Open Game Thread #5: Bulls vs. Detroit Pistons

[Thanks to prashantrao for tonight's game preview. Our first look at the Pistons since that woeful playoff series should be a good one. Here's hoping the Bulls can finally put one in the win column. -Mike]

Just when it seemed like us Bulls fans could be reasonably certain of the team this year putting together a strong season, contending for the conference title and basically just improving on last season, we've been subjected to the 0-4 start.

Despite that, I'm not too down -- there are several past examples of teams (not just the Bulls) starting slowly and putting together good seasons. The most recent example, of course, is the 2006-07 Dallas Mavericks.

Now, say what you want about the Mavs last season, but they did win 67 wins, run away with the tougher conference and were among the favourites to win the NBA Championship -- until the debacle against the Warriors. The thing about that 67-win season, though, is the Mavericks started 0-4, albeit against a tougher schedule than the Bulls have had so far (San Antonio, @Houston, Golden State, @LA Clippers). Among those four season-opening losses was a 31-point loss in Houston, and an 18-point loss to the Clippers, all after the disastrous 2006 NBA Finals.

Other notable relatively recent examples include:

  • The 1996-97 Phoenix Suns started 0-13 and finished the season 40-42, good for the 7th spot in the West Playoffs.
  • The 1995-96 Cleveland Cavaliers started 0-7 and finished the season 47-35, earning them the 5th seed in the East.
  • Of course, as we all know, the 2004-05 Bulls started 0-9 and finished 47-35, good for 5th in the East.
Even last season's Bulls team started 3-9.

My point? It's a long season, and bad starts can be overcome. There's little evidence to show that this particular Bulls team is one made up of players with fragile confidence, so tonight against Detroit could just be the start of a very good season.

Ben Wallace had better get well quick! Or else
let the other bigs play!

On its ChicagoSports.com website the Tribune ran a poll asking what was wrong with the Bulls.  But apparently they didn't offer "Ben Wallace is hurt" as an option!

http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/basketball/bulls/

This would be a tough game even if everything were clicking, of course.  But I can't stand to see Wallace out there playing badly.  I would rather see a rookie get experience in a loss while Wallace heals.

Since I can't watch tonight we will probably win.
I won't be seeing the game tonight (don't get TNT) so we are sure to win. I missed last season Bulls vs Heat opener and we won that and Detroit is our Miami this year.  Lets hope we have enough pent up fire power after the playoff loss against them to break the slump.

by cranscape on Nov 8, 2007 3:47 PM CST reply actions

My sanity is being tested tonight
After suffering through torture known as the first four games of the Bulls season, I am worn down, my nerves are freyed, I feel I'm close to slipping into a depressive black hole I will not be able to get out.  Tonight's game appears to me to be like more water buckets being poured over my head that is covered by a sack.  Detroit has that knack of being a great finishing team.  Will the Bulls be up by ten going into the 4th and Detroit picks them apart and we lose by one.  Oh for the love of God don't let that happen.

by chgobr on Nov 8, 2007 4:00 PM CST reply actions

It has been rough.
This is the first year I've really talked up the Bulls to coworkers and friends.  I had high expectations that we'd not make the same mistakes of the last few seasons and everything pointed to that.  I still have expectations, but I am also fighting the panic of turning my Bulls shirt inside out pretending I never said anything about how basketball was fun again.  It would be one thing if they were losing despite putting up a hard effort and showing some fire, but I've not seen that yet.    Hopefully they bring their A game tonight and smile a bit and show they still love to play.

by cranscape on Nov 8, 2007 4:15 PM CST up reply actions

Again, Wallace is playing injured.
If we lost Luol Deng for four games would you be surprised if we lost?  If Wallace were even half his old self we would have won at least two games.  And he played okay in the preseason.  So just chalk this one up to an injury to one of two best players, and let's hope he gets better.

My Keys to Victory
  1. Get Tyrus going early
  2. Attack on O
  3. DEFENSIVE REBOUNDING!!!!!!!!!

Crazy Talk
What are anyone thoughts of starting Gordon defensivly on SG's.  I say give him a chance!!  It can't get much worse...Guards are already shooting over Kirk anyway, might see what Kirk can do to slow down PG's.  I know it doesn't seem like a good idea but you never know...

by tyrus4prez on Nov 8, 2007 4:28 PM CST reply actions

Gordon
For all BG's mistakes with turnovers etc, he did come up with that huge steal on Chauncey last night.

