest of our guys seem to run away from the ball.
5- Orlando was 11-25 for 3's.  If they aren't this hot we win the game despite everything written above
6- I do not know what happened on Nelson's drive.  In general I thought our defense was good.  Again, if they weren't hitting threes we win easily.
7- Noah was going crazy on the bench rooting for the Bulls.  You cannot complain about his energy.
8- Ben Wallace tried but he has so many deficiencies that I keep wishing for Chandler.  I need to get over this.  He did contain Howard's scoring.  He also go a number of key tips resulting in offensive rebounds.  BW is a liability in too many areas but when he decides to bring it he does an adequate job of defending.

We are not a championship contender this year but I am not giving up on this team.  Ben Gordon has the potential to be amazing.  Deng was solid and played good D on Turkoglu.  Our glaring weaknesses are as we all know, continue to be, a long, decent 2 guard and an inside presence. This was a game we played well, you felt we were in and easily could have won.

I was also at the game
I thought it was a great game.  I also thought that most of the team played well, with Wallace being a huge exception.  He has ZERO offensive skills and is not the defensive force that people are lauding.

Dwight Howard went for 17 and 22, so please let me know how Ben did a good job on D.  Part of your defensive assignment is to keep your man off the glass and Howard was getting rebounds at will.  I understand that Howard is an awesome player, but Wallace did little to stop him from dominating.

On offense, things grind to a complete halt when Wallace gets the ball.  He is completely immobile, so a pass to him requires players to come get the ball from him if he does not immediately identify an open player to pass to upon his receipt of the ball.  When he is open under the basket, he kicks it out because he is scared to shoot.  When he does shoot, he misses.

People have said it before, but the Bulls really do play 4 on 5 on the offensive end.  He was 1 of 6, and at least 4 of those shots were completely makable.

In what universe is 2 points on 16% shooting and 12 rebounds in almost 46 minutes acceptable numbers?!  Think about this: if Wallace shoots 33% (which is also a bad percentage) the Bulls win!

I understand that people want to justify lighting $15 million a year on fire to feel better about themselves, but the numbers do not lie.  I just do not see how the Bulls can win with this guy on the floor.  When he wants to play (which is not every night) his defense is good to very good, but rarely exceptional.  That defensive effort does not come close to making up for his deficient offense.

On the coaching side, I did not understand why they didn't play Smith more since he was really productive.  Similarly, Tyrus came in and had 2 points, 2 boards and a block in 5 and a half minutes.  I thought that his performance merited more time.  These guys should get minutes at the expense of Wallace as each can contribute points and play at least adequate defense.

Finally, Duhon is garbage and should not be on the floor if he can't hit open looks and free throws.
