Open Game Thread #26: Bulls at San Antonio Spurs
I doubt we'll see any big-time coaching philosophy changes from 'interim-interim' head coach Pete Myers tonight.
In fact, it makes more sense to me to do nothing than sitting Ben Gordon, or going further, starting a lineup of Hinrich/Deng/Griffin/Smith/Wallace. Yipes. (in fairness, the rest of that article has good ideas)
But what will I be looking for tonight? Just hoping that Tyrus and Noah get plenty of burn, pretty much. And to a lesser extent, Sefolosha and Gray. As far as the major concerns, such as the continued crapiness of Hinrich, Gordon, and Wallace(speaking of, Hanley refutes the 'Skiles quit on us' quote from Wallace), and random dissapearances of Deng for that matter, maybe the weight has been lifted off their shoulders and they can perform. I don't think that's what will be the actual reason for an in-season turnaround, but if they believe that's the reason, that's good enough.
Meanwhile, here's some background on likely future 'interim' coach, Jim Boylan. Knowing absolutely nothing about his coaching style, he seems as good of a hire as any, and far better than some of the suggestions around here, since he's at least paid his dues as an assistant in the professional ranks. And even if this chance is just to be a Paxson puppet, that can serve him in the future.
Manu is out for the Spurs. Which is great news not just for the Bulls chances, but limiting the comments suggesting why the Spurs can sit Manu but the Bulls can't sit Gordon.

Whoo!
yo just testin
Sam Smith looks like an eccentric
Wash your hair, man.
It's interesting that Smith continually contends that Skiles was fired, in part, because he candidly told Paxson that the team didn't have the talent to be a serious title contender.
I like Meyers' notion of
The team looks to be pushing the pace thus far.
What a surprise...
Ghost of Skiles....
even the same starting lineup as Skiles....
sigh...
And Griffin second!
unfortunately?
Du playing pretty well thus far.
Yeah, uh, AG needs to go ahead and sit down.
i just threw up in my mouth ...

Looks
F - in HICK spurts commentators...
Ummm...I disagree
2 words
Bulls played good defense that
Gordon still can't his head out of his ass and avoid needless early fouls.
Lu looked good, as did Smith.
yo we need to fire Pete Myers
My god, he comes in and on 3 straight posessions he uses up twelve seconds of clock each time. Luckily one of those resulted in a Duh bail-out 3-pointer.
And Noc had his fire&passion drives blocked twice already.
ugh ugh ugh.
by your friendly BullsBlogger on Dec 26, 2007 8:13 PM CST reply actions
this "interim" situation will be uglier
If I were Myers I would have started something completely different....course, that could just be Pax pulling Pete's strings...
thats what i'm saying!
And they need to get griffin the F outta there!
uh, vet leadership

Myers
I wonder if Myers is just giving someone the finger.
Duhon is playing much better then Kirk so far
This lineup will end the game.
TT must do a better job fighting through screens
He let Bonner elude him and he made similar mistakes repeatedly against Posey a few nights back.
A scary thought:
it is crap

Skiles
I'd be laughing with him
So AMF to him.
Unbelievable
All three of the core players
And they are the ones that got blown off the court.
Hinrich got abused by Parker. Gordon was racing around on defense getting juked by shot fakes.
The Core is being further embarrassed as I type.
I'm actually happy
Kirk Hinrich makes more money than Tony Parker
Tony Parker
by RogersPark Kris on Dec 26, 2007 8:30 PM CST reply actions
Parker is dominating this game.
(Yes, I realize Parker is the reigning NBA Finals MVP, but the vast gulf between his play and our guards thus far is breathtaking.)

Of all the things that people complained about, Skiles' refusal to play and develop Tyrus was a legitimate complaint. Well, it needs to change. Soon.
Hey, we're still in the game.
Calm down guys
And we play against best team in the league.
Should we start fire Griffin campaign?

Pete Myers = Stacey King?

Bulls report card.
Kirk Hinrich D-
Terrible defense on Tony Parker. Tony is a future Hall of famer, but his scoring burst put the Bulls in a hole where they never recovered from. Offensively a non-factor.
Ben Gordon C
Showed signs of offensive life, but wasn't able to sustain his momentum.
Luol Deng C-
Missed a lot of close shots and disappeared when they needed him most.
Ben Wallace C
Played pretty good defense on Duncan.
Joe Smith C
Showed some offensive life but ran out of gas.
Nocioni D-
Chucked till he could chuck no more, unfortunately ice cold.
Duhon C
Played alright, can't fault him for being forced to play with AG.
Noah/Thomas/Thabo ND
So the Bulls played their starters pretty much the entire game so they can remain competitive yet still got blown out? Isn't this why Skiles got fired?
by RogersPark Kris on Dec 26, 2007 9:45 PM CST reply actions
I agree with your grades.
Luol really disappeared in the 2nd half.
Hinrich was below average on both ends.
I thought Wallace played great interior D.
Noce was a nightmare.
Noah was a flickering mirage. In the game for a minute, then gone.
Tyrus rode the pine...again.
Why fire Skiles?

TT, Noah, Tyson, Curry, etc
I believe this duty has been Boylan's responsible. And the organization's half hearted attempt to get P.J Brown, and Ben Wallace, Joe Smith to help teach the young guys to take over their minutes in the rotation.
If Paxson doesn't give Boylan his pink slip today, then Paxson should give himelf "his" at the end of the season.
Ron Adams
But, if we still go alone with your premise, it furthermore validates a half hearted approach to delegating development of Big Men otherside of Skiles trusted coach circle.
On second thought.. how can either Adams or Boylan teach NBA Bigs the NBA game?
Is Wallace or Smith really going to teach someone to take over their position?
Nothing's going to be different
Obviously, when Tyrus, or Noah, or Thabo plays the right way, they are effective and even game changers. But until they decide to play that way the majority of the time, more minutes isn't going to translate into wins.
screw play the right way
And I disagree that if they don't play right it won't translate into wins. Tyrus and Noah are effective when they play, give them more rope to prove they can sustain it, not less.
I want a team that's good enough to where they can 'screw off' and win, to be honest.
by your friendly BullsBlogger on Dec 26, 2007 11:09 PM CST up reply actions
and...
The 'running the court' thing is overblown. No player runs all the time. I supposed if he knows he'll only be in a few posessions he should. And even if he slacks on a majority of the opportunities, the good outweigh the bad. I don't see more minutes as a reward for the bad things, but for the good things. So the message to the team can be 'play good and you'll play'. What a concept.

Popovich OWNED Myers tonight ...
The Spurs JV team (when both Parker and Duncan weren't on the floor) took the lead at the beginning of the 2nd quarter and never let us get closer. Duncan had an off night, so Pop pulled him with no hesitation.
Players have off nights. Noc had an off night ... so pull him before he does more damage. Hinrich had that low-confidence level stretch again ... so pull him and play Duhon, who was playing well and should've gotten a chance to defend Parker. What was Griffin doing in a close game early ... there has to be a better combination possible when Hinrich/Gordon have to sit. And does the coaching staff know that Joe Smith loses his legs if he stays in too long?
Of course hindsight is 20/20, but aren't some of those things pretty obvious to anyone following the Bulls? It's not Pete's fault that he was thrown into this, but you have to wonder if there is anyone out there who can coach our players.