It's still frustrating that the Bulls can't close out games, but thank God we pulled that one off.  It's very irritating seeing our plays in the 4th (Give the ball to Gordon and have 4 guys stand around waiting for Gordon to miraculously hit some shots)....

But right now, I don't know which is more depressing -
Knowing that da Bulls are tied for last in the league, or knowing the pissed-ons are going to kick their respective arses tonight...
...(sigh)...

Man...being a Chicago sports fan these days really SUCKETH.

The Blackhawks have some young talent.
They're a long way from contending, but the future looks bright.

And the same is true, right now, for the Bulls, even if Wallace never returns to form.  Except that he will return to form, and the Bulls will get better, much better.

by Tim S. on Nov 8, 2007 4:52 PM CST up reply actions

It will come down to the guards tonight
If Hinrich and Gordon get abused by Billups and Hamilton like they did in the playoffs, the Bulls can't win.  You'd have to think they're due for a big game, though.

Handily.

This is the first night that I can actually use my season tickets and my date is The Charm. She has only seen the Bulls lose once or twice since the start of 2003. Every time she goes to a game, the Bulls seem to play well.

I have a good feeling about the Bulls today. Just hope we don't shoot an embarrassment like we did the last few games. Another one and I think Skiles is gonna have a heart attack.

The only thing I'm not looking forward to tonight
is listening to Barkley ramble on about why-ever he dislikes the Bulls this season.  Tonight's the night that Lu, BG and Kirk all have it going at the same time, and hopefully Skiles feels so bad about forgetting Ty on the bench that he gets a ton of minutes.

Who cares what Barkley says, Tyrus is actually a much improved jump shooter. My only problem with TT is that sometimes he makes some bonehead decisions. No Biggie. Good things happen the more he's on the floor. Looks like Skiles finally figured it out!

His box score stats were the best of his season,
though, in limited minutes.  And note that Thomas's plus/minus was the second worst at -2, yet his box score stats were amazing.

Plus/minus stats are interesting, but I'm not convinced that you should look at those alone to judge performance and ignore box score stats.

by Tim S. on Nov 9, 2007 7:21 AM CST up reply actions

Our bench was great tonight. We also were able to
play our bench guys 76 minutes whereas Detroit only played theirs for 50.

by philosoball on Nov 8, 2007 10:10 PM CST reply actions

Every time Skiles talks
about TT he makes a comment about Thomas running out of gas after "x" number of minutes.  What's that about?  Does Tyrus tire extra quickly?  Is he hyperventilating out there?  Will somebody explain this?

by alec on Nov 8, 2007 10:12 PM CST reply actions

Well, I would guess it's tiring carrying the Bulls
as Tyrus did tonight, shouldering the scoring load and rebounding, while guarding the other teams best player(tonight).

by philosoball on Nov 8, 2007 10:15 PM CST up reply actions

seriously,
I feel like I've heard Skiles make the same comment about Thomas dozens of times.  What's going on with this?  I assume it's true.  I'm wondering why.

by alec on Nov 8, 2007 10:21 PM CST up reply actions

Tyrus has had a tendency to
get gassed dating back to at least college.  He's probably never been at the conditioning level he needs to be at in his life, yet.  He'll get there unless there is some medical issue holding him back.  But he seemed fine tonight in 36 minutes.  Skiles didn't over extend him in the 1st half.

by Scotter on Nov 8, 2007 10:25 PM CST up reply actions

So if it's
conditioning, Skiles comments are just a subtle way of saying Thomas doesn't push himself hard enough to get in shape?

by alec on Nov 8, 2007 10:27 PM CST up reply actions

I think one of the biggest
improvements I see from Thomas is that he's staying away from foul trouble much better than last year.  I thought he contested Wallace's shots pretty well.  I think it's real easy to get in foul trouble contesting a big guy who shoots a lot in the post.

nice win
This would have been a blowout though if the bulls could hit more open shots and get there 3 pt shooting groove back on.  It's nice to see the team not live and die by the jump shot.  Thomas, Deng and even noah impressed  me.  Noah is a good passer and has good court awareness.  Once him and Noah stop making bonehead decisions, like tyrus trying to run the fastbreak in traffic), theyll be a nice little tandem.

by Sambossanova on Nov 8, 2007 10:49 PM CST reply actions

by philosoball on Nov 8, 2007 10:50 PM CST reply actions

From my seats, Tyrus
looked like the best Bulls player in the gym tonight.

