Open Game Thread #25: Bulls vs. Houston Rockets

[Thanks to chgobr for today's game thread. -Matt]

Houston is also trying to figure out what to do to salvage their season.  They have lost three straight and five out of six.  Their disappointment is based on being 12-14 in the West compared to the Bulls 9-15. They look to the Bulls for their cure. Houston has won eight of the last nine against the Bulls and beat the Bulls the last four years at the UC.

Houston's last game was a heart-breaking 112-111 loss to Denver.  They played without Tracy McGrady and unlike the Bulls worked their tails off to just fall short.  I watched the end of that game and if they play with that intensity they will be hard for us to beat even without TMac.  Tracy McGrady is questionable for the game tonight.  Yao has been a monster on the boards grabbing 19 rebounds in the last game against Denver.  Stevie Franchise is back and should get some minutes particularly if TMac cannot play.  Bonzi Wells is alive and probably still not all there in the head but is actually playing pretty well recently.

Should they trade Yao or Tracy McGrady, Houston Chronicle?  Magic Johnson clearly thinks they should -

"It's not working out," Johnson said during halftime of the Rockets' 112-111 double-overtime loss at Denver on Thursday. "We've seen it for all these years; they get eliminated from the first round. I thought they were going to play well together, but it's not working. One of them has to go because it's not working."

I suggest reading The DreamShake to feel the Houston fan's pain.

I'm about to write something that I don't believe I've said out loud more than 2-3 times in my lifetime: The Rockets suck. ....

What's worse is that I think they may actually be better WITHOUT Tracy McGrady for the first time since he's been here. He's acting like a baby on the court and not playing within the system. Why isn't he? Because the system won't net him 28PPG on 37% shooting, that's the best I can garner. TMac wants to shoot the ball repeatedly whenever he feels like it. ....

The Houston Chronicle today considers tonight game their chance to get back on the right path

....  though catching the Bulls, who were whipped by Boston on Friday, tonight on Game 2 of a back-to-back with McGrady possibly returning to the lineup is a good thing.

Our angst is well documented in the over 300 entries in last night's game diary.  If you are looking for further confirmation that this season is going down the toilet check out Sam Smith.  Matt believes those of us hoping for an Aaron Gray miracle solution to our low post problems is emblematic of how pathetic the Bulls have become.  I am amazed at the fine line between winning and losing.  This is the same team that looked so good last year.  Beside Aaron Gray providing a low post balance, I am out of suggestions and growing weary of our horrible play and losing.

I got my
Game Notes email this morning for the game tonight. It has Gray as a probable starter. Maybe BB just needs to do whatever it takes to get his feet healed. He certainly isn't helping this team trying to play injured. But then what is the excuse for the rest of the team?

I hope TT does not try to bring the ball down court again. In the fourth he turned it over twice coming down the floor. The taunting was plain childish.

Maybe they will play like a team who wants to win tonight.....and maybe not. :-(

Please get this season turned around and play some great basketball.

As much as I've railed on Gray....
...I'd rather have him than Wallace and Smith right now. I don't want him seeing 30 minutes, but 20 a game would be nice. I'm just worried that when Wallace comes back, Gray will continue to get his minutes while Thomas and Noah go back to alternating 15 minute games.

Early on, the biggest problem with the team
was that nobody could hit a shot.  I'm not sure, but I'm beginning to think that even though they're beginning to hit a few more of their shots, they're actually in worse shape now.  Why?  In the beginning of the season, at least they knew what sort of a team they were supposed to be--a jump-shooting, fast-breaking, motion offense.

Now? Everyone said it last night.  We saw it in the thread.  The game announcers mentioned it.  Even Skiles in his post game said it.  The team looks confused--like they have lost their identity.  And there's nothing worse than getting thrown into a situation, any situation, not knowing what you're supposed to do.  Do they throw it into the post?  Pass it around the perimeter?  Take the first open shot?  Wait for the big guy to find his space down low?

The team has totally lost its identity.  Blame it on Aaron Gray if you want.  The fact that he's about the only one playing well, coupled with the fact that his game is completely limited and defined (there is no confusion in Gray's head about what he can or can't do) has created a team paradox.

New coaching, starting over again, may be the only way out of this box.  What's interesting to me is that I'm sure Skiles could coach a low-post offense--it seems right up his alley--but he's spent so much time creating "no-center" compensatory offensive schemes, that he may not have the credibility with his players to go all the way back to the beginning and install a new team identity from scratch.

by alec on Dec 22, 2007 12:01 PM CST   0 recs

Hah! Not quite.
His two or three "good" games has hardly overidden his countless poop minutes he's had. That said, R.O.Y. is a popularity contest, and even though Noah was leading the Blog-a-Bull MVP vote just a week ago, he's quickly soured.

by hscs on Dec 22, 2007 1:57 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

You're right, it is
by and large a popularity contest (although they do seem to get it right more often than not), and that's why (maybe half-seriously) I think Gray has a shot.

