Open Game Thread #15: Bulls vs Dallas Mavericks

I enjoyed Sam Smith's (other) work today picking out Mavs quotes and suggesting how Bulls-like they sounded. A Dallas Morning News blogger was less than enthused:

Smith shreds his credibility when he writes that Jerry Stackhouse "has been yanked around from starter to the bench." I assume he's referring to the same Stack who finished third in the Sixth Man Award voting the last two seasons and fourth the previous year.

Good point(?), but this season the Mavericks did try to move Stackhouse to the starting lineup for a handful of games displacing their version of Ben Gordon, Jason Terry, to the bench. I don't know how that experiment went, but I'll guess whatever advantages they gained by having the coveted 'big guard' were probably outweighed by Stack's 10.91 PER so far this season, and now Terry's back in the starting lineup with Devin Harris.

On the subject of the height disadvantage that makes everyone so sad, the Mavericks have a tall frontcourt rotation with Dirk, Dampier, and DeSagana. In their first meeting last season, the huge Dampier completely overwhelmed Ben Wallace. Lets hope Ben doesn't go into his shell after such a fantastic outing on Saturday. (How did he do that against Okafor and Brezec?!? They're taller than him!!). I wouldn't be surprised if they started Deng on Nowitzki to keep Tyrus out of early foul trouble, but a combination of Deng, Thomas, and Noah over the course of the game works for me. Nocioni, not so much.

Hopefully two wins worked out whatever horsecrap excuse they had for a horsecrap start to the season. It's not likely they'll beat the Mavs, but if they get blown the hell out at home it'll be a bad bad sign.

Not likely?
If the Bulls continue to play like they have recently and the Mavs continue their recent woes, I see it as 50/50

by Option27 on Dec 3, 2007 6:40 PM CST reply actions

Yeah, let's have some optimism!
Mavs are 2-4 over their last 6, beating only Minnesota and Portland at home, while losing to Indiana, Milwaukee, Washington and New Orleans.  Sounds roughly the same as the Bulls record over past 6.  Sam did do pretty well with that comparison, no?

I just can't go into a game without believing the Bulls will win, no matter how ridiculous the season so far makes that sound!

This is an important test
I've been eying this game since we beat Atlanta.  I expect Dallas to be motivated after losing to New Orleans.  We have lost games we should have won.  This is a game we are expected to lose.  I'd love us to win it.

But I don't have the bandwidth for anything better than audio - and since I'm in the "Dallas viewing area" or whatever they call it, I'm blacked out on League Pass tonight.  Which is weird since it's suppose to be NBATV.

I don't know of a more in-synch broadcast though

Scouting the Mavs
I saw the Mavs play the Pacers the Friday after Thanksgiving and I was pretty unimpressed.  They looked like they were sleeping on the Pacers the first three quarters and didn't play hard at all.  They stepped it up in the 4th but the Pacers hung right with them and pulled it out.  The Mavs may have set some kind of record for crying about almost every play (although in fairness Avery Johnson got ejected for a pretty valid point because it appeared to me Mike Dunleavy basically slugged someone- Jason Terry, I think - in the face to prevent a breakaway.  Dirk and Troy Murphy almost got in a fistfight, which was worth the price of admission (free tickets). It was all in all a pretty entertaining second half.

I also remember reading about how Brandon Bass and Tyrus used to work out together and Tyrus never once beat Bass. That's not very encouraging since Bass has taken 3 years to become a mediocrity.

Anyway, the lessons I came away with the game for the Bulls were that Nowitski really struggles with tall, strong and quick guys and Jeff Foster, who is tall, strong and quick is very overlooked as a player.  Unfortunately, we don't really a comparable player.  Their guards aren't all that great and if you can keep Howard and Terry under control you've got a pretty good shot at them even if Dirk gets his.

Looking at how things have unfolded though, not much of that matters.  Howard has had his way on both ends of the court and although we haven't played awful defense or anything we've once again shot the ball like crap.

by Sports2 on Dec 3, 2007 9:22 PM CST reply actions

If tyrus had a jumpshot it woud be different
Bass is bigger so down low vs down low, I see him winning.

does Wallace have over 40 minutes playing time with 4points 6rebs?  What's the point?  He is useless if he doesn't grab at least 10 rebounds; especially with the rest of the offense as stagnant as it is.  I don't get it!

Moral victories suck, but I suppose I do feel better about making the game competitive at the end than I would have watching the guys fold and get blown out.  But given how crappy they played the first half (excepting Noc and Du), it really is incredible it ended up being a game at all.

Wallace played all 48 minutes?  Hope he's got something left for later this week.