And it really wasn't close.

Among other things, Tyrus is a developing a really nice ability to drive to the hole. And he is avoiding foul trouble as well. And he is playing under control. And his passing is even improving. And...etc., etc., etc.

Rasheed was awesome, but Tyrus finlly coaxed a few misses out of him on the last few possessions.

Rip Hamilton needs to have his throat kicked in for that bush league trip.

If the guards play with some modicum of offensive consistency this season, the team can be pretty good.

Draft 2006
Selected forward LaMarcus Aldridge (2nd overall pick) and guard Rodney Carney (16th overall pick).
Traded the draft rights to forward LaMarcus Aldridge and a future second-round pick to the Portland Trail Blazers for forward Viktor Khryapa and the draft rights to forward Tyrus Thomas; traded the draft rights to guard Rodney Carney to the Philadelphia 76ers for the draft rights to guard Thabo Sefolosha.

Now I "get" the 'Khyrapa Sightings' joke. That goofy lanky eastern european.. I thought we might taken him him out of the d-league. The Great white hope, anybody? I don't see a whole lot of positive speculation about this guy.

game last night. Hope this is the beginning of their season.

TT was fantastic. We've not seen the best of him yet. He will just get better each game and that is very exciting.

Very nice to see Kirk play better. He looked much more relaxed last night.

I thought Skiles did the right thing putting Du in at the end for his defense. It worked and that's all that matters.

Joe Smith was a great signing for this team. I love what he has brought to this team.

I love Joakim too. He will only get better.

Hope they carry this momentum into tomorrow nights game. The Bulls played last night like I thought they would this year. Keep it going guys.

good game
last night.  I was at the game, and like everyone has already mentioned, TT looked great.  Joe Smith needs to get some props though, because he helped keep the team in it with his shots.  Kirk spread the ball around like he was supposed to.  Lu was solid, he had some real nice drives when we needed it.

Now if we can just find Ben's shooting eye, I think everything will be ok.

The crowd was unbelievable...breaking into several chats of "De-troit sucks!" was music to everyone's ears.

fun game to watch
Oh that settling feeling...I anticipated them losing. But, they kept it together. The pistons had their team together last night. It was very clear that wanted this game. Detroit is out to prove they're the best in the east.

Sheed was amazing, and he kept the Piston's offense together with Prince's bad night and Hamilton and Billups (relatively) quiet night. TT and Joe played sheed very well through the game, especially at the end. sheed had his looks, but TT and Joe were consistent.

The bulls' performance is a sign of hope, but I'm still a disappointed (yet 100% faithful) bulls fan. I was very impressed with Skiles' decision to keep Wallace out of the 4th quarter (I think he's 3 games too late with that strategy.), and I'm impressed with the team squad of Joe, TT, Deng, Ben, and Hinrich. Luol's performance has been sub-par (based upon expectations), but he's been working his post game (patience...time...), and Joe and TT has been more offensively minded.

In the past, when the bulls guards score poorly, the bulls lose. Last night Gordon and Hiccup shot the ball poorly; We won. We know why

Oh, and Sheed has a potty mouth.

I think most underrate...
...or at least overlook because of their joy, that the Pistons played really tough last night. They weren't unbelievable, but I think they played a pretty darn good game.

That's part of what makes the win extra great
though, is that the Pistons were really into it and were playing well overall.  It wasn't like the Bulls finally got a win over another winless team, or the Pistons played awful and that gave the Bulls a shot.  The Pistons played solid and were right in it at the end, but the Bulls still didn't fold and played just enough better. And all that while still having room to play even better themselves.

Great atmosphere
i wasn't there but watching it live on TNT I could feel the atmosphere. It was a playoff atmosphere, and the Pistons gave it their all but the Bulls were Bullish. I love our young Bigs. The rebounding stats are significant. Our bench was superb. The Pistons had that look on their faces as if they were wondering about the difference in this Bulls team. I get the feeling that this team. as it's been put together, will be a force this season. Lots of energy. I hope Pax doesn't break it up by trading any of the young players. I know Jerry Buss and the Lakers were paying rapt attention to what traspired last night.