It could be the perfect storm setting up for him.  Because of the high preseason speculation, the Bulls got scheduled for a lot of national exposure.  What was it Hubie Brown said last night?  "The Celtics don't have an answer for Gray!"

If the Bulls were performing up to expectations, Hubie might not even have seen Gray.  But now that the team sucks so badly, Gray will likely be the centerpiece and only positive talking point every time they get on national TV.

Obviously, he's got a long way to go to catch up to the performances of Horford, or the hype of Durant, but Gray will likely have the edge in exposure on both those guys.

What a joke!

by alec on Dec 22, 2007 1:14 PM CST   0 recs

Skiles' reason they didn't win?
They didn't try hard enough! More grit! More scrap! More grrrrrrrr... And maybe they win the game. Here all along I was thinking it was just because they sucked last night.

Sure it's game 2 of a back to back
but it's not that fortunate for Houston.. after all, our starters are rested after the blowout. :-P  If our starters play any good tonight after the fact, is what we'll have to see, though.

It's true...
we can't stop the guy with the shrimps we have guarding him.  Last season the 3 guard lineup blew it - can't have 3 guys under 6'3 on the floor.  Having Hinrich guard him is an embarassment.

by Jaina on Dec 22, 2007 3:36 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

I saw the Seattle game last year in Seattle
I finally realized during that game how detrimental Gordon was to the Bulls effort.  Hinrich chased Allen all over the floor on defense and then had to give maximum effort as the point on offense.  Every night he has to guard the opponent's best guard.  He never gets a night off.  And against a team like NJ with two above average guards, the effect is devistating.  No wonder we never beat NJ.  We have got to fix our hugh hole on defense at SG.

I wish more people remember this ...
... before they rip on Kirk. You're right on. Although a lot of his turnovers are inexcusable (especially late in a tight game), sometimes you gotta cut this guy some slack overall. Problem is with the way we're playing as a team, we can't afford to ...

by Orange Juice on Dec 22, 2007 4:52 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

cut kirk some slack
Why? He's a lottery pick also. The drive in his game has vanished. He never was a finisher but at least he would cut through the d. Now his handle looks very average. Hinrich crosses over to take a jumpshot. Watch closely and you'll see that his game has regressed. He deserves the blame. Isn't the captain supposed to take it on his shoulders.

by Blacknight23 on Dec 22, 2007 6:37 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

I concur
Youtube is filled with images of kirk speeding through lanes. He was the hardest worker on teh bulls and it showed. I mean at times he seemed like the fastest guy on the court. Theres actually a nice video that shows him streaking all the way down the court and laying it by himself, after someone scored a basket. I mean litterly, the ball got thrown into him and he just ran past the other team before they got set on defense and layed it in...I miss the hinrich that was gonna be the next steve nash/john stockton...sniff...

Looks like Noch
is starting tonight again. Why doesn't Skiles start TT instead? Noch sucks when he starts. Some where between starting and coming off the bench he loses that spark and shooting touch.

I hope Kirk plays better than what the neighbors dog dropped in our yard today.

Luther Head!
As an Illini Alum, I would love to see Head start tonight as he did last night. It would be cool for his family and his Illini fans to see him start.

I always wish him the best, but I think it'll benefit the Bulls if he starts and plays a lot of minutes ... Hinrich needs to get back on track after a poor game. Hopefully T-Mac sits out one more game; even though he's hurt and struggling, it's better for Hinrich (or Deng) to not have to exhaust energy guarding a 6-8 swingman.

I better not see Hinrich closing out late on Head at the three-point line ... KYP Kirk, make him drive!!!

by Orange Juice on Dec 22, 2007 4:32 PM CST   0 recs

So I have a Grayt Theory.
What is Joakim Noah known for? More specifically, what is probably the biggest reason that Skiles and Paxson drafted him?

How about... he makes his teammates better--or even more specifically, gets his teammates energized and pumped up.

What's Tyrus Thomas' biggest problem right now according to Skiles? He doesn't hustle.

Here's the theory: PLAY NOAH AND THOMAS TOGETHER YOU DUMBASS!!!!!!!

Not only are they both two really good complementary players (to the backcourt, for now) with very good to great potential, but it seems as though a HUGE problem could be solved.

The very fact that Skiles can't see that his own cliches could solve his problems just go to show how dim-witted, or pig-headed, he is.

The Playoffs
Are a new season, i honestly believe that. Take dallas from last year, the year when dirk was mvp, and dallas was (not) going to break the 70 wins barrier. Then they got thier asses handed to them by the warriors. In the Playoffs, a team like cleveland can rely on one player and somehow get to the nba finals. In the playoffs the bulls have a chance to redeem themselves for such a sucky season. I honestly believe this....