About that block
Where TT embarassed Rip Hamilton, I have not yet had a chance to catch the highlights (and forgot to set the DVR). Can someone tell me exactly what happened? I mean, what made it such a spectacular block?

Tyrus almost leaped over him cleanly
Rip had a real short shot, not quite a layup.  Tyrus was quick enough to leap and block it.  Rip went between Tyrus's legs and got an earful of T's manhood.  They both fell down, but Tyrus would have landed it on his feet.  Rip reached back and grabbed Tyrus's ankle to trip him.  If the ref hadn't been standing right there on the baseline, Rip probably would have gotten away with it.

It wasn't just the block. It was how it changed
the momentum. Ben Wallace foolishly tried to dribble the ball off of his rebound and (surprise) got it stolen. The Bulls were in serious danger of letting Detroit get the lead when....look up in the sky, it's a bird, it's a plane...it's Tyrus Thomas swatting that shit and taking down the evil Plastic-Face in one huge play.

by philosoball on Nov 9, 2007 12:09 PM CST up reply actions

That was one of those
Completely awesome moments where Tyrus Thomas looks like the next coming.  He's definately gotten stronger.

That was one of the most ridiculously awesome blocks ever (right up there with Tayshawn's block of Reggie in my book--although that's likely because this helped my Bulls, Tayshawn's block paved the way for the Pistons title opportunity).

I was actually more impressed with Tyrus's ridiculously quick move and crazy reverse layup over a very very very solid defender in Rasheed Wallace (who was on him like a fox).  THat was the most sensational play, even if the Rip block was a bit later in the game.  Both make me very happy with T2 on our team.

Tyrus is still one of those guys who when he gets the ball on offense (That's not a put back at least) where I'm like clenching my teeth a bit and nervous, but acrobatic plays like the one I mentioned above will go a long way to rectifying that.  I was shocked that Tyrus had that in him, and it was also cool seeing just how fast he is (since you normally just see the athleticism and quick hands, I've never seen him move that quickly while dribbling the ball).

by majoyenrac on Nov 9, 2007 12:49 PM CST up reply actions

Tyrus really went after RWallce. He even started
jab stepping about 12' from the basket and when Wallace didn't step up to block the shot, Tyrus just rose up and took the shot. He missed, but that is an unstoppable play and if Tyrus can master it we will finally have a player who commands a double-team.

by philosoball on Nov 9, 2007 12:55 PM CST reply actions

He made one early from a step inside 3-pt.
Which did open up his moves ever-so-slightly---which was just enough.

Right, but Wallace was still daring him to take
jumpers later in the game. Tyrus has also obviously worked on his post moves. The "crab dribble" and then goes up with the left hand hook shot from 5' away. Tyrus is starting to look like a faster and stronger version of Deng, with an array of scoring moves.

He was a
BEAST last night!!  My favorite move was maybe somewhere in the middle of the 3rd?  If I remember correctly he recieved the pass on the baseline from Deng??? (not sure) Took a dribble and exploded for a dunk in traffic.  NO ONE wanted a piece of him!!!
He is progressing like the 4th pick should

Start reviewing the game film
So we can repeat these results.  What else can I say?  Tyrus for Emperor? It would be a dynasty of much tea-bagging, swatting shots and unbridled enthusiasm.  I think we're onto something with this team, fellow fans.

Go Bulls!  Bring the Raptors on!

Bulls or Raptors?
There's a simple way to determine which team will win tonight.

Based on the season so far, are the Bulls a 2-4 team or a 1-5 team. Gotta go with 1-5.

Based on the season so far, are the Raptors a 3-4 team or 4-3 team. 4-3, they're better than last year.

What's the difference between a steakhouse and the United Center? One serves people steak, the other is filled with a bunch of dead Bulls.

WOW
since you've already made your mind up they are going to lose you don't even need to watch the game. Why even be a fan?

You are a genius!
Watch you crunch those numbers. I guess no one needs to watch the game now.  Actually, I guess the Bulls shouldn't have beat Detroit then either, right?  Because they didn't have a loss yet and we didn't have a win yet.  I wonder if someone should go tell them they should have lost. Walk over to TT and show him your math skills.