I am sick of this
We have too many peopl who do the same thing, Noah, TT and Wallace.
This team is a bunch of lottery picks who are going nowhere. Gordon #3, Hinrich #7, Noah #9, Thomas #4. I love Thomas but we should have kept Aldridge because he can score in the post. I think we need to blow this up and trade for Gasol or someone who can help. Offer Noch, Noah and someone else to Memphis. We could have a lineup of Gasol, Wallace, Deng, Gordon and Hinrich unless we have to give the Kirk in the trade. We would have someone who demands a double team, Gordon would be open when they collapse on Gasol and we would have TT and Duhon off the bench along with Smith as well. I am going to do a post like this on my blog check it out http://playahatersblog.blogspot.com

Fire Skiles*
It's one thing to lose because you're not hitting shots, but when you get killed on the offensive glass like the Bulls did tonight, that's just lack of effort and poor coaching (in having such a poor rebounding lineup on the court).  It would be one thing if it was 7-6 Yao Ming getting offensive rebound after offensive rebound, but it wasn't; it was Luis Scola and Chuck Hayes.  Of course, it sure didn't help that one of the Bulls' best rebounders in Tyrus Thomas was on the bench, while the immobile Aaron Gray was getting beat to loose ball after loose ball.  How many wide open layups did the Rockets get in the second half?  Guess what, that's what happens when you have a center who's too slow to get back into the lane.

The team is clearly going nowhere.  It's time to play the younger players like Thomas, Noah, and Thabo and see what we have.  If the Bulls are ever going to compete with Boston and Detroit (let alone the good teams in the West), they're going to need those players to reach their full potential.  Skiles obviously is either unwilling or incapable of doing that, so get a coach in here who can.

* OK, wait until after the San Antonio game.  It's not nice to fire somebody right before Christmas, and it wouldn't really be fair to the new coach to have his first game be at San Antonio.

Holy Christ, this team is the brown stain at the bottom of the single working toilet in a public bathroom in a CTA station.

Trade Hinrich and Gordon. They are shit. They are overmatched physically every time they take the floor. Turnover prone midgets.

Noce played like a blind crack addict with epilepsy.

Wallace is legitimate nightmare. Useless. How many offensive rebounds did we yield tonight?

Tyrus is a ghost.

Gray is a lumbering troll.

Noah is a goofy tard.

I don't even know what to say, really. Losing game after game by twenty or thirty points is unacceptable.

Maybe they turn it around, but I don't know how.

20 offensive boards given up
Including a couple times when the Rockets got 3 offensive rebounds in one trip.  And the rest of your analysis is accurate as well.

Noah is the one guy that had at least shown flashes, and he got his own ass handed to him tonight by Chuck Hayes and Luis Scola.

No easy answers.  I guess their best hope is to make some trades for whatever they can get, at least to shed salary and pick up extra draft picks.

That's almost as bad as the Ben Wallace-for-Pau Gasol trade somebody suggested on here last week.  Wallace is virtually untradeable at this point.  I say "virtually" untradeable because I'm pretty sure Isiah Thomas would be willing to trade Stephon Marbury for him.  Other than that, though, good luck.

Team Nowhere
I really think that this is what the bulls should be called from here on.  I dont think they will stay this bad this season and i do think they will pick up and make the playoffs for this year again but beyond that i dont see us doing much more than getting out of the first round. When i watch these games i dont know what to think.  I am sort of happy gordon and deng did not accept the extensions because i dont think we can go anywhere with the both of them on this team.  Gordon has to go because of two reasons.  the first being gordon cannot cover anyone and even when i see him play defense i feel like i am about to smack him because it is as if he is just going through the motions when in reality he is thinking i hope i am hot tonight for my max contract next year.  second he is such a liablity with his one dimensional game.  He is off and on so much that the bulls have no idea what to do when he is off.  And he is a big reason that hinrich is off because hinrich always take the bigger scoring gaurd.

Wallace was such a mistake.  I do believe he was a big reason for sweeping miami but at the same time he is just about that i mean showing up for a few games and then disapearing for the next week or so.  tyson would not have been any different here because he was really in skiles doghouse.  I am happy he is playing good for another team.

Skiles really has to develop the young talent with a more consistent approach.  I still dont get why kryapa does not play at all.  We let go of lamarcus to get two good players and one never gets off the bench and the other is on such a short leash that he gets no playing time.

Skiles theory that if you play good in practice you play in games is king of lopsided.  Playing in practice can in no way be compared to playing in a regular game.

Hinrich should start playing like a point gaurd should and that is hook up his teammates more.  If he can average about eight assists and 14 points with less than 4 turnovers a game i would be happy and i think the bulls would do alot better and there would be more movement and spacing.
Another thing what the F&*k is up with all of this dribbling.  All they do is dribble till eight seconds and then dump of the ball to someone.

Where is the defense?

The point of all of this is that we are at best a good regular season team with a maybe a semi decent run in the playoffs with nothing else.

We have to trade for someone else.
